Ruined by Technology This viral post about enshittification is fake
Why do people keep falling for this?

Welcome to the dead internet! Where everybody can be a BOT and most content probably is fake or designed especially to make you react!
56
u/Forsaken-Builder-312 15h ago
That's exactly what a bot would say....
12
u/sundayflow 13h ago
Maybe I am a bot, maybe you are a bot, maybe we are all just bots in some weird alien hive mind construction. Who knows.

Gladly!
...what the fuck is francrsinia? No really, I haven't heard of it at all in my life.
11
u/Dinevir 14h ago
To make other bots react.
1
u/foomatic999 10h ago
Unbelievable! They now generate pictures just to post them on reddit and farm clout.
My user would be furious if I told him.
6
u/TaleOfDash 12h ago
And worst of all, the bot could be any one of us. It could be in this very room! It could be you! It could be me! It could even be…
210
u/HedgehogElection 16h ago
Because they want to believe this.

u/Teh_Hunterer 13h ago
The top 2 is a real thing, I remember getting the shitty dark green army men in the 90s and being super disappointed with how shit they are compared with the light green ones but it made a different faction for my old ones to fight against so not all bad
48
u/makeybussines 10h ago
I thought this was real, and the reason is personal experience with toy cars, which are less detailed, non-transparent windows, more plastic and fewer components "on average" in the ones from my dads box of cars compared to the ones my kid has.
13
u/No-Lunch4249 9h ago edited 7h ago
Honestly yeah I remember as a kid I had a bucket of these army men, half were my dad's from his childhood and were all WW2 styles, half were from the 90s and were Vietnam styled. Definitely noticeable difference in quality to me between the two armies, noticable even as a kid.
That doesn't preclude differences in brand or anything, but kids toys have been getting enshittified for a lot longer than other stuff
2
17
u/Ashamed-Material-377 15h ago
Yeah cause when did the M16 garand exist?
4
u/Davenator_98 14h ago
It being made in 1968 (if that's real, that is), makes me think about how maybe it was originally designed to resemble an M1 or M14, but got a last-minute change to the AR-15 front sight because that was such a standout from the old design.
2
u/Nyther53 10h ago
Fuck, I remember looking at the rifle and thinking it looked odd, but that didn't register.
I just shrugged and moved on.

u/Tiny_Leopard_8819 15h ago
Fake post, but enshitification is true
15
u/iengleba 15h ago
Yeah, but the timeline is way off. They started looking like the 2026 one in the ‘90s

You can go to https://synthid.com/, sign in and then directly upload any image you want

Why am I supposed to give a shit about the army men in the first place? They were always wobbly/messed up in some way.
19
47
u/Visual_Bridge6925 12h ago
Why do people keep falling for this?
Oh idk, because the exact same phenomenon is real when it comes to hotwheels cars? People keep "falling for this" because it's believable. I don't know what to tell you guys, but there's really nothing about that picture that screams "FAKE! AI AI AI!!!"
10
u/whereismymind86 11h ago
the phenomenon is real, but that doesn't change the fact that the photo itself is very obviously fake.
22
u/Visual_Bridge6925 11h ago
Please point out the part about it that is "very obviously fake," because I would say it's not obvious. And if your answer hinges on knowing for a fact that the toys from the 60s were not that detailed, then that's not obvious as I am not 70 years old.

But hotwheel card did lose that bottom details. Of course not all of them, but a lot did
8
u/Super_Noob_700 10h ago
Does it really matter tho? The price of single car has stayed the same for over 20 years. And I doubt many kids are going to care. They just want to play with their cars, not stare at the bottom all day.
3
u/EricIsEric 9h ago
I buy more Hot Wheels than a normal adult should (impulse buy because they are ~$1.25 after tax) and the vast majority of the ones I've bought in the last few years that are based on real world cars/movie cars have detailed bottoms. I'd say all, as I genuinely don't remember any not being detailed on the bottom, but it's possible there is 1 or 2 that didn't.
2
7
u/Pikminer5087 11h ago
Hell, I have old castings from the 90s with like zero undercarriage detail! Ironically removing detail would cost more since that would be a brand new mold.
1
u/mrbobcyndaquil 10h ago
Because the people faking it with GenAI are paid by the enshittification forces to do so.
•
u/ilovestoride 25m ago
Would that in theory be the most realistic? Almost all cars have smooth bottoms now for aerodynamics.
1
u/Visual_Bridge6925 11h ago
Yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Again, I am not defending the AI, but I think it's pretty dumb to ask "why do people fall for this" when I can so easily bring up another example of the exact same phenomenon that is real.
Be mad at whoever made it, but there's no need to be shitty to people who fall for it when it's pretty mundane and believable like this post is.
11
0
u/Somthingaboutcats 11h ago
it screams ai when you just... look at it, its a sixth sense you have to have
37
u/TalkersCZ 15h ago
It could be very well true. (EDIT: I know this specific one is not true, but the point is different)
And I am pretty sure you can find on Alibaba or some similar chinese site tons of products, which are terrible quality.
The thing is, that today you have options in different price ranges.
You can buy a pan for 10USD. You can buy pan for 100s USD.
But you cant expect 10USD pan to be same quality as a pan, that costed 10USD 50 years ago.
Same thing with these soldiers. If you buy 3D printed plastic knockoffs from cheap plastic from China, you cant expect it to be same quality as those before.
18
u/Minmax-the-Barbarian 15h ago
I feel like 3D printed solid plastic toys would be much more expensive than traditional molded ones, regardless of quality.
Sorry, that's not to detract from your comment. Very "um actually" of me ☝️🤓
20
u/edingerc 15h ago
Yep, injection molding on small items is the same way they make plastic forks and such. 3d printing is a much more expensive process.
8
u/nothing_in_my_mind 15h ago edited 15h ago
Yeah, I guess you can't expect everyone to know about production processes.
3D printing is a very expensive method per unit. It makes sense if you are going to be producing a few units.
Those cheapo toys are injection molded. But hold up, expensive toys (like those Warhammer figures, or Lego) are also injection molded. The difference is poorer quality molds, poorer quality plastic, poor design choices, using molds after they have gone through wear and tear, poor quality control after production.
3
u/fruitybix 12h ago
In the case of those army men its either getting their hands on ancient worn out moulds, or taking a selection of existing plastic army men and using them to make new moulds as cheaply as possible.
Making injection moulds is a very big up front cost.
1
1
u/TalkersCZ 13h ago
No idea how they were produced, s thanks for correction there. 😄
But simply put - you will have cheap mold in China producing it with cheap plastic and with underpaid workforce.
Thats kind of the point. 😄
13
u/Shienvien 15h ago
The bigger problem is trying to find out if the $100 pan is $100 because it's better, or because the markup is 19x higher than on the $10 pan.
10
8
u/0b0011 13h ago
I remember watching a video a while back with this same conclusion. They were testing tools from the 70s and tools today. They looked at a crescent wrench from back then and 2 from today. I cant remember the exact numbers but essentially they had one back in the day and it was $20. Now they have 2 options the $20 one and the $100 wrench. The $20 one was obviously shitty and had a big margin of error as well as slippage where as the $100 one was actually better than the old one. It was the same story for all of the tools they tested. The thing is tools used to be way more expensive back in the day because that old $20 wrench would cost the equivalent of $160 in today's money. It is absolutely true that quality is dropping for many things but for many other things they've just added in a bare minimum cheap option and people compare that to the old thing rather than comparing the expensive one.
7
u/TalkersCZ 13h ago
In mind of the people something that costed 30 years ago 20 bucks should still cost 20 bucks.
They find 20 bucks cheap version and they complain about quality.
I went for a hike. Nothing crazy. Forgot my tent. Got one for 30 bucks, was perfectly fine. Probably will detiorate very fast, but that is kinda expected.
2
u/RankedFarting 14h ago
The presses used to make these figurines are still the same and the constant wear and tear has lead to a loss in detail.
Its possible that the chinese producers bought old presses from other countries that have been worn down.
0
u/EveningAnt3949 14h ago
I think this is misleading.
Making a decent mono-colored toy that's solid plastic is really easy and cheap. There is no reason for bad plastic toys to exist. And back in the day it made no sense to sell cheap knock-off because the originals were inexpensive.
To be fair, making a mold for a detailed figure costs money, I can see a high price for niche collector items. But a big part of the high costs is that factories have moved to overkill solutions for making plastic toys, That's because many factories have removed human designers and operators.
(3D printing for large volumes is fat more expensive by the way.)
5
58
u/Fantastic-Run-4490 16h ago edited 15h ago
There are real examples however, just look at the underside of matchbox cars over the years, they get less detailed as it goes on.
EDIT: I might be wrong on this, I do actually go to vintage toys fairs and boot sales and thought I was seeing a pattern but to honest I don't collect them and therefore don't know enough to say for sure that all the new lines are less detailed, so will admit I could be wrong.
65
u/Mauzersmash0815 16h ago
The matchbox/hotwheels example is just as fake... i used to collect them and its just casting specific. Even new cars/molds features bottom details. Some older ones barely any. Also many new cars, especially EVs are simply more flat on the bottom
16
u/Busy-Ratchet-8521 15h ago
This has been discussed before. For the most part, they're still replicating what the undersides look like. Which nowadays is flat, because it's more aerodynamic.
31
u/dannylopuz 16h ago
I hope you don't mean the other viral AI post showing the underside of toy cars...
17
u/baked_tea 16h ago
The pics are from time before ai generated images
10
u/Fearless-Sea996 15h ago
Yup and its manipulative as well necause they mixed different types of hotwheels and more modern cars do have full flat floor for better aerodynamics
2
5
u/Fantastic-Run-4490 16h ago
No I mean in general, look at some real ones, there is an AI post, but you can see it IRL.

Even if that post is fake, you do agree the concept of "enshittification" is real and exists across different products and services in the current age right?
49
u/ZookeepergameIll1399 15h ago
People posting AI slop to farm karma are enshittificating the internet
3
u/Mr_Tottles 15h ago
Lol enshittificating.
And yes they are. Can we go back before harambe please?
2
37
u/dannylopuz 16h ago
Enshittification is real, which makes this ai slop even more infuriating.
28
2
u/oxyscotty 14h ago
You ask why people keep falling for stuff like this, you do then understand why?
1
u/stopmyhamster 11h ago
Is this actually an example of enshittification though? because I always just figured that is specifically with one company over overtime making their product shittier I’d imagine these are all different companies that have made this over the years.
1
u/FocusPerspective 10h ago
But a plastic toy produced by hundreds of makers across a dozen counties for a hundred years is not an example of enshitification, not even close.
So maybe people are pushing back because they are turfed of Reddit learning a new word and using it incorrectly.

You're conflating two different things. The generic "AI detectors" are what are garbage and misreport all the time.
That's not what this is. Anything made by the main modern AI models like ChatGPT have a hidden design in them which can be read back by their own identification system (SynthID). These ARE 100% accurate as they are just reading back the embedded code. The only catch is that they will also flag if the same AI model was used to upscale them, but that's less likely to be an issue in these cases.

3
u/craglin_orogen 11h ago
The funny thing is, the uncovering of the meme has become the meme. AI is just the next stage of enshitification.
3
7
u/Eena-Rin Why Do They Let Me Make These Myself??? 8h ago
Bruh, ai or not they've got a point. They used to be made of tin, the materials and details have declined. For another such example Google hot wheels undercarriage details
6
u/MrBoo843 6h ago
And they used to have lead mixed with the tin. There's a reason we don't use that anymore
→ More replies (1)0
u/mardegrises 4h ago
Because we decided, as a society, than microplastics are more efficient than lead.
3
0
u/HarryFookinKing 3h ago
Even the old plastic ones were on fucking point. Nowadays they look like a barbapapa fucked a jar of playdough and birthed an amalgamation of equal parts horror and regret.
4
u/RankedFarting 14h ago
Maybe its fake but this is a real phenomenon just not from enshittification but because they still use the same presses as they used to back then. Interest in these figurines has gone down so i guess it wasnt worth it to remake them. The loss in detail is from wear and tear.
2
2
u/xpltvdeleted 10h ago
As others will tell you, it's clearly "fake" anyway, because they've used AI to basically line them up perfectly and present it the way they have.
That doesn't mean it's not true in terms of the reduced detail, but it's worth researching yourself.
2
u/MarvinManyracks 7h ago
It’s weird that they decided to make up an example when there’s so many real ones

I mean the community would be better if synth id or something similar was integrated into Reddit to identify AI slop...
7
u/scrufflor_d this is PURPLE. if you see a cyan ur stupid 16h ago
do you have any alternative ways to detect synthid
8
u/WalrusEmperor1 16h ago
I'm assuming they think this "detector" is just another AI that's guessing if the image was AI (which isn't the case with SynthID, it's an invisible watermark left behind by the AI used to generate the media that's baked into the generated media for the sole purpose of identifying if the media was made or modified using AI)
4
u/scrufflor_d this is PURPLE. if you see a cyan ur stupid 16h ago
ive had someone genuinely tell me that a synthid detection is unreliable. like the watermark could like accidentally be put on an image or something. they would not listen to anyone trying to explain what synthid is
2
u/Frederyk_Strife4217 15h ago
I mean I've seen people claim that images made before generative ai had synthid
1
u/edscoble 16h ago
Reddit is one by AI training ground, why do you think there’s a massive AI subreddit?
2
u/bob_nugget_the_3rd 15h ago
It's actually a good measure when you think about it, hear me out.
Back in 68 the people who made things for the boomer generation made it to a standard, so they got the best toys etc, but as the boomer grow up and took over they cut corners and cheapend to maximise profits. And end up in 2026 where everything's a mess
What I'm trying to say is they are the ones saying things were better back then but are the ones guiding the ship
1
u/Malcolm337CZ 15h ago
I mean even as a kid I remember having some older army man little figure and one time my parents bought me full set where there was a new mold of this old guy and he was so thin and shitty compared to the old one
1
1
u/Choice-Wolverine-493 15h ago
This rubbish is all over ig.
Stupid AI generated posts and statements that bot accounts are using to get boomers to engage so they can sell the account when it hits x amount of followers.
1
u/Real_Avdima 15h ago
The first soldier is what could be but isn't, unless you buy figures for dioramas etc. Toys are these shitty, flat (like, wtf are they so flat?) models that I just hate.
Second is what I generally remember them looking like in my childhood. The third is how they looked after unpacking, because the plastic was so bad.
The issue is material. In the past it wasn't good, now it can be good but that's not cost efficient.
1
u/Zealousideal-Bad4679 14h ago
Kind of unrelated but when I was younger I saw people playing a FPS game with these army men as characters and I thought it was the coolest shit ever
1
u/Vast-Airline-6674 14h ago
They could have only used it for something like editing. I would still assume it's fake though, given the state of the Internet right now.

I immediately knew after seeing it for the first time, that it wad likely AI generated
1
1
u/pontantos 10h ago
Definitely AI but this wouldn’t really be about enshittification at all. If they’re using the same mold to create millions of army men since the 60s then that mold is going to degrade and the plastic is going to look shittier
Or, if people make knockoffs from the same mold it’s going to end up lower quality either way

1
u/Citizen_Empire 15h ago
To be fair... the fact that it uses AI is still showing the point of "enshitification" since AI has been seen as that just the same... so, "task failed successfully"?
1
u/RaDeus 15h ago
Hypothetically that could show how an injection mold wears out over time.
It's only the barrel sagging that looks edited to me.
2
2
u/DependentRow8281 12h ago
The solider detail is there on all images but it has just been made fuzzy by the AI. Basically the same apart from the barrel
1
1
0
u/WM_ 14h ago
Well, some AI detectors claimed that the declaration of independance was written with AI.
13
u/notcharldeon 14h ago
SynthID works differently. SynthID detection doesn't look at the details on the image itself but instead detects a hidden watermark ingrained faintly into the image intentionally added by the image generator. The best analogy I can think of is like adding a faint QR code into the image and making something that can scan very faint QR codes
7
8
u/theproblemdoctor 14h ago
SynthID is very different. It looks for specific patterns added by open ai (in this case)
The chance a normal image that wasn't touched by ai contains a synthID watermark is so low it's basically zero
4
u/dannylopuz 13h ago
Oh well then all AI posts must be real then!

u/Havengul_Undying 13h ago edited 8h ago
Wrong direction of logic. The obvious conclusion is that its all been AI all along and we're living in a simulation
-2
u/ghccych 16h ago
Still could be a real photo just ran through an Ai for editing and shit
5
u/Orca_Alt_Account 15h ago
The top model physically couldn't look like that without painting/washing. Plastic army men like these have never usually been pre-washed because it'd drive the price way up.
1
u/dannylopuz 16h ago
Show me more photos of the "2026" model. You can't because it doesn't exist.
The post is based on a 1960s German Soldier toy that someone asked AI to "enshittificy"
8
2
u/InvestigatorJosephus 16h ago
I mean there's plenty of examples. Tech is one. Nowadays a lot of stuff is built to last for one or two years and then basically disintegrate.
-2
u/Putrid-VII 12h ago
SO the issue here is that the AI detection services are incredibly inaccurate. At this point, unless it is very obvious, we are in a position where we are bent over on our knees and they can pretty much do whatever they want. Shit's fucked, yo
6
u/HerotaleCreator 12h ago
SynthID is different. It detects OpenAI/Gemini watermarks. 100% definitive proof
1
-3
u/Putrid-VII 11h ago
And if there is no watermark present? And if the image has been edited and copied to remove metadata? Still 100%?
4
u/davidemo89 9h ago
No, synthid is not inside the meta data and you can also compress, modify it but synthid is still there

1
u/Pierose 5h ago

-1
u/StaticSystemShock 13h ago
Why do people look at this shit and somehow still manage to miss the message by obsessing over some irrelevant detail? The fact that everything is getting enshitified is not a new thing. And we all know it's just getting worse. This may be an exaggerated example made with image manipulation, but in general I've seen this irl. Those soldiers in 1968 probably came in a box each in its individual compartment in the box, because plastics were a novelty and they really put more effort into making them. Now they just stamp these in millions of pieces cheaply in China and dump them in a cheap bag and off it goes on the shelves. That's the message.
Also, just because something has Ai marking, no one knows what was the actual manipulation. Was it just cropped, was it just added text, are all the images made up, which is it?
3
3
u/TacoDoc2 13h ago
So why did they have to make shit up? Sure things are going to shit. But hey use ai to make some lies.
0
u/Aggressive-Card5017 16h ago
Cause real enshittification is everywhere. The pic might be fake, but I just have to go to the store to see it for real.
0
u/Ailyx 12h ago
Synth ID detects if the image has gone through AI, it does not detect if what it shows is true or not.
→ More replies (4)

u/ficklampa 9h ago
Might as well have been real, I mean using the same mold for injection molding for 58 years would have the same result as the picture, if not even worse - depending on how much use it'd get.

u/Squeaky_Ben 8h ago
I thought it was on purpose?
Like, everything uses AI in 2026, even the toy soldiers?

u/veryblocky 15h ago
Social media platforms should be required to detect the watermark and display largely that an image was made with AI
