Same. My surname came from Ireland to America in 1849 and promptly popped out 13 kids. Through a combination of marriage, war, priesthood, farm accidents, and general Irish drunkenness I'm the only living male with that surname out of probably close to a thousand descendants. I have only girls.

Sounds like your bloodline is fine, just your surname is on the way out.

I have only girls. But our surname is cool and they like it so... if their SO's don't have good last names they better have brothers to carry the burden. My kids aren't gonna be up for swapping their maiden name for Shittlegranger or whatever

Fun fact: his girls DO NOT have to change their last names!

So if children are had, the child could use their mothers last name, especially of out of wedlock!

No, they don't have to, but they still often do. My female cousin on my dad's side is the only member of my generation of the family who's had kids so far, and she took her husband's name.

I mean, obviously yes. The way he phrased it seemed like based on their customs that was unlikely. To each their own, but it’s 2026, I don’t think we need this to be announced :)

If you look at my family tree, one set of my grandparents had two kids; they each had two kids, who are now in their 30s and 40s, and there's only one child between us. No more are planned. If you expand my tree more, it's just more of the same. Outside of the Gen X ones, most of my second cousins have no children either. There's just 1 other child amongst the millennials and older Gen Z. Two total children out of a dozen people (plus spouses/partners) all in their 30s and 40s.

This reminded me that I've always liked how the big magic bloodline in Anne Rice's vampire novels was tracked on the female side. This wasn't done as some sort of altruistic Girl Power thing; it's just the only way to ensure accuracy. If you follow the male side, on a long enough timeline, you're going to have at least one cheating woman

Well, mitochondrial DNA descends through females, so if you had only sons, your deepest coding would be gone forever after they died.

Mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell!

And the force!!

I knew it would be useful some day

I mean he's a dude so he's not passing on any mitochondrial DNA anyway right?

u/Commercial_Tip4624 3h ago

….you’re 100% correct.

u/Abestar909 11h ago

Does the DNA of mitochondria have anything to do with a person's make up though?

1

u/spartanburt 9h ago

No

u/Abestar909 2h ago

Didn't think so.

u/Jacgaur 12h ago

Yup, woman should be just as important for genetic heritage beyond a simple name. Bloodline isn't name line.

And yet they say kids are (very very slightly) more genetically similar to their fathers.  The "deepest coding" wouldnt be gone, thats just plain wrong.

So?  That doesnt mean the mitochondrial dna overtakes autosomal dna.  You're confusing two very different things.

u/Commercial_Tip4624 3h ago

No, I’m not?

End of my surname as well. 🫡

Been here since before the birth of the US and couldn't squirt out a son.

I’m also the only son of an only son with a very forgotten surname. Name dies with me and my sister. No kids for us.

And I'm the only son of a family of 3 men, of which only my dad had kids. No kids for me either. Strange to think of me ending a bloodline, but I just cannot imagine kids in my life

It's 2026. Women can give their children their last name and even keep their last names after marriage.

2

u/Vantriss 8h ago

You just made me realize my maiden name dies out with my dad and uncle. My aunt clearly isn't passing it on. My uncle never had kids, and my dad only had me, a woman, and I don't plan on having kids. I suppose there ARE other distant branches of our family carrying it on, but our particular branch is going the way of the dinosaurs.

It's fine. I don't want my kids/grandkids, etc fighting in the water wars anyway.

2

u/creamer143 12h ago

At least you have kids.

1

u/Gun_Dork Older Millennial 11h ago

They could keep their name and give you grandsons.
