Sad day to be a Mass Effect fan

•

u/DwP820 7h ago

Between the Pokemon bank shutdown, Halo moving to activision, and BioWare closing, this meme has encapsulated me for the last 2 months

•

u/Shootzilla 7h ago

I'm fine with Halo moving to Activision. Halo studios had their chance multiple times and there are plenty of super talented FPS devs at Activision that are just waiting to get off COD support duty.

•

u/Eurehetemec N7 6h ago

Honestly the best thing now would be if the sheer greed/desperation at EA from the huge debt the Saudis and Kushner forced on them leads to them actually selling off or licencing out IPs, something EA has historically been extremely averse to doing (for no clear reason). So in a sense Halo going to Activision is similar to the best case here now. Some other studio buying or licencing ME.

•

u/dotnetmonke 6h ago

Wish granted, Ubisoft buys Mass Effect IP.

•

u/pm_me_cursed_images_ 6h ago

Ubisoft at least is making games, the bar is in hell

•

u/Mitologist 2h ago

Ubisoft sells the idea of games in the form of half baked demos

•

u/A_Dozen_Lemmings 4h ago

Frankly, apart from monetization bullshit. Ubisoft does put out solid products.

Outlaws is a genuinely great game.

•

u/Sumrise 4h ago

Yeah, Ubi is rarely amazing nowadays, but their bigger game are at worts "all right".

Tis' not amazing, but it's competent.

•

u/Impressive-Session31 2h ago

Outlaw's was great and it failing only means more slop! I fear for humanity in the long run and my hobby in the short term 😂

•

u/Salt-Mushroom3104 3h ago

L take, outlaws was boring and buggy.

•

u/A_Dozen_Lemmings 2h ago

L take, Outlaws is a fucking gem.

•

u/Salt-Mushroom3104 2h ago

To each their own, but Im genuinely am baffled some people liked that game. I do quite like the jedi survivor games though

•

u/Eurehetemec N7 5h ago

Eh. Could be worse. The real monkey's paw would be a company buying it who would never actually use it and/or never actually put out a narrative game. I'd honestly prefer Ubisoft buy it to say, Paradox.

If the paw doesn't curl, maybe CDPR can buy it though.

•

u/bananas_and_papayas 5h ago

Imagine a Mass Effect Paradox strategy game... licensed version of Stellaris?

•

u/Moist-Relationship49 1h ago

They tried with star trek and it was a disaster.

•

u/alejeron 1h ago

or Owlcat or Larian. honestly, a turn based CRPG Mass Effect could be a ton of fun

•

u/Userlame19 6h ago

They'd do better at least

•

u/UrdnotZigrin 5h ago

Damn you monkey paw!

•

u/MaltySines 3h ago

Ubisoft isn't in a position to be buying anything.

•

u/LordDeath86 2h ago

You have to climb a mountain with the Mako on every planet to reveal the points of interest on the map. Each POI is one of 12 gameplay activities copied thousands of times across the solar system. World exploration follows a fixed order because enemy levels gate your progression through accessible areas. Gameplay at the start is the same as in the late game, just with higher damage numbers. Story missions mostly involve the main character being drugged while you hold down the move-forward button and let the level designers go wild with their latest tunnel-of-horror ride.

•

u/CaleanKnight 6h ago

Sure... name a Studio that would actually have the time and the talent to pull it off though and not fumble "their first game" in the franchise because "they need to find their stride"...

•

u/Epic-soup 6h ago

Maybe Larian but I doubt they get the combat right.

•

u/CaleanKnight 5h ago

I am not sure Larian would want to work on another huge Legacy IP with questionable Owners. Hasbro has salted that field quite well apparently.

•

u/Eurehetemec N7 5h ago edited 5h ago

I don't know - loads of studios come out of the gate strong. Bit Reactor had never made a game together before they made Zero Company, to give a recent example. I think the best bet would be a new studio formed explicitly to do this, if you really want to succeed.

The real issue isn't that it couldn't be done, it's that it would need to be a sale rather than a licencing to attract top talent. And EA are more likely to want to licence. If we do see more ME games I would bet on something smaller-scale, like an ME XCOM-type game rather than a full-on narrative RPG first.

If we just want to look at "have the skills", then CDPR would be the #1 choice, maybe they could dump Project Hadar for it, but I have a feeling Project Hadar may be space SF anyway. It seems very likely that or something Lovecraftian. They certainly have experience doing a great job with licenced IPs.

•

u/BloodChaosZero 5h ago

CD Project Red maybe?

•

u/CaleanKnight 5h ago

They are full with The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2... so definitely nothing from them for at least a few years.

•

u/Warlock646 1h ago

Yeah… as long as activision doesn’t turn halo into another bloated COD that requires 250gb just to install the installer

•

u/F9-0021 1h ago

If they were interested in that, they would have just sold BioWare.

•

u/username_tooken 7h ago

Likewise, BioWare has been a corpse of its former self walking around for a very long time now. Everything ends.

•

u/Shootzilla 7h ago

Dream scenario is if Arcanaut gets the keys to Mass Effect after Fate of The Old Republic.

•

u/Lady_Calista 7h ago

Dream scenario really is the spiritual successor type games being good. We need more titles like Greedfall where other studios try the Bioware formula. Im willing to give up the ME ip to get away from EA

•

u/MatterSack 49m ago

The new Expanse game might scratch that itch.

•

u/Lady_Calista 23m ago

Yep, or that original sci fi rpg coming out, I forget the name. Osiris maybe?

•

u/Lazer726 5h ago

Man I wish that studios would ever just sell the rights to shit, but knowing them, they'll just hold onto everything Bioware ever made and never let anyone do a single thing in any of their beloved universes ever again

•

u/tebowtimenyj 6h ago

“Find what you’re looking for amongst the dead?”

•

u/Jace_09 6h ago

It all spawns from the terrible Mass Effect 3 ending and Andromedas disaster immediately after imo.

•

u/Kasiser67 5h ago

I blame Anthem.

•

u/MadHiggins 2h ago

ME3 ending is the little domino that lead to the middle sized domino of Anthem that lead to the big sized domino of Veilguard and that's what crashed through the door and let the wolves in to tear Bioware to pieces.

•

u/ranfall94 4h ago

The bitter thing about Bioware is it sounds like they still had good talent that wanted to do right by the legacy of the company and make good rpgs but the studio heads kept getting in the way.

•

u/13143 6h ago

An Activision Halo is just going to be COD in space.

•

u/ihatepests 2h ago

so itll be better than every Halo 343 has ever released?

•

u/DwP820 7h ago

I get that, I’m more concerned with the possibility of them rebooting the franchise. The novels are what got me consistently returning to Halo through the 343 years, and if all that’s washed away then I can’t really be bothered to care what comes after personally

•

u/Shootzilla 7h ago

Whoever said they were gonna reboot the franchise and wipe away all the canon? That's a very silly concern.

•

u/Meme_Scene_Kid 6h ago

about that...take it with a grain of salt mind you since this YT channel is the only person who has talked about this so far but Rebs Gaming has been right in the past so we'll see.

•

u/ihatepests 2h ago

it would absolutely be a good thing

•

u/Cabana_bananza 6h ago

Can you imagine a Raven Software take on a boomer shooter style Halo? That could be cool.

•

u/kiwipoo2 5h ago

Call of Support Duty

•

u/BuddhaFacepalmed 5h ago

I'm fine with Halo moving to Activision. Halo studios had their chance multiple times and there are plenty of super talented FPS devs at Activision that are just waiting to get off COD support duty.

Lmao. If you think that Activision will be anything but GenAI slop, I have beachfront property for sale that you might be interested in North Dakota.

•

u/thattogoguy 6h ago

Fair, but I just don't want another damn reboot, like Disney did to Star Wars (another franchise I had to leave behind.)

•

u/tebowtimenyj 6h ago

Age of empires 2 moving to Activision on the other hand…

•

u/EndOfTheDark97 5h ago

It’s still insane to me though. Many of these franchises are so beloved by all, but it’s just not enough anymore. Industry’s truly going in the wrong direction.

•

u/parkwayy 4h ago

I wish I had this kind of blind optimism.

•

u/Shootzilla 1h ago

Definitely not blind lol.

•

u/brunocar 1h ago

This is something you say when you dont realize how truly bad things are gonna get lol

•

u/Shootzilla 1h ago

Oh really. Tell me how much worse it's gonna get. Tell me how bad it is that talented FPS devs are gonna get a break from COD support duty. Go ahead. Id like to know.

•

u/brunocar 1h ago

Ok, so first of all, im fairly sure you havent played, like, most post pandemic, warzone era call of duty games.

Its gotten BAD, every 2 releases we get as brand new gimmick mechanic that gets ditched for the next one and annoys the shit out of people (all the weird shit in MW2, omni movement in BO6, etc.), then every inbetween entry is a pseudo sequel thats effectively just a 70 dollar expansion to the last game (Vanguard to MW19, MW3 to MW2, BO7 to BO6) where they basically just change the assets, tweak the gimmick mechanic a bit, and literally let you carry over your progress like its an expansion disk for a PS1 game, these also usually have HORRIBLE campaigns that are at best 6 hours long and full of warzone slop.

•

u/Shootzilla 1h ago

Lol I have disregarded your opinion. Has no idea the history of these FPS studios, how much talent they hold and how they are all dying to be taken off COD support duty. An FPS going to Activision doesn't immediately mean a COD clone. Have some critical thinking skills and prior knowledge related to what I talked about before wasting that amount of time on your response.

•

u/brunocar 56m ago

Has no idea the history of these FPS studios, how much talent they hold and how they are all dying to be taken off COD support duty

yeah ok buddy.

Let's see: Treyarch? Blundell, Vonderhaar and Zielinski all left so thats literally the 3 leads that made black ops what it is, Infinity Ward? its been hollowed out for a decade, current leads are hacks that cant write for shit and all the important talent like mission designers and animators have left due to bad treatment (look up who made the distinctive MW19 gun animation style), Sledgehammer? founders left a while back.

And thats just the main ones, nerve and high moon are hollow shells too, while raven was ok till the whole cold war takeover debacle they had with sledgehammer, which led to the unionization and then a bunch of leads leaving frustrated that they were still leaving mistreated.

TL;DR: you dont even know who these people are and what their names are, dont even direct a word towards me if you cant be bothered to know who is making your games.

•

u/Shootzilla 45m ago

I will rub it in your face when they release a better Halo game than Halo studios ever did.

•

u/SilveryDeath 4h ago edited 4h ago

I'm fine with Halo moving to Activision.

Same. I'm not thrilled about it, but after Halo Studios couldn't nail what should have been an easy slam dunk with Campaign Evolved how can anyone trust them with yet another attempt at a mainline game.

•

u/MapleWatch 4h ago

343/HS was a dumpster fire from the start and got more chances then they deserved. You really have to be dense to take one of the biggest IPs in gaming and run it into the ground because you don't like it.

•

u/hirvaan 7h ago

Pokemon bank shutdown? I don't know what any of this means :(

•

u/DwP820 6h ago

There was an app on the 3DS called pokemon bank. For the past couple years it’s been active despite support ending for the 3DS shop. It’s the only way to transfer pokemon from 3DS and before to pokemon home on the switch.

The option to move my gen 3 pokemon forward to the new games always made me happy, and now that it’s closing in February, I’m in a rush to transfer all my pokemon and finish up shiny hunts I wanted to do. After the shutdown I have no reason to play the old games anymore

•

u/KalaUposatha 6h ago

No one should ever trust cloud based servers for anything. They will inevitably stop being supported at some point, then everything is gone forever.

•

u/DwP820 6h ago

Oh they were open about it shutting down at some point, and they gave 6 months warning. It just sucks, cloud based anything is horrible. It’s the main reason I’m never getting another console

•

u/COREY-IS-A-BUSTA Tali 7h ago

My 3 favorite franchises :( atleast I have fallout

•

u/Tatum-Better 7h ago

Bethesda and obsidian seem washed tho unfortunately

•

u/COREY-IS-A-BUSTA Tali 7h ago

Should I kill myself now or later then twin

•

u/RipMySoul 5h ago

We might as well get it over with twin.

•

u/F4nt0m3 5h ago

> Halo moving to activision
wtf? i couldn't imagine worst than activision or ea for halo

•

u/Plutarch_von_Komet 7h ago

And Age of Empires 2 being given to Activision

•

u/TokenStraightFriend 6h ago

Meanwhile, Destiny fans:

•

u/JootDoctor 3h ago

Ace Combat 8 has been the only thing saving me.

•

u/deathbylasersss 7h ago

Luckily I gave up hope on those many years ago when they went to shit and stopped making good games, so it hurts a lot less.

•

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 6h ago

I haven’t been this disappointed since the Shadow Hearts series were getting a spiritual successor that ended up slowly dying into vapourware

•

u/Smokester121 4h ago

Pokemon bank closed? Wow. Think it's time to reverse engineer that crap

•

u/DwP820 4h ago

Not yet, but a couple months ago they announced it will be in February

•

u/Smokester121 3h ago

These greedy bastards milked everyone and now gonna just bin people's mons

•

u/Zerosprodigy 3h ago

Bank shutdown isn’t til February right?!

•

u/DwP820 2h ago

Yeah it’s just the announcement that came a few weeks ago. It doesn’t shut down until like 25 Feb

•

u/magnus150 2h ago

Between being priced out of my favorite hobby (PC gaming) thanks to chatbots, bioware finally being taken out behind the shed to join everyone else in the mass grave, and then let's just say "global affairs" to keep it civil, this whole past couple years have been a bummer.

•

u/Far-Blacksmith-6963 14m ago

Halo moving is a good thing, 343 hasnt made anything good in the 15 years they had it

•

u/thedrunkentendy 1h ago

343 had more than enough chances to make a good game. Worst part is the apathy about this news. Not even disappointed in this news when these studios have been riding on nostalgia from 2000 to 2012 and mediocre products after that.

•

u/Scruffy_Nerfhearder 2h ago

Sorry but, Activision has way more of a chance of making a good Halo game than 343 (Halo studios) ever did. 15 years of mediocrity and excuses. They deserved to be shut down. Awful company that never truly understood what made Halo great. At least Activison have a huge amount of experience making massively popular FPS games. Even if you don’t like call of duty, there’s a reason it remains a juggernaut to this day.

•

u/t4nn3rp3nny 1h ago

Sorry but, 343/HS did infinitely more for Halo than Bungie ever dreamed of and produced two of my favorite games in the franchise so seeing it go to Activision to be filled with AI slop and promotional collabs is literally the worst possible case scenario.

•

u/SmugmaDugma420 4h ago

jesus christ man get a life youve gotta be coming up on 40

•

u/DwP820 3h ago

Not close my friend, but regardless people have hobbies
