Research / Info 💡 What "junk fees" have you seen?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at revamping our wiki and one of the things I thought might be of some use is to catalogue all the different "junk fees" we're starting to see, so people can be aware to look out for them.

Those who care to respond, please could you answer:

1] What was the fee entitled?

2] Where was it disclosed? (Just on the receipt? Small print at the bottom of the menu? Sign on the door? Website?)

3] Approximately when did you see this? (if you remember - it could be useful to chart the "rollout" of different things!)

Takeout 🥡 Someone tried to scam me

Went to Steak and Shake yesterday. Paid with card plenty of times before. Card reader asks for a tip, then they hand you the receipt to sign that also has a tip line. They also have a tip bucket on the counter. I'm used to it, but no one has ever commented before about my lack of a tip.

But yesterday the girl working the counter tried to scam me. It prints two receipts, the long one I sign and shorter one that's my copy. The girl hands me the shorter one and covers the other one with her hand but never presented it to me. So I called her out "you going to let me sign that?" She then crumbled it up and put her hand behind her back. I had to demand again she let me sign the receipt.

She finally came it to me and I do like I always do. A bit fat obvious 0 in the tip line and I write No Tip above my signature. It was like she was trying to hide it so she could put whatever she wanted on it. After I signed it she put it with all the other receipts I could easily see behind the counter from other card transactions.

Before anyone asks, this location has no manager to ask for. It's an odd location. Its inside a not very busy local casino. So the reaturant gets very little traffic. There has never been more than 2 people working at one time, one on the register and one on the grill, and never a manager that I've seen. The location also doesn't appear on the official website when searching for locations. But it has all the official branding and limited promotion items so it is legit. Just odd.

Ride Share / Food Delivery 🚗 Apparently critical thinking is optional, but tipping isn't.

I was reading on another sub about a customer posting that they ordered food and somehow, despite choosing the correct address, the driver still delivered to the wrong location. It's unclear if the OP chose the wrong address or the app glitched but what’s baffling about this situation is how many people are defending the driver while completely ignoring the actual problem.

OP said they were confident they selected the correct address. Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t. But even if OP made a mistake, how does that excuse delivering food to a clearly closed business, leaving it on the ground, and driving away without contacting the customer or support? There was even a PIN involved. What exactly is the point of requiring a PIN if drivers can apparently ignore it and leave the food wherever they please?

Instead of acknowledging that the driver could have used some common sense and taken a moment to resolve the situation, people are getting hung up on whether OP selected the right address and whether they tipped enough. Some are even getting angry at the mere suggestion that the driver handled this poorly.

Apparently, tipping is supposed to prevent bad deliveries, but basic problem-solving is optional. The customer’s experience gets brushed aside, the PIN gets treated like a suggestion, and the driver’s decision to abandon the order without attempting to resolve the issue somehow becomes the customer’s fault.

OP’s tipping decision is irrelevant to the fundamental issue here. We don’t even know whether they tipped upfront, and it wouldn’t change what the driver should have done when faced with an obviously questionable delivery location.

A tip doesn’t magically make a closed business open, and it doesn’t replace common sense. If a delivery location looks wrong, the business is closed, and a PIN is required, the reasonable response is to contact the customer or support and figure out what’s happening. Leaving the food on the ground and disappearing shouldn’t be defended as acceptable service, regardless of the tip.

Rant 📢 Was I in the wrong?

• Upvotes

Just got a massage at a reflexology spa and the ladies reaction has been bothering me for like the last hour.

Basically I went in and got a 60 minute massage, I visit about once a month. I go there often. Today my reward card was maxed out for this spa so I got a discount at checkout.

So basically the total came out to about $36 and normally I’m pretty generous with my tips but I gave her $8. She looked at the screen as I’m typing and says , “8?” And then smiles and scoffs. As if she is questioning why so little? Idk , she lowkey seemed to be in some mood from when I walked in initially so I didn’t want to tip her too generously. Plus 8 is over 20 percent.

Basically it really pissed me off and I’m never going back. I guess I could have tipped a little more, but was this really that bad? $8??

Research / Info 💡 I just had an epiphany!

I am currently in Japan, where tipping is not expected (even frowned upon) and the use of credit/debit cards is not as widespread as in the US. I think I had a realization this morning. Do you remember, back before COVID, when we still used cash to pay for coffee, McDonald's, Taco Belle, etc? There wasn't a tip screen! But then we were convinced our dirty, virus-laden money had to be replaced with plastic, and we started using our cards for the smallest purchases. And tip screens suddenly became prevalent! Did we inadvertently do this to ourselves? I still find myself using a card when, previously, I would have used cash. Thoughts?

Rant 📢 Automatic Car Wash

Stopped by the automatic car wash this afternoon. The guy at the machine does his spill for the monthly subscription. Then ask if I want to leave a tip? A tip for what? You selected the wash I wanted then tapped my card.

Counter Service 🛎️ Tip Prompt at Love Field Chick-Fil-A

I just got an egg biscuit and was prompted to leave a tip. I never hit “no” so fast. I can’t imagine how much extra money the managers get from people who are willfully overpaying for their food.

Tip Creep 🫙 Bicycle shop?

I went into a bicycle shop tonight to buy a mountain bike. I sat on the bike to make sure it was the right size. I said I'll take it, it was $3,200 and when I put my debit card in it asked for a tip....

Why the hell would I be tipping the dude behind the counter at a bicycle store? The guy selling me the bike definitely acted disappointed when I hit no tip.

So we tip people now for doing their job and or doing it professionally with a smile, warrants a tip these days??? That’s gonna be a no from me, dawg

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Finally happened to me

We don't eat it often but had the chance to take my wife out for a nice meal and took it. Everything was overpriced but it was good and what isn't overpriced nowadays. Came time for the check and suggested tip started at 30%. Waitress wasn't bad but wasn't active and beyond either. I feel like $15 for her coming to our table 5 times was more than generous, yet that was half of the minimum suggested amount. I miss living in Korea where tipping isn't a thing.

Edit:

I should have stated earlier too that I got $100 off our bill thanks to a resy credit which is why I still tipped what I thought was a generous amount. Pay it forward a little if you will. Everything all together was $30 for me in the long run, half of that being the tip.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Apparently you're supposed to tip at escape rooms now because "it isn't customary not to tip in the United States"

Post image
903 Upvotes

From https://escapetheroom.com/blog/is-it-customary-to-tip-the-hosts-at-escape-rooms/

They're claiming it's "customary" to tip at escape rooms, because people are doing their jobs and apparently you're supposed to tip everyone you interact with for anything. Are they shamelessly trying to scam tourists, or is tip culture in the US really this bad? (I haven't been to the US in a while!)

Tipping Culture ✖️ So because he doesn't tip you what you think to be inappropriate amount, you screenshot the receipt and his LinkedIn profile in a service group for the city? As seen on Facebook

I find this mind-boggling as a former server. There have been many occasions when someone tipped me less than I expected. However, I never considered looking them up, taking a screenshot of their Linkedin profile, and posting it in a Facebook group for the service industry in my city.

And I had a rapper come to the pool bar where I worked in its inaugural year (with a whole entourage running up a $950 tab) and they left $50. Still never thought to do anything like this.

Research / Info 💡 Donations at ✔️ Checkout

This craze of asking for donations at checkout is adjacent to our conversations of ending tipping; it is the same concept. Thanks to this subreddit, I've developed a backbone to say, "No, thank you," to this onerous request.

Also, this group educated me that retailers use these consumer donations as a tax write off which this WSJ article fails to mention.

Counter Service 🛎️ “No tip” button disabled on payment screen

4.3k Upvotes

Well, I’ve seen it posted here and now it finally happened to me. Was at an outdoor movie night, took my kid and a buddy. Walked up to get the kids ice cream at one of the food trucks parked at the event, it’s in St Louis, it’s called Fire and Ice cream truck. I ordered two cups of ice cream, as I get them I hand them over to the kids who immediately open them. I then start going through the payment screens, I get to the tip one. I click the “No Tip”, once, twice, nothing happens. At the second time I did a quick glance up at the lady tending and she did a little smirk. I realized the scam then, I at least was able to get to the custom tip and put in zero dollars. Honestly if the kids hadn’t been totally crazy and started wolfing down their treats the second I gave it to them I would’ve returned the items and left. Absolutely crazy to have to tip at a food truck with prepackaged ice cream!

Rant 📢 At a Corn Maze????

Seriously...

Went to a cider mill (hey, we're in Michigan... it's what we do in October) with the family. It was a fairly spread out property, so there was a shack outside the maze where you paid for your tickets. Sitting on the sill of the window, they had posted a tip jar.

Like what I tipping you for? Taking my money and giving me a receipt?

Rant 📢 Spectrum center concert, charlotte NC

Went to concert there yesterday, at concession stands I picked out my drinks and snacks from the cooler. Placed them on a scanner table that scanned and totaled them on the screen and paid, display asked for a tip amount. The attendant just stood there to make sure all items were scanned. 17.00 beers and a 14.00 pizza the size of a small saucer.... and they wanted a tip...sheesh

Ramen Wakusei in Sunnyvale, CA

I saw the menu prices and was wondering why it’s so expensive. I didn’t realize until I was paying that there was no tipping screen on the POS machine. Then I saw the ”No tipping” on the menu when I searched on Google afterwards.
(Menu photo is from Google review.)

The service was pretty fast and water was filled without having to ask.
