Harry Potter Survey Results & Final Decision
Alright crafters, the results are in! There’s a TL;DR at the end of this post, but we did want to explain how we got here and the choices we’ve made along the way, too. As a quick recap, the mod team noticed a pattern of off-topic conversations and uncivil conversations whenever someone posted crafts related to Harry Potter, and members of the community raised concerns about allowing such content in the subreddit. It was compared to hate speech, due to JK Rowling’s increasingly vocal bigotry and use of her political, economic, and social platforms to further that agenda, as documented here and here. We knew there would be no perfect solution to this problem, and that anything we did would leave some people feeling hurt and upset. But we felt it was important to address the issue, so we asked the community a little bit ago in this post about what they think we should do, and we discussed it as a team as well.
While some commenters opposed the idea of banning it, those discussions were largely centered around concerns about whether it would lead to more censorship. In our experience, posts about other “problematic” topics and IP do not lead to the same level of off-topic conversations and arguments that Harry Potter posts have. Additionally, Rowling is causing a significant amount of concrete and widespread harm towards entire marginalized communities, and as members and supporters of those communities, we felt that removing her influence from this subreddit should still be on the table. So, we created a poll to get simple, concrete feedback on one question: To ban, or not to ban? We limited voting to accounts that were at least 60 days old, and had at least 50 Reddit karma and 10 community karma, in order to keep it to community members and try to avoid brigading for either side. So, here are the results:

As we can see, it wasn’t a complete landslide in either direction, and those who voted definitely tended towards strong feelings on the topic! After gathering 1,232 total votes, 53% of those who voted in the poll are in favor of banning posts related to Rowling and Harry Potter, while 41% of voters are against banning it. Our intention with this post was to gather feedback on the community’s feelings, because comment sections alone aren’t always representative of a full community, and we wanted to give those who aren’t comfortable commenting or aren’t well-spoken a chance to speak their minds. And it seems like the results are pretty clear! While there’s a decent number of people who don’t support Harry Potter posts being banned, the majority certainly does seem to support this ban - as do the members of the mod team.
So, what does this mean for the subreddit? Well, crafts that are directly related to Harry Potter can no longer be posted here. If your craft isn’t obviously Harry Potter, and you don’t reference it at all, you can still post it - for example, a red-and-gold scarf is perfectly welcome, so long as you don’t describe it as a Gryffindor scarf. Wands are fine, even if they’re similar in style, so long as they aren’t explicitly “inspired by Harry Potter.” But a papercrafted Hogwarts, or a replica of a specific character’s wand? Not allowed. We are currently working on updating the wiki in general, and will add a page about this ban in the wiki, including informational resources like the ones posted above and guidelines on what is and isn’t allowed. But generally speaking, any identifiable reference to Harry Potter is going to be a no-go, and moderator discretion will be the ultimate decider on what is and isn’t considered “Harry Potter-related.”
This also doesn’t mean we’re planning to start banning all kinds of IP and inspirations - as stated earlier, we found that Harry Potter posts generated far more issues and conflict than any other IP, and no other IP has been raised as a concern to the same degree. We talked about it, and while we all have companies or creators that we as individuals don’t love to see discussed in the subreddit, no other topic has been so universally controversial and caused so many problems from a purely logistical moderation standpoint. If, in the future, another similar issue does arise, we will handle that as it happens. We may not ask for feedback in the same way, because to tell the truth it stretched the issue out and caused more stress than we meant it to. But for right now, no other topic seems to be causing so many problems both within and outside of the subreddit, so we have no current plans to ban anything else.
Comments on this post are locked, as we don’t want to encourage debate about this topic. We had plenty of that in the original feedback post, and at this point we’ve made our decision. However, if you would like to clarify any aspect of this new rule, or you still have questions about why we chose to do this, please feel free to reach out via modmail! Please also note that we’ve had a couple of mods leave recently, bringing the team down to just four of us. While we are adding new members to the team soon, it’ll likely take us a bit to work out all the kinks with this new rule, as it does with any change to the subreddit! Please be patient with us in the meantime, and remember that the mods are people too, and we are all dealing with our own issues and responsibilities irl.
TL;DR After a community vote, and much discussion from the mods, posts and discussion about Harry Potter and JK Rowling are no longer allowed in the subreddit, and will be removed going forward.

Work in Progress The gaze
The artwork is created using a meticulous hand-beading technique, with individual beads applied to a felt backing to construct the portrait. Rather than serving merely as decorative elements, the beads function as the primary medium through which the image is developed, defining its forms, tonal variations, and surface characteristics.
The careful selection and placement of beads of varying colours, shapes, sizes, and reflective qualities create a complex interplay of texture, light, and colour. Each bead contributes to the overall composition, allowing the artist to build the facial features through material, density, and chromatic relationships rather than conventional brushwork.

Family/Friend Crafted My 9-year-old made her mom a Halloween phone case out of paper 👻
My daughter (9) drew this for her mom’s clear iPhone 16 Pro case. We printed a blank template for the phone, cut the camera hole, and she drew the ghost, witch hat, cauldron and pumpkin. Pencil shading behind the ghost makes it pop.
Cost: one sheet of paper. Swap it whenever she gets bored.
Tip: print at 100% size, and cut the camera hole last.

Work in Progress Progress/testing pics for concrete dyes for upcoming projects!
Hey all! I just finished up a batch of test swatches for concrete dyes to see what they look like at 10:1 so I can reference them for future work and I figured I’d give back and share the results so far. I’ve been unable to figure out exactly what sub would be the best home for this kind of stuff so I’m defaulting here to the more general crafts. It’s not really casting as that’s more resin and metals, and the concrete specific art and crafts ones are basically dead. If anyone can think of a better home for this content I’d love to get a referral!
The material used for this is Rockite, and the dyes you can see in the pics. My goal is to use them to make a cool custom chess board that can be polished and sealed. Something more robust than this pilot project that was tinted with chalk dust. Some of these colors are SUPER vibrant so I’m excited to put them to work!

Finished Craft I Made Homemade Cardboard Monstrosity. Aka My Furby Diva
This project took me a couple of weeks but my giant shiny diva is finally finished! The first few photos were taken by my husband yesterday while it was raining. Our neighbors officially think we are crazy and have Ring camera footage to prove it.
The following photos are some of the progression of building my Furby monster. I wildly over engineered the dome but I know for a FACT that it will hold up for a long time. The cardboard was water sealed and spray painted to give it longevity too. Adding the tinsel was the longest leg of this project. Apparently I forgot that shorter tinsel garland exists so I spent many hours cutting a curtain and laying each individual strand of tinsel on a piece of packing tape to make my own strips. Then I had to hot glue those strips to the body. This. Took. Forever.
I learned a lot of lessons and I definitely plan to make another Furby in the future. Diva needs a friend for sure!
Edit1: Wow you guys, I really wasn't expecting this amount of love and traction from this post. Thank you for being so lovely. Always remember to stay crafty!

Finished Craft I Made I made a toy chest for my niece!
I very recently became an uncle which was the perfect excuse to jump into a new project!
This is by far the biggest project I've done, it was made entirely with hand tools (that's all I've got!) and reclaimed wood from a pallet!
As a bit of a challenge to myself, and because I thought it would look nice, there are no nails or screws in the entire thing. Everything, even down to the hinges, is made with dowels to hold it all together. The only none-wood parts are some glue and the rope handles!
Very happy to answer any questions you may have :)
I know this isn't the finest work (there are some incredibly talented people in the sub!), but I'm really proud of this, and I hope my niece gets some really good use out of it!

I finished another box bag the other day and I wanted to share. I followed I found and it was fairly simple.
I started sewing back in May of this year and I'm hooked. This was the 3rd zipper I sewed. I was so intimidated to try and use them but I'm glad I did. Now I can try to work on other projects that have zippers.

Discussion Question about an idea I have.
Hey everyone!
Im looking for double sided metallic paper or craft poster cardboard. Im having trouble trying to find it. Or even thin metallic covered plastic. I would like to make some old fashioned Christmas decorations like in the 90s and 80s.
Picture for example.
Hence why i wanted touble sided lol.
Does anyone have the proper names for them even?
I know you can get proper plain coloured poster cardboard and paper, but I want metallic on both sides. Not just metallic on one side and white on the other D:

Discussion Waterproofing drawing on a tshirt
hello all! I got a very special T-shirt with a hand-drawn picture fro my Camino de Santiago last year. A volunteer hand drew the cathedral of Santiago on it, it looks very great and is now a dear memory.
However I have realised that he did not draw with a waterproof pen, so I can’t really use the T-shirt as I won’t be able to wash it.
is there any way to get the drawing waterproof now after it has been drawn already?
thank you a lot in advance for suggestions!

Work in Progress I made my first Paper Mâché Pigeon Mask for Halloween. Coo coo!
Hey everyone! Excited to share my first time Halloween costume project ever — a full DIY Paper Mâché Pigeon Head!
Here is how I made it using mostly recycled materials:
The Base & Frame: I got some thick paper from Costco, cut it into strips, and glued them together using PVA glue to build the basic structural skeleton of the pigeon.
Shaping: I used leftover brown paper takeout bags glued over the frame to build up the main shape and contours.
Sculpting (Paper Mâché Clay): I made paper mâché clay out of shredded newspaper mixed thoroughly with PVA glue, then used it to sculpt all the details and features of the pigeon!
If you have leftover paper mâché clay, just wrap it tightly in plastic wrap (cling film) to seal it. It stays fresh and usable for your next sculpting session!
Painting Pro-Tip: I use acrylic paint but didn't have a paint palette on hand, so I wrapped plastic wrap over my table to use as a makeshift palette — worked like a charm and made cleanup super easy!
Super happy with how it turned out. Hope you guys like it, and happy Halloween! 🐦✨
I’m off to make wings!
