About half a year ago my laptop stopped being able to consistently detect displays, first noticed through the HDMI port. It usually does not connect to my monitor, but on rare circumstances it's detected. Ex. I leave my HDMI cord plugged into my laptop on my desk for the night, despite it not working. I've woken up twice in the morning to it being projected to my monitor; but this doesn't always happen. On the rare occasion it connects, it doesn't have any flickering or disconnection issues when plugged in. When I unplug it from this state (I have to take my laptop to uni) and replug it in the same day, it usually reconnects for me. Of course, this luck eventually wares off and then I'm at the mercy again.
The issue is not my monitor as this issue doesn't exist when connecting other devices, and this issue persists when attempting to use other displays on my laptop (such as a TV). I've tried other HDMI cords as well to no success.
I've attempted some of the following "generic" troubleshoots:
- Restarting my computer
- Using a different power adapter
- Checking update status (Windows says I'm up to date)
-Attempting updating my Graphics driver re: Device Manager > Display adapters > Update Driver > Automatically Search for Drivers (and then Windows says I already have the best driver for my device installed)
- Attempting to force detect monitor on settings
- Using an adapter in attempt of a band-aid solution*
One of the most interesting issues to me is that I will use an adapter in one of my laptop's USB-C ports (PC detects the adapter, which is the satechi 8-in-1 USB-C hub) and connect the HDMI cord through there, but it still will not detect the display or project. I tried this work-around with my iPad though and it works. So it's weird to me that it isn't (at least just) the HDMI port that has issues if it is a hardware issue. I chose the tag "OPEN - Hardware" because I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware issue.
