Yesterday I discovered I need surgery, following a recent day off of work where by 8am I had managed to lock my knee, give myself multiple meniscus tears and an MCL injury through the extreme sport of 'standing up in my 30s.'

Condolences, my friend. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I broke a toe a few days ago. Healing it in my late 60s is gonna be a long slog, I think. My extreme sport was walking shoeless, in the dark, past a piece of furniture that has been in the same spot for decades. It's been lying in wait all that time.

Yeah, I’ve done a few of these. That’s why I finally relented and started wearing house slippers. The good news is that bones should still heal up in about 6 weeks, even at your age.

I broke my toe a few years ago on my kayak rack. I’m in my 60’s. Foot dr told me it was going to be a while to heal. Had to get all new shoes.

30’s? How has 30 become geriatric these days. Has human lifespan dropped to 50?

u/Baelish2016 10h ago
Super sedentary lifestyles, little to no exercise, bad eating habits, etc etc.
Obviously not the case for everyone (bad luck, illness), but it makes up a decent chunk of it.

Hell I’m 54, eat nothing but processed bs, exercise is little to nothing and a lifetime smoker. I feel healthier than most of the comments I see here 😆

Oh I’m well aware that the Pizza Hut bacon and shroom pizza I just ate will either be heart burn or heart attack…or both 🤔

I've experienced that too, went to the er for heart attack, they give me antacids and muscle relaxant. 😂

I am just learning this now from this thread. As a 49yr old I suppose this is goodbye, I wish all of you redditors well and thanks for the laughs and memes, god speed.
Except for you Patrick, see you in hell.

I tore my meniscus leaning over the couch to plug in halloween lights in 2008. Twisted my knee to get back to seating position and my knee had a chunk of meniscus flap away from the bone and lock my knee in a 20 degree angle. I was 24.

Yep that'ss me: bucket-handle tear. Still can't straighten my leg, but at least I can touch the floor now. My leg was basically stuck at 90 degrees for the first three days!

Going through it right now bro. I was diagnosed around puberty (14) with floating joints syndrome. This is my 14th dislocation in 25 years between two knees. All i did for this one was slip on some standing water from my leaky washing machine in the laundry room here at home. I have also had seven surgeries in that time. I feel for you bro...like i said I am back in the brace for the 14th time right now.
Whatever happens surgery or not....kill it at physical therapy. Do what they tell yoy and then some. My last surgery on my right knee was so extensive they told me I would never walk right again. Took almost two years but I do not walk with a limp, when both knees are at least stable
Good luck and god speed brother!!!!

Kind of lol. This is what happened. During my development all my joints decided to be fine..except my knees. I have about 1/3 of the joint depth (where your knees sit in the joint) that a normal person has. So too much torque at all and I end up in the ER with a dislocated joint the orthopedic doctor has to be called for to put back into place. This last disloacationmy knee was out 3 1/2 hours before they could set it, talk about misrable

I once popped my chest plate tying my shoe. It took two years to heal and hurt like hell. I was in my thirties. I'm now 44 and scared of everything.

I dislocate my shoulders and/or elbows by the extreme sport of reaching for something or dislocating my hip from a bump in the road

I have hyper-elasticity in my ligaments, dislocated my shoulder the day before my 21st birthday. Dislocated it 12 times over the next decade. Had shoulder surgery at 31, couple years later tore my rotator cuff. One of my dislocations was because I was putting on a button down shirt.

u/Dependent-Green-7900 8h ago
Buttons are the worst, I have Classical EDS, I think I was diagnosed so early because my mother was dislocating my shoulders and elbows trying to put me in the infant car seat and I was diagnosed at 6. I manage to dislocate something at least once a day

u/Dancinfool830 8h ago
I am sorry to hear that. That is a tough diagnosis. For what it is worth, I am proud of you.

I am 46 no knee issues or anything. But then again I never over achieved at life. So it all comes out = at the end.
Always took the easy job.
Never jumped out of a perfectly good airplane.
And made watching TV a national sport.

Knees are the worst design. Mine have always been an issue, compounded by a couple of injuries in my teens which were never properly healed.
So in my late 50s I got them both replaced.
Today I could kick myself for not doing it sooner:
Alignment and rotation restored, all I had to do was proper rehab and staying active.
Today I have no pain, perfect stability and mobility, I'm skipping everywhere like a kid.
... Well except on rainy days, I'm a walking barometer, lol.

You just got up??! Without warming up or anything?!!? You gotta prepare for vigorous activity. Can’t just be getting off the couch like you’re coming off the bench in a NBA game.

Last year i broke my leg by trying to stand, my leg fell asleep so iust collapsed. Also in my early 30s

u/sorestgore 10h ago
Sounds about right. After 29-30, our bodies are actively trying to self destruct. My 37 year old coworker threw his back out last week while doing the extreme activity of brushing his teeth

It’s gonna get worse a friend of mine in the 60s stood up off the couch and fractured his leg right near his hip and had to spend a month in care. He had really good insurance and they waited on him hand and foot, but it was still a month away from home.

31 here. Tried to put on a sock while standing up. Out of nowhere my lower back effectively froze, sharp pain up to my cervical and down to my knees. I just remained in the bathroom like I was electrocuted and screamed in pain. My wife was very confused. I have no lower back problems, generally speaking. I am a personal trainer, so I'm fairly active. Now I can kinda arch my back a little, but it hurts. Hope I don't have to go to the hospital. I am confused. And I am 31.

44 and getting a total hip replacement in a month. The left will be in a year or 2. Hereditary severe osteoarthritis is no fun.

I fractured my shoulder by sleeping on my side. No I'm not overweight. I'm only 52kgs. I'm only 39.

I’m 24, completely ruptured my PCL and slightly tore my Meniscus while dancing in January.
Haven’t had surgery, mostly recovered via physiotherapy. Hang in there bud.
It’ll suck, really bad but you will feel improvement as you heal after the surgery. Focus on the recovery and don’t skip physio. Best of luck!

I slipped a disc in my back by leaning over

got a similar injury when i was picking up a pencil from the floor in a chair when i was ~15
the spot still gives me issues to this day, the human body is strangely fragile and resilient at the same time

I totally understand. Hurt my back 12 years ago and it will never heal, all i can do is go to the gym to manage it.

I tripped down one step and broke one ankle and 3 bones in the other foot. That's when I found out that I have weak bones. One step!

I fell down 2 stairs at home and landed on my left side - luckily didn't break anything BUT had to have steroid injections for soft tissue injury on my foot . Weeks later, discovered tendinitis in my left hand for which I am still undergoing painful PT. my grip strength in my left hand is near zero. I hate getting old !

Just wait until your 40s and 50s. It gets so much worse. Getting old sucks

u/DinkyPrincess 8h ago
The most important thing now is healing and committing to physio.
I’ve had four knee surgeries and two replacements. Just trust me when I say your future mobility relies on listening and committing to what your physiotherapist tells you to do.
Best of luck.

Stem cells over surgery worked wonders after two total knee reconstructions and still tore in rehab sessions. Due to inexperienced therapists.

Sympathies. Gave my knee permanent damage in my early 20's by locking it at a concert for two hours, sprained my foot in my late 20's by the epic act of standing up and dislocated a rib in my 40's by the high impact activity of straightening up in my chair after leaning forward.

Sorry for your injuries - that sucks. I've recently recovered from 18 months of back to back meniscus surgeries on each knee. A couple of suggestions that helped:
- Metamucil for regularity, gut health, and to overcome immobility.
- Physical therapy; as much as you can tolerate, even prior to any surgery for core strength and to prevent cascade injuries.
- I'm a sneaker collector and found the most forgiving and stable sneaker for my knees to be the Nike Vomero Plus by a wide margin.
Best of luck with your recovery!

It is crazy. It seems like the last 3 injuries I had which stopped me from running happened in my sleep. Please don't sleep wrong in your 40s it can severely affect your life!

Welcome to 30s. I tore my ligament while walking on a normal, straight street.
