Mod [mod] Tightening requirements for political submissions

r/teenagers is not a political subreddit, and we never intend to be. However, in this current day and age, it is important for teenagers to discuss such topics. So while we aren't a political subreddt, we don't intend to restrict political posts.

However, it's become quite clear that that same idea of "[not] intending to restrict political posts." also does some harm. We don't currently have any rules surrounding such posts because it was never an intended talking point of this subreddit. This lack of proper guardrails has lead to an influx of falsified news, biased writeups, harmful rhetoric, etc.

Because of this, we're changing a few things.

1. Introducing a new flair

This flair will be appropriately named Political/Current Events. All submissions that fall under the umbrella of politics, and submissions that reference any notable current event, must assign this flair. Failure to do so will result in post removal.

Of course, to know when to assign that flair, you must know what counts as political. Politics doesn't solely mean government. Some examples of what would be considered political are:

  • Government: Elections, legislation, government agencies, politicians, public officials, and foreign policy.
  • Social and Ideological Issues: Public debates on civil rights, economic policy, war, identity, ideologies, public health, etc.

If you feel a post falls under the political umbrella, it probably does. Posts that also touch on certain current events are to be assigned this flair. The two often bleed into each other. Some examples of what would be considered a notable current event are:

  • Breaking & Developing News Stories: These invite rapid speculation, unverified rumors, and rage-bait-esque remarks before facts are verified.
  • Events Involving Public Officials or Institutions: Any current event involving heads of state, local government officials, law enforcement agencies, or legislative bodies.

With the introduction of a dedicated flair, it allows users to filter out political posts. We've been asked this a bit, so this is a fair middle ground to allow hiding, without totally restricting. On the flipside, it does also allow users to solely filter by political posts, which is a slippery slope. This is where some guardrails are introduced:

2. Karma requirements

From this point on, there'll be a community karma requirement to create or participate under Political/Current Events submissions. We won't share the threshold for obvious reasons, but it isn't egregious. The main purpose behind it is to prevent bad actors with un-established accounts, or some unwanted visitors from r/all from barging in and behaving in an uncivil manner.

Gaining subreddit karma is as easy as participating. It's easier for us to trust that you wont do harm if you show us.

3. Titles must be neutral

All titles under this umbrella, whether a discussion post or a screenshot of an article must be framed in a neutral manner. Neutality means the title answers simple, factual questions (who, what, where, and when).

Adding subjective adjectives, assigning motives (the why), using loaded language, and/or inserting personal commentary in a post title will violate this rule, leading to a post removal.

Also on the topic of neutrality:

4. Posts referencing a certain event MUST include a relevant, accessible, and verifiable source

Submissions will need to have a link in the body text or the image caption. This is to do away with unverified instagram screenshots, biased articles, and blatant lies. If referencing something, prove it is real. This also helps users do their own research and come to their own conclusions.

Users often also post events that occurred years ago. While not a "current event", they still typically fall under the umbrella. Providing links to events that occurred at any moment in time, whether current or not, is mandatory. This helps verify legitimacy, and can help inform users on when the issue occurred.

Lots of articles nowadays are paywalled. While paywalls usually indicate an article's quality, it is quite unrealistic to ask a subreddit of this demographic to pay for them. If a source you are attempting to use is locked behind any sort of payment, you must also provide a summary, either in the post caption or as a reply to Automod.

5. Political discussion posts will have a mandatory word count

It's nothing high, it's 100% achievable for those who actually want to discuss. This rule is in place to prevent one sentence rage posts and low effort commentary. Writing a few words does not offer enough context, and does not promote any meaningful discussion.

This only applies to text posts. Posts with an attached image aren't affected, often because the image contains enough context. Obviously don't use images to circumvent the word count.

That's all for now. Lot's of big changes that might take time to get used to. They will be in effect right away, and the flair should be visible to users as of now. Some rules will also be updated to reflect this.

Some parts of this may be changed depending on if it's too effective or not effective enough (karma requirements, word counts, automated vs manual checks). Nothing is ever set in stone, as mentioned at the beginning of this post we don't want to unnecessarily restrict political discussions.

Since this is a big change, feel free to leave any thoughts/critiques down below, or via modmail. Of course, please be reasonable with such comments, thank you!

Mod [mod] REMINDER ABOUT WITCH HUNTING POSTS.

With a large influx recently of posts showing weird dms please remember that this is NOT allowed on the subreddit as it is against Reddit TOS to do witch hunting. Posting images of DM conversations will lead to you getting banned, even if the person in your DMS is being weird, its still not allowed. So instead please report weird people in your dms directly to Reddit so they can be banned because we cant do anything about it.

Also as a reminder we aren't doing this to protect the weirdos or because we are defending what they are doing, we are simply just enforcing Reddit TOS.

Have a great day/night!

Serious Please stay safe online - Change this setting now

Im not a teen.. I'm a father. Seen a post made 40 minutes ago about some teenager in here that's being stalked by some ped creep in this sub. I cannot reply with images in the posts replies so I'm making this post for all you minors unaware of this setting.

Simply making your profile private isn't enough. People cannot stalk your profile if they can't see your posts, but your posts and replies still show up on search engines with a simple "Reddit (username)" search.

Turning this setting off will not magically wipe your history off of search engines, but in time they might go away... And your new comments/posts moving forward will not show up on search engines.

Using a screenshot of the user who's being stalked to show them what's going on and hope some of you guys unaware of this, changes that setting right away.

Stay safe online please, your online privacy and safety isn't a joke when it can have real world consequences.

Serious We broke up and i dont know what to do anymore

Post image
103 Upvotes

We broke up a couple months ago (june 8th), then i got with another girl for a 2 months , then we broke up(august 1st)

And ever since then i got depressed, tried to end it all , didnt have the balls to do it , now im gonna be on meds soon and life is boring more than before this whole situation
And its this weird stage in my life

I had my 16th birthday a month ago , with absolutely no one to celebrate with

But i learned a lot of things , one of them is to never put any relationship before your own well being and mental health
And if you ever feel low , please reach out to someone , the only reason i didnt do it already is because im too scared of wasting a chance for a better future on a phase that will probably be so short in comparison to everything else

All i have to say is fuck depression.

Serious As a french person i DESPISE how non french people keep on opening their fking mouth over the current french movements when they have no idea what the f is happening

Like genuinely. You have no idea what is actually happening, if you don't do at least a little bit of research, you have no right to talk about that.

"iT's bEcauSe Of tHe iMmiGraNts, LoOk at TheSe PeoPLe, aLL bLaCKs aNd AraBs"

Dude.

OF COURSE YOU'RE GONNA SEE BLACK AND ARAB PEOPLE, BECAUSE THAT'S ALL THEY WANNA SHOW ON TV, AND OF COURSE THERE ARE MANY OF THEM, THEY ARE THE ONES LIVING IN THE WORST CONDITIONS, WITH THE WORST SCHOOLS, IN THE POORER AREAS.

And no, it's not only black and arab people. Im fking white, and at all the protests ive been to (maybe 6 protests), at least 90% of the people were white.

"bUT ThEy'Re ViOlenT, LoOk aT tHem BreaKing THinGs"

Breaking things isn't violence, at best it is vandalism.

THE VIOLENCE IS FIRST COMING FROM THE FUCKING GOVERNMENT, AND THEN FROM THE COPS WHO HAVE STRANGLED PEOPLE, BEAT UP PEOPLE, SHOT PEOPLE IN THE HEAD WITH THEIR FKING RUBBER BULLETS AND GRENADE LAUNCHERS.

Multiple teens(and adults too) have lost an eye, lost an hand/arm, etc.

In the city i live in, even thoughts it's much smaller and that during the 17th october we were "only" 20 000, there has been multiple people who ended up hospitalized.

"But ThEy DesErVeD iT"

No.

Just no. Most of the people i saw being beat up by cops were just protesting, most of the time peacefully, and if not, the response from the cop is totally disproportionate.

That girl that was strangled wasn't a protester, she was just a teenager going to her highschool. She said nothing, did nothing.

That 14 boy who was shot with a grenade launcher and had his jaw fractured and lost teeth wasn't protesting, he was sitting besides the protest when cops started being agressive, he defended himself by kicking a cop, and then was shot.

There are many cases borderline PURPOSEFULLY running of teenagers with their cars and trucks. I belive a girl was hit by a police car at some point.

A journalist also had a cop on a bike hit his leg, purposefully.

And if their violence was proportionate, legitimate, the wouldn't trying so hard to prevent people from filming violences and arrests. They wouldn't hide or straight up not have their RIO (identification number)

They also wouldn't have cops dressing up and acting as protesters and acting violent to justify the cops violence.

"ThEre HaS bEeN mANY inJuRed cOps ToO"

  1. That's what the media say. Injured by who ? Teenagers ?

Fun fact, very few bad injuries have happened, including two cops who hurts themselves by making a grenade explode in their own car, one that was beat up by protesters after he was arresting someone in a river, literally putting that persons face under the water, or overall cops hurting themselves with their own weapons. Maybe there has been more actual injuries during the 17th october, because there were much more people, but id like to remind y'all that scratches, bruises and shit like that count as injuries for cops. Even respiratory issues from their own teargas. If they counted that for protesters, i can assure you that there would be thousands.

Also little reminder that tear gas can kill people with asthma or respiratory issues, can cause lung injuries, can cause menstrual disregulation, and even MISCARRIAGES.

And fun fact ? They, multiple times, tear gazed non protesters, bars, places near hospitals or kindergardens, these underground places, idk how it's called in english, yk where you wait for the metro. And guess what ? In these places, there are children, old people, pregnant women, sick people etc. They are putting these people in danger.

"ThE oNeS wHo bLOcK thEiR sCHoOls aRe JUst LAzY aNd Don'T wAnnA hAvE cLaSSes"

Lmao. Try blocking an high school, or even better, a university campus. Cause i did. I participated to the blocage of my campus. Woke up at 4 in the morning. Went there. It was barely 10°c. It was fucking raining. We had to bring trash bins, barriers, and random heavy concrete things (whatever they're called). We had over 10 buildings to block, each having multiple doors. It took hours.

We had to deal with people insulting us, with some teachers LITERALLY PHYSICALLY ASSAULTING US.

We are not fking lazy. We are doing our best. I came there despite my health issues, it's been a few days and i still have bad back pain from it. And im doing it again tomorrow.

YES, THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THE PROTESTS (OR BLOCAGES) WHO ARE VIOLENT, WHO VANDALIZE SMALL BUSINESSES THAT DIDN'T DESERVE IT AT ALL. THERE ARE ASSHOLES.

But there is also a high number of people using the protests as an occasion to be violent to vandalize, to steal. Non protesters.

Some many try to lessen the credibility of the movement by mentioning, for example, the high school that burnt. It was set on fire by people that were not students from that high school.

AND WHY DO Y'ALL CARE MORE ABOUT LITERALLY TRASH THAN PEOPLE'S EDUCATION, PEOPLE'S FREEDOM, PEOPLE'S HEALTH PEOPLE'S LIVES ???

WHY CARE MORE ABOUT THAT THAN LIVING HUMAN BEINGS ???

THERE HAS BEEN DEATHS. PEOPLE HAVE DIED THIS SATURDAY.

DO YOU NOT FKING GET IT ?

There are many other things i wanna talk about. but this would be way too long.

Discussion If you're tired of AI slop, go watch WILDWOOD (READ DESC)

Thumbnail
gallery
65 Upvotes

WILDWOOD is a significantly beautiful handcrafted wonder that spent 16 years in production from the same hands that made Coraline, Kubo And The Two Strings, Missing Link, and ParaNorman.

This film will change lives, there are messages of nature, sacrifice, and love.

If you hate AI and are tired of seeing suckish AI slop, and If you're a huge fan of animation and film or Coraline, WILDWOOD is just the film for you.

NOTE: LAIKA is not responsible for any emotional trauma or scars that this movie has caused. Notable elements include (WARNING HEAVY SPOILERS)the first scene in the film being suicide, where a mechanical boy prepares to jump off a balcony after finding out he's not living and is just a machine. Several characters get killed on-screen, there is a dinner scene where coyotes rip open the lifeless bodies of their prey with visible pools and splashes of blood everywhere. By the end of the film, Prue is covered in stains of someone else's blood. A supporting character gets shot with an arrow on-screen. Visible injuries involving children.

Anyways, go see the film if you can at a theatre near you, if your theatre isn't showing the film, your theatre is TRASH
