According to reddit, all we really need is for hamburger flippers, and coffee servers to be paid enough to be able to afford a high rise apartment in any major city's downtown district just 3 minutes from their job, while eradicating straight white men and women
5
u/realaccountissecret 21h ago
I used to work in a 24 hour diner breaking up hobo fights and could still afford a nice apartment in a major city without roommates…. Twenty years ago
Still straight though

“We need living forests,” “we need more housing!” “We need more books!” “We need more money!”
Yeah…. You can’t have living forests and want more houses, and paper products.
“Well we need more paperless processes!”
Okay that is far more expensive, guess will go mine cobalt.
“NO, that’s incredibly bad for the environment!”

I do live in the forest.
All of this is one way:
I travel 30 min to get downtown, 15 min to get groceries, and about 45 min (sometimes an hour) to see my friends.
I don’t eat out at restaurants, I don’t do “coffee shops” I have an electric and central heat and air (didn’t have that going up), and septic tank… and a phone.
Internet is a little flaky.
If you want to live in the woods: do it.

they dont effect my life in the slightest, and yes they do create jobs.

All of these things can coexist. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
Yes, flying cars may be impractical right now, but the technology developed in the process could still have useful applications elsewhere.
Yes, we may not need billionaires, but that doesn’t mean we should automatically punish someone for building a successful business and becoming one.
If you can’t understand the nuance here, STAY AWAY FROM POLITICS.

u/Stegomaniac 13h ago

I think a billion is a ridiculous number that no one should be hoarding and anything over one billion should be taxed at 99 to 100%. It still allows all people to be as creative and successful as they like, still be ridiculously and absurdly wealthy, and all that taxed money can be used for real good.

u/arawnamusly 16h ago

u/Free-Stage-5975 16h ago
This is what we call a non-sequitur.
Personally I think we do need billionaires because it shows the market is relatively free. Free markets tend to be significantly better at making everyone rich because people can actually make money in the country.
There are real problems in France, the UK, and a lot of Europe because taxes and bureaucracy are extremely high and oppressive. It's very difficult to become rich and people find it difficult to live on the money that they have because so much of it goes to the government. Ironically wealthy people end up paying enormous amounts of tax even if their overall tax rate is lower.
Water, food, and living standards tend to be better in wealthier societies. Wealthier societies can afford gas so we don't need to cut down all the forests in order to have heat.
To put it succinctly billionaires actually keep the forest nice, the water pure, and the food healthy because freedom generally improves everything.
3
u/coast2coasted 10h ago
You need the free capital that billionaires have to invest in innovation. This is where nearly all of the nice things we have come from. You think there would be an iPhone, or most modern medicine, or an affordable car without huge investment into developing these things?

Then why don't you go live in the forest in your communes? Oh that's right you love products the billionaires produce. You'll buy your iphones, moan on Reddit, eat fast food, put money in a bank, use Windows, buy a car, download Steam, drink Coke, buy a Samsung and watch your favorite shows on Netflix.
You're all hypocrites. But if rich people come together and put their money into progressing the human race beyond the 1400's you scream bloody murder.

Ah yes the mythical billionaires that emerge from the aether and shit out an iphone. Do you know the amount of mathematics, scientists and societal advances were needed for any of that? The literal roads that paved the way for that good to even get to you? What is even the argument here?
6
u/wraper 21h ago edited 13h ago
Scientists and mathematicians are all very necessary. The issue is they cannot magically poop out large-scale industries and mass production. It simply amazes me how some people think a bunch of random scientists, engineers, or whoever would pop out of nowhere by themselves and make things happen. No evil corporation needed, as it's just a tool for workforce exploitation.
3
u/Ok-Possibility-6284 20h ago
People like Norman Ernest Borlaug literally saved billions from starving with his contributions to food production, and so did many other scientists that society often forgets. It takes a special kind of egomaniacal person to believe they deserve to extract so much from others work, scientist like norman know they only got so far because they stood on the shoulders of giants. So they share the wealth and don't become billionaires, yet billions prosper and live, Ill take that kind of society any day of the week over billionaires who pull up the ladder behind them and shoot down anyone encroaching on their massive hoard.
I would argue billionaires and soon to be trillionaires are the opposite of a functional society when contrasted with the level ofinequity on the other side. The climate collapse alone and it's true costs will erase whatever illusion in accelerated development and limitless growth you say was an advantage.

u/Dry-Regret5444 11h ago
The world needs billionaires. Behind every great innovation that’s ever taken place in the world, there’s been a person or group of people responsible for it. They create things that make the world better and sell products and services that we all want. Most of these billionaires didn’t start off rich, so it also provides hope that getting to that place is possible for anyone if you have the right idea and possess the drive, ambition and work ethic to get there.
All this fake outrage. It’s nothing more than petty jealousy and projection of inadequacy.
They’re wealthy and your life sucks.
2
→ More replies (3)3
u/Ok-Highlight-9598 10h ago
Literally. The way idiots want the world to work is for everyone to be on equal footing which decentivizes innovation and would lead to a boring life where no one is doing anything new or improving because they would get nothing for it.
2
u/Dry-Regret5444 10h ago
