We now have a community chat!

Glory to Jesus Christ!

We have set up a new general chat channel for r/EasternCatholic. This chat is a place where you can ask quick questions, chat informally about Eastern Catholic topics, share experiences and news, and connect with other members of the community.

As always, we expect respectful, charitable conversations in line with the sub's rules. We will be more lenient with Rule #1 in the chat (content must be relevant to Eastern Catholic theology, worship, and/or practice) - so long as the chat doesn't go off the rails, conversation about different aspects of Christianity, or in some cases even non-Christian topics, will be permitted.

Join the General chat here

We hope you enjoy the chat and continue to frequent r/EasternCatholic.

God bless,

Other/Unspecified Update on "Map of Traditional Greek Catholic Monasteries and Sketes"

- Added more monasteries (1 Melkite, 1 Hungarian, and couple Ukrainian monasteries).

- Deleted 1 now sadly closed Ukrainian monastery.

- Added bi-ritual monasteries of Chevetogne and Niederaltaich

- Monasteries are now "separated" by (M) - monasteries for man, and (W) - monasteries for woman

If you have any suggestions on what to add/edit, or you have found traditional Byzantine Catholic monastery that is not on the map, feel free to dm me or write your suggestions here.

Lives of the Saints ☦️ Blessed Nicholas Charnetsky celebrating the divine liturgy at the site of the future Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (1937). He would be later arrested by the Soviet authorities enduring 30 prisons and 600 hrs of interrogation and torture for not denouncing union with Rome

General Eastern Catholicism Question Our Father

Hey guys, what’re your thoughts on using the Our Father in a similar manner to the Jesus prayer, like Pater Noster beads? The repetitive nature and emptying your mind of thoughts and images.

Koliva in the Ruthenian tradition

How is koliva used in the Ruthenian tradition? My parish has had koliva to commemorate All Souls Saturdays, but I have also had a priest tell me it isn't typically done in the Ruthenian church. He said it is more of a Greek thing and in the Slavic world it isn't typical to use food to commemorate the dead.

Theology & Liturgy The two natures of Christ and human deification

The heart of revelation, the heart of the Christian faith, is the incarnation and what it reveals to us about God and about God’s desire for us – the desire that we are raised up, that is, deified by Christ, so that we can join in and participate in the divine life:

ܢܸܫܬܲܒܲܚ ܝܼܫܘܿܥ ܡܫܝܼܚܵܐ

This year is the 10th Anniversary since our Syro-Malabar Eparchy was established in Great Britain. 10 years have passed since our Eparch, Mar Joseph Srampickal, was ordained a bishop in Deepdale Stadium, Preston, UK.

The liturgy and celebrations on the 17th of October 2026 were led by His Eminence, Mar George Cardinal Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery of Interreligious Dialogue, in the benign presence of Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía, the apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain. Concelebrating was Mar Joseph Srampickal, the Head of the Eparchy of Great Britain, along with other archbishops and bishops of both Syro-Malabar and Latin rites.

May God Bless You All.

News Eparchy of the Holy Family (UGCC) 2026 Pilgrimage to Walsingham

Just thought I should share this!

On Saturday, 17th October 2026, the yearly Walsingham pilgrimage was undertaken by the Eparchy of the Holy Family (UGCC). Parishes from across England came to represent themselves (though the Manchester and London parishes made up the vast majority).

The day began with a moleben service, followed by a two-hour procession (with rosary-recitation & confession) from the Church of the Annunciation to the National Shrine & Basilica, ending with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy led by Bp. Kenneth (Nowakowski). Despite the rain, turnout was high, and plenty of petitions were brought to the Slipper Chapel!

I understand this subreddit is not always active (even with the same question-posts), so I hope this can offer a reason to further share local activities. Please keep the Church in Britain in your prayers, particularly to the most-holy Mother of God! 🙏

General Eastern Catholicism Question What kind of incense does your church use, or what do you like personally?

Post image

Due to my parish being understaffed, I was „promoted” and apparently I cense now. The trouble is, the incense that we have in the chapel is… not exactly very good. Any recomendations?

Thurible (and sleeve) pic for attention lol

Other/Unspecified The Our Father and Hail Mary in Croatian 🇭🇷☦️

I’m Eastern Catholic, and Croatian is one of my native languages. I wanted to share the Our Father and Hail Mary in Croatian, a language that is part of my heritage.

Oče naš (Our Father)

Oče naš, koji jesi na nebesima,

sveti se ime Tvoje,

dođi kraljevstvo Tvoje,

budi volja Tvoja,

kako na nebu tako i na zemlji.

Kruh naš svagdanji daj nam danas,

i otpusti nam duge naše,

kako i mi otpuštamo dužnicima našim,

i ne uvedi nas u napast,

nego izbavi nas od zla. Amen.

Zdravo Marijo (Hail Mary)

Zdravo Marijo, milosti puna,

Gospodin s Tobom,

blagoslovljena Ti među ženama,

i blagoslovljen plod utrobe Tvoje, Isus.

Sveta Marijo, Majko Božja,

moli za nas grešnike,

sada i na času smrti naše. Amen.

I love how these prayers connect faith, language, and heritage. Are there any other Eastern Catholics here who pray in Croatian or another ancestral language? I’d love to hear about your traditions. ☦️

I was born and raised Catholic in the regular Western rite. I have been fascinated with the Byzantine Empire for a while and would like to attend a Byzantine Catholic service. I live in the Denver area and we do have a Byzantine church.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share my conversation with Michael Thomas from the Catholic Land Movement.

We dive deep into practical alternatives to modern consumerism, the principles of distributism, and what it actually takes to build a grounded, land-based lifestyle today.

Would love to hear your thoughts on local economy and distributist ideas in practice!

Theology & Liturgy The Parable of the Sower and the Word Within

When Jesus described the parable of the sower as indicating the way the Word of God is seeded across the world, what does he mean by “Word of God”?

General Eastern Catholicism Question Can the children of one rite be baptized and chrismated by a priest from another rite?

For example: can a Ukrainian Catholic priest baptize and chrismate the children of say a Melkite Catholic, and does the same for other sacraments like crowning?

General Eastern Catholicism Question Attending Mass at an ACOA

For my Chaldean or any eastern catholic church brothers and sisters,

I'm pretty sure Rome outlines that Catholics shouldn't receive the sacraments from a schismatic church, such as Orthodox or Protestant (or not, please correct me if im wrong). Do any Chaldeans often attend an Assyrian Church of the East mass because our churches our so similar? Is it permissible in our church to attend their mass and to receive the Eucharist or any other sacrament? Is it valid? I'm very curious if Chaldeans or other eastern rites know about this.

Other/Unspecified How to “become” Eastern Catholic for kids

Hello I am a Roman Catholic of the latin rite, and my fiancé is Eastern Orthodox. With the right approvals of bishops we will marry in an Orthodox church, and probably baptise our future kids in the orthodox church because my wife has to make a promise. However since I am a Catholic we are also considering raising our kids Catholic, and since my fiancé is Eastern we are considering Eastern Catholicism for our family.

However I wonder how this will work? I know unlike the Roman Catholics tradition of preparing kids for first communion around their 7th birthday the East just gives the Eucharist to all baptised children. So can I technically just start taking my future kids to an Eastern Catholic church, tell them they are Eastern Catholics despite baptised Orthodox and just have them take the eucharist at the eastern catholic church every week?

And what about me and my fiancé? Maybe later the whole family will become eastern catholic. Can I as a baptised Roman and she as a baptised Orthodox just start calling ourselves Eastern Catholic? I know I can participate in the liturgy and take the Eucharist because I am a Catholic but what about actually transferring rites and what about my Orthodox fiance?
