[Request] if the world is 700% richer than in 1970, does the math for the average person and the top 0.01% break down like this?
Edit: To everyone who is doing the math, this is so cool and thank you. I am not a math person and wouldn’t even know how to start breaking this down or really understanding what considerations go into it.

[REQUEST] 60 year-old Mark Felix sets a new world record of 1:43.81 in the Hercules Hold, with Each pillar weighing 200 kg (441 lbs).
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Given that a portion of the weight is being held up by the ground, what weight and/or force is Mark Felix actually dealing with here? Do you take the weight of the column not directly over the base of column and that's it?
And maube less mathematics, does he have an advantage over others due to arm span etc? Or does the competition account for this?

[Request] What is the displacement of all the biomass in ocean?
I read an interesting piece of data this morning estimating that all the ships in the world raises the sea level by about 1/50th of a millimeter (which is pretty crazy imo). Now I’m wondering hoe much all the biomass in the ocean displaces? In other words, if all the fish, marine mammals and other aquatic animals suddenly disappeared, how much would it lower the sea level? Ready……. Go!

[Request] Number of diet coke cans to make a functional chair out of.
Listen I might have a slight diet coke addiction. Recently I've started collecting all the cans. I wonder how many (ish) I'd have to feasibly drink to melt them down into a chair.
For the record I'm about 6' and about 205 lbs. Bonus points if you have a chair design in mind.

[Request] How long does it take a can to reach equilibrium temp in a fridge?
Curious how long it would take for a 12 oz aluminum can of liquid to reach an equilibrium temperature inside a normal, average fridge. Assuming a normal fridge, and obviously how much the fridge is opened during the time, but I’m only interested in the perfect scenario of it staying closed for however long it takes. I suppose if you want to go above and beyond then it would be cool to know how a single open of the fridge would affect that! I’d also be interested to know how much the math changes (assuming it does at all) depending on what the drink is, such as the difference between a soda, beer, or like a sparkling water.
(The can is starting at room temperature)

[Request] How fast would someone need to kick their feet and move their hands to generate enough lift to fly or hover?
I’m wondering if it’s theoretically possible for a human to move their limbs in such a way and so fast that they can displace or propel enough air below them that makes their body levitate, sort of like a bird or dragonfly flapping their wings. Let’s just say this person is extremely durable and there’s no risk to tendon, ligament or nerve damage from moving so violently and I imagine it would be quite violent. I’m sure the size and weight of the person matters so just choose some numbers.

[Request] Star Trek: Teleporter vs Shuttles
Im watching Star Trek: TNG and clearly the benefits of teleportation are easy to enumerate, but they still sometimes take a shuttle. Im making two assumptions:
1) warp engines work on some version of alcubiere drives which are known to have immense energy requirements
2) the specific mechanism for creating/destroying matter is unknowable, but the amount of information is not (approx 7x10^27 atoms)
Just comparing those two actual elements, which would be more energy efficient - the warp drive or mapping/storing/transmitting all of that data inside of 5-10 seconds?

[Request] A longboarder hit 94 mph going downhill. If there were a ramp at the bottom, how high could he launch?
Saw this post about a downhill longboarder hitting 94 mph: https://www.reddit.com/r/longboarding/s/ZyF6DmaYCF
What if someone built a ramp at the bottom of that hill and he just kept going? How high could a person actually launch above the ground?
What kind of ramp would it have to be? I'm picturing something like a quarter pipe, but I've also seen those big straight wedge ramps, and ski jumps that curve and then go straight. Does the shape matter a lot at that speed, or is a ramp a ramp?
How big would it need to be? I assume if the curve is too tight he just gets flattened into the ramp.
How steep should the end be if you want max height? Straight up seems like the obvious answer but that also seems like a terrible idea.
How high would he actually go?
Assume he's a serious athlete in good shape, standing on a regular longboard with no bindings, and he wants to go as high as possible and survive the launch.

How many times would one person have to spit to fill a bathtub? How about a pool?
r/theydidthemath • u/FitSeries9768 • 2h ago
[Self] What a gas station actually keeps from a $50 fill-up
Rough math using industry averages. A 15-gallon fill costs around $50. Retail margins averaged a bit over 40 cents a gallon in 2025, so 15 × $0.40 ≈ $6 of gross margin. Card fees alone ran 8.4 cents a gallon in 2023, which is about $1.26 on this tank. After the rest of the station's costs, the video lands on roughly $2 of profit. How would you split the remaining costs between labor, rent and utilities?
