Ive never understood it tbh. Nickleback has some bangers

u/scranston 12h ago
There’s some great videos analyzing why hating Nickleback became such a big thing. But they’ve said that the hate has actually allowed them to endure whereas their contemporaries have all faded away.
If I recall correctly it boiled down to many acts at the time were “above” commercial concerns and Nickleback was openly revelling in the money.

Nobody wants to admit that we all just wanna be big rock stars, and live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars

u/ChilledParadox 6h ago
I’d take being able I simply afford the base necessities actually, 15 cars gives me anxiety. Id simply like to eat whatever I want and buy insulin when I need.

I hate that fucking song. I like other songs (silver side up was a cd i owned) but I fucking hate that song.

I admit I want to be like Chad Kroeger (of Nickleback) and have an indoor ice rink in my basement to play hockey.

u/Dempseylicious23 12h ago
But they’ve said that the hate has actually allowed them to endure whereas their contemporaries have all faded away.
While I don’t doubt the hate has helped Nickelback ultimately, is it really true that no other act from the late 90’s / early 00’s has stuck around?
Foo Fighters? Jack White? Blink-182? Just to name a few off the top of my head.
29
u/Crabapple_Snaps 12h ago
Personally I grew to hate them, because the radio station I listened to at the time over played them. It was just too much. Creed was in the same category, and they both sounded so similar to me that it made it that much worse.
8
u/Simba7 9h ago
I called that genre "Creed-likes" in high school.
Seether, Staind, Puddle of Mud, Nickleback (and many more (like Hinder, eugh)) were all basically the same band. A bunch of pretty popular bands all around the same time, but Nickleback was the biggest.
Then there were a bunch of other bands that sounded pretty similar. Foo Fighters, Fuel, Breaking Benjamin, etc. Not Creed-likes but similar enough that it oversaturated the genre.
And since Nickleback was the most overplayed, they got the most hate.
It helps that the "Look at this photograph." got memed on so hard.
2
u/avantgardengnome 8h ago
The term that has since coalesced for this subgenre is “butt rock” lol.
1
u/WickedBrute 32m ago
It isn't. I had a whole conversation of this at work with some coworkers younger and older than myself and we figured out that everyone's definition of buttrock was vastly different. It was fun.
1
u/avantgardengnome 25m ago
I would put every band mentioned in the comment I replied to except Foo Fighters firmly in the butt rock category. (Foo Fighters are as quintessentially just “alternative rock” as anyone I can think of atm, gun to my head I guess they’re sort of a flavor of pop punk but that doesn’t feel right to say lol).

For me it was that fucking counting crows song with the parking lot about did me in during high school.
I remember in like a CAD class I had first thing in the morning, the teacher always played the same station, and that song would come on every day like clockwork while I was still groggy. Was like torture by the end of the semester.
I don’t know what it was but something about that time it was just like there were so many bands just doing the same basic shit with songs that had like no dynamics at all.
7
u/hiimsubclavian 11h ago
Yup. The memes piled on later, but I think what initially sparked the nickleback hate was just that their few hits were way overplayed.
Maybe 20% of people like them, but the other 80% can't escape them.
-1
u/SeeShark 8h ago
I think you're projecting the internet's memes onto humanity. Nickelback is clearly popular despite (or, according to them, partially due to) all the online hate.
Time Of Your Life is the most overplayed song in history, and nobody hates Green Day because of it. Frankly, most people who were annoyed by the song still like it if it's infrequent.
1
u/sleepydon 5h ago
No this was back whenever most peoples access to music was radio. The band's producer was also the person at iHeart that curated the radio playlists. iHeart had recently bought out 90% of the nation's radio stations. So one guy got to pick what songs were in rotation. He heavily put Nickleback in there because every time one of their songs played. he received an airplay royalty. If it sounds like their's a conflict of interest going on there, that's because there is.
2
u/Hrmerder 11h ago
Couldn't have said it better. Both Nickelback and Creed followed the same generic corporate meeting on a white board showing 'medium-long haired tall white male singer' + 'slightly grovely voice that can hit some average highs' + 'they will play generic song themes we want them to play' = 'music we can sell to 13 year olds'
1
u/SeeShark 8h ago
There are plenty of bands far more generic. Nickelback actually has more interesting songs on their albums, but the radio stations never seemed interested, which is kind of sad.
1
1
u/GOTHAMKNlGHT 2h ago
From my understanding this is why most people dislike Pop music. I remember working at a bank in like 2013, and they had the local radio station running all day. This was in a small town, so small selection of stations too.
It was the first time I head Roar by Katy Perry. I thought it was...fine. A decent bop.
Within a week I wanted nothing more than to smash that tiny portable radio to bits. At least once an hour, probably like 3 during their "ad free lunch hour" or whatever.
8
u/baphomet1A4 12h ago
A lot of people dont like them because they were really overplayed for a long time
5
u/Historicmetal 11h ago edited 11h ago
They just sound so bland to me. Maybe because I associate them with department stores and working in the gas station. Those songs were just everywhere and they still make me weirdly nauseous.
Seems like it’s no longer cool to be on the nickleback hate wagon. But I’m gonna stick it out
1
u/tophmcmasterson 11h ago
Yeah, I always describe them as being aggressively mediocre. You would hear them all the time but it never made me feel anything but bored.

When I worked in Alberta, one of the guys I worked with had a nickleback feud. My hometown starts with an H and could potentially sound like Hannah, or be confused with it.
He would say (my hometown) isnt that where Nickelback is from? I would say No, thats Hannah, from your province. They're yours.
Thus we were constantly trying to blame each other for nickelback
1
u/SuperRonnie2 4h ago
Love it. Nickleback is among the most Alberta things in BC. The most obvious one is Kelowna.
1
u/mrsirsouth 8h ago
Canadian rock band Nickelback has sold over 3 million albums in Canada, as part of their 50 million-plus records sold worldwide. Their breakout album Silver Side Up remains their highest-selling domestic release in Canada
Nah, you and the people you hung out with didn't like them.
1
u/SuperRonnie2 5h ago
Well, the population of Alberta is just over 5 million. Throw in the Fraser Valley and Sunnyvale Trailer Park and that explains it.

It started because a few of their singles sounded the similar, and then people started to realized a lot of their songs sounded the same, even on of the same album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHPj5YokEOY
They abused the 4 chord songs (Pachelbel's Canon) which became well known due to Axis of Awesome. In other words, all of their singles use the same 4 chord progression as other popular songs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pidokakU4I
The rest is bandwagoning.
1
u/SeeShark 8h ago
Pachelbel's Canon is entirely different from the 4-chord song. It's actually an 8-chord progression.
Axis of Awesome 4 chords: I V vi IV
Pachelbel's Canon: I V vi iii IV I IV V
(Also, Nickelback are not even a notable offender, as you can see from the Axis of Awesome song. Pop punk was lousy with 4-chord bands.)
1
u/JViz 7h ago
This is what I was regurgitating with the comment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM
The idea that songs were getting recycled came into the public consciousness around ~2005 - 2010. In my memory the Axis of Awesome video got merged with the Pachelbel's Canon rant and Nickleback was abusing it at a time when public backlash to this was at an all time high.
2
u/SeeShark 7h ago
The frustrating thing (to me specifically lol) is that there are a bunch of songs in their discography that aren't that. I think Blink-182 are probably bigger offenders. But the radio only played Nickelback's most generic, marketable songs, which really contributed to this backlash.
1
u/PeenFifteen 12h ago
They’re all good musicians, but Chad writes some of the cringiest lyrics. They are the first band I think of when someone mentions Butt Rock. Watch a video of them playing live, though, and you’ll realize they’re very tight musically. Chad can shred, and their drummer lays down some of the tastiest beats.
1
u/kymri 5h ago
The thing a lot of folks don't like to admit about rock music is that -- just like many other genres -- sometimes the lyrics aren't that important, they're just more texture. The vocals are another instrument.
Everyone knows the Beatles were great and unfathomably influential and wrote some great songs, but there's also their early pop stuff (I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Hard Day's Night and so on) as well as entire sections of Hey, Jude that are just 'na na na'.
1
u/BritishEric 4h ago
Hey Jude is about 7 minutes long. Roughly the first half are the verses and what I’d consider the main melody. The entire rest of it is “na na na nanana na. Nanana na. hey Jude.”
It’s a good song but definitely could stand to shave a couple minutes off
1
u/Cainfaer 11h ago
It was less about the music and the (I guess) toxicity and drama surrounding the actual people of the band. Not entirely sure what they did (I asked my parents, and I don't remember specifics, and I was like 5 when it happened), but it caused a lot of backlash and people have hated them since then
1
1
u/pattperin 10h ago
They had some unreal stuff early on, but later they made just some shitty radio rock and called it a day. Early Nickelback is actually fucking awesome imo and I’ve seen them live twice, they put on a hell of a show
1
u/Ghostronic 10h ago
We can entirely blame Brian Posehn for all the Nickelback hate reaching the mainstream

And on a related note, here Shane Torres defends Guy Fieri.

Band members, and not to mention the roadies they travel with are gross assholes lol. I hung out on their tour bus with an ex partner whose relative was a tech for them.
They got some good songs, but I don’t really care for them after that experience especially lol
1
u/spartanEZE 12h ago
I've been genuinely loving Nickelback since their first album. Truly never understood why they got the hate from everyone. Even some of my best friends would comment or ask about it and i never had an answer. I guess maybe this video sorta captured the idea though. Some people just want to hate mainstream and popular stuff just cause. Well not this guy. 😁😁

1
u/GerardWayAndDMT 12h ago
Anytime a rich person writes a song about how much they hate their miserable life, I don’t vibe with it. I know they were trying to get the average working person to relate to the song but still. That’s like a guy with arms telling a guy with no arms how horrible it is to have arms. Or.. something like that.

u/contra_band 11h ago
There have been videos overlapping their songs and they have the exact same formula, layout, and cadence. I don't doubt they write music that people enjoy - i just know that I don't enjoy the soulless, repetitive qualities of their catalog
1
u/tophmcmasterson 11h ago
I want to say I was in high school around their peak, and I think the best way I can describe it was that they were just so overplayed and like aggressively mediocre.
And I think there’s something about the guys voice that just makes the songs so even more samey. It just like makes me feel nothing, and that ends up being grating when you hear it over and over. To me it’s just like an example of music that most people find inoffensive, but at the same time nobody really likes it that much.

Its bandwagoning. They arent bad at all, but people HATE them and cant usually even explain why. My friend is like that. He listens to all sorts of rock and metal and stuff but has the biggest hate boner for them. If it was a band like modest mouse, i could understand. Literally one of my favorite moments in time was when modest mouse made an actual good song, and it hit the radio, suddenly they were selling out stadiums and almost immediately disappeared again once people realized lol.

Nickelback get's hate not because they have made some good music because yeah they actually did make (a few) that I have heard, but it's very specifically due to them being the bubble gum band of the 'Post Alternative' music progression AND because the band is played so many times over and over it's akin to Mariah Carey (yeah I know... She is well on her way to thawing). For the youngin's out there, when I say 'bubble gum' it means it's generic everyday crap. Same sounds, same boring things over and over spoon fed to the masses because it sells, not because it's innovative, heart felt, or otherwise.
Some of their biggest hits are just generic themes regurgitated. 'Rockstar' is the most disingenuine version of the 'sellout' to corporate music song ever. I think it was supposed to be pitched as 'I want the lifestyle so of course I'm going to sell my soul to do it'. Wow... Great.. We already know they did. On top of that it was almost like a slap in the face of a song compared to the classics on the matter such as 'devil went down to Georgia', The Rolling Stones - 'Sympathy for the Devil', etc.
'Photograph' wasn't THAT bad of a song? I dunno just wasn't my cup of tea.
'How you Remind Me' was a descent song. I feel like that's the only song I care to listen to by them.
And I am sure there are 'better' (hopefully) songs deep into their records, but... None of their airplay songs make me want to dig deeper.
That doesn't mean Nickelback deserves all the hate they have received, it means they need to innovate.. But also it means that it worked, because well... For a band that should have dropped off the face of the earth in 2010, they didn't. Here we are today talking about them. Hate sells too and this is a good example of it.
I mean.. Let's give a different example. Green Day's Dookie.. Great album. Even if you go back today, everyone knows Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, and When I come around, but you start listening to this album, and if you already liked these three songs, stuff like 'She', and 'Pulling Teeth' alone could have been their own huge songs for different reasons.
But I think as ages have came before, the masses get sick and tired of hearing the sale old crap regurgitated over and over. That doesn't mean it's bad music, it means we have heard it too many times before and we get the 'uncanny valley' effect of realizing.. It's intentional for sale not because it's great music..
Even now with Rap that has had what... An almost 30+ year domination on the music industry in general is starting to collapse. Nobody cares about the 100000000th song about 'f&&kin' hoes', 'shootin' thugs', showing off money, and people having your back... If I want to listen to that, I'm listening to Nate Dogg & Warren G., Old school Snoop, or Dr Dre, Ice Cube, etc. Who didn't sound like someone who can't rap or sing having a seizure on a microphone that bought a 5 pad Casio drum kit at walmart and now they think they sound good with autotune doing most of the heavy lifting in any chorus situation.

Yeah they've always had a very underwhelming sound, I've never been a fan. But there is a lot of horrible music out there, and a lot of tone deaf and possibly brain damaged music listeners, even the worst music is gonna be loved by someone!

I personally find it much more fulfilling to hate Hoobastank. Like they loved Incubus SO MUCH that they went out and made a band sounds like a watered down commercialized version of them, which is sad because Incubus is so lame to begin with.

The problem with Nickelback was their brand of generic soulless butt rock became the trend. You would change the radio station and instead of listening to Nickelback you’re now listening to Hinder Lips of an Angel. Gross right change it again and now it’s Trapt Headstrong. So on and so forth.
It infested the entire rock genre and killed a lot of good rock.
