It also helps you get your drinks faster when we are busy

Thats mad.

In the UK people will make an effort to be served in the order they arrived at the bar. If a bartender asks for your order but you know someone was there before you, most people tell the bartender to serve the other person first.

Tipping to skip the queue would be seen as really rude/crass

I mean, they have no idea if you're going to tip up front. You can however give a decent sized tip after the first drink, with cash. They'll likely remember you and will prioritize you in the future if it's crowded.

Also, if bar is very busy, it helps to get served quicker if you stand there, actively try to make eye-contact, and be visibly holding (not waving like a jerk) cash.

Worked in bars for years in the UK. People here just have manners. People get served at the bar in order (sometimes someone getting a big round will let people getting 1 or 2 drinks go before them).

American attitudes to this just seem really rude.

People typically get served in order here too. This was specific for if its pretty crowded. Kinda like this type of situation.

If it's less busy your tip isn't going to help. You just walk up and wait for the people that were there before.

Yes, that is the situation I am describing. In the UK people still do this and bar tenders arent impressed by tips or seeing cash.
