I received my Dell UltraSharp U4025QW from Amazon yesterday. Great monitor by I'm concerned by possible defects in the panel. The seller was Woot.
The box appeared to be factory-sealed when I opened it. The monitor was wrapped in protective material, but there was no protective peel-off film on the screen itself. I’m not sure whether Dell does this. I know Samsung does.
After unboxing it, I noticed streaks on the screen, including a fairly noticeable smudge or blemish near the middle. There were also several tiny spots across the screen that looked like dried cleaning spray, almost as if someone had tried to clean it before packaging it.
I can’t say for certain whether the monitor was previously used, and I don’t recall seeing a screen like this when unboxing a new monitor. I cleaned the screen with monitor-safe screen cleaner, which removed the spotted residue, but the streak or blemish in the middle remains.
Interestingly, I can’t see any of these imperfections when the monitor is turned on and displaying an image. I also ran a dead-pixel test and didn’t find any dead pixels. The display itself looks fine during normal use.
For those who own this monitor or have experience with Dell LCD panels:
- Is it normal for a new monitor to have visible streaks or smudges on the screen when it’s turned off?
- If the blemish isn’t visible when the display is on, would you keep the monitor or return it while I’m still within the return window?
Part of my dilemma is that I know if I ever decide to sell this monitor (I upgrade my electronics frequently, I would have to disclose the screen imperfection. The monitor this one is replacing has a similar issue that never really bothered me. Now, though, I’m wondering whether that monitor had the same imperfection when I originally purchased it and I simply never noticed it, or whether it developed over time.
I’d appreciate any feedback. I’m trying to decide whether this is normal and worth living with or whether I should exchange it while I still can.
