Rant/Misc. Thank you.
I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to this community and the resources people post here. My husband was on T for about 4 years paying privately (first gel, then nebido), then couldn't afford it for about a year (and appointments kept being delayed or messed up during that last year because of covid), and then was just overwhelmed with how much it would cost and how complicated it would be to start back up again so has been off of it for about 5 years.
He kept all the permanent changes obviously, and because he was on nebido before, it faded out of his system slowly enough that I think neither of us really realised how much not having access was affecting him. I could see he wasn't fully happy, but he didn't want to deal with the bureaucracy and effort of going through all the inital stuff again (plus some internalised shame from having let it lapse for so long and not wanting to answer a bunch of invasive questions about why), and the NHS waitlists are absurd.
About a month ago, I asked him if he'd mind if I did some research into what the exact process would be to get him back on testosterone. He said sure, and yeah, I was very quickly reminded just how bleak it seems (especially here in the uk). Out of curiosity I looked into diy to see if it would actually be feasible before presenting it to him as an option, found this sub and resources like https://diyhrt.info/, and realised it might be a decent solution for now. Did even more research and realised that holy shit the dosing schedules he was on before fucking sucked (how the fuck is the go to adjustment if your levels aren't low enough at trough to increase the time between injections and not just... lower the fucking dose and keep the same frequency? Does that not just create a massive hormonal roller coaster where the peaks are still way too high but then you just make the troughs suck more? I distinctly remember him feeling low in the last few weeks before his injection every 14 weeks before, and now that I know a bit more I'm kind of furious about it). Anyway, I showed him all my research both diy and non diy, and within like 3 days he started diy.
Holy shit he's so much happier. It's been about 3 weeks since he started on enanthate (50mg twice a week for a total of 100mg/week - he also decided to do a loading schedule where he did 1.5x dose for 1 week, then 1.25x dose for 1 week, then regular dose from there. He chose to do that because he's been on T before and wanted to get back to levels he already knows make him feel better as fast as possible. Disclaimer that that's definitely not necessary but I think it worked well for his specific situation, and splitting the dose into two injections a week means the larger loading dose was hopefully less likely to push him into dangerous peaks) and oh my god it's just... thank you. He feels more emotionally stable, he's got actual energy again, and it's just fucking amazing seeing him doing so much better in every single way. We found some old pictures recently and we were both shocked because neither of us had realised how much body hair he'd lost and how much his fat distribution had changed in the years not on T since it happened so slowly, and instead of feeling shitty about what he lost he's excited and looking forward to seeing it come back. Like, there's this hope and excitement for the future that I haven't seen in him for years and it's just overwhelmingly incredible to see.
Still waiting to test levels at 3 months and see if this dose is right, though I did a lot of looking through his old paperwork and dosages and converting testosterone concentrations between nebido and enanthate to figure it out (and then he was like eh fuck it let's round up by 10mg and go for max recommended 100mg/week since his levels never were quite what he would have wanted them to be, so we'll see if that needs adjusting down once he gets a blood test 😂), but I just really wanted to let people here know how much I appreciate all the resources and information and patience answering questions in threads and comments, being able to find all of that has changed his life for the better. He's given me permission to post about his physical and mental changes and levels over time here to contribute to the wider information pool, so I'll be back to update in two and a bit months!
