Discussion Guess the year of the yearbook!

Two different yearbooks, both from the same year. First four photos are from a school in Glendale, AZ. Last four photos are from a school in Martinsville, IN. I know this might lean more toward older millennials but still fun.

I'll share the answer later!

Edit: ANSWER IS 1997!

I'm saying 1996

1995

7

u/geezdads 4h ago

Those Pippens didnt release until 96

5

u/mightysockelf Xennial 3h ago

Ha! I was gauging off of the shoes too. I also think 96. I was leaning a few years earlier at first because of the monitor size, but then I remembered it's a school and they'll hold onto older equipment until it breaks.

2

u/nomolosnitsuj Xennial 2h ago

Hell yeah! Shoes and hair. Pre ‘98 because I don’t see a single tip frosted. Saw the Pippens and knew it was ‘96 or ‘97.

Yeah, my guess is 96, thats the 7xxx series of the Power Macintosh, which came out in 1995, schools would have had it that year and the following year for sure, Apple was still heavily discounting computers back then.

That, and those denim shorts are too faded to be late 90s, by the late 90s stone wash was pretty rare.

6

u/nightowl_work 3h ago

Also later 90s into the 2000s we were seeing shorter shorts with lower waists and ripped hems.

2

u/jacksonmills 3h ago

Yeah and the striped shirts w/ the thicker baseball collar stopped being as popular, regular ol' baseball shirts and "faker grunge" (t-shirts that looked like you were wearing two shirts, but were actually just one shirt) tees kinda replaced them.

Agree with 96! My sister graduated in 96 and slide 4 with the jean shorts, socks and doc martens was basically her uniform 😂

11

u/SteveEcks Xennial 4h ago

The elastic leg jeans with a tucked in shirt.... That is post 95 pre 97 hard

15

u/Fast_Lavishness2367 3h ago

I was thinking 94, but after staring at the computers for a little bit, I’m adjusting to 96

5

u/Additional-Drawer-21 3h ago

I’m team 96

4

u/ErchweanEmperor 4h ago

I agree, based on the election sign, I don’t think it would be 92 and I doubt it’s 94 midterms. Could be wrong tho

4

u/-Chunder-Donkey- 3h ago

Jumping on the 96 band wagon based on jeans. I feel like it was around 1997-1998 that bell bottoms really jumped back into fashion for the ladies. I was in seventh/eigth grade that year and remember coveting this one pair of bell bottoms hard. I'm not seeing any bell bottoms in any of these photos. Otherwise I was totally leaning towards later 90s

2

u/CrittyCrit 2h ago

This was also my guess. 1999 at the latest. 2000 style started to lean way more into Abercrombie and urban streetwear. Bucket hats, crew socks and ankle booties, and straight leg jeans with those very specific black high top sneakers are all very late 90s coded. And hair gel. My god the hair gel on everyone from 2000-2010. Very distinct from the 90s.

•

u/Contemplating_Prison 1h ago

Same haha right before I opened the comments I said 97-98 by the 4th picture

76

u/BravoHotel321 4h ago

I agree, this is definitely 1998.

51

u/Cosmo_Cloudy 4h ago

I'm going to guess 1993 because this looks extreeemely similar to my mom's high school yearbook from that year

15

Wild! Yea she had me I think somewhere between ages 19-21, I was born in 96, and I think 93 was either her junior senior year. Things looked so different then. Even though I'm on the cusp of being a millennial I was definitely raised as a 90s kid and fondly remember how it all looked. Things are so different now! Thanks for the reply

I landed on 98. The first picture is difficult because the ladies on top left scream early 90s, but the guys scream late 90.
The sandals and the gym gave it away as late 90s.
In my opinion.

1998 here as well.

38

u/youngyaboy 4h ago

98 was my first thought also. I’ll extend it 3 years to 2001, the latest. There’s no possible way this is from after 2001.

16

u/snotparty 3h ago

The daisy sandals especially those were a very mid 90s thing

8

u/Imjustcasey 3h ago

That's what I was thinking! The shoes in pic 3 and the bucket hat in pic 4 make me think 97.

12

8

u/WorldlyPipe 4h ago

1998 is my guess too

6

Same. Not early 90s cause there is a lack of perms. Late 90s they mostly disappeared.

I am shocked that there are so many 2000+ guesses with the amount of lingering 80s hair shown. Not even in the Deep South would any teen have been caught dead with that hair by that point.

28

u/Suspicious_Inside_78 3h ago edited 3h ago

The distinct lack of these makes me think we’re not yet in the 2000’s here:

But the curling iron bangs make me think we’re past 1995, so my guess is 1998.

I grew up in a podunk town in Washington state and remember being super jealous of my classmate’s big fluffy bangs in 1996. My mom could never get my mall bangs that fluffy :( To be fair though I was 8 so not really on the bleeding edge of fashion lol

2

u/not_responsible Zillennial 2h ago

dude i went to high school in north idaho in 2011-2014 and ladies in town had 80s hair. One dude dressed like young bill gates, those big 80s glasses with button ups and jeans. He was probably wearing his dad’s clothes. He was like a walking time capsule

I see no butt-cut hair. But not a lot of spike or faux hawks. So, I could go 1998. Right before Carson Daly hair takes off. But well after the early 90s grunge

7

More like 96-97.

4

u/DadCelo 1987 Millennial 4h ago

57

u/StunButton 4h ago

1996 based on the Nike shoe design release date.

24

u/geezdads 4h ago

Those indeed are the Pippens from 96

12

u/millenialismistical 3h ago

Shoot, missed the Pippens, you're right this has to be 96-97. My first guess was 93 but those Pippens tell the story.

4

u/sorrymizzjackson 3h ago

I don’t know the Nikes, but my instinct was 96 due to the heavy embroidered sweatshirts and those plastic heeled sandals.

2

u/HerAirness 2h ago

The Pippens & the flannels have me at 96

18

u/henrytm82 Older Millennial 4h ago

This had '98 vibes written all over it

17

u/mBrooks- 4h ago

96-97 is my guess. The blue and white shoes that say AIR on the side are the Nike Air More Uptempos worn by Scottie Pippen. They were released in ‘96 so depending what semester the photo was taken, I’m betting 96-97.

37

u/mrtoddw Xennial 4h ago

The Lollapalooza shirt came out in 1996. The Macs in the computer lab are Power Macintosh's 7500 which is 1995 - 1996. The G3 macs were absolutely everywhere by 1998-1999.

I would guess about 1997 or 1998.

7

u/Scary-Detective582 3h ago

That Lollapalooza shirt is from 1995.

3

u/Scary-Detective582 3h ago

I’d guess those are 7200’s, not 7500’s. (They were released at the same time.)

1996 - the Nike uptempos were released that year.

23

u/KidVsHero 4h ago

You can tell it's the late 90's by how all these teenagers look 30

9

u/blessitspointedlil 3h ago

Mid-90s. Female hair has too much volume for late 90s.

5

u/i_kill_plants2 3h ago

Unless it’s somewhere in Texas. Especially Dallas.

3

u/matrixplaydoh 3h ago

So funny how we go back and watch shows and films from late 90s and 00s and think how on earth did we believe these people were teenagers but then I see this and realise we actually did look like that

6

u/deadlyvices 3h ago

No earlier than 1996, solely based on the Nikes in the third picture. I'm guessing 96-98, because the style of the Nike More Uptempos changed in 1998.

6

u/j3ffUrZ 3h ago

This is definitely somewhere in the ballpark of 1995-1998 based off:

• The Nike More Uptempos

• The Macintosh computers

For real, I lived on the West Coast and no one was dressing like this in the late 90s. I'm shocked by all the late 90s answers. The girls were already wearing low-rise flairs in the late 90s where I lived, and we had straight hair, no 80s hair. I would guess 1995 at the latest.

2

u/MysteriousHoneydew82 3h ago

I had the same experience in high school in the late 90s the girls were wearing the low rise flares and body hugging tops. The hair was starting to get straighter and a lot of layered haircuts like the Rachel from friends. There were some goth Marilyn Manson people too and guys were mostly prep or skater
