Editing/Post Processing How would you recreate this film texture and color grading?

I’m trying to achieve this look in my own photos. Beyond the visible film grain, there seems to be a subtle paper-like texture, almost as if the image were printed on matte paper and then scanned but it's full digital.

How would you recreate this effect in Lightroom or Photoshop? Any tips on textures, overlays, or film emulation plugins would be appreciated!

Technical Help/Camera Settings Dead pixels on sensor?

Thumbnail

Hello!

As the title says I believe that I have some dead pixels on my sensor? Pictured with a few different backgrounds. I didn't notice through all of my concert shooting the other weekend, but took some engagement photos a few days ago and the color scheme definitely helped it pop! I'm just looking for validation about what I think is wrong.

I recently returned from being abroad and this camera sat in a camera bag, untouched, for about 8/9 months. I have yet to pull out my harddrive to see if this is showing on images before I moved.. I'm hoping to get a Canon r6 soon, but lack the money to do so. Post processing these spots isn't a big deal, as annoying as it is. I just want to know if this something that will get worse? What a timeline on that looks like??

Info:

- Canon 5D mark iv, been shooting on her since 2018

- Not the lens! Shows up across multiple shoots, multiple lenses

The camera itself looks to be in rough shape. Are the lenses worth the price even if the camera is no good?

This is obviously not a professional photo, but I have shown up to events and when I start lining people up all the girls get into this horrible pose. Where did this come from? It’s not flattering.

Edit: looks like nobody reads the body of these posts. 👀

Camera Buying Advice What is the best “pocket” camera?

I sold my Fujifilm X100f three years ago to buy a Sony Alpha A7 III… big mistake! The Sony was just too bulky and I never used it. I’ve recently sold the Sony and looking for something pocket sized again. Any recommendations gratefully received!

(1) UK based Budget around £1,200

(2) recently sold a Sony Alpha A7 III as it was too big and bulky.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? - want to take on dog walks and while travelling , also to capture the kids etc

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? - only for photography

Technical Help/Camera Settings does anyone have a clue why this artifacting is happening?

High exposure areas are being weird, and have magenta edges around where there is overexposure. I have tried changing almost every setting independently, and messed around with some after effects but the pink glow will not go. Not sure what the issue might be, and might just be an old sensor, but I wanted to ask if anyone has any clue what this might be. it's a sony a100 if that helps.

Editing/Post Processing [Update] Got the ZV-1 and having fun with it. Being new, should I just focus shooting in raw with settings and no editing?

original post

Did my first "session" today. I did some editing but had no idea what I was doing. Also, I messed with aperture but had a hard time with the light. Is that just what happens when it is super sunny out or is there a way to deal with that?

the first three photos are edited, the others are raw.

Camera Buying Advice Is Fujifilm a good option for someone wanting to avoid post-editing?

• Upvotes

I am looking to invest around $700-1k on a used camera, I have had my Canon EOS for ages and it’s just too clunky and I am looking to re-vamp my creativity and focus on street photography. I have been doing research and initially wanted a Nikon Zfc - i love the old school look and small size.

I almost just went for it but then looked more into it and am now considering a Fujifilm-- I will be totally honest I have ZERO interest in editing my photos- I might every now and then if I have time but I just generally know I won’t, am I right in assuming a Fujifilm with the whole “recipe” thing will cut down on my need for post-editing? I also still have my Canon so if I want to invest in lenses for other projects in the future I have that option.

In terms of technicality and experience I am a noob with photography, I don't even know if I am right in my assumptions with Fujifilm vs Nikon, any advice would be helpful!

1) less than $1000 used in USA

(2) currently have a Canon rebel T7, too big

(3) I want to start doing street photography, nature is my usual subject

(4) only for photography no video

Compositon/Posing Randomly ended up the background photographer for a wedding. Any tips/advice?

• Upvotes

So friends ended up buying a relatively nice Canon digital camera without a photographer lined up for their wedding. I volunteered as a backup for the informal wedding if they can't find a photographer and need any tips you can offer to make sure I don't miss key shots. Any suggestions on must hit photos of I get called on? Also any tips in general are welcome! I mostly use a Canon AE1 so this is unfamiliar territory to me.

Discussion/General Client creating another photoshoot with AI. Advice?

• Upvotes

(TLDR @ the end)

I’ve had several clients edit my photos with or without AI. My contract specifically states that they cannot edit, including the use of AI. For the most part, I let it go, I got paid and as long as I’m not tagged in it because I don’t want people thinking I made those shitty edits.

However, this specific situation bothered me. I traded services with a lady that I’ve already done several paid sessions for. She’s been wanting branding photos for her nail business, but she also wanted birthday photos. I agreed to swap services for a birthday session, she’s doing about $60 worth of nails for me. And I delivered about $300 worth of photos to her from a birthday session I did for her. It wasn’t the most fair trade value-wise, but I was fine with that because they’re amazing for my portfolio and I had a blast. I created a contract for this stating the service trade, and it had all my typical clauses including not using AI or altering the photos, and also no commercial use for business or ads.

Today, I opened Instagram to find that she used a photo from the birthday session, and had AI create a business photo from it with her and some nail supplies. She reintroduced herself, announced her business anniversary, and was advertising services. Her leg is totally distorted, her face and hair look off, it’s a mess. And now I miss out on the branding session, this photo looks terrible, and she’s using it for her business which was also not allowed. Her post is also doing very well as far as engagement. This could have been great for my business, and now I’m hoping she doesn’t tell anyone that I created that.

I have to sit through a 1.5 hour nail appointment with her next week. I’m just so on the fence about saying anything because she was such a great client in the past, but this really bugged me. I’m curious what you’d do, and if this has happened to anyone else.

I feel like people will always do whatever they want. But I know what I can do in the future to make a better effort to avoid this and make things more clear. I feel like no one reads the damn contracts.

TLDR (also long, sorry)
I traded a birthday session worth roughly $300 in photos for about $60 in nail services with a repeat client. She’d previously expressed interest in booking branding photos for her nail business. Today, I discovered she used AI to turn one of the birthday portraits into a business ad, complete w nail supplies and some awful distorted features. The contract specifically says both AI alterations and commercial use aren’t allowed.
Now she’s using this poorly edited image to promote her business, potentially eliminating the branding session she wanted, and I’m worried people will think I created it. The post is getting great engagement, too, which makes it even more frustrating.
I have a 1.5-hour nail appointment with her next week, and I’m torn between addressing it and preserving a good client relationship. Has anyone dealt with this? Would you say something or let it go? I’m realizing that even with contracts, people seem to do whatever the fuck they want.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Mac Users - which drive format do you use?

• Upvotes

Just purchased a external SSD. I am going to format drive but I am not 100% sure which to use.
APFS - Apple File System. This would be my first choice. It was designed for flash storage etc etc.
Then i read something about using with other devices like cameras and transferring photo files.

So now I am thinking of sticking with exFAT.

Macbook Air M1
Laminar for processing
Nikon digital files. NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) and NRW (RAW format)
Export to jpeg Sometimes TIFF

I want to go with APFS unless someone has direct experience in problems.

Artifical Lighting & Studio How to Light for A Cosplay Contest Convention Photo Opportunity?

So I'm volunteering with this group that's running a convention this year. They plan on doing a Cosplay Contest this year; their first time really doing something such as this.

The space we have is a theater room with a stage. My suggestion was that we would have all the participants enter from pre-stage, stand in front of a backdrop, get a couple photos taken of their outfit, before moving on to wait to be called out onto stage proper. This way we get good marketing photos with our branding and all that, and all the contestants are guaranteed at least one good photo from the competition.

The backstage environment isn't truly ideal; the lighting back there isn't bad for the naked eye, but not great for a camera either. And due to the way it's laid out, it's not that deep either, being longer than it is deep.

I figure I'd want a couple lights with softboxes, ideally two at about 45* from the backdrop yeah? I've never done studio lighting before, always just done outside photos, mainly sports. Would I want any top down lighting? How far away from the backdrop do think roughly should have people be? How far should the lights be?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT:
We may or may not have access to some lights already that the venue has; but I'm going to work under the "assume they're not available and we have to obtain our own". Ideally budget wise would be $500 or less.

Film & Camera Theory Can this be color corrected?

Post image
79 Upvotes

I am extremely amateur at photography, but my best friend insisted I be part of her day and photograph her wedding on 35mm and most of them turned out pretty well, I’m pretty proud. However, I experimented with a purple lomochrome and all of those shots ended up having this yellowish green overlay. If this is fixable I would really appreciate learning how to color correct and also maybe get some tips on how to avoid this happening in the future. If this is not the correct subreddit could someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you!

Camera Buying Advice a good everyday camera?

I'm planning to get a second camera. I have a Canon R7 and 24105 f4. This is a great camera even today, but it's chunky. And a great camera is still a very expensive brick if I don't have the desire to take it out. I'm in college, and I think the place where I go has a lot of great things to photograph. I'm looking for a relatively cheap APS-C camera that I can just pocket/take along. I have my eyes on smth like a ZV-E10 or Z30. Any suggestions?

Budget: ¥2500-3300 (350-500usd)

Country: china

Condition: used
Type of Camera: Mirrorless

Intended use: Photography

If photography, what style: all types
What features do you absolutely need: mechanical shutter, minor wether sealing

What features would be nice to have: good grip and control

Portability: pocketable/small bag
Cameras you're considering: Z30 vs ZVE10

Cameras you already have: R7+24105f4 good: great camera bad: too chunky

For additional information: if im getting the ZV-E10, I won't be using the kit lens; I'll be using a Viltrox prime lens, and if Z30, I'll be using the kit lens. (I'm buying in China, so there are a lot of third-party prime lens options)

Editing/Post Processing Cannon GX7 for engagement photos?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m recently engaged and trying to see if I can use a cannon GX7 for engagement photos similar to the ones above. I was planning on having my best friend take them kinda casually since we really just need a few photos for save the dates and I’m planning on saving for a real photographer at the actual wedding.

Any advice is appreciated! Is there any attachments/editing/settings you would recommend for this? Or just recommendations in general for trying this?

Discussion/General Bringing A Body And Lens To An NFL Game?

As the title states...

Going to an NFL game in a few weeks and would appreciate other's experiences bringing a more professional-looking camera and lens. I currently plan to bring a 70-300mm as it's length is within the Team's, Stadium's, and NFL's policies, and my seats are rather close to the sideline. I believe my main point of issue will come down to which security guard I end up getting on the day.

Would also love to see some sample photos people have taken, if they're able to share. I don't expect to take any kind of magazine-worthy photos, just enjoy using my gear for what it was meant.

Thank You in advance and apologies if this kind of post is not allowed.

Camera Buying Advice Newbie gear tips?

So I’m looking into starting some photography as a hobby (cause good pictures just tickle my brain) and I was wondering what would be good, budget gear to get started?

The camera I’m looking at mostly is the Canon T7, but I was wondering what other options might be good? I know that $500 is pretty budget-friendly in the world of cameras, but I was curious if there were cameras that are serviceable enough that are in the market of $200-$300 (like maybe in the used market).

I’m also completely uneducated concerning lenses, so some recommendations for lenses that can do portraits of people and lenses that can do toy photography (LEGO and 6in figures) would be very appreciated!

Technical Help/Camera Settings How to fix Apple auto-enhancing raw camera photos when previewing!?

Can someone please help me with this? It’s been driving me crazy having to troubleshoot how to get the original RAW colors back before I even start editing.

I shoot on a Sony camera, and I’ve been noticing this recurring issue for around the last year and a half.

When I connect my SD card to my MacBook and preview the RAW files, the images initially look like they did on the camera, but then within a couple of seconds the colors shift into a much more oversaturated/sharpened version. I don’t use True Tone in my Apple settings.

For a while, my workaround was to open the original Sony RAW files in Sony Imaging Edge first and then export them, which seemed to preserve the colors to how they originally looked.

Now I’ve reopened an older shoot and I’m running into the same problem, plus a new one. I think I may have imported/exported the RAWs through Lightroom for that shoot instead of importing the RAW files directly from the SD card folder into Sony Imaging Edge. Because even when I open those files in Sony Imaging Edge now, they no longer look like the original colors I remember.

What makes this even more confusing is that I can still see the image initially display with the colors I remember before it shifts a couple of seconds later, so it seems like there is still an original-looking preview/rendering somewhere in the file.

In Photoshop/Camera Raw, profiles like Adobe Portrait or Adobe Landscape look somewhat close, but I don’t want to have to recreate the baseline color every single time before I’ve even started creatively editing.

I also experimented by AirDropping an old RAW file from this 2-year-old shoot that had been on my iPhone for years back to my MacBook, and vice versa. It started affecting and doing the same color-shifting behavior there too, and now I’m even seeing similar behavior when viewing RAWs on my older iPhone. This is why I’m wondering whether there is some Apple/macOS/iOS display or RAW-rendering setting involved.

Here’s another Reddit post with a video showing behavior very similar to what happens with my images:
https://www.reddit.com/r/photography/s/YpkZ60xMV8

Could this be:
•macOS/iOS changing how it renders RAW files after the initial preview loads?
•a color-management/profile/display setting issue?
•something Adobe/Lightroom is doing to the RAW preview or metadata?
•something related to converting, copying, or exporting RAW files?
•or normal RAW rendering behavior that has somehow changed recently?

Most importantly, is there a way to consistently see the same Sony/camera rendering when I open my RAWs and prevent this from happening going forward?

Any help would be really appreciated because I feel like I’m fighting the files before I can even start editing.

Editing/Post Processing How to fix an under-exposed photo in post?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I recently did a spooky-themed photoshoot outdoors where I planned on using off-flash lighting. However, there was a mishap with my equipment and I ended up using ambient lighting. The model I was working with had another photoshoot right after and I did not want to waste her time trying to fix the equipment. I am also still fairly new to using off-flash lighting with my photos and before anyone replies with this, I am aware that properly exposing photos is the right thing.

Majority of the photos (as the example shows) were taken under shadowy areas and I am having difficulty with trying to adjust it in post.

Does anyone have any tips on what particular settings to use for tis situation? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.
