Business Spotify is asking Family plan members to scan a QR code to prove they live with the account owner
https://www.techspot.com/news/114285-spotify-thinks-rotating-qr-codes-stop-family-plan.html535
u/invyros 6h ago
Once notified, members have seven days to complete the QR check. Missing that window or being unable to complete verification carries a lengthy restriction: members won't be able to join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
Streaming services continue to shit all over their users.

u/onethreehill 6h ago
So if you go on holiday without the rest of your family you would be banned for a year?
150
u/circemyqueen 5h ago
Yeah and same for if one of the adults works in an industry that requires them to be away for longer time periods? Guess you're not allowed on the family plan anymore then either
→ More replies (3)113
u/footpole 5h ago
My kid was just on a week long school trip. Is that not allowed? Am I allowed to travel for business without my whole family being put in purgatory for a year?
27
u/bamdaraddness 3h ago
Netflix also does this. They monitor the number of one time codes you get when they detect a location change and, if you exceed whatever the number they have deemed in whatever timeframe, pay for an extra user or you’re banned.
So people who travel for work. Or kids with 2 households. College kids. You’re fucked.
→ More replies (3)11
u/FrozenPizza07 3h ago
I had netflix constantly ask for codes in my normal residence but never on holidays which just annoys tf out of me
89
u/healthycord 5h ago
If this happens I will never use Spotify again. I’m on a family plan with my brothers, my wife, and my parents. We are a FAMILY even though we do not live in the same household. They need to rename it to household plan if they’re gonna fuck over everyone.
Such BS. Sailing the high seas is not what I want to do, but unfortunately it’s what I’m getting pushed towards.
18
6
u/ImCaffeinated_Chris 2h ago
This is my thought as well. If this happens one single time to my family, I'm exporting all our playlists and cancelling the service. And we use it all the time. This is the literal straw that breaks the camels back.

12
u/yukumizu 4h ago
Lmao…The fuck anybody would stay with Spotify if they ban you from a family or duo plan 🤣
Who’s the ‘genius’ who came up with this?
16
u/cainhurstcat 4h ago
So why not just have a video call holding the code in front of the cam?
10
u/ian9outof10 3h ago
Do they block screenshots? I’m thinking this sounds super easy to defeat.
3
u/PocketGddess 2h ago
Two phones solves that problem if they do try to block screenshots. I’ve got one for work and one for personal use. Or use the webcam on your laptop or tablet.
So many options. . . all this sort of thing does is inconvenience folks, it certainly doesn’t “prove” anything.

Welcome to the endgame of profits over people. They've hooked just about everyone they're gonna hook, as long as number keeps going up, they're ok with focusing on "easy" customers that just shut up and pay, and leave the rest behind.

u/Deleukstenaamisbezet 6h ago
Tip: As far as I know, you can also scan the QR code through a video call. I tested it with two of my friends who live on the other side of the country, and it was accepted!
31
u/Wonderful_Emu_6483 3h ago
How long is the verification good for though? When Disney booted me from my parents account it was asking for verification every day. Eventually I just gave up making my dad send me the code and resorted to Yarrlist
18
u/KonataYumi 3h ago
When I had the Disney account, I just automatically forward the verification code to my dad as a filter in my email

Spotify pays the exact amount asked of them by the record labels that they license the music from. It's the record labels that avoid paying the artists
12
u/denom_chicken 5h ago
Why ask for more when the bare minimum exists
3
u/PhAnToM444 3h ago
I mean yeah, Spotify signs a contract with the label for the right to stream music for $X and then pays $X
Are you arguing they should like… throw in more just for fun? That’s not how contracts work lol
3
u/denom_chicken 3h ago
Whoever is working on behalf of the artists shouldn’t have settled for abysmal compensation.
And for those independent artists they’re at the whim of Spotify
→ More replies (1)24
u/ItsCalledDayTwa 5h ago
why do some streaming services pay artists better?
18
u/webternet 5h ago
To get more artists on and get more streamers
5
u/ItsCalledDayTwa 5h ago
I don't think that answers my question in response to the comment I asked if under.
4
u/DiscountSensitive574 3h ago
This is a misguided stat. Spotify pays less per stream because they have a free tier, what you should look at is what they pay as a percent of total revenue, but of course apple isnt gonna disclose how much their services make so they make a big deal out of the per stream number.
The shitty thing about Spotify is that they converted everyone to an audiobook plus music plan, and negotiated lower rates for those plans but I doubt anyone relies on Spotify for audiobooks.
16
u/catf1sh1 5h ago
Streaming services don't generate their own content. All of the content on Spotify has to come from somewhere else. Either through major record labels, independent labels, or directly from the artists themselves.
Unless you are truly unsigned to any label - major or independent - you sign a contract that states what your splits will be from a variety of income sources. It used to be that the labels only got a cut from your record sales, but since the invention of the 360 deal, labels are now taking cuts out of all revenue generated by an artist. This includes merchandise, touring and streaming revenue.
Every label and every streaming service negotiates what it will cost to license and stream the content. They could be identical splits or they could be different. It's up to how well each party negotiates, and then it's how well the artists themselves negotiate for how much they get paid per stream.
7
u/FlashbackJon 3h ago
ALTHOUGH there is a theory that these month-old AI slop artists (with obviously bot-boosted accounts) showing up on official Spotify-curated playlists are being generated by Spotify to avoid having to pay ANY other party for content.
Reminder that Daniel Ek didn't care what the distribution platform he made was for: he was just making a version of uTorrent he could inject ads into.
→ More replies (1)2
u/sodapop14 4h ago
It’s what the record label negotiates with the platforms. My brother-in-law is in a signed band. They get nothing from any streaming service until the record label makes the money back. Then they get 70% of the streaming sales once they pay back recording expenses and the upfront money for signing with them. Then 13 years later they get 100% ownership back of their music.
22
u/pedanticPandaPoo 5h ago
Not that I'm justifying either side, but they claim to pay out half of the revenue to artists. If they're making peanuts now, would 2 peanuts actually change the narrative?
Before I would buy a CD and the record label would get an obscene cut. But if I were to pay cd prices for the content I consume, I'd be back on free radio.
Since they make more money on tours, personally I think the vitriol would be best directed at ticketmaster and livenation if we want to compensate music artists.
4
u/JonathanWisconsin 3h ago
I have a bridge to sell you if you think they actually pay artists out 50/50.
→ More replies (1)3
u/MistahFinch 4h ago
Now how's that work for the artists not on labels still being paid poorly?
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/TSPhoenix 37m ago
The record labels were given early Spotify shares creating a conflict of interest when negotiating royalty rates.
In theory labels had huge bargaining power to negotiate better rates for artists as Spotify was dead in the water without the big labels. But doing that would lower Spotify's value, lowering the value of shares the labels now held, so they intentionally went with low royalty rates to increase the value of the shares they held.
→ More replies (1)44
u/LongWalk86 6h ago
I would argue that Spotify is a far more useful services to more people than any one artists music. Not a fan of how they compensate musicians or do business in many other ways. But pointing out that the person who owns/runs the worlds most popular music streaming services has more wealth than one particular artist really isn't some big own. I would honestly find the inverse more strange.

I understand the premise but this argument isn't a good one. The owner and CEO of the platform handling thousands of artists being richer than one single artist is more natural than the opposite no?
→ More replies (13)7
u/nmay-dev 6h ago
I guess if you consider his a contribution to the spotify stock price as being more valuable than the artists contribution to the ecosystem they both share as the natural order. Sure.
20
u/Foxcooler 6h ago
Not trying to defend a fucking billionaire, but i actually do consider his contribution greater than ONE SINGLE ARTIST. We're not talking about the collective here, we're talking about one singer songwriter.
Should one single artist be wealthier than the whole industry they enrich from?

u/catf1sh1 6h ago
They would like to squeeze more money out of users
55
u/DocMoochal 6h ago
I was just gonna say. Im amazed people think big business cares about the consumer anymore. These companies have captured so much of the market they can effectively do whatever they want within the law.
87
u/thebornotaku 6h ago
Family plans are like 15 bucks a month for five users, individual plans are 10 bucks a month for one person.
It’s greed.
52
u/BloodBlizzard 5h ago
It's actually $13 for individuals and $22 for family now. Still, you're right, its greed.
17
u/masterz13 5h ago
Yeah, they keep raising the price of the individual plan while giving you fewer benefits. No ads? Sure...if it's a song. Podcasts are filled with them.
4
u/Beznia 3h ago
I pay for family. I do it because it's cheaper for my girlfriend and I on the family plan than paying individually. I give it to both my parents who each live at their own homes, but are elderly so they don't actually play music on a computer or phone. It's specifically so they can play music through their smart home devices.
I guess the upside here is I fully run their home networks and also own their accounts so I can do that verification for them or set up a VPN tunnel at their homes if it comes down to it. It's just extremely frustrating because they aren't going to be getting a subscription regardless, this is just taking advantage of the fact I get 5 accounts for a family plan and only have 2 real users.
16
u/onethreehill 6h ago
Because a family plan generates a lot less revenue than all the members buying an individual plan?
25
u/LadnavIV 6h ago

I imagine they just want people to put their kids on the plan so they get used to using it, them when they move out they get forced to their own Spotify plan
2
u/helly1080 5h ago
Capitalism. They care about you as long as you are a consumer that will help them make more money than they did last quarter. Not so they can pay their employees better or put that profit into making the product better. Just so they can tell the board they increased profits in order to not be fired.
Spotify doesn't care about music or artists. They care only about making money off of those people.
2
u/ian9outof10 3h ago
That’s basically it, they’ll tempt you with some “we have cheap family plans, wink, wink” and then when you’re all signed up, they rug-pull like a common scammer. Netflix was the most egregious for that shit, with the password sharing turnaround. But they’re all pricks

22
u/forseti99 5h ago edited 5h ago
That's because they are no longer called MP3 players. They're DAPs (Digital Audio Player) mostly because they play MP3, FLAC, OGG, and about 10 more audio file types.
Most companies that produce them are chinese, so you can find them on Aliexpress for really good prices (Amazon adds a lot to the price): Hiby, Shanling, TempoTec, iBasso, FiiO... Visit their websites and check their products.
Also check r/DigitalAudioPlayer
And PLEASE don't call them "DAP players", as that would be Digital Audio Player Players

Buy music from Bandcamp on Bandcamp Fridays if they have it, elsewhere if not. Stream my music outside of my home network using plex + plexamp. Plexamp is great, I actually own the music so it isn't ever going anywhere, and I give more money to the artists I actually listen to. I did like some of the exploratory aspects of Spotify and was originally sad to have to find new music other ways, but I've actually found that to be more fun than the algorithm.

Netflix lost 800k subscribers overnight when they canceled mail dvds. My family members were among those who canceled. They now use ot again. Nobody will remember this feature in 5 yrs. Society needs to hurt these companies faster and harder than they currently do. Spotify will likely see no difference in revenue but will see less users. So profit per user will also show as up. Stocks will be happy.
3
u/makked 4h ago
In the DVD-by-mail era, Netflix peaked at around 16 million to 20 million. They have 325 million subscribers today. I get your point but writing was on the wall for physical media and they would be dead today if they didn’t pivot.

If it is every second they are going to have massive problems, going to cause so many failures due to scanning it and by the time the device registers it will be an invalid token. It will more then likely be every minute, maybe 30 or 45 seconds. Big reason 2FA uses those same limits is the invalid token issues shorter times cause.

3
u/Excelius 5h ago edited 2h ago
Neither the article nor the Spotify support page seem to disclose what triggers this.
Ideally this would only trigger with extended periods of time where the user is away from the primary residence.
3
u/SkyYellow_SunBlue 5h ago
You know what - probably nothing if this is a legit household family member.
Support page still lists address verification for new accounts or when main account holder changes the address -
And then under that it says they may ask some users to verify by QR code.
You’re probably just still verified unless they have a reason to suspect you need to do this again. It needs to be a deterrent, but not a massive inconvenience to paying customers (they aren’t stupid).

They tend to have a better discovery algorithm for finding new music, but the primary reason for me anyway is the blended playlists with other people where it combines our listening tastes and the ability to have a "jam" where you and a friend can listen to the same queue of music at the same time and both have control over what's playing.
Me and my best friend use this to listen to music together while we're gaming since we live a thousand miles from each other and they're on my family plan. They use YouTube Music for their day-to-day but spotify when we game
6
u/MuddledLucidity 4h ago
I use it at the retail store I work at because the store speakers are connected to the office computer so i have to put spotify on there and it allows me to control the music from the counter computer. Last I checked you cannot do that with youtube. Also, fuck youtube (but that may just be me).
14
u/i_max2k2 4h ago
Or Apple Music which trumps it anyway.
9
u/DuckyDeer 4h ago
I made to switch from Spotify to Apple Music, and while the sound quality is so much better, there is music missing that was available to stream on Spotify.
I imported my playlists and noticed there were quite a few tracks marked as unavailable. The one example I can give off the top of my head is The Craft soundtrack. On Spotify, the entire album is available to stream; on Apple Music, a lot of the songs are unavailable to stream unless you've purchased the album/songs through iTunes (which is what I ended up doing)

u/Suddenly_Dragon 27m ago
So having a solution to the problem doesn't excuse the existence of the problem in the first place, so don't get confused thinking I'm on board with this, but:
Couldn't you just screengrab the qr code and send it to the account holder to have them scan it? Or if they disable screenshots while the qr code is on screen, you could get someone to take a picture of the code and send it? I know android lets you "scan" codes from your gallery. Could be a potential workaround.

It’s super easy to get your tunes these days. Chuck them on your phone or an iPod or MP3 player. And before anyone says “but iPod classics are expensive” Ask yourself do you need one? A 16GB Nano is still easily 4000 tunes if not more. Do you listen to that many on Spotify?

I mean that's great you have $10k to drop on music. Not everyone has that luxury.

Here’s the thing. I’m not going to find most of the smaller artists directly. I use playlists and the new prompted playlists to help me find stuff I wouldn’t normally find on my own. I’d probably still just be listening to the same Dave Mathews Band and Mumford & Sons albums on my own.

Spotify pays less per click because they have a free tier. If you care about a band buy their music and their merch directly and don’t stream.

If I didn't use Spotify, I would just go back to torrenting all my music.

Oh, no. Me and my mp3 player will be devastated by this (seriously, cancel your Spotify if you haven't already). If you're interested in de-streamifying your music listening while keeping modern creature comforts, I recommend this video by Dammit Jeff

Since when do people actually need to live together to be on a family plan for anything? This is like Netflix restricting a shared single account dialed up to an extreme.
Family plans, where each member has their own login, should have no restrictions. Why shouldn't I be able to be on the same plan as my sister who lives on the other side of the country? What other services have such a ridiculous restriction? This just feels like Spotify thinking they can get away with incremental regression of their offerings.

Ive been with Spotify for over 10 years and im really wishing there was more to offer in terms of music, the ui needs to be updated, I wish the search bar was on the bottom for easier access. The cost keeps going up and am at the point ill give apple music a second chance.

I know this isn't for everyone, but I pay for digital music. The iTunes store never went away, and Bandcamp is where underground music lives. So if you care about "supporting the artists," Buy The Music. If you like a song enough to listen to it three times, just buy it.

According to streaming services:
Random strangers living in the same apartment: Family
Broken family where children go between two households: Not family.
These corporations should be forced to change the name of these plans to household plans, not family plans.
