So Joe Rogan lies again.

What a surprise, am I right.

Jamie, pull up whether he’s right

330

u/bloedit Sep 18 '26

It took him supporting Trump for Americans to realize his ideology and politics.

Before that you'd be the one cancelled for calling out all the red flags in every interview.

Heck, even now people will say he was totally liberal before.

354

u/TheIllustriousWe Sep 18 '26

I think Joe used to be a fairly standard “brogressive” - leans left on most economic and social issues, except when it comes to anything a feminist might believe, in which case they tack hard to the right.

But as he got older and filthy rich, his social circle transformed from regular people to other wealthy eccentrics peddling their own conspiracy theories, and hack comics whose careers are dependent upon staying in Joe’s good graces. And to this day he’s put no thought into how that happened, so much so that he seems genuinely confused about why he can’t call himself liberal anymore after endorsing a fascist for President.

140

u/bloedit Sep 18 '26 edited Sep 18 '26

A brogressive does not lean left, they argue they lean left.

They support politically liberal or left policies as long as the latter doesn't seem to concern or directly benefit the former.

On that point let's not forget that politics and ideology are not the same. People may u-turn their politics, but ideology is very hard to truly change.

And it wasn't just his misogyny that stood out, all forms of discrimination (especially racism) as well as anti-intellectualism (just asking questions) have been a notable issue with him.

64

u/pbjamm Canada Sep 18 '26

Lean Left = smokes pot

5

u/Plow_King Sep 18 '26

left handed cigarette

14

u/Glum-Sheepherder-787 Sep 18 '26

Exactly, thank you so so much for calling that out. People's tendency to excuse and enable is what has me feeling so hopeless.

9

u/TheIllustriousWe Sep 18 '26

That's a good point. There was likely a disconnect between what he claimed to believe and how he actually voted, if he even voted at all back then.

2

u/explodedsun Sep 18 '26

The old word for that was NIMBY

31

u/Psytherea New York Sep 18 '26

brogressive? you mean libertarian?

25

u/TheIllustriousWe Sep 18 '26

I think Joe was probably more fiscally liberal than your standard libertarian, at least before that $100M check from Spotify cleared. Like it’s hard to imagine 2012-era Joe calling for a flat income tax, or abolishing it altogether.

7

u/Unknown-Meatbag Sep 18 '26

You say that like there's a tangible difference with libertarians. They're just Republicans who smoke weed.

15

u/TheIllustriousWe Sep 18 '26

Libertarians = Republicans who smoke weed

Brogressives = liberals who hate women

2

u/Unknown-Meatbag Sep 18 '26

Touchė, can't argue with that one.

I recall him at some point saying to raise taxes...

5

u/obeytheturtles Sep 18 '26

The whole time his podcast was popular his bit was interviewing fringe ideas. This meant he did a lot of conspiracy stuff, and lot of woowoo stuff, and in that era, those topics leaned right. Particularly at the end of the second Obama term, we were really getting into like the era of Jordan Peterson and the birth certificates and Pizzagate and the rise of the alt right and the manosphere, and he definitely played a big role in platforming those ideas.

3

u/DangerousLoner Sep 18 '26

And then he saw Epstein and decided to side with the bad guys in the Conspiracy. Killer AI Robots and mass surveillance is good actually. And his friend Peter defended Epstein so who really cares about pedophiles trafficking young girls into sexual exploitation? How old are his teen daughters again?

13

u/LEDKleenex Sep 18 '26

Power corrupts almost always. People don't like hearing it, but most people only lean one direction because it benefits them in the moment. Then they will spin up an identity and a moral justification to convince even themselves that they truly believe in it.

It takes strong personality with conviction to maintain those beliefs when your circumstances change. It takes even more conviction to act (knowingly) against your own interests.

2

u/DangerousLoner Sep 18 '26

I miss Dolly Parton.

4

u/Pinguino2323 Utah Sep 18 '26

The vibe I've always gotten is that he's just kind of dumb and as a result will just agree with what anyone who is a half decent debater or semi charismatic speaker tells him. He doesn't seem to stand for anything and just seems to agree with what the guest on show thinks, minus the covid stuff where he really went hardcore anti science for some reason.

2

u/saqwarrior Sep 18 '26

That's one I've never heard, and it's fucking perfect.

I also like that it mirrors a portmanteau of bro and regressive, as a hidden subtext critique.

2

u/sixwax Sep 18 '26

"Brogressive" is just a great modern term for Libertarian.

The age-old trope about libertarians just not having thought things through (e.g. where do roads come from) still holds, unfortunately.

2

u/Freenore Sep 18 '26

He's socially conservative, fiscally liberal. It is why he also likes Bernie Sanders as he stays clear of the culture wars and has class politics at the centre of his agenda.

This is a phenomena that should be spoken about much more — both Trump and Sanders share supporters because they're tapping into the same voter base. The white lower middle class and working class people who feel they've been left behind as their situation hasn't improved.

2

u/novakaj87 Sep 18 '26

Brogresive is a great way to put it.

I do believe that he is left leaning, but I also believe he is an idiot and that because of his popularity, he causes a lot of damage when he shares some bad advice.

He did also endorse Bernie sanders in the past...

It's too bad, I used to listen to him a lot until he spread the anti-vax rhetoric. I thought he was a good interviewer but I can't listen to him after that...

He was arguing that the moon landing was a hoax 20+ years ago.
Dude has been dumb.

I was a big fan of his podcast back in the day, not because it was educational. Somewhere in the mid 2010s, probably when he had the AIDS-isn't-real guy on, I realized I had heard all the comedy store stories and waxing poetic on chimps that I cared to and that the non-comedian guests had gotten... weird.

2

He is lying, people are not THAT fucking stupid. Yes, he is dumb as rocks. But he has very consciously made the choice to support the scumbag piece of shit that is Trump for ages. He has made tonnes of money doing so too. Excusing his lies with "He's dumb" is being way too fucking kind to pieces of shit like him.

Like when people though Ivanka was some sort of leftist who would "talk sense" to Trump or all the people who still have this weird way of excusing Melania by saying she is a victim, when it is evident she is just as bad as her horrid husband.

5

u/makos5267 Sep 18 '26

Schrodingers Rogan. You can never tell if he’s compromised or he’s actually just that dumb. For the longest time I thought it was the latter, lately he’s been giving me a sneaking suspicion that he’s being willfully ignorant to be a gop mouth piece, but now again he’s tilting back towards maybe he is just that dumb

10

4

"Powerful combination genetic wise, right? You get the body of the Black man and then you get the mind of the white man altogether in some strange combination.”

“That doesn’t, by the way, mean that Black people don’t have brains. It’s a different brain.”

Joe Rogan in 2011

Rogan was recounting a trip to Philadelphia with friends to see Planet of the Apes. Their taxi dropped them at a cinema in a predominantly Black neighbourhood. In the original story, Rogan said: “We walk into Planet of the Apes. We walked into Africa, dude.”

He’s always been an idiot and being left wing/liberal leaning doesn’t mean you can’t be racist.

31

u/Bermnerfs I voted Sep 18 '26

Seriously, people who think the left doesn't have its own racists have never talked to liberal boomers and have never visited Boston.

Some of the most racist shit I have ever heard came from older wealthy northeast liberals. There's a lot of truth to the "White Southerners will accept a black neighbor, but not a black boss, while white Northerners will accept a black boss, but not a black neighbor" trope.

4

u/MF_D00MSDAY Sep 18 '26

I’m from Texas and currently in Boston, the racism in the northeast is not even close to the south so you must not know very many from anywhere else lol but yeah there are definitely plenty of them up here, but it’s more ignorant racism than hate filled if that makes sense. I’ve never heard people talking about wanting brown and black people to die up here.

13

I used to enjoy certain episodes early on. He’d have some weird guests on talking about wacky shit. Some were genuine and interesting and had some merit to what they were saying, others were lunatics and had no valid points but were interesting to listen to at least. He was an idiot but at the time he typically didnt try to pretend he wasn’t an idiot. Now he thinks he knows a lot more than he does and insufferable.

I’ve listened back to some older things and the signs were there but between him not being as overt and me being younger at the time it didnt seem nearly as bad

2

u/TheIllustriousWe Sep 18 '26

I used to really only listen to the episodes with comedians, and I usually enjoyed them. But looking back it’s hard to imagine that I ever truly liked listening to Joe and Joey Diaz talk for four hours about fucking nothing important at all, and it feels like the only reason I did is because there were so fewer podcasts to choose from back then.

Also manipulation by tech oligarchs, foreign governments, our own government, and other powers-that-be that saw him as useful. I see it as more around 2016 that the shift started. He wasn't hurting anybody talking about Bigfoot and ancient aliens before then. But in the run up to the 2016 election, there was this big push where fringe stuff got normalized: Alex Jones went mainstream, Q-Anon, PizzaGate... all of that stuff. That was when he went from semi-lovable meathead stoner to something more destructive.

He was a MAGA shill well before COVID. He indorsed Trump over Hillary because "you just can't trust a woman with nuclear weapons"

I remember when there was a couple week period during the 2016 election where it was obvious Bernie was not going to get the Dem nomination but was still in and that is exactly when Rogan indorsed him briefly before doing a complete 180 and indorsing Trump. He did this to build cheap clout, if you pay attention he does this shit in a 'lather, rinse, repeat' cycle. Right now is back in the build clout phase, showing people how rational but free thinking he is. No doubt he will use the clout he attempting to build now to later sell people on the next right wing, oligarchy promoting narcissist.

I would say it more changed with the people he had on starting around the lead up to the 2016 elections. That's around the time the malicious disinformation distribution ramped up in our society in general, and he regularly had people on that ate it all up. He had always had on occasional alien abductees or conspiracy theorists, but after that point those became his main kind of guest, and therefore his main audience, which reinforced having those guests on, which... Its the other side of the same coin of the conservative trope that they don't really care about people until it happens to them or someone close to them. Joe is a "liberal" until he finds out it requires occasional inconvenience to think about the larger groups' needs instead of only prioritizing yourself, and then he's out.

Specifically it changed with the episode in March/April with the immunologist who told him kettlebells and saunas (he actually asked the scientist if he was aware of heat shock proteins) would not strengthen his immune system and that he was as vulnerable as any other middle aged man to a novel virus.

He did not like that one bit and took a HARD turn towards horse de-wormer from that point.

Trying to push someone as influential as him towards Trump is really fucking dumb. Same goes for Tucker. If they want to abandon the ship, good. Let them. We don't have to sing their praises or become their fans. We can just be glad that they turned away from a major fascist movement, which is more important than gloating over how much better we are.

2

I agree with the sentiment, but at the same time Trump won the popular vote across the country, so we're going to need to allow people to change their minds if we ever want anything to change.

7

u/Adelaidey Sep 18 '26

we're going to need to allow people to change their minds if we ever want anything to change

Serious question: what does "allowing" somebody else to change their mind look like to you?

Speaking personally, I've changed my mind on some big issues in my lifetime, and it's never occured to me to check if I'm "allowed". I'm not sure I'd even know where to start. What specifically are you advocating for here?

The problem is those people are still either stupid or have morals I don't agree with. I'm not going back to hanging out with friends or family we cut off. Not unless they truly repudiate every heinous thing they said for years.

And they won't.

5

u/FlipGordon Sep 18 '26

Hey I totally get that as well which is why I just said we need to "allow" people to change their minds. If they do and they understand where they went wrong, that's amazing. But if they're going to double down and never look inward, then that's on them and nobody should feel forced to forgive or be associated with them.

I can't state enough that I'm not trying to argue or dispute your feelings, just speaking into the internet's expanse incase anyone else needs to hear it, ya know?

1

u/Diantr3 Sep 18 '26

We can still be glad he's no longer using that influence to fight for Trump, no matter how profoundly stupid he is and damaging he was to society, and not push him back into fascism.

37

u/a-bser Sep 18 '26

Yeah now he's only using that influence to push pseudo science, anti vax, and flat earth theory, which the majority of people who believe in that are right leaning.

He may not be fighting for trump, but he's allowing the messages that support him get through unchecked and unchallenged

You don’t get to light your house on fire and then say you don’t like fires because they burn down your house.

91

u/epigenie_986 Florida Sep 18 '26

I mean, you can say whatever you want. Doesn’t mean you’ll have any credibility afterwards.

47

u/StaysAwakeAllWeek Sep 18 '26

Credibility isnt necessary to sway his fans. They arent the most free thinking bunch

9

u/epigenie_986 Florida Sep 18 '26

Which is why he even has a platform at all.

That doesn't negate the truth of the comment you replied to. It's a net benefit for people to walk away from them and we should be happy about it, even if those people themselves are shitty

5

u/blender4life Sep 18 '26

"Walking away from" requires a lot more from someone in his position than just saying "I don't like trump anymore". Like taking actual action of not having right wing shit spewed on your platform, but he won't. The moment we have pandemic 2.0 or Jan 6th second reckoning he will be right back to "just asking questions".

Just wait a few months and he's back to sucking Trump off. I don't believe he actually is walking away from that.

Okay and when he comes back later and votes republican again?

How many times do you need to fall for it?

15

u/TheAskewOne Sep 18 '26

As soon as he talks to a maga person. That guy never had an original opinion in his life.

64

u/AwildYaners Hawaii Sep 18 '26 edited Sep 18 '26

All of us normal people can happily judge a dude that’s so clearly lied and switched sides.

But this is a good thing. What’s worse is if he doubles down, with his platform. This at least shows the cultists that you can change your mind.

If we have any hope that our country can be saved from this mental virus, we basically need this to happen.

I look at this as a social litmus test. Even if it’s probably just about the money and ego, it means it’s effected his bottom line; we’re also in a new world where celebrities can’t be apolitical, the politics have become too radical that you have to pick a side.

Are you with the proletariat, or with the ruling class?

I wouldn’t put Tucker in the same boat though. That dude is just trying to position for a “new Republican Party.”

26

u/DrMeatBomb Sep 18 '26

He didn't change sides. He's still pushing the same Republican propaganda he's been pushing for 6 years, now. He makes an offhand remark denouncing Trump when Trump's at his least popular and you people can't wait to play along with his enlightened centrism.

Except that not how any of this stuff works.

Like I get it mind virus is a nice little metaphor but it’s far from actually descriptive of what’s happening.

The anti intellectual, conspiracy brain, chauvinism and bigotry that he propagated is responsible for today’s rise of Fascism.

If you give him a pass and let him return to the same stuff the conditions that created the rebirth of fascism will remain.

It’s not a virus that suddenly came out of nowhere, it wasn’t one thing and it’s as old as the nation.

The global resurgence of fascism came out of the society it now attacks, simply expecting everything to get better when you return to the status quo that created the problem is a solution.

It’s not about political parties it’s about ideology.

2

u/caseyanthonyftw Sep 18 '26

Rather than thinking Rogan is going to support anything leftwing, it's more likely he's just going to support whoever the next loudest, idiot grifter is. He's just seeing the writing on the wall now that the average maga is spending all their money on gas.

10

u/mancitycon Sep 18 '26

There's nothing to fall for if you are of an average intelligence. The guy you replied to said we don't have to sing their praises and be their fans. Just be glad they're willing to move away from fascism. So let Joe have the chance to do so

15

u/OuijaFox Sep 18 '26

Not until that walking thumb admits what he did.
If he can admit what he did and that he knows he was wrong openly, loudly, on his podcast, on mic, and released into the world, then I’ll allow the space for Rogan to walk away from his fascist buddies.

Until then he’s still got them all the way down his throat and I can’t understand his gargling.

21

u/LordViciousElbow Sep 18 '26

The guy also said "Trying to push someone as influential as (Joe Rogan) is really fucking dumb." I'm guessing he missed Rogan glazing Trump's sack for most of a decade.

Tucker has always been far right and still is. He’s still fascist he just doesn’t like the current flavor

5

u/Made_Human_Music Sep 18 '26

The problem is I don’t think he or Tucker are turning away from fascism, they’re just mad about this current version of it because it did something they don’t like. They’ll latch onto the next monsters to come along and go right back where they were

And even if they don’t do that they’re both partly responsible for getting people to support this mess. The only way they’ll deserve forgiveness is if they do something significant to help stop it but I don’t think they will. If they can’t do that they need to go away

But if I’m wrong and they’ve truly realized the error of their ways and are legitimately sorry then they should understand and accept our derision. If being told they suck for supporting that demented pedophile pushes them back into supporting him then they were never really sorry

I see too many MAGAts say that the reason they support Trump is because of how mean we were to them for supporting Trump. I never bought that with the low level trash and I definitely don’t buy it from the high levels either. Supporting Trump is a moral failure and a choice they all made, that deserves nothing but contempt for a very long time

If you want to forgive them or even just give them a chance that’s great, but be careful. These people can’t be trusted

41

u/fiercedeitysponce Sep 18 '26

Be cautious of wrapping Tucker into this. He’s a known anti-Semite and is likely throwing in behind Abdul because he’s trying to co-opt the tiktok anti-Zionists into his genocide fantasy. He will always be a snake.

31

u/EagleCatchingFish Oregon Sep 18 '26

Exactly. Tucker Carlson needs to be understood by his beliefs—not his aggregate position on a left right spectrum. Carlson is an isolationist, a very cynical and hypocritical type of populist, a white supremacist, a virulent anti-Semite, and more or less a paleo-conservative. If this were a different time, he'd be a John Bircher. He has not "seen the light". He's just seen that there will soon be a day where the white Christian nationalists on the far right won't be looped around MAGA and where populists of all stripes might be re-aligned. He wants to get there before they do so that he can have power.

I also think the problem with most BoTh SiDeS crowd is they also almost always vote republican and regret it. Until we get voting records proving that he has been voting democrat. I'm going to call BS or straight lies and needs to lie (miss wording intended) in the bed he's made.

Rogan is a very open right winger who openly endorsed Trump and didn't let Kamala on his show and did multi hour puff pieces with Trump and other right wingers and pushed narratives about children wearing cat suits and pooping in little boxers in schools and he worships the billionaire class... like come on. he's lying. you're being had. trump just isn't popular now.

the point is valid for people doing this earnestly but he's not one of them.

4

u/gbiypk Sep 18 '26

It might just be that Joe sees which way the political winds are blowing, and he's repositioning himself to profit accordingly. I don't know if he's going to swing far enough to have someone like AOC or Mamdani on his show, but if he's less extreme then that's a good thing. Way too many young men listen to him religiously.

You really aren’t seeing the full picture here. Joe doesn’t have a stance and will sway his opinion to keep favor. He’s useless

3

u/DeuceGnarly Sep 18 '26

Agree somewhat, but I am not gloating over being better than this idiot. I want everyone to loudly oroclaim he's an idiot, so that other idiots hear there are consequences, even if only in the form of social pressure, and they might think twice before mindlessly following another idiot . Stupid people are fucking stupid, and shouldn't be put on pedestals.

Last time Rogan had Bernie on, Rogan went hard and disagreed on a few topics. Most felt it was more abrasive than the trump interview.

Tucker was a fashy racist long before Trump was President

4

u/Internet-Cryptid Canada Sep 18 '26

You're out of your mind if you think Tucker Carlson is turning a new leaf. He's a paid Russian shill and operative against democracy.

3

u/sexisfun1986 Sep 18 '26

I genuinely don’t understand how people think politics or ideology work.

Because it sure doesn’t have anything to do with reality.

Him being a an anti intellectual bigot but with a vote democrat T-shirt doesn’t stop the rise of fascism.

You do realize that literally Mussolini was a talking head that called himself a socialist.

They didn’t turn away from it.
They supported it and pushed it and platformed it.

They are turning away from the fact that they don’t want to be blamed for their role in what happened. They are trying to hide from accountability and your comment does nothing but allow them to try to weasel out of being held accountable.

Fuck Rogan and his orange stained tongue.
And the same for Ben “I’ve never made my wife wet” Shapiro and every other loser that platformed these ghouls for money.

But an extra fuck off to anyone trying to give them enough breathing room to continue to be pieces of shit.

Eh, it's not a lie when it's a performer saying lines. Apparently market research says there's more money to be had pivoting to liberalism, or at least doing some controversy before returning to goose stepping.

He's liberal in that he's not religious and doesn't go to church every week.

The backbone of the Republican party are evangelicals, who make up its largest cohort and who regularly attend church.

Joe "Where the wind blows" Rogan.

Either way, this is a positive indication that the pendulum is shifting back to left-wing again.

1

u/dogs_gt_cats Sep 18 '26

While yes, he is lying, it is an interesting datapoint about what direction the wind is blowing.

1

u/Someofusremembersome Sep 18 '26

To be fair, just after he mentions the fact that he has been left wing all his life, he says that he did support him and laughs about it.

1

Joe Rogan has been on the microphone for how many years now. Can't an AI tool digest all that content (omg I feel bad for the AI) and point out discrepancies with timestamps?

1

u/The_Autarch Sep 18 '26

i believe that he believes that he's telling the truth. and he did actually sound like a leftist 20 years ago...
