Welcome to the r/vns "What are you reading?" thread!
The intended purpose of this thread is to provide a weekly space to chat about whatever VN you've been reading lately. When talking about plot points, use spoiler tags liberally. If you have any doubts about whether you should spoiler something or not, use a spoiler tag for good measure. Use this markdown for spoilers: (>!hidden spoilery text!<) which shows up as hidden spoilery text. If you want to discuss spoilers for another VN as well, please make sure to mention that your spoiler tag covers another VN aside from the primary one your post is about.
In order for your post to be properly noticed for the archive, please add the VNDB page of whichever title you're talking about in your post. The archive can be found here!
So, with all that out of the way...
What are you reading?

I recently finished YOU and ME and HER, and honestly, I feel so empty now that it's over. I loved this game so much that it's hard to put into words. I got so attached to the experience, and knowing that I've finally reached the end makes me feel weirdly sad. I just wish I could experience it all over again for the first time.
The thing is, this isn't the first time this has happened to me. Every visual novel I've played has eventually become an obsession for me. Doki Doki Literature Club!, all the Danganronpa games, NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD, and now YOU and ME and HER. Whenever I get into one of these games, I end up thinking about it constantly, getting attached to the characters, looking up more content, and wanting to learn everything about it. I genuinely love these games so much, and I don't think I've ever gotten this attached to any other type of game.
Now I'm left with that empty feeling you get when you finish something you really love, and I NEED something new to obsess over lmao.
So please, recommend me your favorite visual novels! I want something that will completely suck me in, make me care about its characters, leave me thinking about it long after I finish it, and maybe even emotionally destroy me a little.
I want to fall in love with another story. I want another obsession. I just want to experience that feeling again.
Thank you!!

Heyo everyone! Weâre a five-man indie team from Taiwan called PHOSEPO and this here is our latest project, Psycho-Sleuth.
The story is about 13 people who are trapped in a death game organized by the insidious Li Cult. The prize for winning? Why, no less than the chance to ascend to Godhood⌠if they can get away with murder most foul!
However, none of the characters participating in this deadly trial are exactly normal, not by a long stretch. For example, one witness cannot lie even if they wanted to, while another has spatial neglect and cannot see the whole left section of the room. A third cannot distinguish between different faces. A fourth believes she is dead⌠and so on, you get the idea (Iâm not giving them all away here, that would ruin the fun)
The catch here is that these conditions spread to everyone around them, making for a thrilling and oftentimes darkly comedic (and sometimes simply terrifying) game of cat and mouse. Trust becomes complicated when even the most sincere witness can be wrong, while someone with malicious intentions might reveal the truth without realizing it.
Be that as it may, your duty is to investigate the murders, work out what each witness could actually perceive, then pick apart their testimony in timed debates. If you've played any of the Ace Attorney games, the gameplay should already feel somewhat familiar to you.
Our demo is on Steam right now, covering Chapter 1 and the start of Chapter 2:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3753800/PsychoSleuth_Demo/
The full game will launch on November 5!
Also, feel free to ask any more specific questions you might have about our game, Iâll stick around for a while and answer what I can.

I remember this visual novel where the premise is ur a guy who lived with ur aunt and step sister in a way because ur dad died and left h with debt and ur aunt took you in.
U start the game where u basically revive? Regress or whatever into the past with ur future memories intact and u basically lock in and do jobs and use ur future knowledge to make everything better for u and ur family in this life
There are a lot of characters I can remember
"Milf" aunt
White haired best friend with a sis complex
Tanned Tomboy gf
Black buff guy with an afro who trains u in the park
Tsundere step sis with red/pink hair
Ramen guy where u clean a toilet bowl and eat ramen off of it
Daughter of ramen guy
A nerd who likes the sister of the white haired best friend
I have all this info but I can't seem to find it anybody have đ

Trying to launch the visual novel but get this error. Happens in a VM too for what it matters (locale set to Japanese too). Tried installing DirectX from WineTricks, but same thing.
Tried Heroic Launcher on Linux and Windows VM.
Edit: Apparently 7zip messes up (some? all?) filenames during extraction, that is, it makes them all uppercase letters, which then tends to make the game not launch. So mounting the game image works.

This is a romance focused Yuri VN where you get caught in a love triangle with your imaginary friends who suddenly became real!
Features:
â˘2 main routes, one for Robin and one for Venus, along with a secret 3rd route.
â˘Fully voiced characters and beautiful art, a 100% human made experience.
â˘Lots of Yuri and girl kissing!
Do you guys know any VN composers who speak English at a good level?

I feel like this is a pretty controversial opinion in the VN community, but I honestly dont think the fact that a visual novel is the original source material automatically makes it better than its anime adaptation.
Sometimes I actually prefer the anime.
A good example for me is Clannad. I personally enjoyed the anime more than the VN. I thought the pacing was much better, the visuals were more appealing, and I appreciated that the adaptation cut down on a lot of the slice of life content. That's just ä something I dont particularly enjoy.
Or Steins Gate, similar reasons to Clannad.
And I feel like anime adaptations of VNs sometimes get criticized almost automatically simply because they're adaptations. There is this narrative of "the VN is the real experience, the anime is just a butchered version" even when the anime might genuinely be better sometimes.
I sometimes get the impression that people overhate adaptations because liking the original feels more "cultured" or gives them a sense of feeling more niche. Obviously that's not everyone, but I definitely feel like this attitude exists.
That said, I'm definitely not saying VNs are always better either.
There are plenty of cases where the VN absolutely wins.
Umineko is probably the biggest example for me. The anime adaptation is way too rushed, especially considering how much content and characterization had to be cut.
And White Album 2 is another one where I strongly prefer the VN.
Or the Kara no Shoujo "adaptation" which is basically just a short hentai.
Im not trying to argue "anime adaptations are better than VNs." My point is more that I think we should judge them as their own works instead of automatically assuming that the original source is superior.
Sometimes an adaptation genuinely improves the experience for certain people.
What are some VNs where you actually prefer the anime adaptation?

Hello! I have been so excited working on this project. I feel it is turning out very well and the game is btw 100% free. Full disclosure: The game is vibe coded (coding by ai) but it does feature a tremendous amount of my own writing and story. It has an innovative conversation cube system that I would love to hear your feedback on. You are attempting to adopt cute aliens whom you will send on prospecting missions. I am wondering what other kinds of elements I could incorporate that people would enjoy. This is going to be a long term project for me after all.
We have 3 aliens so far and I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether you enjoy this writing style and what you feel could use improvement. Anything that you like and dislike. I am adding new features every week and your game saves automatically. Please let me know what you think! I've never had more fun my life and being able to create my own visual novels with this technology and finally put my creativity to use is really inspiring.
