A cautionary tale of woe to take into account if you get appendicitis and your surgeon comes at you suggesting or insisting upon antibiotic treatment as an alternative to surgery.
Surgeon refused to take my appendix out when I had appendicitis and told me the following;
âSurgery for uncomplicated appendicitis is outdated and a mistake of the past, antibiotics is better and the future of treatmentâ
And
âAfter antibiotic treatment your appendix will shrivel up and be cured, and you will have just a 15% chance of reoccurrence..â
He refused my repeated and valid requests for surgery and continued to make more and more dubious claims about the benefits of antibiotic treatment, such as..
âGoing along with antibiotic treatment will be like money in the bank for your business..â
He treated me with 56 infusions of triple IV antibiotics and IV paracetamol over 5 days then discharged me with no follow-up telling me I was âcuredâ. As I was discharged I said to him âthis has all been a bit experimentalâ. In reply he snorted down his nose at me and said emphatically;
âYou have no more chance of coming back in here with appendicitis than the average man in the streetâ
I left that hospital with what has now been diagnosed as permanent neurological/brain damage from one of the antibiotics pumped into me, and with a tumour growing in my appendix that had caused my appendicitis and would go on to rupture and become a stage 4 tumour later.. The NHS refused a second opinion as my GPâs referral and escalation letter was ignored.
I eventually paid a private surgeon in Glasgow to take my appendix out - thatâs when the ruptured tumour was found - but by that stage no longer curable by appendectomy. I also had to pay for private neurologist tests and scans to have my nurotoxicity symtoms diagnosed.. I complained to the NHS but they claimed to have done nothing wrong, and would do the same again..
I did a bit of reading up.. The evidence in the medical literature supports the following;
- 50% treated with antibiotics will have reoccurrence within 4 years, many involving subsequent rupture.
- 1 in 30 cases of adult appendicitis are caused by a tumour in the appendix that canât be seen in scans. If left it these tumours will go on to cause appendix cancer.
The linked article is a recent study that follows up about 1000 appendicitis patients and supports the above facts. The study concludes;
âConclusions
Antibiotic treatment of appendicitis is associated with high recurrence and risk of missed neoplasms. Appendicectomy is safe, with low rates of significant complication. When offering nonoperative management for appendicitis, patients should be informed about the risk of recurrence and missing sinister pathologies.â
The evidence says that treating appendicitis with antibiotics is just kicking the can (or grenade) further down the road for the majority of patients. It seems that some surgeons are not following the evidence and misguiding patients. Where does âinformed patient consentâ fit into all of this..? Iâm interested to hear other peopleâs views and experiences with this..
