Biblical Character of the Month Biblical Character of the Month, October: John the Baptist

October brings us back to the New Testament! REPENT, because our character this month is John the Baptist.

The goal of this series is to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to dive into often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember. But we also want to make this collaborative! I don't want to just ramble my thoughts on these characters at you, I want to urge everyone to write their own post about the character of the month.

So all you need to do is make a new post with your reflection or meditation on John. We do have a special flair ("Biblical Character of the Month") you can give the post, and I will make sure to add it to our collection on this thread.

John appears in all four Gospels, though only Matthew and Mark record his death. He is sometimes called John the Baptist, John the Baptizer, or (my preference) John the Precursor. His most notable story is the Baptism of Christ, but there's a ton you can write about!

A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!

  • What makes John noteworthy as a precursor to Christ?
  • Why is John so hairy and so wild?
  • How do we make sense of Jesus' Baptism? John is "not worthy", yet he Baptizes Jesus. How is that?
  • In what ways is John like Elijah? In what ways are they different?

Reflections from the community:

  1. In the end, John the Baptis's death was due to standing firm on a Bible topic: Unlawful Marriages. Do you have a Bible Topic(s) that you will proudly Defend/Proclaim until the day you die? by u/kyloren1217
  2. Why John Decreases, While Jesus Increases by u/BookBodyBeyond

I've already seen the full video on X and it's horrible.

During his sermon, he was talking about how we have to live moment of our lives because we won't be on this Earth for too long and life can end at any moment as God chooses it. I don't know really what to think about the fact he was talking about life ending unexpectedly when he died unexpectedly in a horrible way. Only God knows why this priest's life was meant to end at this sermon, but it's still sad and the people who were at his sermon must be traumatized by what they saw.

I don't know if a statue of Jesus on a cross killing him is just a tragic coincidence or God sending a message. I know he's in Heaven and I'm sure this priest must have a lot of questions now regarding his death.

Regardless of what God's plan was here. May Father Patricio Alfredo Sanchez Molinari rest in peace. It's sad he had to go this way, but only God know why this tragedy happened.

I don’t see how being unconvinced of Christianity and god as a whole , is a reason to torment someone for all of eternity

Failed

I’m grieving in pain right now, I fail to lust. I tried giving it up but it keeps coming back every single time. Trying to crucify my flesh everyday, it like every month it I get a sense of temptation. I know to ruin away from it but most time you can’t run away from it when your alone all the time. I tried having friends in school but it like I’m a walking ghost in college. A convo with people will be nice instead of being un recognize.
100% im not mad at God at all because i do it to myself. I know im human and it hard to accept that im going to fall most time but i just truly hate porn and lust. I want to change personally, i gave my life to christ knowing he is the way maker. I choose to play with myself instead of going to him. I know he’s not mad at me but just wants me to make better decisions but i can’t make them without God.

I know i’m just yapping a lot but i really do want to change my surroundings. Maybe be around people more. It hard to find people my age that love God, I’m going to change through Christ. I’m going to get up and pick up my cross because it’s not over. I’m going to turn away from my lust, and be around people that love Christ. I rebuke suffering in silence but give it all to God for he is the way maker, I rebuke these negative thoughts, and I will change in the mighty name of Jesus.

If you have some encouragement for me please help me out.

We could be in the end times but not because of people trying to push it and Franklin Graham said God is coming back soon he doesn't know nobody does I do know these next few months with midterms around the corner are going to be dangerous for just about everyone.I do think trump is part of the antichrist that he's going to get people to worship the beast with his version of Christianity we should all be praying for each other I know I need it myself and people with disabilities and people who are other nationalities because I'm scared the most for immigrants. The people in the white house and running the country are demonic.

Can You Join a Christian Community Without Being a Believer ?

Hello everyone!

To begin with, I’m afraid I don’t believe in God, at least not as He is portrayed in religions, for various reasons. However, I’ve been increasingly considering joining a Christian community because I feel that certain values are gradually disappearing from our society and that we sometimes lack a sense of guidance and direction.

I live in Paris, and I remember when the Pope visited and thousands of Christians came to the city. I could recognize them on public transport without even having to speak to them. I really liked the energy they gave off. They were well-dressed, well-groomed, and seemed to have such a positive attitude. They gave the impression of being genuinely good people, although I know that appearances can be deceiving.

I’m often disappointed by people, and I sometimes struggle to find others I genuinely connect with. Yet, I’ve always got along well with the few Christians I’ve had the opportunity to meet, because we shared certain values, particularly kindness.

It’s also possible that my views on the existence of God may change over time. Ever since I was a child, even though I’m not a believer, I’ve had this curious instinct to confide in Him and pray whenever I’m going through difficult times. It brings me a sense of peace and comfort.

Do you think joining a Christian community would be a good idea, even if I’m doing so mainly out of curiosity and still have many questions? Is there a risk that I might be rejected or feel out of place because I don’t fully share the Christian faith yet?

I’d also love to make new friends, but I’m afraid I might feel as though I don’t belong, almost like an impostor among people who are genuine believers.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post all the way through. I look forward to hearing your thoughts ! 😊

If God created Adam as a fully mature human in one day, then he also could’ve created the world in six in a fully mature state which resembles billions of years. Just saying

Question Has anyone actually met a Christian IRL who doesn’t believe in dinosaurs or evolution?

I see these people on the internet who I believe are called young earth creationists who don’t believe in evolution, dinosaurs, climate change (or at least the YEC website I found), that the earth is only 6000 years old and not billions of years old and that EVERYTHING in the bible is to be taken literally. Me personally I believe Genesis is not ment to be taken literally. like for example when God said let there be light, he had a nebula‘a gravity collapse and over time form the sun. Basically the big G said let there be *blank* and the scientific part happened.

Anyways has anyone actually met these people in real life? Cause I only see them on the internet and they feel like grifters. Like how dare they insult the name of the great Spinosaurus! (My favorite dinosaur)

edit: YEC’s and Christians are not the same and you can be a Christian and still believe in science. that’s all

Anyways have a good day bye!

I absolutely loathe them. They are basically a society of Karens dedicated to first world problems. Definitely giving Christians a bad name.

Question What is loving about letting someone be tortured for eternity?

Many Christians tell me it is not loving to forcefully save people who do not want to be saved.

Which led me to think that they believe it is more loving to let people suffer for eternity than to forcefully save them.

Why would an all knowing and all powerful God, have to force people to be saved?

Couldn't God persuade them?

He is all knowing and all powerful, right?

Support Baptists and Methodists

I took a few TheoCompass tests and landed strongly on UMC all three times, which makes sense. I do hold nuanced theological views and views on church governance that encompass both. I am strongly leaning towards believers baptism, but I don’t view it as purely symbolic. I believe that a conscious choice to pursue Christ is sealed by baptism, yet I also believe that we are still to perform social holiness.

I appreciate the structure of having larger church bodies to adhere to, but I like the idea of congregations of like minded people who do not necessarily have to adhere to set structures. I’m in the UK, and I know that Baptists are mostly in the USA, and the SBC is a legacy is pro slavery which is a big no no, but Northern Baptists include people like MLK.

I love the Wesleyan view on scripture, but I place less importance on Tradition. I’m not yet baptized and I’m 22. While it would be nice to be a part of a wider established family like the UMC, and most of my theology is aligned with it, I do still have Baptist leaning views on church governance and believers baptism.
