Article Dev Workshop: Ammo Efficiency Changes & Riven Disposition Retirement

Greetings Tenno!

Our recent introduction of Ammo Efficiency traits to Riven mods via Riven Splicers has made this stat more accessible to players, and led to much discussion internally on how the availability of infinite ammo builds affects Warframe’s game balance. We mentioned briefly in Devshort #119 that we were looking at Ammo Efficiency specifically, and we’re here to cash the checks we wrote.

The conversation has led us with two key decisions, which you will see reflected in a hotfix later this week:

  • Capping Ammo Efficiency
  • Retiring the Riven Disposition System

There’s a lot to go over on both of these topics, so we’ll dive right in!

Arsenal Retuning Inbox
With the coming changes to Ammo Efficiency and Riven Dispositions, all players who log in after Thursday’s hotfix will receive the following (until December 31st 2026 at 11:59pm ET):

  • 1 Built Forma + 100,000 Kuva

Players who have installed a Riven Splicer in a Riven Mod prior to Thursday’s hotfix will also receive the following in a separate inbox as a thank you for being an early adopter:

  • 1 Riven Splicer + 100,000 Kuva

Ammo Efficiency Changes

Warframe is about the power fantasy, and infinite ammo is the epitome of that. Shooting endlessly into hordes of enemies can feel incredible, and we want players to be able to experience that — sometimes. The recent introduction of Riven Splicers has changed that “sometimes” for infinite ammo into a much more guaranteed thing, which has brought around this entire conversation.

Our main concern with 100% Ammo Efficiency (a.k.a. infinite ammo) builds is the possibility for automated gameplay. We want infinite ammo to be a limited buff you experience occasionally in-mission, not a guaranteed part of your build.

With that in mind, a hotfix is shipping later this week with the following changes:

  • Ammo Efficiency is capped at 75%.
    • For those unfamiliar with the Ammo Efficiency mechanic, this means only 1 in 4 shots will consume ammo.
    • This applies to Ammo Efficiency increases from multiple sources — they will only increase the stat up to this cap.
  • Sources that intentionally gave 100% Ammo Efficiency (ex: Void Relic cracking buffs) have now been rephrased to indicate they give Infinite Ammo.
  • There are other Mods, Arcanes, and Incarnon Evolutions that come with their own edge-cases, which we’ll explain in detail below.

Retiring the Riven Disposition System

Iceblade of Narin has brought with it a number of shake-ups to the Riven ecosystem - and we’re not done yet! Join us as we explain why and how we are retiring the Riven Disposition system.

Before going into details, a brief history on key points to help illuminate how we got here!

Both Riven Dispositions numbers, and the system itself, have evolved to match the changing needs of our playerbase and game. However, these changes have always been at odds with a fundamental fact: Warframe players like big numbers.

Reducing values and taking away power was never popular, and starting new weapons low made the system less exciting to engage with. Offering higher Dispositions on unpopular weapons was not enough to level the playing field, and instead of encouraging engagement in lesser weapons, we saw that investment was still focused on making powerful weapons more powerful. Incarnons were a more successful attempt at breathing life into older outdated weapons, and the overlapping of these systems only multiplied their power further.

Therefore, we believe (like many of you, based on feedback) that the system has run its course, and simplification would help reduce complexity. Therefore!

The Plan Going Forward:
Rivens no longer have varying Dispositions, meaning all Rivens share the same range for stat values (the equivalent to a Disposition of 1.2).

Rivens have pre-set ranges for each stat roll generated, and Disposition is applied as a multiplier to each stat. In practical terms, this means ALL Rivens will be slightly above the current average in terms of power.

Since this has a significant impact on Rivens**, we are disabling the ability to trade Rivens until this change goes out in a hotfix on Thursday.** We want players to be able to make informed trading decisions, and there is no way to guarantee all players will know about the coming changes to their Riven within this ~48 hour window. Attempting to trade Rivens during this window will result in a "Failed to make offer" message until we are able to re-establish trading.

This will shake things up in a few ways!

  • Some Rivens for popular weapons will be increased significantly.
    • Examples:
      • Nataruk: 0.65->1.2
      • Grimoire: 0.6->1.2
  • Some Rivens for “average” weapons will be increased slightly.
    • Examples:
      • Gotva Prime: 0.85->1.2
      • Staticor: 0.9->1.2
  • Some Rivens for popular weapons will be reduced slightly.
    • This only really applies to certain standout Incarnons.
    • Examples:
      • Burston Prime: 1.35->1.2
      • Dual Ichor: 1.25->1.2
  • Some Rivens for unpopular weapons will be reduced slightly.
    • This is not ideal, but accessible low-powered weapons usually exist as a stepping stone for new players on their journey through the Mastery system. And as discussed above, there is no telling when a low MR weapon will get the glow-up of a lifetime through new upgrades and variants!
    • Examples:
      • Harpak: 1.55->1.2
      • Heat Sword: 1.45->1.2

What is the desired outcome of this change?

  • Brand new weapons will have powerful Rivens available on day one
  • All Rivens are guaranteed to offer a noticeable boost, including those for your favorite powerful weapons
  • No more constant adjustments — your Rivens will not change unless you change them through rerolling
  • All weapons get equal treatment, giving us more control when balancing old and new weapons
  • Simplified system by removing Disposition as a factor when comparing and evaluating Rivens

Why now?

  • With the addition of various Riven rerolling quality improvements, the price of many Rivens has been “reset” somewhat recently. The sooner we make this change, the less of an impact it will hopefully have on the Riven ecosystem.

Well... at least pistoleer didnt recieve collateral damage. Feel like the viper nerf was uncalled for. Did people even use that thing?

the amps are crying in a corner since they used an arcane and a mod for efficiency

I was affraid they'd pull that, and they did. Now eternal logistics (or whatever it's called) gets to go cry behind the dumpster next to limbo

Yep! I was just trying a solo EDA run with operator only and logistics was a big part of what made it possible.

I've been using arcane precision on her and liking it, it triggers on weak point hit instead of kill, and if you're aiming and firing bursts between moving you regen ammo plenty fast enough, and you hit much harder

I never used the viper mod, but I have tried to keep twin wraith vipers relevant for it's entire existence. I was excited for the new riven buffs. Even before the update I had a perfect riven with +critical chance + critical damage - projectile speed for 100% critical chance total and something like 7.2x critical damage. Riven disposition 5 and it was fun for only a few seconds. Couldn't even take advantage of arcane pistoleer reliably. I would've given it infinite ammo except secondaries don't have access to primary crux so I gave it multishot and weakpoint damage which was barely enough to kill high level enemies in one mag. Even then I still had to baby it with sonar and ammo strip.

It’s my favorite secondary (highest usage stat for ~8k hours) and it’s extremely heavy handed. The disposition actually made it SP viable.

The 50% threshold should still be achieved with another crit mod like point strike no? I haven’t done the math yet but 1.3 dispo to 1.2 doesn’t seem like it’s enough to drop below 50%

12

u/SnailWhoLovesMud 1d ago

the thing people are talking about is the +2 -1 cc rivens to save on 1 mod slot which is possible with 1.3 but not with 1.2

The riven disposition change is MASSIVE, but I really think its for the best

the disposition system only worked if dispos changed based on player usage to buff the less used weapons, and dispos had not changed in forever. Plenty of people wont be happy with this, but I think in the long run its the right move

u/Corat_McRed :Omni Forma: "Bröther, can I have söme möre? 1d ago

Yeah, I never understood why some guns just BARELY got changed over time, yet others just barely had the chance to grow into something you can actually use in builds.

18

u/thedavecan LR6 Punching Dudes Master Race 1d ago

Yeah, its going to suck for my Boar Prime Riven which is one of only a handful of actual nerfs. Still, I can understand that it's better for the game overall. It's not going to suddenly become a bad weapon.

147

u/Acrylic_ Baruuk My Beloved 1d ago

As someone with plenty of rivens for max disposition weapons(burston, dual tox, etc), I will gladly take this in return for the buffs it will give basically every other weapon in the game. I cant wait for my Coda Dual Torxica to have a 4/5 dispo!

38

u/Zymbobwye 1d ago

For real. I feel like we have gotten to the point where the strongest rivens were on some of the strongest weapons that don’t even need them thanks to incarnons, so it was nonsensical. This is a better compromise and now they don’t have to toy with numbers all the time and can just add stuff to the game.

Dispos got updated in June and September I'm pretty sure. They got updated throughout the entire year since since they started adjusting. Big problem is the change was glacial and seemingly inconsistent. Some weak weapons really got left behind in getting buffed. And of course no longer nerfing meant some weapons became inordinately strong if they got buffed by the devs.

68

u/SweatyTechnician1961 1d ago

The Vinquibus had a 0.6 disposition. 10 months for a weapon I've not seen a SINGLE person use, and it got a measly 0.10 increase. I'm actually mad it took so many years for them to remove this, because it was painfully obvious that they had no intention or motivation to actually deal with the system for a long ass time..

→ More replies (1)

43

u/Acrylic_ Baruuk My Beloved 1d ago

Its just hard when there are literally hundreds of weapons to not leave tons of them behind. There are some pretty obscure weapons that Id love to power up with a riven but never could until now

But you're right, dispositions did get updated earlier this year. My mistake

18

u/Based_Lord_Shaxx 1d ago

I don't blame you for not noticing. Riven changes were always minimal (understandably so) so they got buried under other big changes and content add-ons that were talked about. No one was going to make a reddit post that their Grakata riven was going from +122% heat to +128%

u/Creator409 did you read the patchnotes? 1d ago

...I think this will likely increase average riven prices

50

u/Bacca9999 1d ago

I agree, rn for the bad weapons they usually go for like 5-20 p but now since the bad weapon ones will be useable they will probs go up alot more but things like the burston, torid, dual tox, and ocucor will probs go down since there will be a lot more competition

25

u/Lyberatis Stop hitting yourself 1d ago

Why would that be the case? If a weapon is "bad" it's disposition is usually higher like the weapons they mention, meaning the change actually makes their rivens worse and therefore cheaper

8

u/WatLightyear 1d ago

There’s a ton of weapons (especially new ones) with lower dispositions after the “never lowering a disposition” change.

12

u/Bacca9999 1d ago

I do think thats true but there also alot of bad weapons with a low dispo as in the Galatine, Tonkkatt and Tenet Livia, all meh weapons that get buffed in which we might see an increase in prices, but as you say these is still a few weapons that do get nerfed even though they are still bad but that doesnt affect the prices bec they were allready selling for a low amount and its hard to go lower as in something like the Mios or Plasma Sword both of which sold for around 10-15 if I remember correctly and will probs go to like 5-10, but really its all speculation.

11

u/Beta_Decay_ 1d ago

No, you got it flipped. Bad weapons, that were nerfed with a disp of 1, now are more appealing. especially with spliced stats really helping out their weak points.

So no more infinite ammo AK/AX?

Damn, aside from that i like the changes.

106

u/The_Makers_Ruin Man I Love Farming 1d ago

Yeah I have to wonder if it'll be worth running crux on anymore. Probably, since there's still synergy with the aim mode, but Ill miss spraying and praying as I run around with it.

73

u/Vividtoaster 1d ago

300% status chance is still a lot, and with biotic rounds you can mod pure heat for what I imagine would be a good status build.

Alternatively since crux and the hipfire give 60%, you can ADS for the 400% crit chance instead.

34

u/MygungoesfuckinBRRT 1000% more Gun per Gun 1d ago

Think about it this way: with Crux, hip-fire will have 75% ammo efficiency, ADS will have 60%, so switching on the fly won't be as jarring. Plus, it also has the 300% Status Chance bonus still

I understand where they might want to push against infinite ammo, especially with all rivens being pushed to 1.2 disposition. The biggest disappointment for me is that amps are catching strays with this one. We've had access to infinite amp energy since The Old Peace, and it was down fantastic QoL. Now it's dead.

I can think of two niche cases for the 75% Ammo Efficiency cap that I feel like could be omitted, those being the AX-57 and our Operator;

  • AX-57 now loses its infinite Ammo Efficiency from Crux + its passive which was really non-threatening balance-wise and does more harm than good IMO
  • our Operator can no longer achieve max Ammo Efficiency from Eternal Logistics + Zid-An Haras, and more specifically kinda makes the latter a lot less helpful since Logistics is a 72% Efficiency buff, and therefore is already close to that max. I'd argue that Operator Amp max Efficiency was also a non-issue for balance, mostly just because of how little you'd see of it and how you actually need to keep the Logistics buff up instead of just standing around in one place

Apart from that though, 75% is totally fine for the majority of AoE weaponry, and adding an additional Infinite Ammo condition allows for more flexibility for this in the future. I just feel like certain weapons should be tweaked to allow for bypassing that cap or enabling Infinite Ammo, just because of how non-aggressive they were in comparison to the big offenders that enabled this change.

70

u/Muteogen 1d ago

Primary Crux AX-52 is literally my favorite build in the game please god DE let me keep this. it's not even overpowered it's just fun.

18

u/i__like__nuggets 1d ago

yeah this is really pissing me off honestly, im a baby tenno (~250 hours so far) that recently built ax and fell in love after discovering the synergy with crux, and now my favorite gun that ive invested the most in is getting a nerf because of an unrelated issue that DE brought about with improper balance testing

90

u/Bandit_Raider OG Caliban Enjoyer 1d ago

They should make an exception for the ax and operator, there is no reason to nerf them because of these riven shenanigans.

15

u/No_Guest7608 1d ago

75% cap is a bit severe if their main intention was to address afk-ability... there is no need for such a crazy low cap, they could have capped it at 90% and had the same effect. game balance wise, this splice was a lot less meta shifting than viral+ cor modding, gas splice, or wpdmg + ms modding easily are, even on its strongest users. and now its basically unusable. but its fine because they finally fixed riven dispositions and this good absolves their sins against AE :D

Eternal Logistics + Zid-An Haras

Or Vikla-Safor. I guess it's still worth running for the Fire Rate buff, but the +Ammo Efficiency effect also essentially does nothing on this one if you run Eternal Logistics.

You still need to Void Sling periodically to proc Eternal Logistics so that's kind of like reloading, especially with respect to interrupting AFK playstyles, I'd imagine. Operators/Tektolyst Artifacts don't need the nerf.

5

u/Hydrobolt 1d ago

I NEED my "guns in movies never have to reload" buff to remain as is.

25

u/Moridraug BRRRRRRRRT! 1d ago

Counterpoint: now you can just run Deadhead on AX and don't feel conflicted over not using crux. I'd say Dera is bigger victim due to ammo eff evo being better than channeling one, and Dera really liking Crux for both of it's effects. But overall I think the change is good.

28

u/Constant-Release6779 Valkyr LR6 1d ago

Dera got destroyed. Ammo efficiency AND disposition nerf. Truly the biggest loser of the nerfs, and it wasn't even a very stand out weapon to begin with, even with incarnon.

The Viper augment didn't need that nerf.

Having a low magazine, crazy fire rate weapon that can run theoretically infinitely provided you hit heads is a really cool concept. I think reducing the duration to make missing more punishing (maybe even no duration, just headshots don't consume ammo)bwould have been more appropriate (if there had to be any nerf at all)

I wish the ammo efficiency cap was something like 80% rather than 75%, but overall I'm not all too mad at the cap being a thing. The intentional cases are still being preserved; all this means is that edge cases will be gated a bit.

Not everybody will be happy with it, but I can at least respect the spirit behind the decision.

Riven dispo getting slashed entirely is a very welcome surprise. I might actually start investing more in rivens now for newer weapons.

11

u/Doomweapon6 1d ago edited 1d ago

My problem with the cap fundamentally is it's not because infinite ammo is OP in any way shape or form for 99% of guns (i.e. does the Chakkhurr fundamentally change just because infinite ammo? No, it basically doesn't). The cap is there simply because of performance issues being caused by people running around with Nightwatch Ogris and Acceltra with infinite ammo via rivens and Primary Crux. It's maybe 20 weapons tops doing this from what I know but we're hitting ammo efficiency across the board for every other gun because of a few "bad apple" weapons causing lag.

I understand "the why" on that level but the solution is a blanket solution that, at best, doesn't help other guns and at worst nukes some fun niche interactions (i.e. hipfired AX-52s with Primary Crux no longer have infinite ammo. Same applies with Dera Incarnon too). It reads off as a kneejerk reaction to a problem DE themselves caused by "not thinking/testing enough."

Edit: I should note that there is a pretty insane amount of "crossfire" going on with the cap to ammo efficiency too because it also means stuff like amps are getting hit with the cap when I argue amps suck just enough that an ammo efficiency cap on them feels like an insult. Yes, I know you can kill enemies with amps but nobody's first option to fighting virtually any enemy in high level Warframe is to use an amp on them.

RIP Amps ammo efficiency, feel like that could maybe be left alone specifically as you still need to void sling to trigger it. Also RIP AX-52 as well.

Would love a removal of the stat swinginess on rivens as well, it would save a bunch of space in terms of data and therefore the riven cap could be increased quite a bit. But overall removing dispositions is a great change.

I believe there is still place for infinite ammo through stacking ammo efficiency and that it should come in the form of an additive ammo efficiency stat that can go beyond the cap but only when actively triggered. Like, allowing Primary Crux to breach that cap would mean that fun infinite ammo builds like AX-52 or infinite Exergis have a chance to shine.

3

u/Doomweapon6 1d ago

Assuming they don't change it to fix the "bug" with it, then all it does is just send anyone who really like infinite ammo spam back to the Arcane Pistoleer spam strat over the Primary Crux spam. And realistically the ammo efficiency cap doesn't fundamentally fix the issues DE was running into that caused this nerf to begin with (infinite ammo Acceltra and Nightwatch Ogris spam causing performance issues) so I don't understand why this nerf even had to be put in place in general when 99% of the weapons across the game don't change too much from infinite ammo.

Then again, I'm not DE and DE has always had a track record of regarded nerfs (i.e. I thought back to Scarlet Spear with DE trying to remove Khora's ability to heal defense objects, getting BTFO'd by their own tooltips, and then having to soft rework all healing abilities because of it) so this was par for the course.

+1 to DE's track record of "doing without thinking or testing thoroughly enough first."

Kuva and Splicers needs to be given to players for each ammo efficiency riven they've rolled. A lot of players are not having their time respected with this "compensation".

200k kuva is less than 30 rolls with a locked stat, and many players will have used more than 1 splicer on splicing ammo efficiency.

DE made the mistake of introducing it in a state they weren't happy with, they should do right by the players who invested resourced into it.

That's where I'm at. The AX-52 is my main, general use primary. I can't believe an exception wasn't made for it, Biotic Rounds + Primary Crux was its whole deal that made it viable enough to be fun.

There is now officially no reason to use it instead of a Soma Prime. At least with the infinite ammo Rivens it was arguably far more convenient to acquire, like the little brother of it.

  1. Both capped at 75% efficiency, which Primary Crux alone will get you to within 15% of on the Soma Prime.
  2. Both have identical dispositions, so there's no buff from that.
  3. Soma Prime has the exclusive Hata-Satya augment, versus the Band-Aid fix that is Biotic Rounds.
  4. Soma Prime has a far more impressive maximum effective magazine size.
  5. Soma Prime has an incarnon.

The "they're going to put in a global efficiency cap and ruin the AX-52" doomer crowd was right. Like what's the balance plan now? Actually buff things that need buffs? Because we can't even get past Ember's recency bias on that front.

Why not just lower the amount of ammo efficiency from the new rivens instead of nerfing the whole stat for a problem that rivens caused? The only weapon that could really take advantage of it before rivens was the AX-52, specifically while hip firing. That could get to 100%, which wasn't broken at all. I want my funny meme build back :(

5

u/Doomweapon6 1d ago

There was a couple weapons other than AX-52 that could take advantage of those AE rivens (Boltor incarnon and Dera Incarnon are the main 2 I know of) but yeah, 99% of the weapons across the entire game when given infinite ammo don't fundamentally change and they don't even do anything to cause issues either.

My understanding is this entire nerf to ammo efficiency is because of a few "bad apple" weapons like Nightwatch Ogris and Acceltra causing lag with infinite ammo (which if we're being honest, that was already possible in fissures with the infinite ammo buff or when paired with Arcane Pistoleer so I'm not entirely certain why this is more of an issue now). This just comes across as a kneejerk reaction from DE to fix a problem they themselves caused because they didn't think enough/test enough before doing it and this kneejerk reaction, at best, doesn't help 99% of the weapons across the game.

3

u/Khelleton Certified Equinox Enjoyer 1d ago

Yep, a knee jerk reaction is exactly what it is. Just nerf the thing that caused the problem, not a bunch of other shit by proxy!
