Other Reddit is my TikTok and it’s bad
We all hear about how addicted people are to TikTok nowadays. Well, Reddit is my TikTok.
I catch myself opening this app every 5 minutes like something important happened. Half the time I’m just reading random posts and comments.

Rather follow a sub than a person

Yeah, I feel like Reddit has a certain level of realness to it. With TikTok and Instagram, so much of what you see feels fake or staged.

Reddit is like James O'brien's Mystery Hour. A lot of mindless drivel, a guaranteed laugh, and the occasional Ray Liotta.
You'll scroll for hours, rummaging through the bottomless well of mediocre musings until you stumble upon a comment written by someone with decades of knowledge in a particular post. I love those moments.
Someone, somewhere, said that Reddit was the front page of the Internet. I like that. It's the first place I go to see what's going on around the world at the beginning of my day.

Reddit has more than it's fair share of bot activity too.
"certain level of realness" is a delusional thought regarding any major social media website.

I miss websites and dedicated forums.
You had to seek out a topic to find it, it wasn’t thrown in your face

Doesn’t help that I deleted Instagram and Facebook, and got rid of TikTok a long time ago. Now all I have left is Reddit and LinkedIn. Guess Reddit just took over.

u/OkBrilliant8092 2h ago
It could be worse… if you were on LinkedIn all day you’d just die from being so upbeat and inspirational… stay down here… with us…. Mwahahaha

u/Farts_constantly 2h ago
Haha so true. LinkedIn is full of toxic positivity and bot commenters.

Yup. You’re n the best place for now - it just so happens that all of out there can seem a little kuh-er-razy - I never let this echo chamber in too far…. Coz life is always a little crazy…. :)

Stay in the dark side. One of us. One of us!
At least on reddit, you get to choose what u want to consume. On TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, everything is just shoved at you. Having choices are so nice.

Same with me. I love Reddit because it’s text-based, it reminds me of my early Internet experiences with message boards, also feels more like how social media felt when i first joined (2006-era Facebook

u/minderbinder49 2h ago
Yeah I really don't like videos and I feel like that makes me an alien lol. It's just too much, I don't need a constant barrage of sound playing at me all the time

u/Astra-Fang Millennial 2h ago
For me it’s less that I like Reddit.
It’s more that I have thoughts I am trying to avoid, and 5 minutes to think is enough for them to come back.

u/No_Actuator_5149 2h ago
Seriously though. A lot of them time I jump on Reddit as a means to escape whatever the fuck I'm trying not to think about it.

u/endlive 2h ago
Same here...no other social media, and lately I'm on reddit nonstop. All the hatred and negativity is seriously affecting my real life!!

u/SoftSects 56m ago
I'm in the exact same boat. It's my only form of social media and I just open it to scroll. I recently moved to a new area with less nature and actual seasons, so I haven't been doing my normal outdoor rec hobbies so I've been inside on my phone :(

Mine too and i go back through my comments to see how many up or downvotes Ive collected
2
u/No_Actuator_5149 2h ago
Yep, I am guilty of this as well. To be honest, I think most of us are. It's kind of a natural reaction, you know?

u/eleyezeeaye4287 Millennial 1h ago
I used to do that all the time! Now I have so many years and so much karma on here that I don’t care if comments get downvoted.
•
u/affectionateanarchy8 Xennial 38m ago
I get banned once a year, this is like my 6th reddit account. I dont mind downvotes, sometimes i post a response so bad I just know itll collect downvotes lmao builds character

I like reddit too, reminds me of the old internet forums in the 2000s. Reels and short form videos are annoying and kinda overstimulating. Too much to keep up with. I like how Reddit is more go at your own pace.

Trim the subs you follow to the most important ones and turn off recommendations in your feed.

Having a reddit addiction will always be better than a tiktok or IG addiction. Short form video content causes brain atrophy and reduces attention spans. At least with reddit you are using your brain to read through posts and commenting.
•
u/lone_wolf1580 1h ago
Reels didn’t cause my short attention span. My attention span has always been short.

u/AffectionateWallaby2 2h ago
Reddit is my social of choice too… it just feels more natural. I don’t know why.

u/ThatResponse4808 2h ago

I am all or nothing with Reddit and TikTok. I’ll spend all my free time on Reddit for a week or two, then somehow get stuck on TikTok for a week or two without touching Reddit. A vicious cycle. Actually leaving for a vacation today and the plan is to open neither!
Edit: obviously not touching either AFTER I leave. Haven’t left yet. Still bored at work 🫠

Gotta have atleast one app addiction, reddit is mine as well; used to be facebook but it was turning me into an unbearbly toxic person and i was constantly seeing red when id open it lol im still.working on not being an asshole here as we speak, its a whole different culture from facebook

u/SweatyChancho 2h ago
Same. Reddit is my only social. I got rid of all the others. It’s not as addictive as TikTok to me but it is still addictive. I miss the positivity I found on TikTok but it was like crack 😂
1
u/WiggingOutOverHere 2h ago
I fall into this too.
I’ve found screen time apps/settings to be helpful to me in being more mindful of the time spent. If you’re in the feelings phase, I won’t give annoying unsolicited advice on the matter, but let me know if you’re curious what things I’m referring to. :)

u/theinjun 2h ago
Ah, a true Redditor then! Turns out the Narwal does bacon at midnight and it’s pretty kush here. Remember we were the real OGs before the other social medias started popping up, aside from Facebook I believe.
1
u/CougarPanther83 1h ago
That’s why I only do Reddit in bursts. I will use it for a few days or a week, then make myself quit for six months when I realize how I’m rotting brain.

u/vinnybawbaw 1h ago
I’m also doomscrolling on Reddit. Helps me a lot with English because it’s not my primary language.

u/bagelsforeverx 1h ago
It’s like it replace my cigarette addiction, take a break from work just to tik tok.

•
u/starryeyedluv 1h ago
I use the screen zen app to monitor how many minutes I can be on certain apps / websites and how many times I can open it throughout the day. Right now I have it set to 5x in a day for 15 min max

u/mindylynx 57m ago
got rid of tiktok as soon as i saw that certain thank you message pop up to a certain orange 🍊 cheeto. i knew the app was over. reddit is all we have left

u/Mx-Adrian 45m ago
It took me so long to join Reddit, and it has become oddly addictive and maybe my favourite social media. It's so strange, but someone below pointed out something about it being text-based and reminiscent of early forums, so maybe that's the allure for me. I love the reading and typing and various communities, and it's both entertaining and educational.

u/Rhianna83 Xennial 15m ago
In the same boat. I only have Reddit and LinkedIn but I’m on this app for hours. I need to remove it from my phone.
