This subreddit would have had you convinced he was going to be releasing the whole game though.

u/chilll_vibe Aug 27 '26

He very well might have, but that doesn't change the fact he was an obvious grifter all along

403

u/eddy_brooks Aug 27 '26

Didn’t he explicitly say his plan was to pull the money all along?

I read that he told people it is not an investment and that he will be pulling the money

188

u/Super_Range45 Aug 27 '26

At this point you had to basically lack a brain to see buying the coin as anything less than a donation to him.

129

u/WeTheSalty Aug 28 '26

Wasn't that explicitly the point of the coin, to 'support' him? Were people really buying it thinking they were investing? Peak crypto bro investor behavior if so

49

u/Then-Departure4896 Aug 28 '26

I thought that was every meme coin? They’re all rug pulls, why is anyone ever surprised by it

Dont think so, he burned tokens to "prove" he won't do it

he burned 1 mil in coins probably hoping to get more in return, looks like it didnt pay off

1 mil on paper, if they actually tried to sell 1 million worth, the price would have quickly collapsed (see what's happening now), so it's not like it was real money in the first place

How is an electronic currency burned?

48

u/Gimetulkathmir Aug 27 '26

You send it to a digital address that doesn't have an access key, which effectively removes them from circulation. Money goes in but it can't come out.

23

u/InSAniTy1102 Aug 27 '26

Could you "fake" burn? I don't understand how you can create a Wallet or send it to a wallet without a key but there being no possible way of creating a key or cloaking a legit wallet as a burn wallet?

Sorry if I sound retarded I know nothing of the space.

22

u/Gimetulkathmir Aug 27 '26

You can, but there are burn addresses that are public and known to be legitimate burn addresses. Think of it like dropping money into a fire. Sure, you can say you did it, but for these addresses just sending it to the address is proof it was burned and then there are plenty of people/programs watching it to then remove the currency from circulation and calculations and stuff.

Yeah so heres my question to you.

What makes more sense?

Me providing various wallets for people to donate to, if they so choose.

Or:

'YO GUYS HERE MY BRAND NEW SHITCOIN, OMG LOOK THE CHARTS GOING UP, HOLY SHIT FOMO, FOMO GUYS, LOOK AT THE GAINS!'

aaaand rugpull.

It's very obvious to anyone with the bare minimum intelligence, that this guy was just trying to fleece a bunch of morons. Yet people still defended him lol.

Even someordinarygamers said: "there was a lot of allegations that CyberLak was profiting off of this crypto. And so, I I believe, you know, in his last leak, he said they burned all the developer tokens and he's just working off the trading volume at this point. So if you look at it, you can see that the trading volume was like 25something million. This token has actually went up. There have been because of all of this attention and drama, there are now 30,000 plus bagholders"

Xatab did his repacks for the love of the game, he always said so too, never took donations, never took any sponsor money or malware money

But I'd say if you see a giant coin ad in every video? They would only be there if the author wants to get rich off them

Of course he was a grifter, but so is Rockstar. I'm just happy to see grifters fighting each other.

The amount of cope below my comment is hilarious.

120

u/Chief_White_Halfoat Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

I feel like the definition of grifter is becoming stretched beyond belief if we are just applying it randomly where it doesn't even make sense. Words have actual meanings, and grifter is a useful one. Please let's not apply it to everything.

There is not really a context in which it makes sense to apply it to Rockstar.

It hadn't been unheard of - near finished copies of Half-Life 2 and Tears of the Kingdom found their way to the public before release day, as well as the entire plot of The Last of Us 2.

But the longer this guy stretched the drama out, the clearer it became that he either had nothing, or had some bizarre reason that he was never going to release anything.

I guess another Occam's Razor possibility is that whatever he actually snuck out of Rockstar's servers was so minor, it was a few minutes of MP4 footage of early beta testers messing around.

Considering they subpoenad his info from Microsoft, it's kinda not long before he gets caught. His time was ticking. 250k is enough to buy a flight out of the country and still come out with a sizeable profit.

He stated from the beginning that he didn't have any social media accounts for that explicit reason.

From the moment I heard these leaks I thought it was an elaborate marketing scheme to get people talking. It worked regardless of what tin foil hat stuff I come up with.

Ever since sonic was released with a ridiculous face which sparked outrage. But, ultimately changed the face to normal and got a tonne of "free" publicity. This is doing the same.

Honestly I'm probably off the mark because it's very elaborate. But I can't trust what is real or not anymore.

10

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

A coworker was speculating that the leak was deliberate, viral marketing by Rockstar. I thought it was a ridiculous concept at the time, but now, I'm not so sure. The "leaker" has made a lot of money off this situation, without doing any real damage to Rockstar.

Especially since he burned over $1M in dev tokens a few days ago lol. Maybe he fumbled, or maybe the $250K isn't accurate

43

u/Hunefer1 Aug 27 '26

No he didn't fumble with burning "over $1M" in dev tokens. He would have never gotten anything close to $1M by selling them since that market is so illiquid that he would have immediately tanked the price by selling and only would have gotten a few hundred k like he did right now. But it's totally possible (and I think very likely) that he slowly sold coins over time during the days he was putting out leaks. This way the low liquidity is way less of a problem and it's also close to impossible to trace to him. I also think burning the dev tokens was planned from the start to gain trust.

These 250k where just the rest of the liquidity people had in that coinmarket

Least surprising Rug pull to date...

Is it a rugpull? Wasnt this literally seen as giving money to the leeker as a thank you? Who was buying this thinking that it was going to make them money?

He could’ve taken donations in XMR and then it would’ve been actually hard to trace.

37

u/Mnawab Specs/Imgur Here Aug 27 '26

Yes, but under the crypto more people were willing to donate because there was a chance they could’ve pulled out with him if they timed it right. It gave people more of a reason to invest in it, and when a crypto coin all of a sudden starts skyrocketing in value, it will start getting noticed from outside factors, which would also start pumping into it as well. The value went up to like 30 million.

I saw that the cash was just in transaction fees and it isn't really a rugpull, just a natural crash.

>It seems a pretty small prize for gaining the attention of the world's authorities

In many countries $250000 can easily last entire lifetime and rockstar does not have magical cooperation from the whole world's authorities, in fact there are more authorities that won't give any fuck about them than there are who will.

30

u/PM_ME_SAD_STUFF_PLZ GTX 5080, AMD 9800X3D, 64GB DDR5 Aug 27 '26

It can last a lifetime, but if the leaker is 20 years old then the average draw would have to be about 4k a year, say 5k a year to account for interest. There's about $400/mo, which is great to have in every country but it's also not all that much. Maybe free rent for life.

37

u/cadaada Aug 27 '26

That amount is something someone would have to work for 50~ years in brazil with minimum wage (if both get increased by inflation ofc), its not just "not all that much"

Somewhere in the rural areas of Kazakhstan you can live your life perfectly fine on $400/mo, and no Rockstar will ever get you there.

42

u/Able-Swing-6415 Aug 27 '26

But you're also living in rural Kazakhstan.. so I guess you win some, you lose some

8

u/SapientApe_ Aug 27 '26

Access to some of the best potassium in eastern Europe, it's a win, win situation!

3

u/Caipirinha-Aguada Aug 28 '26

In rural Brazil, that money can afford you bananas for a lifetime, it's also a lot of potassium.

It's not so much giving a fuck about rockstar but rockstar going to law enforcement to have this guy arrested.

The charges are big. Hacking a business and stealing their IP. If they indeed steal a fully functional build of the game, thats even bigger.

Illegally leaking the game.

Creating a shitcoin and profiting from their illegal activities.

Like this kind of stuff carries severe penalties and easily jail time. If this guy lives in a country with any kind of copywrite law, AML or extradition even to the US. They are going to be fucked. Rockstar is not going to stop until they are in jail.

Tbh that doesn't seem that big when you lay it out like that.

If they get caught that money is going to evaporate.  Even if it doesn't get seized as a criminal asset it's going straight to lawyers fees.  $250k just isn't a lot of money.

3

For a moment, I thought it was guerilla marketing. When he mentioned burning tokens, it felt like the most hilarious tropes of crypto scam bros was being played out for laughs.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did turn out to be a Rockstar ploy. But I think they'd draw the line at financial crimes... Well, thanks to the trump admin, they'd be legitimate capitalist actions.

Can yall give me a tldr on why he chose a shitty memecoin in the big 26 instead of a simple donation link?

4

u/MrDeeJayy Ryzen 7 5700X | AMD RX 6700 XT | DDR4-3200 32GB Aug 28 '26

Donations would have gone directly to them, and the transactions would likely have been very transparent. So transparent infact that rockstar would have had police raiding their address within 30 minutes.

As much as the memecoin is fucking dumb and shit, unlike most memecoins that are literally backed nothin and more nothin, at least cyberleek was smart enough to back his meme coin on something slightly more tangible than nothing: frequent leaks.

Tempted to larp and say i know cyberleek to see if rockstar sends goons to my door, would love to show them my medieval sword collection, see if they'll add any of them as weapons to gta 6.

TBF to him wasnt he basically saying "inflating my memecoin is the only way you can donate to me without me being traced". IE he was pretty transparent that it was a pump and dump.

3

u/Mattrockj Intel I7-13700 / 4070ti / 64GB Ram / 4TB SSD Aug 28 '26
