Article Dev Workshop: Ammo Efficiency Changes & Riven Disposition Retirement

1.3k Upvotes

Greetings Tenno!

Our recent introduction of Ammo Efficiency traits to Riven mods via Riven Splicers has made this stat more accessible to players, and led to much discussion internally on how the availability of infinite ammo builds affects Warframe’s game balance. We mentioned briefly in Devshort #119 that we were looking at Ammo Efficiency specifically, and we’re here to cash the checks we wrote.

The conversation has led us with two key decisions, which you will see reflected in a hotfix later this week:

  • Capping Ammo Efficiency
  • Retiring the Riven Disposition System

There’s a lot to go over on both of these topics, so we’ll dive right in!

Arsenal Retuning Inbox
With the coming changes to Ammo Efficiency and Riven Dispositions, all players who log in after Thursday’s hotfix will receive the following (until December 31st 2026 at 11:59pm ET):

  • 1 Built Forma + 100,000 Kuva

Players who have installed a Riven Splicer in a Riven Mod prior to Thursday’s hotfix will also receive the following in a separate inbox as a thank you for being an early adopter:

  • 1 Riven Splicer + 100,000 Kuva

Ammo Efficiency Changes

Warframe is about the power fantasy, and infinite ammo is the epitome of that. Shooting endlessly into hordes of enemies can feel incredible, and we want players to be able to experience that — sometimes. The recent introduction of Riven Splicers has changed that “sometimes” for infinite ammo into a much more guaranteed thing, which has brought around this entire conversation.

Our main concern with 100% Ammo Efficiency (a.k.a. infinite ammo) builds is the possibility for automated gameplay. We want infinite ammo to be a limited buff you experience occasionally in-mission, not a guaranteed part of your build.

With that in mind, a hotfix is shipping later this week with the following changes:

  • Ammo Efficiency is capped at 75%.
    • For those unfamiliar with the Ammo Efficiency mechanic, this means only 1 in 4 shots will consume ammo.
    • This applies to Ammo Efficiency increases from multiple sources — they will only increase the stat up to this cap.
  • Sources that intentionally gave 100% Ammo Efficiency (ex: Void Relic cracking buffs) have now been rephrased to indicate they give Infinite Ammo.
  • There are other Mods, Arcanes, and Incarnon Evolutions that come with their own edge-cases, which we’ll explain in detail below.

Retiring the Riven Disposition System

Iceblade of Narin has brought with it a number of shake-ups to the Riven ecosystem - and we’re not done yet! Join us as we explain why and how we are retiring the Riven Disposition system.

Before going into details, a brief history on key points to help illuminate how we got here!

Both Riven Dispositions numbers, and the system itself, have evolved to match the changing needs of our playerbase and game. However, these changes have always been at odds with a fundamental fact: Warframe players like big numbers.

Reducing values and taking away power was never popular, and starting new weapons low made the system less exciting to engage with. Offering higher Dispositions on unpopular weapons was not enough to level the playing field, and instead of encouraging engagement in lesser weapons, we saw that investment was still focused on making powerful weapons more powerful. Incarnons were a more successful attempt at breathing life into older outdated weapons, and the overlapping of these systems only multiplied their power further.

Therefore, we believe (like many of you, based on feedback) that the system has run its course, and simplification would help reduce complexity. Therefore!

The Plan Going Forward:
Rivens no longer have varying Dispositions, meaning all Rivens share the same range for stat values (the equivalent to a Disposition of 1.2).

Rivens have pre-set ranges for each stat roll generated, and Disposition is applied as a multiplier to each stat. In practical terms, this means ALL Rivens will be slightly above the current average in terms of power.

Since this has a significant impact on Rivens**, we are disabling the ability to trade Rivens until this change goes out in a hotfix on Thursday.** We want players to be able to make informed trading decisions, and there is no way to guarantee all players will know about the coming changes to their Riven within this ~48 hour window. Attempting to trade Rivens during this window will result in a "Failed to make offer" message until we are able to re-establish trading.

This will shake things up in a few ways!

  • Some Rivens for popular weapons will be increased significantly.
    • Examples:
      • Nataruk: 0.65->1.2
      • Grimoire: 0.6->1.2
  • Some Rivens for “average” weapons will be increased slightly.
    • Examples:
      • Gotva Prime: 0.85->1.2
      • Staticor: 0.9->1.2
  • Some Rivens for popular weapons will be reduced slightly.
    • This only really applies to certain standout Incarnons.
    • Examples:
      • Burston Prime: 1.35->1.2
      • Dual Ichor: 1.25->1.2
  • Some Rivens for unpopular weapons will be reduced slightly.
    • This is not ideal, but accessible low-powered weapons usually exist as a stepping stone for new players on their journey through the Mastery system. And as discussed above, there is no telling when a low MR weapon will get the glow-up of a lifetime through new upgrades and variants!
    • Examples:
      • Harpak: 1.55->1.2
      • Heat Sword: 1.45->1.2

What is the desired outcome of this change?

  • Brand new weapons will have powerful Rivens available on day one
  • All Rivens are guaranteed to offer a noticeable boost, including those for your favorite powerful weapons
  • No more constant adjustments — your Rivens will not change unless you change them through rerolling
  • All weapons get equal treatment, giving us more control when balancing old and new weapons
  • Simplified system by removing Disposition as a factor when comparing and evaluating Rivens

Why now?

  • With the addition of various Riven rerolling quality improvements, the price of many Rivens has been “reset” somewhat recently. The sooner we make this change, the less of an impact it will hopefully have on the Riven ecosystem.

Suggestion Why not? Let's destroy the Riven Market.

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

Selecting Yes guarantees that you receive a riven mod for your currently equipped weapon.

Selecting No grants you a riven mod for a random weapon, excluding the one you currently have equipped.

And the riven market collapses.

Edit
Just in case anyone is wondering, this is a concept image. It hasn't actually been applied in the game.

Suggestion DE, if you add another zero to all Kuva rewards, its still would be a okay reward.

Your current kuva economy really sucks. 100,000 really isn't as much as you think it is.

I want DE employee to actually engage with the kuva rolling and see for themselves. It's rough.

Discussion If we're going to be naming the hound it needs substance not just a pun.

387 Upvotes

So Brysko is named after Briscoe from Law and Order so why not try and name his hound after a famous dog detective or something.

Like Gruff after McGruff for example. Idk i just hate that everyone is trying for puns instead of an actual name.

Edit: Once again im partial to Klew pronounced as clue, for a name. Short, sweet, thematic.

Discussion It's been more than a year since Caliban's prime release and still: No floating animations for Tau update.

121 Upvotes

During devshort 120, Rebecca was asked if we were getting Caliban or Caliban prime's floating animations when he is moving for the Tau Update, Rebecca said with a dry and unelaborative: No.

I just don't get why in 12+ months of release they haven't even given a reasoning as to why this isn't a timely manner. I don't want to try to sound smart or like I know more than the developers, but how hard can it be to design, animate and code floating animations when he moves? Hell it might be a stretch but I believe someone with Caliban's rig in blender can do this under 5 hours if they have enough knowledge and experience.

Discussion Kuva survival should match or exceed meta arbitration kuva amounts.

96 Upvotes

I do believe it should match or even exceed meta arbi tbh. It's really hard to get into. You need specific builds that are mostly useless outside of it to get your foot in the door.

Vauban for example usually helminth brightbonnet (nokko subsume) over his 4th. You'll never use this build outside of arbitration. I needed a whole new wisp because my wisp was a persistence build with blue shards just so I can max strength buff which is required for meta arbi, same for jade and nidus for pre-buffing strats. Also cyte sobek ehem but his build is largely unchanged for regular play.

There is also host and client shenanigans and what not so it's really really not very average player friendly in any shape or form. That being said, this post is not to slander the meta players or those who enjoy it. I personally think they are awesome and very helpful and kind players who loves to go out of their way to help. I just think this is a bit too much for an average player.

Kuva survival also is way way more player involved than sitting afk to be the cyte players baby sitter for an hour. Especially now since eximus exists, you can't just limbo or frost bubble and semi afk anymore. Not to mention the kuva guardian requires some operator play even.

Rivens are now standardized, it finally is a custom mod basically now with disposition removed and it's even more expensive to roll with stat locking/splicing so I do think it's time to open the gates for your average player instead of gatekeeping in meta arbitration strats.

Suggestion remove the need to go into drifter to access la cathedrale

276 Upvotes

to access marie or roathe you have to go into drifter for some stupid lore reason. there is a prompt to switch to drifter but it doesnt change you back into operator once you leave so you have to go back into the arsenal to switch back to the operator every time. its really inconvenient for anyone who prefers to play as operator. either make it remember you entered as operator so you dont have to manually switch back or just remove the need to go drifter for one minor room.

Other Farming Platinum for Newbies

342 Upvotes

Okay so, there's this out of game item called USD and its probably one of the worst grinds you can do. Basically, you go out and find this type of Syndicate known as a Corporation and find one which drops the "Employed" Honoria (very rare). Once you've done that, you have to run the daily Disruption missions that Syndicate gives you for 8 hours a day for 5 out of the 7 days in a week. Now, it takes a month of running these Disruption Missions but the upside is you get a guaranteed drop of some USD at the end of the month. Once you do that, you can go to the in-game store and directly trade USD for Platinum at a varying rate. Wait for a platinum discount coupon or platinum bonus coupon depending on your platform and exchange.

Discussion I don't like AFK farmers, but as things are, the AFK detection system punishes the base mechanics of Mesa's ult.

161 Upvotes

Mesa, as a warframe, has an ability that requires you to not move while you are channeling it.
The AFK system removes your rewards if you stand still for too long.
I'm well aware of the augment, but as it stands the base kit of the warframe requires you to stand still to use the most important ability.

I don't know what I'm advocating for here, I just know that as it stands there is a warframe whose gimmick requires standing still, and a system that punishes you for standing still. One of them probably needs to change. I'm all for lumping Mesa's Waltz into the base ability.

If there are other warframes that encourage/require standing still, please educate me. I don't know of any, and right now I think updating Mesa in this way would be the best solution.

EDIT: Multiple comments have informed me that weapon kills also reset the timer. If this is true (unsure how to confirm) then it absolutely means what I'm pointing out does not affect Mesa. Thank you for the discussion and education, folks!

Discussion If DE’s goal is stopping disruptive playstyles, why does half the current sandbox explicitly design for them?

884 Upvotes

Whether it’s Acid Shells, ammo efficiency, or Riven dispositions, where exactly is the goalpost right now? At what point do we ever get to see a definitive: "We did it! It’s fixed and working as intended"?

Because if the actual design goal is making sure that no single playstyle is hyper-disruptive to other players' ability to participate in and enjoy the game, then surely we should expect catastrophic reworks and nerfs to builds like:

  • Dual augment Sevagoth spam
  • Chain reaction Grendel
  • Chain reaction Oraxia
  • Chain reaction Lavos
  • Other Chain reaction Cyte-09 Builds
  • Max range Mirage
  • Thermal Sunder Gauss
  • Curse Kullervo

These setups can walk into a room, press two or three buttons in rapid succession, and instantly delete every enemy in line of sight. It creates the exact same issue. squadmates simply don't get to interact with enemies. Yet many of these playstyles have existed for years on frames that DE actively designs and ships new augments specifically to enable. If that's the case, then preventing "disruption" clearly can't be the design goal. also limbo simply exists as a threat to be played against your squadmates.

So, is it anti AFK? We know DE hates passive play with a burning passion. it gets brought up in dev content almost every other time adjustments discussed. But if that's the primary priority, are the following going to be overhauled as well?

  • Melee Influence auto spreaders (far too many to list)
  • Lavos Dual Ichor timeout setups
  • Citrine gas chamber builds
  • Citrine Gem +1 spam
  • Virtually anything with Vaubans Vortex
  • Auto melee input repeating (abusing mission progress menu for auto inputs)
  • Banshee bright bonnet build
  • Xaku auto target snapshot gating
  • Blaze Artillery Protea loops
  • On call Crew Revenant afk
  • Health tank Inaros with Specter

These builds might require an input once every 60 seconds to refresh a buff, but after finding a safe corner, player engagement drops to near zero. You can just go watch Coffeezilla on a second monitor while tapping a single key every now and then. These interactions have been part of the meta for years with zero intervention, which suggests they're deemed acceptable. So the anti AFK goalpost doesn't quite hold up either. (despite the fact you can literally get banned for playing how you want to without cheating...)

Maybe it's an effort to curb power creep, keep the sandbox challenging, and make older weapons viable outside of simple mastery rank fodder? Balance the game a bit?

oh.... well nevermind.

And what exactly does Rebb mean by "bringing things in line"? What line are we even looking at? At this point, the game might as well just funnel everyone straight into Lich and Incarnon weapons, because the original philosophy behind the Riven system feels completely abandoned. Rivens were explicitly DESIGNED to give older, underperforming weapons a fighting chance as the game's power creep moved forward.

Instead, the disposition updates are completely inverted. The less popular, underused guns are somehow receiving disposition nerfs, while the most heavily used, meta-dominant weapons are inexplicably getting even stronger.

When do we stop treating these updates as calculated balance passes rather than knee-jerk over-reactions to priority event grinds? The community frequently makes a mountain out of a molehill, and DE responds by taking a sledgehammer the the mechanics people enjoy, leaving everyone wondering what the baseline rules are actually supposed to be.
