I like having kids, but I understand if people don't want to have them.  My brother isn't having kids and I appreciate his honest self-assessment that he'd be a shitty dad, because he would be.  Kids take a lot of self-sacrifice (if you're doing it right), and its ok, possibly even better, if people don't want to do that.

The problem is that the people who lack that awareness keep pumping out kids, who end up being shitty adults themselves.

I don't understand the mentality of people who insist everyone have kids.. heck... Those who have kids and want their bloodline to carry on should wish less people have kids. That way there is still a planet left for their progeny......

I didn’t know anyone was still insisting on that. I hear/read a lot more about how it’s irresponsible to have kids because the world is melting or turning fascist or running out of food or whatever apocalypse folks are wringing their hands over.

My sister in law always looks sad and miserable whenever me not having kids comes up at family gatherings and idk if it's because she regrets her own or because she wants me to commiserate with her and is annoyed that I never will (I am not saying parents are inherently miserable but my SIL doesn't hide the fact that she had hers out of some weird sense of obligation and hasn't ever spoken fondly of motherhood).

Before my hysterectomy, I used to get the whole "have kids!" spiel to go along with it from various relatives, co workers and others

It’s definitely a worthwhile consideration I hope people who ARE planning to have kids will take into account. I love mine, and I’d do it all over again, but children are, objectively, a giant pain in the ass. I can absolutely understand how parenting could become soul-crushing.

What I don’t quite understand is the mindset of wanting to artificially create additional child-related misery, whether it’s related to having them or not.

Thats new - im almost 45 and until probably these last few post pandemic years the mainstream narrative has been HAVE KIDS WHY DONT U HAVE KIDS IF U DONT HAVE KIDS THERES SOMETHING WRONG WITH U WHY DO U HATE KIDS. Especially as a woman ive heard it NON STOP over the years

I'm 37, and female, and I've never wanted kids, and my husband doesn't want kids, so the ship has sailed. The past few years I have been getting bombarded with messaging, from people as well as the algorithms, about how I'm never going to know what it feels like to be a full human being with a purpose, never know what actual joy and actual love feel like, and I'll die having failed at the only thing that actually matters. Oh, and I'm also a disgrace to my entire civilization and probably also to God.

Then they ask me why I'm so depressed and tell me it's because of my ancient, erratic, perimenopause hormones.

Early to mid 30s and known I would be childfree since 16 for medical reasons, and because I would be bad at parenting. Non-stop and when I tell people it will never happen they tell me I'll change my mind. Let me just change my uterus and ovaries too and maybe it'll happen.

Yeah I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a misogynistic component factoring into it.

Life was better before I knew about the anti natal movement. I don't see it often these days though, didn't seem to gain much traction in the end. Probably because most people realized it was fucking stupid lol.
