MacBook Air screen flickering on edges — should I get it checked?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys, I noticed flickering along the edges of my MacBook Air screen while watching a particular series on Netflix. Everything else seems fine, and it only happens with this series.
My 1-year warranty expires next month. Should I get it checked by Apple before it expires, or could this just be a software issue?
Has anyone experienced this?

macOS 27.0.1 is rapidly filling my SSD with System Data

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a serious storage issue on macOS 27.0.1.

My 4940 GB SSD suddenly started filling up with System Data, even though I did not download or create hundreds of gigabytes of files.

df shows the disk being used, but du finds only around 52 GB of actual data. There are no local APFS snapshots.

I suspect Spotlight because .Spotlight-V100 is inaccessible to du, and disabling Spotlight indexing immediately freed hundreds of GB. However, the storage begins growing again afterwards.

Has anyone experienced this? How do I stop whatever is consuming the storage and identify the responsible process?

My first laptop was a gift from my ex. I used it for 7 years…. I think. Then, when it died (ASUS), I bought myself an Ipad Air 5 two years ago. I broke up with my ex few months ago and got myself my first ever laptop aka MacBook 🐸 The first picture is taken after update the MacOS, second pic is the specs of the device.

Suggest me how to take care of this beast of a machine. I am so proud of myself lmao.

New MacBook Air M5 – MagSafe charging fault on arrival

I purchased a new MacBook Air M5 today and immediately upon unboxing it I discovered that the MagSafe charging wasn't working correctly.

I tested it with different power adapters, including 30W and 40W adapters, but the charging repeatedly connected and disconnected or failed to work but Charging via USB-C did work and after some time the MagSafe charging began working again then after an hour it started to disconnect again, has anyone else experienced this or should i take the macbook back and request a replacement?

As this is a brand-new device, I'm concerned about its reliability and ideally i would rather exchange for a new unit rather than risk keeping a potentially faulty MacBook.

Should i get the M5 Air or wait until March 2027 for an M6

Should I get the M5 MacBook Air or wait for the M6?

I’m looking to upgrade from my 2021 Dell G15, and this will be my first MacBook.

My usage is pretty basic: watching movies, studying, and everyday tasks. I don’t do any video editing, coding, or AI training, so I don’t need a particularly powerful machine.

My priorities are:

  1. Display — especially thin bezels and overall aesthetics.
  2. Weight — I want something lightweight and portable.
  3. Battery life — ideally something that lasts all day.

I’m considering the M5 MacBook Air, but the bezel thickness is my biggest concern. I find the design a little unaesthetic, especially compared to the MacBook Pro’s slimmer bezels.

However, getting a Pro just for a better-looking display doesn’t make much sense when I don’t need the extra performance.

So, should I buy the M5 Air now or wait for the M6 Air? Do you think Apple might introduce thinner bezels or a redesigned display with the M6 generation, or is that unlikely?

A few things to clarify:

* I’m specifically looking for a MacBook because I already own an iPhone, AirPods, and an Apple Watch.
* Windows laptops with thinner bezels aren’t an alternative I’m considering.
* The MacBook Neo is out of the question because its bezels are way too thick.
* I’m not considering the M4 MacBook Air or any older models.

I’d appreciate your thoughts, especially from people who follow Apple’s product cycles or have experience with the MacBook Air and Pro displays.

And I’m finally getting around playing Control. Awesome game, runs pretty well on my M5 Pro 15c at lower resolution (render resolution set to 1512 × 982 and a mix of medium-high settings, including RT medium).

Light Use but want it for a long-term: Macbook Neo or Macbook Air M5 help!

Hi everyone!

For context: I have a Macbook Air 2017 13-inch been with me for more than 8 years, it’s still functioning just very slow and it is already significantly dated. It’s been with me through high school, uni and my board examinations, but I feel like it is now time to have it replaced, and now that I’m in the capacity to replace it, I am conflicted between the two models as mentioned above.

What I’ll use the new laptop for: Mainly just for my Masters (Masters in Business Administration), and a professional certification I’d like to pursue. But after that, will just be using it if needed.

What I’m hoping for: I’m hoping that whatever I’ll get, it will last me around the same amount of time that my Macbook Air 2017 lasted me (almost a decade), I find Macbooks as a form of self-investment in my personal endeavors, and I’m not the type of person to replace my Macbook in a short amount of time.

I’m just conflicted between the two because it will be for a much lighter use than how I utilized my 2017 Macbook Air. I already have a well-functioning work laptop that I utilize for my 9-5, I just want a separate device for handling my commitments outside of my full-time job.

Your insights would be greatly appreciated, many thanks! 🤍

Macbook Air m5 (1300$) vs Macbook pro m4 (1450$)

Which one should i get?

As the title says im genuinely confused and lost between the two

The air is 15 inches while the pro is base 14 inches

Is the speaker and the screen enough on the air? Or do i need the pro?

Is 14 inches enough or do i need 15?

Do i need the fane or not?

Iam a programmer coming from 15.6 inches windows laptops i do alot of multitasking and watching videos

Which one us the better deal? Especially that the m5 is about 20% faster than the m4 but with the pro i get better speaker and screen..

MBA 15" m5 or MBP 14" m5

Is a MacBook (Apple Silicon) a good choice for cybersecurity studies? Worried about VMs and x86 images

Hey everyone,

I’m a dual student (CS with a focus on IT security) and I’m currently deciding on a new laptop. I’m seriously considering a MacBook (Air/Pro with an M-series chip), mainly because of battery life, build quality and general performance. Before I commit, I’d like to hear from people who actually work or study in this field.

My main concerns:

  1. VMs and x86 images: A lot of the material I’ll probably get (university lab VMs, OVA/VMDK files, vulnerable machines from VulnHub/HackTheBox, Windows Server/AD labs) are mostly built for x86/x64. Since Apple Silicon is ARM, how bad is that in practice? Is emulation (e.g. in UTM/QEMU) usable, or painfully slow?
  2. Hypervisor choice: Are VMware Fusion, Parallels or UTM good enough for daily use? Any big differences when it comes to nested virtualization, snapshots, or network setups (host-only, internal networks, multiple VMs at once)?
  3. Tooling: Kali, Parallax, Burp, Wireshark, Ghidra, Metasploit etc. mostly run fine on ARM Linux, but are there tools or courses that simply don’t work, or where I’d constantly be fighting the setup? What about Windows-only tools (e.g. for AD, forensics or malware analysis)?
  4. Real-world experience: Did you or your classmates run into problems with a MacBook in labs, CTFs or exams? Did any professors or employers require x86 or Windows specifically?
  5. Alternatives: Would you rather go for a ThinkPad/Windows or Linux laptop with lots of RAM (32 GB+) and run everything natively, or even use a cloud/remote lab setup in addition?

Budget-wise I’d like something that lasts the whole degree and beyond, so I’m happy to pay more upfront if it saves me headaches later.

I’m planning to get the latest M5 MacBook, so which specs would you recommend for this use case (RAM, SSD size, Air vs. Pro)? I’m thinking 32 GB RAM and 1 TB storage, but I’m not sure if that’s overkill or too little for running multiple VMs at once.

Would you buy a MacBook again for this, or would you go a different route? Thanks for any honest experience, good or bad!

I think touchscreen is a cool feature in macOS, but not necessarily for use on a MacBook. Here's why!

As someone who has toyed around with touchscreen laptops, I've never found them useful unless they can be converted to tablet or tent mode. I had a Lenovo X9 several months ago. It was touchscreen and I literally never used it once. In large part, that was due to the fact that it had a traditional laptop form factor with touchpad and keyboard, and so it never really required me to use my fingers to navigate the OS via the screen.

With macOS 27, Apple introduced touchscreen support, likely in preparation for a lineup of touchscreen MacBooks. Again, I never plan on using this feature on a laptop itself. However, I've really enjoyed touchscreen support when using my iPad mini as an extended screen. I will often have YouTube playing in full screen on the iPad as I do productivity work on the laptop itself. I'm able to stop or resume the video by using touch controls on the screen. Sometimes if I have text content on the screen, I'll finger scroll up and down on the tablet to navigate from one end of the page to the other.

All this to say, I think touchscreen is pretty useful when you're using an iPad as an extended monitor. Primarily because the iPad is already intended as a tablet, so touchscreen navigation is intuitive on this device.

Old MacBooks?

Need a new laptop after my 2019 MacBook Air fully gave up. I don’t really wanna spend so much money though. Are there any older models recommend to buy second hand or any to definitely stay away from? Can they still be updated to the newest OS?

I would love a pro just because my air always slowed down a lot with any graphic design work. It also had a massive overheating issue and a super loud fan that I’d like to avoid.

Transparent shell cover for macbook - ok or not?

Hi everyone. I am a new macbook user here. I bought a transparent shell cover for my macbook because i thought it would be better to protect my Macbook Air M5. But i have seen posts saying not to have a cover. But others also say otherwise. So what’s the verdict on this? Thank you

MBP M5 32/1TB vs MBP M5 Pro 24/1TB

Hey guys

A little background -

I am currently on my MBA M1 that has 8 gigs of ram and 256 gb storage and it is causing a lot of problems for me. I do software development work and cybersec related work for bug bounties. On my current laptop I am consuming almost the full 8 gb of ram + 7-8 gigs of swap while I am working.

So I was looking at upgrading to the MacBook Pro and I have narrowed it down to 2 options:

MBP M5 with 32 gigs of ram for ₹2,10,000 ($2169)

and

MBP M5 Pro with 24 gigs of ram for ₹2,20,000 ($2315).

Both have 1TB of Storage.

Can anyone help me decide which one of these options will age the best for my use case as I want to keep the laptop for the next 4-5 years while making sure I am able to do everything I want on the machine.
