Ive never understood it tbh. Nickleback has some bangers

Personally I grew to hate them, because the radio station I listened to at the time over played them. It was just too much. Creed was in the same category, and they both sounded so similar to me that it made it that much worse.

I called that genre "Creed-likes" in high school.

Seether, Staind, Puddle of Mud, Nickleback (and many more (like Hinder, eugh)) were all basically the same band. A bunch of pretty popular bands all around the same time, but Nickleback was the biggest.

Then there were a bunch of other bands that sounded pretty similar. Foo Fighters, Fuel, Breaking Benjamin, etc. Not Creed-likes but similar enough that it oversaturated the genre.

And since Nickleback was the most overplayed, they got the most hate.

It helps that the "Look at this photograph." got memed on so hard.

The term that has since coalesced for this subgenre is “butt rock” lol.

It isn't. I had a whole conversation of this at work with some coworkers younger and older than myself and we figured out that everyone's definition of buttrock was vastly different. It was fun.

I would put every band mentioned in the comment I replied to except Foo Fighters firmly in the butt rock category. (Foo Fighters are as quintessentially just “alternative rock” as anyone I can think of atm, gun to my head I guess they’re sort of a flavor of pop punk but that doesn’t feel right to say lol).

I think the genre is "post-grunge"

Whoa Seether I think does not belong in that category

For me it was that fucking counting crows song with the parking lot about did me in during high school.

I remember in like a CAD class I had first thing in the morning, the teacher always played the same station, and that song would come on every day like clockwork while I was still groggy. Was like torture by the end of the semester.

I don’t know what it was but something about that time it was just like there were so many bands just doing the same basic shit with songs that had like no dynamics at all.

Yup. The memes piled on later, but I think what initially sparked the nickleback hate was just that their few hits were way overplayed.

Maybe 20% of people like them, but the other 80% can't escape them.

I think you're projecting the internet's memes onto humanity. Nickelback is clearly popular despite (or, according to them, partially due to) all the online hate.

Time Of Your Life is the most overplayed song in history, and nobody hates Green Day because of it. Frankly, most people who were annoyed by the song still like it if it's infrequent.

No this was back whenever most peoples access to music was radio. The band's producer was also the person at iHeart that curated the radio playlists. iHeart had recently bought out 90% of the nation's radio stations. So one guy got to pick what songs were in rotation. He heavily put Nickleback in there because every time one of their songs played. he received an airplay royalty. If it sounds like their's a conflict of interest going on there, that's because there is.

Couldn't have said it better. Both Nickelback and Creed followed the same generic corporate meeting on a white board showing 'medium-long haired tall white male singer' + 'slightly grovely voice that can hit some average highs' + 'they will play generic song themes we want them to play' = 'music we can sell to 13 year olds'

There are plenty of bands far more generic. Nickelback actually has more interesting songs on their albums, but the radio stations never seemed interested, which is kind of sad.

Creed reformed after dumping Scott stapp and forms alter bridge with Myles Kennedy. still putting out albums to this day and are way better

That band's songs Blackbird and broken wings I think are way better than anything Creed ever put out. I think Crete is aggressively overrated

From my understanding this is why most people dislike Pop music. I remember working at a bank in like 2013, and they had the local radio station running all day. This was in a small town, so small selection of stations too.

It was the first time I head Roar by Katy Perry. I thought it was...fine. A decent bop.

Within a week I wanted nothing more than to smash that tiny portable radio to bits. At least once an hour, probably like 3 during their "ad free lunch hour" or whatever.
