I keep seeing screen tearing randomly just from scrolling dragging stuff around and when i just launched a game. I'm about to lose it lol, I know its not a GPU issue as this carried over from my AM4 build that was running the same Ubuntu 26.04 but somehow on my new PC i keep seeing it randomly. Also a note, I didn't have a riser on my new build unlike my old pc which had a riser for vertical mounting
Looks like the VMWARE console locked, not my server.
@antreides fixed by suggesting to take over the session using the 'screen' command but with the -D and -r options to force takeover of the locked session.
thank you!
----EDIT----
Original Post below:
Good Morning all,
I realize we are all trying to get PHP updated since the new issues have surfaced, but I hoped maybe I could get some advice on how to move forward.
I use this Ubuntu server for Nextcloud, which after updating to the latest version, the admin panel informed me that I needed to update my MySQL and PHP to newer versions (funny timing amr?)
I noted that I could not upgrade MYSQL and PHP due to being on an older release (22.04) and so I prepped my server for the release update.
Started the process and things were going smooth, but all of a sudden the screen locked here:
Terminal for my Nextcloud server
it is still 'blinking' but nothing (ctrl-x, ctrl-c, ESC,) is being accepted. This is a VMWARE Virtual machine on ESXI, I am using Workstation Pro to interact with the console, as there was a fair amount of warnings to not do this via SSH.
I can start up an SSH session, but I am not sure what commands I can do to resolve this, or can I just restart?
here was the terminal output when I connected:
Using username "administrator".

here is what I tried
sudo dpkg --configure -a
dpkg frontend lock was locked by another process with pid 3445425
Note: removing the lock file is always wrong, and can end up damaging the
locked area and the entire system. See <https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Dpkg/FAQ>.
sudo apt full-upgrade <--to resume from the terminal
Waiting for cache lock: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 3445425 (jammy)... 0s
I tried to run Top to see what process that was, but I guess because it is not pulling resources I did not see it.
I'm dealing with a chain of strange issues on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and could really use some troubleshooting help.
Sequence of events:
Bluetooth missing: Earlier, the Bluetooth adapter randomly disappeared (toggle vanished from Settings and the top bar).
Reboot: I rebooted the machine, which successfully brought Bluetooth back.
Dock glitch & Missing App Menu: Right after that reboot, the "Show Apps" (App Grid) icon completely disappeared from my dock.
Dock lag / Stuttering: On top of the missing menu icon, the dock itself has become extremely laggy, stuttering, and unresponsive when hovering over or clicking icons.
Video:
What I've tried so far:
Toggled the Ubuntu Dock extension in GNOME Extensions.
Logged out and logged back in.
System specs / environment:
OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (GNOME Shell)
Session: Wayland (default)
Has anyone experienced this cascading issue or know if a recent shell update / graphics compositor issue causes this dock behavior? Any terminal commands to completely reset the Ubuntu Dock settings and GNOME Shell configuration would be greatly appreciated.
Finally joined the Ubuntu gang! This is my first time using a Linux distro. Was getting so sick of using Windows. Had to finally shift and was not gonna go to Apple env. So far looks really smooth and good!
I need to set up fully encrypted drive (for security reasons) with separated /home partition (in case of updating Ubuntu to newer versions in the future and to protect my data). I use Asus Expertbook PM3 Ryzen AI 7, 16gb RAM, 512gb nvme and I've installed Ubuntu 26.10 on this machine. I wonder if there is a way to do that? I'm a newbee in disc partiotioning. Do I need to reinstall whole OS?
So, recently upgraded from 24.04 to their latest 26.04. Everything else looks and feels great.
The only issue I have is that when I game(games are from Steam) the mouse keeps going to the second monitor which I have on the right side.
Thought it was just for 1 game but tried several other games and it’s still acting the same. Tried using game scope command to add to the game launch but it messed with the resolution.
Read something about 26.04 upgraded to a new wayland.
Anyone else VLC suddenly switched to dark mode without you knowing? Of course,o use system dark mode since the day one, (25.10)but VlC was in the light mode until now
I am trying to reinstall my desktop but when I try to update I get stuck at ‘ connecting to archive.canonical.com [185.125.188.87]’ what to I have to change?
eventually the update goes through I get some warning
Then I proceed to try to install desktop and finally get this screenshot errors and my desktop fails to return
And I am stuck here in the second screenshot
Soo yesterday I made dual boot for u untu and window , but I was facing some issue as I have 1 SSD on my laptop and both os works , is it okay if i totally switched on Ubuntu as college engineering students ,
Is ubuntu good for coding and study
I love the customization , I will not game should I totally switch too ubuntu ?
Internal panel on the Intel iGPU (eDP-1, 1920x1080, ~144 Hz). External monitor over HDMI (1920x1080, 60 Hz). The HDMI port is wired to the NVIDIA GPU, so the dGPU stays active while the monitor is connected.
Secure Boot disabled
Software
Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, GNOME, Wayland session. Prompt=lts is set and the 24.04 → 26.04.1 path is enabled in meta-release-lts.
Kernel 7.0.0-38-generic
NVIDIA driver 580.178.04 proprietary (closed), nvidia-dkms-580, DKMS built for 7.0.0-34 and 7.0.0-38
prime-select: on-demand
26.04 archive has nvidia-driver-580580.178.04-0ubuntu0.26.04.1, the same upstream version
NVIDIA configuration in use (effective values from/proc/driver/nvidia/params)
Governor performance, intel_pstate active, TLP 1.10.2 from the linrunner PPA
Video
Chrome 155 with --enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiVideoDecodeLinuxGL. Decoding runs on the iGPU with intel-media-va-driver-non-free 26.3.2 from the kobuk-team PPA. The dGPU is not used for decoding.
1080p YouTube stutter was fixed earlier by capping quality at 1080p (that case was on X11).
What I found so far
Launchpad #2143635 (kernel panic before suspend with NVIDIA modules, kernel 7.0) and #2149963 (duplicate): “Fix Released” only for nvidia-graphics-drivers-595 and -595-server. There is no task for 580. I found no report that reproduces it with 580 on an RTX 3050, but one comment mentions an RTX 3050 Mobile with 595 on kernel 7.0.0-15.
I found no public report for the LOQ 15IAX9E on 26.04.
Unclear to me what ubuntu-drivers picks on 26.04 for an Ampere laptop (595-open vs 580).
Current status
External monitor hot-plug, PRIME offload and Chrome video tested on Wayland: all three passed. HDMI replugged 3 times with both screens coming back at 1920x1080; offload app appeared in nvidia-smi and the dGPU went back to suspended with HDMI unplugged; 1080p in Chrome played smoothly with hardware decode.
Questions
Anyone running 26.04 (or 24.04 with the same kernel) on a LOQ 15IAX9E or another hybrid Intel + RTX 30xx laptop? How are suspend/resume, HDMI output and dGPU runtime power management?
Is NVIDIA 580 closed still a good choice on 26.04 with kernel 7.x, or should I move to 595 or an open module? Any known problem with the DKMS build or suspend on 580?
Do EnableGpuFirmware=0, pcie_aspm=off, pci=nommconf and the other cmdline options still make sense, or can they cause trouble after the upgrade?
Any known problem with GNOME 50 on Wayland with the HDMI port wired to the dGPU (freezes, tearing, VRR)?
Advice on the upgrade itself: PPAs without a resolute series (CopyQ), third-party GNOME extensions, Python 3.14 venvs, sudo-rs?
Me recomiendan pack de iconos que estén lindos para Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, no busco esos que imitan los de MacOs. Soy nuevo en este mundo y busque que se puede modificar
