[Subreddit Business] Clarifications on our Watsonian/Doylist rule, general questions, and r/WhatIfFiction

Hi guys,

If you're new, welcome to r/AskScienceFiction, and if you're a returning user, welcome back! This subreddit is designed to be like the r/AskScience subreddit, but for fictional universes, and with all questions and answers written from a Watsonian perspective. That is to say, the questions and answers should be based on the in-universe information, rules, and logic of the fictional work. All fictional works are welcome here, not just sci-fi.

Lately we've been seeing some confusion over what counts as Watsonian, what counts as Doylist, what sort of questions would be off-topic on this subreddit, and what sort of answers are allowed. This stickied post is meant to address such uncertainties and clear things up.

1) Watsonian vs Doylist

The term "Watsonian" means based on the in-universe information, rules, and logic of the fictional work. In contrast, "Doylist" means discussions based on out-of-universe considerations. So, for example, if someone asked, "Why didn't the Fellowship ride the Eagles to Mordor?", a possible Watsonian answer would be, "The Eagles are a proud and noble race, they are not a taxi service." Whereas a rule-breaking Doylist answer might be something like, "Because then the story would be over in ten minutes, and that'd be boring."

We should note that answering in a Watsonian fashion does not necessarily mean that we should pretend that these works are all real, or that we should ignore the fact that they are movies or shows or books or games, or that the creators' statements on the nature of these works should be disregarded.

To give an example, if someone asked, "How powerful would Darth Vader have been if he never got burned?", we can quote George Lucas:

"Anakin, as Skywalker, as a human being, was going to be extremely powerful, but he ended up losing his arms and a leg and became partly a robot. So a lot of his ability to use the Force, a lot of his powers, are curbed at this point, because, as a living form, there’s not that much of him left. So his ability to be twice as good as the Emperor disappeared, and now he’s maybe 20 percent less than the Emperor."

In such a case, "according to George Lucas, he would've been around twice as powerful as the Emperor" would be a perfectly acceptable Watsonian answer, because Lucas is also speaking from a Watsonian perspective.

Whereas if someone associated with the creation of Star Wars had said something like, "He'd be as powerful as we need him to be to make the story interesting", this would be a Doylist answer because it's based on out-of-universe reasoning. It would not be an acceptable answer on this subreddit even though it is also a quote from the creators of the fictional work.

2) General questions

General questions often do not have a meaningful Watsonian answer, because it frequently boils down to "whatever the author decides". For instance, if someone asked, "How does FTL space travel work?", the answer would vary widely with universe and author intent; how FTL works in Star Trek differs from how it works in Star Wars, which differs from how it works in Dune, which differs from how it works in Mass Effect, which differs from how it works in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, etc. General questions like this, in which the answer just boils down to "whatever the author wants", will be removed.

There are some general questions that can have meaningful Watsonian answers, though. For example, questions that are asking for specific examples of things can be given Watsonian answers. "Which superheroes have broken their no-kill rules?" or "Which fictional wars have had the highest casualty counts?" are examples of general questions that can be answered in a Watsonian way, because commenters can pull up specific in-universe information.

We address general questions on a case-by-case basis, so if you feel a question is too general to answer in a Watsonian way, please report the question and the mod team will review it.

3) r/WhatIfFiction

We want questions and answers here to be based on in-universe information and reasonable deductions that can be made from them. Questions that are too open-ended to give meaningful Watsonian answers should go on our sister subreddit, r/WhatIfFiction, which accepts a broader range of hypothetical questions and answers. Examples of questions that should go on r/WhatIfFiction include:

  • "What if Tony Stark had been killed by the Ten Rings at the beginning of Iron Man? How would this change the MCU?" This question would be fun to speculate about, but the ripple effect from this one change would be too widespread to give a meaningful Watsonian answer, so this should go on r/WhatIfFiction.
  • "What would (X character) from the (X universe) think if he was transported to (Y universe)?" Speculating about what characters would think or do if they were isekai'd to another universe can be fun, but since such crossover questions often involve wildly different settings and in-universe rules, the answers would be purely speculative and not meaningfully Watsonian, so such questions belong on r/WhatIfFiction.

We should note, though, that some hypothetical questions or crossover questions can have meaningful Watsonian answers. For example, if someone asked, "Can a Star Wars lightsaber cut through Captain America's shield?", we can actually say "Quite possibly yes, because vibranium's canonical melting point is 5,475 degrees Fahrenheit, while lightsabers are sticks of plasma, and plasma's temperature is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit or more." This answer is meaningfully Watsonian because it involves a deduction using specific and canonical in-universe information, and is not simply purely speculative.

4) Reporting rule-breaking posts and comments

The r/AskScienceFiction mod team always endeavors to keep the subreddit on-topic and remove rule-breaking content as soon as possible, but because we're all volunteers with day jobs, sometimes things will escape our notice. Therefore, it'd be a great help if you, our users, could report rule-breaking posts or comments when you see them. This will bring the issue to the mod team's attention and allow us to review it as soon as we can.

[DC] Why isn't Clayface on the same level as Plastic Man?

Basil Karlo (or BTAS Matt Hagen) main Clayface I mean. Plastic Man is deemed as omega levels of broken because of the control over his own body down to the last molecule and the level of shapeshifting. Same thing with heroes like Metamorpho with their shapeshifting. So why isn't Clayface (Basil Karlo, the strongest one) deemed or revered to be on the same level as Plastic Man if they can do the same thing with the same ruleset?

[Guardians Of The Galaxy] How would Peter have reacted had Ronan taken him up on his dance off request?

I know it was just a distraction tactic, but let's say Ronan smiled, said that he was the best dancer on all of Hala, and started busting moves that were genuinely impressive?

[Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk] how do extremely chromed out men and women reproduce?

I imagine it’s a bit easier for men than women

Like, do they rely on sperm donations? External wombs? Is there a way to handle the complications that may arise from hormonal cycles or pregnancies interacting with cyberware?

Does cyberware affect male fertility?

[johnwick] how does the high table stay secret in the age of social media?

I was rewatching John Wick and realized how weird it is that nobody seems to expose the high table. There are shootouts in public places, yet somehow no viral videos or major news stories of the shoot outs. Are they paying people to cover everything up, or does everyone in that world just pretend nothing happened?

[GI: JOE: ARAH] Just what is General Hawk thinking?

• Upvotes

He has a desert trooper, Dusty assigned to the Joe's space station. He has Mutt a K9 officer flying a fighter jet, and allows Junkyard a dog to fly along with him. Hell even the dog was on the space station. He has had Iceberg an artic trooper, wearing heavy insulated white artic gear help to storm a Cobra base on a jungle island.

He has his troops assigned in such a illogical manner.

I know he is magical in nature, but what the hell is his body made of if it had a real world counterpart that can match the cartoonish body of Majin Buu? And is there a limit to his regeneration?

[Marvel/DC] If Lex Luthor lived in the Marvel universe, which superhero would he pick to hyperfocus on?

I'm tempted to suggest Thor, since here is an extremely powerful being... who outright calls himself a god. Which Luthor keeps accusing Superman of seeing himself as.

Tony Stark might also be a business rival. Or he'd become the world's biggest enemy of mutant rights. Or maybe Lex would skip the heroes altogether and zero in on Doctor Doom.

[Project Hail Mary] What type of conditions would allow Rocky's species to evolve mobility without bilateral symmetry?

He's not a sessile organism - he can move fairly quickly - so there was some competitive advantage for that at some point in his species' evolutionary history. Why wasn't it more advantageous for proto-Rockys with symmetrical body plans?

[LOVECRAFT/ELDRITCH BEINGS] Why are eldritch beings earthquakes to our house minds

Maybe I am crazy but to understand something that does not exist we all must be a bit crazy so here it goes.

I think eldritch beings are not entities above us but bellow us. Think of the human mind as a house, the floor is the logic of our world being the base of everything we are, the walls our reason being able to ignore everything that we believe that is not true. the door is our way accepting new knowledge that does not conflict with our reason (walls).

Now when we think of an eldritch being, we think of a being so much greater than us that we cannot comprehend, but I don’t think that’s it because us humans have had things that we weren’t able to comprehend before and even beings that we didn’t truly understand of control (if we assume gods and spirits were real), I believe that eldritch beings are beyond the logic of our world but not because they live in a higher dimension but because they live below the base of all dimensions way past the floor of our house that is the logic of our world. If we view an interaction of an eldritch being as a natural phenomenon I think we should compare it to a earthquake or a rift, making our whole house tremble making the furniture that is our memories and thought shift and break, making the walls of our reason crack and let in knowledge that our brain cannot simply accept and even make the floor of our house crumble and making us fall outside our own mind in a place completely indescribable not because we haven’t been there before but because it’s simply outside of the understanding of our mind.

As for the people that sometimes survives this rare hypothetical encounters but they change irredeemably I believe this can be explained by this analogy too: a house can be repaired, if the walls break it can be patched, if the furniture shifts, breaks or disappears it can be moved back, repaired or even substituted and a floor that has crumbled down to something deeper it can be rebuilder and make the walls taller to reach the place of the previous house. But even if you do that it levees scars, the floor has scratches of the furniture being moved of the floor, the repaired objects have cracks, the now objects are not exactly the same (not as old or not with the same wear and tear), the walls show were they cracked with newer paint or weaker/stronger parts and if the floor came down the hose dimensions will be completely new

[Marvel Comics] Has anyone used Sentinels for purposes outside of hunting mutants (e.g. fighting planetary invasions)?

Building giant robots to hunt mutants feels like a mismatched solution, since the "mutant threat" is embedded in existing human society rather than open warfare (those kind of problems are better handled with an "Inquisition"-style organization). However, giant robots are a perfect answer to the various threats that Earth faces on a regular basis. Has anyone ever used Sentinels in this capacity?

[Disney's The Jungle Book] What's the in-universe reason why Mowgli feels the need to wear a loincloth despite being raised by animals?

In the original books, Mowgli was stark naked in the jungle as animals have no concept of modesty. Disney's version, due to being a visual medium, had to censor that by having him wear a makeshift red langot-like loincloth. But what is the in-universe reason why he would feel the need to cover himself if he hasn't had any contact with mankind and therefore has no idea what clothes are for?

[Marvel] [DC] How does afterlife work with the multiverse

Like what I mean is does heaven and hell exist outside the multiverse?

Do all variants of the characters go to the same hell or heaven like are all the variants judged differently or are all of them considered to e same, like for example if god were to judge Spider Man does he get counted as one across the multiverse with each different version of him in every universe or are all the different versions of him seen as individuals?

And if heaven and hell do exist outside of the multiverse then how does it work for a specific DC Character? DC has a superhero called Zauriel who is an angel from heaven where DC’s god is (The Presence) who created DC so like are there multiple versions of Zauriel for each universe or is there only one Zauriel
