If anyone finds this interesting.
Just as a quick background. The first Trek show that I watched was Discovery (that I liked but I found to be too serialized and degrading over the seasons), then Picard (that I also liked but of course it was full of characters that I didn't know, we watched it primarily because my dad was feeling nostalgic), then Lower Decks (that I adored), then Strange New Worlds (that I liked, but was also degrading over the seasons).
Other than that I always knew Star Trek because it is really unskippable if you're just a tiny bit on Internet and pop culture.
So, one day I thought to myself for no particular reason that I should try some Classic Trek. I was afraid to not like TOS as, honestly, it's getting real old so I hesitated between TNG and DS9 and ultimately settled for TNG.
So, I just finished season one and I greatly enjoyed it!
Of course there are things that made me tick such as :
- One of the first things that I noticed is the difference betwen the "Picard" Jean-Luc Picard and the TNG Jean-Luc Picard. In Picard, Jean-Luc is (as I remember) old calm and thoughtful. In TNG he's sometimes really emotional? I do not think it's the right term but there are moment when he really needs to chill. His French pronunciation is passable (I'm French) I give it a 5/10.
- Mr Riker has some insane standing leg angle.
And also, do the writers kind of like to humiliate the character ahah? Like there is this episode where they go on the matriarchy planet and you don't know why be he desides to dress as the locals and... oh I laught so hard.
When they go to the planet Tasha dies (we're going to talk about this one later), of course he finishes into the black tar pool.
Poor man lmao.
- Am I crazy or is there some fetish written episode? Like the pro-death sentence aryan nudist sex planet episode (I laugh so hard when they're all running around)
- The episode ratings on imdb seems to be very harsh sometimes. Some episode that I think are great are like 5/10 or 6/10. Odd (or I have bad tastes idk).
- What is the deal with Wesley Crusher? I do not dislike the character. But I do not understand the "forced" importance he has. I understand he's the son of a high ranking officer, he gets assigned the role of active ensign because Picard was nice that day. But what is he doing on the bridge? Isn't he supposed to like, start at the bottom of the chain? Isn't he supposed to get off the ship and go through the normal process of Star Fleet incorporation? Do the entrance exams of Star Fleet Academy are all so damn hard for anyone (not to mention the insane not-so-fair advantages he has over other recruit as he's REALLY privileged on the Enterprise)? And where is his uniform?
- I did not really understand the scale of Deanna Troi's abilities. She can feel emotions, ok. But isn't it told that she can really read minds? If so, this seems really underutilized.
- I found the general acting to be kind of dull. By that I mean that nobody seems to be IN the setting, There is rarely any display of emotions and it feels like a theater piece. Maybe it's just me or maybe it's juste the standard acting for a 87' show, or both idk. I heard that it gets better in later seasons (?).
- I found Tasha Yar to be one of the most interesting character... it's such a shame she dies in such a weird way.
From the beginning of the show she's been one of my favorite character. She was emotional, had an interesting story (my modern Trek brain was NOT ready when she casually mentions the "rape gangs" of her home planet), didn't hesitate to throw hands.
And when they go on the black tar monster planet, she get flipped, got me a smile as it was a funny stunt and they pronounce her dead. I didn't believe it at first, not in a "I'm so sad I can't believe it" way but just a "whut?????".
Black tar monster with traumas appears, kills a cast member and that's it.
They then go in a funeral holo decks scene where the Tasha hologram follows the cast with it's hologram eyes.
Such a shame.
Apart from all these, I greatly enjoyed the show. I found that the general optimism of Star Trek is just so refreshing to the global deterioration of the idea of the future that awaits us all.
I'll definitely continue the show. Thank you for your attention.
