My wife literally freezes with fear and cannot function if she's walking on anything that's over 10 feet in elevation because her dad told her to buck up and made her ride a roller coaster at 11 years old.
LOL, coincidentally my wife had a work trip to Banff last year and noped out of team building exercise to walk the glacier/mountain trails.
I give her a lot of credit though as she at least tries to get out of her comfort zone. We recently went on a hike in Brasov, Romania on muntele Tampa (which is really more of a big hill)... she made it about 100 yards on the switchbacks. I literally had to carry her around parts of Machu Picchu years back.
London tower glass floors had her on the floor beside the glass floor shaking and crying in fear. Muir woods in San Fran had her hugging the trail wall because of a near 10 ft drop at the edge, the trail was a good 20ft wide lol. There's at least a half dozen or so stories like this. Add to the list of questions you need to ask while dating lol.
I have 0 issues with heights. I have been, and will continue to this week, working on top of a 15ft ladder on a 6 story roof. But the glass floor at the CN tower broke my brain when I was a teen, and my body refused to walk over it. I managed to scoot across the grout lines to take a family photo, but I couldn't get my body to walk over the glass itself despite knowing it was safe.
i wonder if they scienced this for a solution, maybe Dr.K GG has some ideas. They understand so many things we didn't before and even know how and why it forms and how it works in the brain.
That's ... Honestly kind of pathetic. We have the ability to get over shit, letting something like that completely own and control your life, and then affect others as well? Irresponsible
That exactly what I thought when I was first dating my wife. I just couldn't understand how someone who has literally no fear in other situations, often to the point of incredulity, is terrified of heights - something that doesn't bother me at all. Then I realized people have ultra deep-seated psychoses that are nearly impossible to break.
And that's ok, everything doesn't have to. But there's a part of me that would almost be angry about that and try to get over it MORE, like fuck that my goal is to skydive now. People are different
They are broken rationality. The brain making an error and trying to protect itself by doing the completely wrong thing. True rationality is the exit out of a phobia
