This subreddit would have had you convinced he was going to be releasing the whole game though.

1.4k

u/chilll_vibe Aug 27 '26

He very well might have, but that doesn't change the fact he was an obvious grifter all along

412

u/eddy_brooks Aug 27 '26

Didn’t he explicitly say his plan was to pull the money all along?

I read that he told people it is not an investment and that he will be pulling the money

189

u/Super_Range45 Aug 27 '26

At this point you had to basically lack a brain to see buying the coin as anything less than a donation to him.

126

u/WeTheSalty Aug 28 '26

Wasn't that explicitly the point of the coin, to 'support' him? Were people really buying it thinking they were investing? Peak crypto bro investor behavior if so

50

u/Then-Departure4896 Aug 28 '26

I thought that was every meme coin? They’re all rug pulls, why is anyone ever surprised by it

16

u/redalchemy6 Aug 28 '26

Because their cousin got rich on bitcoin so they think they'll catch the next big one lol

2

u/charleydaves Aug 28 '26

but but the white paper told me it was going to end hunger in africa

4

u/Free-Pound-6139 Aug 28 '26

But that was my retirement plan!!

141

u/vliukkiang Aug 27 '26

Dont think so, he burned tokens to "prove" he won't do it

262

u/rofflemow . Aug 27 '26

Which is a common rugpuller strat.

26

u/Inevitable-Bedroom56 Aug 28 '26

he burned 1 mil in coins probably hoping to get more in return, looks like it didnt pay off

1 mil on paper, if they actually tried to sell 1 million worth, the price would have quickly collapsed (see what's happening now), so it's not like it was real money in the first place

0

u/Markus4781 Aug 28 '26

I asked a krypto bro and he said he couldn't have just pulled 1mil. Would've been impossible. He had that on paper.

3

u/Kichigai Ryzen 7 9700X/32GB / Intel Arc B580 12GB Aug 28 '26

Dunno, he still walked away with a quarter million more than he started with.

49

u/vliukkiang Aug 27 '26

I know, but I haven't seen him being as upfront as the first guy made it seem, could be wrong

1

u/King_Chochacho Aug 28 '26

Didn't he burn like $1m worth though? What's the point of doing that just to cash out at $250k a few days later?

Or was that value inflated/fake somehow?

The 250k is just the fees, not what he actually pulled out. He likely made out with way, way more

13

u/prince_0611 Aug 27 '26

How is an electronic currency burned?

46

u/Gimetulkathmir Aug 27 '26

You send it to a digital address that doesn't have an access key, which effectively removes them from circulation. Money goes in but it can't come out.

25

u/InSAniTy1102 Aug 27 '26

Could you "fake" burn? I don't understand how you can create a Wallet or send it to a wallet without a key but there being no possible way of creating a key or cloaking a legit wallet as a burn wallet?

Sorry if I sound retarded I know nothing of the space.

21

u/Gimetulkathmir Aug 27 '26

You can, but there are burn addresses that are public and known to be legitimate burn addresses. Think of it like dropping money into a fire. Sure, you can say you did it, but for these addresses just sending it to the address is proof it was burned and then there are plenty of people/programs watching it to then remove the currency from circulation and calculations and stuff.

4

u/mysqlpimp Aug 28 '26

ooh, ooh, how do I set up a "legitimate burn address" ? That sounds like the job for me !

"did you burn that coin?"

"uuuuhhhh.. yep"

7

u/camiteran Aug 28 '26

I know you think you're smart but these transactions are publicly verifiable, that's the whole point of the blockchain stuff. You can see what address X sends to address Y and Z. No personal identifiers except the address itself.

Anyone being fooled by someone lying about this would also be fooled by literally anything, at which point you should try more effective scams than crypto if that's the goal.

That's exactly what he did. He just said at the start of one video "I burned all the dev tokens to prove that I'm serious."

No evidence shown, just that one line. I laughed when I saw it, because that's exactly what someone preparing for a rug pull would say.

1

u/C0rn3j Be the change you want to see in the world Aug 28 '26

I don't understand how you can create a Wallet or send it to a wallet without a key but there being no possible way of creating a key

Something something mathematically impossible for a private key to exist for the used public key.

At least that's how I've seen it explained, I did not verify it myself.

1

u/tribrnl Aug 27 '26

Huh, I didn't know you could see if an address was valid like that.

2

u/jcpham Aug 28 '26

Technically it but be an invalid address publicly with no possibility of a an existing private key to recover it like Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx11111111111111

1

u/Mr_Tiggywinkle Aug 28 '26

Slight correction, Solana has a native Burn function.

It's a direct ledger update. No sending to a digital address at all.

3

u/Verditure0 Aug 27 '26

It showed over a million dollars burned but other commenters were saying that wasn’t real or something

1

u/Ohmec i7 4770k @ 4.4 GHz | EVGA 1080 FTW Aug 28 '26

He couldn't cash in that much. And he had trillions of coins.

16

u/notislant Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

Yeah so heres my question to you.

What makes more sense?

Me providing various wallets for people to donate to, if they so choose.

Or:

'YO GUYS HERE MY BRAND NEW SHITCOIN, OMG LOOK THE CHARTS GOING UP, HOLY SHIT FOMO, FOMO GUYS, LOOK AT THE GAINS!'

aaaand rugpull.

It's very obvious to anyone with the bare minimum intelligence, that this guy was just trying to fleece a bunch of morons. Yet people still defended him lol.

Even someordinarygamers said: "there was a lot of allegations that CyberLak was profiting off of this crypto. And so, I I believe, you know, in his last leak, he said they burned all the developer tokens and he's just working off the trading volume at this point. So if you look at it, you can see that the trading volume was like 25something million. This token has actually went up. There have been because of all of this attention and drama, there are now 30,000 plus bagholders"

There's a saying in the trades: regulations are written with blood. A lot of people don't seem to understand a lot of rules and regulations weren't implemented for no reason.

I personally like untraceable currency and an area of wild west like speculation. Unfortunately everytime we get something risky, fun, and profitable shit gets regulated because idiots get burned.

The amount of cope below my comment is hilarious.

117

u/Chief_White_Halfoat Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

I feel like the definition of grifter is becoming stretched beyond belief if we are just applying it randomly where it doesn't even make sense. Words have actual meanings, and grifter is a useful one. Please let's not apply it to everything.

There is not really a context in which it makes sense to apply it to Rockstar.

43

u/Remarkable-Onion3726 i3-12100 • RX 6600 • 16GB DDR4 • Sleeping Inspiron Aug 27 '26

GTA5 is not covered in glory, the fact that it introduced a monthly paid subscription years after release.

And that subscription includes a discount on the ingame MTX gift cards.

And then they increased the price of the subscription, since apparently tariffs and inflation were interfering with their ability to arbitrarily spawn imaginary cars into peoples' accounts.

6 isn't out yet and we already have the little things like "$20 extra for the complete game, featuring stuff such as haircuts and clothes that were baked on the DVD twenty years ago"

I fully expect GTA6 Online to be brutal, to have monetization schemes that make the most ruthless South Korean gacha look generous.

11

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

Yep, the fanboys don't wanna admit that they're supporting a shitty company, that does shitty things, just because their end product is good.

35

u/Terribletylenol Aug 27 '26

II don't even like GTA and wont be playing the game, but that doesn't change the fact your usage of "grifter" just applies to companies in general, lol.

It's not what the word means.

Grifting isn't merely making money.

Grifting is making money on beliefs you claim to hold but don't.

You're just describing greed.

-5

u/tomtomclubthumb Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

Grifting is making money through deception.

edit: I'm not weighing in on who is grifitng, I'm just defining the word correctly.

8

u/Terribletylenol Aug 27 '26

What have they knowingly lied about that made them their money?

12

u/TheWatersOfMars Aug 27 '26

And they aren't deceiving anyone. Even if you think they're giving you a subpar product, you're not being tricked into paying for that product.

u/boringestnickname Aug 27 '26

-17

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

You've almost got it.

Most companies are grifting. Step back and actually think about it.

14

u/Terribletylenol Aug 27 '26

Nobody ever called that grifting.

You're just using an increasingly common internet term and retroactively expanding it's definition.

Wouldn't be surprised if you also used the term "gaslighting" in a much broader way than it's defined as well.

Once again, "greed" is the word, not "grifting".

-8

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

I got another common internet term for you. "Not mutually exclusive".

u/Helmic RX 7900 XTX | Ryzen 7 9800X3D @ 5.27 GHz Aug 28 '26

Grifter doesn't just mean any company or person who is bad that makes money. A grift implies scamming. Shark cards suck ass, they're predatory, and the shit they monetize is awful, but none of that has anything to do with being a scam. You don't have to scam someone to be shitty.

A pump and dump, on the other hand, is a scam. The guy convinces people that the price will go up and that if they get in on the ground floor they can make a ton of money, or that if they buy this coin he'll possibly leak the game, and then instead he doesn't do that and everyone loses everything through intentional deceit.

There's also the sense of a grifter to who signals particular politcs that they may or may not feel all that sincerely about in order to push a particular product, often fake medical supplements but not necessarily; overpriced merchandise works well if the grifter's relying on lying to get their audience emotionally invested enough in them as a truth-teller to "donate" their money to keep funding their fight for the "truth" of whatever it is they're making shit up about, like many YouTube grifters that constantly tell their audience to get pissed about this new video game that shows a woman whose anus you cannot see in-game because of woke. Or you'll have someone like Andrew Tate who sold kids a "university" to learn to live the life he pretended to live.

If you wanted an example of a video game company you could credibly call grifters, it would probably be Cloud Imperium Games with Star Citizen as it's not at all unreasoanble to suspect they don't actually intend to delvier on any of the many promises they make to pledgers, selling jpegs of ships that don't exist for a game that may never be finished seemingly without the intent to actually implement all that. Even then, that's a bit of a stretch as the intent matters here, as CIG's behavior is entirely explainable by incompetence and endless scope creep as opposed to a deliberate attempt by Chris Roberts to defraud pledgers.

Rockstar doesn't need to be literally grifting to be exploitative, it operates at a much more massive scale and it preys on vulnerable people and it treats its workers like shit.

-11

u/Dylan_Black02 Aug 27 '26

Not in this world. Also definitions of words evolve and we as humans dictate what defines a word.

15

u/Chief_White_Halfoat Aug 27 '26

They certainly evolve, but they can also become meaningless and of no use when applied to everything.

-4

u/destonomos 11700k | 128gb ddr4 | 2TB WD Black | 3060 TI ROG Strix Aug 27 '26

Thats definitely an opinion.

-35

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

You gonna tell me Rockstar isn't grifting?

8

u/space-tech Aug 27 '26

How is Rockstar grifting?

25

u/Chief_White_Halfoat Aug 27 '26

Again do you understand the meaning of the term? A dishonest method/scam used to get money through trickery and deceit?

Sometimes used in the context of say far right wing influencers who don't believe what they say but look to obtain money from followers by aping those beliefs.

Rockstar is going to release an actual massive and in likelihood good game that will make a trillion dollars from people who want to play it. Whatever you feel about them, it doesn't make that grifting.

-9

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

You can release a good product, and still grift the whole way. Grifting doesn't mean you don't deliver the thing.

Cope. Rockstar isn't your friend.

11

u/Chief_White_Halfoat Aug 27 '26

They don't need to be my friend to not be grifting lol. What kind of dumb logic is that. I haven't played GTA V since 2013 when I left it half finished cause the writing sucked (I did enjoy RDR2).

What is the deceit taking place?

-2

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

Selling a product that hasn't been delivered, is a grift. You're extracting money you don't need, from consumers before they've received your product.

9

u/Chief_White_Halfoat Aug 27 '26

I don't think that fits the actual definition. You can dislike it as a practice which is completely reasonable, but gridt involves deceit which is not what's taking place here.

Pre ordering is a common practice (even for buying movie tickets well in advance of release), there's no confusion that you'll be receiving the item immediately. People know how it work.

That's my problem with it really, is that the word becomes meaningless when applied to a business practice you don't like instead of actual grifting.

→ More replies

10

u/WhiteRaven42 Aug 27 '26

.... Developing and selling a game is not grifting. Promoting a product (the game) is not grifting.

Yeah, we're telling you Rockstar are not grifters. And I'm beginning to think you don't know what the word means.

If Rockstar does things you don't like, find a term that fits their sin.

-2

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

Where did I say that the development and release of their game is a grift?

7

u/WhiteRaven42 Aug 27 '26

Nowhere. You never explained ANYTHING about your accusation. I have to guess.

Now that I know you think presails are "dishonest", I know you're just nuts.

10

u/takumidesh Linux Aug 27 '26

Grift: A dishonest way of getting money or property by tricking people through fraud, scams, or confidence games. what is rockstar doing that fits this definition?

-16

u/VagueSomething Aug 27 '26

MTX is a grift.

11

u/Bluemikami i5-13600KF, 9060 XT, 64GB DDR4 Aug 27 '26

No it’s not LOL. They’re being honest with what you’re buying as standalone and what you’re getting with DLCs.

Could it be anti consumer to have dlcs ? Maybe but that is another thing

-3

u/VagueSomething Aug 27 '26

The aggressive MTX in GTA is absolutely not at an acceptable level. Rockstar have made an incredibly predatory system to force players to buy fake currency. They literally cancelled campaigns mode content to release it for extra money in the Online.

-19

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

Preorders for digital games, is 100% a dishonest way of getting money by exploiting consumers' confidence in your business, by getting them to pay for something you haven't delivered yet.

EVERY game company doing preorders is grifting.

9

u/WhiteRaven42 Aug 27 '26

That is not grifting. No one who understand the term would ever call presales a grift.

You just look like a fool. Which is useful, it's nice when people put big labels on themselves so we know to ignore you.

0

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26

Explain how it's not grifting, please.

5

u/WhiteRaven42 Aug 27 '26

.... a customer pays for a product and then gets it. No grift.

Explain how you think it IS grifting? You say preorders of digitals games are dishonest.... huh? How? Do you also not know what honesty is?

Is either side not clear on what's going to happen or is either side not getting what they are paying for? You are making no sense.

You are free to disapprove of pre-sales. You can call them maybe a waste or promote the idea of waiting for a game to be released and people to play it before deicing to buy. Very valid points if you wish to make them.

Calling anyhting about it dishonest... that just makes no sense. Really, the only concclusuon I can make is that YOU are being the dishonest one, saying nonesne you can't possibly believe just to get a rise out of people.

→ More replies

-3

u/IIlIIIlllIIIIIllIlll Aug 27 '26

There is not really a context in which it makes sense to apply it to Rockstar.

A grifter is someone who pulls people into confidence games. A preorderable ultimate edition is definitionally a confidence game. It relies on your certainty that the game will release in the promised state at the promised time, and that the extra features will be equal in value to the price you paid when that's not actually a guarantee.

26

u/Beautiful-Sun8973 Aug 27 '26

Rockstar makes a product and you buy it. You get a tangible product out of it and they aren't tricking you into it.

I don't think you know what a grifter is

-18

u/Kodamacile Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

Rockstar has made over $1bn from consumers for GTA6. Who has received the product?

I don't think you know what a grift is.

How many respectable companies have released an overhyped game in a horrible state, or changed the terms of the sale/subscription/features of the game/monetization after the sale? CDPR & Blizzard are two that come to mind.

How do you know GTA6 won't be an MTX riddled mess at launch?

16

u/TxngledHeadphones Aug 27 '26

Did you even read my comment? Lol.

I ain't mad. I'm just shaking my head at everyone giving money to a rotting carcass. AAA is cooked, and Rockstar deserves everything this leaker does to them. I'm just disappointed they won't actually leak the whole game.

Yes, preordering tech is just as stupid as preordering software. Why is this not common sense. Don't give anyone money before they give you the product you paid for, or you have a contract that holds them legally accountable and financially liable if they don't.

Also, putting a phone on layaway is your personal choice. There is no circumstance where putting a product on layaway is the only way to purchase it.

It hadn't been unheard of - near finished copies of Half-Life 2 and Tears of the Kingdom found their way to the public before release day, as well as the entire plot of The Last of Us 2.

But the longer this guy stretched the drama out, the clearer it became that he either had nothing, or had some bizarre reason that he was never going to release anything.

I guess another Occam's Razor possibility is that whatever he actually snuck out of Rockstar's servers was so minor, it was a few minutes of MP4 footage of early beta testers messing around.

He shot leek onto the wall?

-24

u/seba07 Aug 27 '26

Which is as we know completely impossible to generate using Photoshop, Aftereffects or nowadays generative AI...

all public tools yet nobody else can create similar footage despite knowing how much money they can make from it.

21

u/MadamPardone Aug 27 '26

Ok but how did he write LEEK in the wall. Or do you think he picked his name after he saw them do that?

5

u/OatOat Aug 27 '26

He had access to the game a year ago and recorded himself shooting leek into a wall. He's probably an employee or some kind of internal testing. What's so hard to believe?

2

u/BlackKnighting20 Aug 27 '26

Having pre arranged footage. He has footage pre recorded, feeds people on it, makes a poll on his footage and convinces everyone.

Long play that payoffs.

0

u/East-Ice-3199 Aug 27 '26

That has nothing to do with his question.

0

u/grapejuicesushi Aug 27 '26

wouldn't Occam's razor just be that this was rockstar all along?

No…that’s literally the most convoluted reasoning.

Rockstar cooking up a crypto scam or some guy leaking shit and plastering his shitcoin address as a watermark.

Fair, but I do think this scandal skirts close enough to actual laws were broken that a PR team would have been too wary to invent him. In fact I would have suspected Rockstar more if there were no crypto scam involved, just the "mystery man with exciting viral footage that shows nothing"

2

u/Void008380 Aug 27 '26

There's no way rockstar would ever do this

It makes them look like morons, there's not really any upside at all

-1

u/grapejuicesushi Aug 27 '26

interesting. i would’ve done the exact opposite cause the crypto thing makes it real but you’re right, the crypto thing is too risky for rockstar to do. if this ever had the chance to see the light of the day then rockstar would be in the dirt.

2

u/LucidNonsense211 Aug 27 '26

“Would have had you convinced” is some wild phraseology. Like yeah, you and I weren’t convinced, but everyone was!

1

u/DisgustinglySober PC Master Race Aug 27 '26

I think he now has

1

u/shawntw77 Aug 27 '26

I dont think anyone was dumb enough to expect the full game. A build sure but a development build maybe but even then thats not the full game.

1

u/lernwasdraus Aug 27 '26

Reddit would have you believe he is a working class hero.

1

u/HurryOne 9950X3D | Suprim 5090 Aug 27 '26

This subreddit would have you believe this game was going to flop

1

u/TwistingFirmament Aug 28 '26

Even if he does, you'll be mental if he doesn't try to sneak in some back door or some other malware in the program.

Track record: -Infilitrates a major tech company and steals an early build -sets up a rug pull shit coin to exploit 'supporters'

1

u/TheChosenMuck Aug 28 '26

This subreddit would have had you convinced he was going to be releasing the whole game though.

i still think it was some guerilla marketing from Rockstar they are the company that first started to use outrage to sell their game

1

u/Markus4781 Aug 28 '26

I thought he burned 1mil worth of shitcoin?

1

u/ArthurAI_QC Aug 28 '26

he would NEVER leak the whole game, cause he never had it. he just found a build version, not the entire game, and its litteraly impossible to download 150-200 Go from a server and no one see's it.

-3

u/Turnbob73 Aug 27 '26

There was literally zero indication that he had a build on hand and everyone here absolutely ran with that theory. Tbh, it’s kinda hilarious watching a bunch of terminally online Redditors get played like a goddamn fiddle by an asshole.

10

u/SuperCyka Aug 27 '26

He shot his name onto the wall. That’s a pretty good indication.

1

u/BlackKnighting20 Aug 27 '26

That could have been pre recorded footage.

-2

u/Turnbob73 Aug 27 '26

So that’s definitive proof? And he couldn’t have either just recorded at the time that he had access or had an insider record curated clips for him? All of the clips are spliced together like he’s just pulling from a file of videos instead of having the build on hand.

1

u/_MrBond_ Aug 27 '26

Did you even the see the leaked videos or are you talking out of your ass?

1

u/Turnbob73 Aug 27 '26

Did you? All of the clips were spliced together like he only had a collection of pre-recorded clips; every time people asked him for specifics, he either vaguely avoided the question or asked for an obscene amount of money for a curated clip; and he repeatedly said “I can show Lucia prologue footage” as if he didn’t have access to a build at the time to show more Lucia gameplay.

But sure let’s circlejerk baseless assumptions like “oh he has the build and is going to take down rockstar for us!”

1

u/BlackKnighting20 Aug 27 '26

You’re in PCMR, people here are in full denial. Mfs thought they could play GTA VI before consoles, lol.

Lmao pretty impressive to have a 13 year old bot with an unhidden post history. That’s a damn convincing bot

2

u/alfooboboao Aug 27 '26

guy who keeps commenting “rockstar bot”

-7

u/ExILoveEmiliaAndRem Aug 27 '26

It's simply people who have made up their minds to hate on the game years ago based on their favorite grifter youtuber's talking points. Morons will be morons.

0

u/DonaldTheWall Aug 27 '26

I'm not coping, I could honestly careless

There are 3 things I can think of

1 he was always a R* employee and it was part of their AR marketing that they used to do in the past

2 He's still releasing it just wanted to make as much as possible

3 He didn't think people would be that stupid and decided that they made enough and will disappear
