English isn’t my first language. For the longest time, I thought “son of a bitch” was someone’s name.
I heard it in movies and thought it sounded like “Sonovabitch.” I imagined it was some famous historical figure, and people used his name as an expression or something.
I even thought it sounded like an Eastern European surname, a bit like Milla Jovovich.
Then I saw it written down.
OH.
It’s an insult. 😂
I genuinely thought there was a famous guy named Sonovabitch living somewhere in history.
So, historians of Reddit, what did this man supposedly do to become such a legendary figure?

Now I'm not American, but I always see historians say the US became a superpower because of "The Mississippi river" or "large amounts of oil", yet there are other places in the world that had the same kind of thing!
Maybe it's not that complicated. The US is the largest Anglo nation by population, and pretty large by size too, and other European countries didn't really send settlers to their possessions (other than maybe Dutch South Africa) so no wonder the US is a superpower.
If you scaled up most other EU or Anglosphere countries to the size or population of the USA, they would be doing just as well as the US is today.
\>simply be the largest european settler colony
\>win
So I'm not suprised why Russia and a collective EU are in second/third place, as well as China, seeing they have a similar history of innovation and technology as Europe, and the fact that they too are quite large and populous.
Whereas other European colonies of the world were fractured, small, or never were settled by Europeans and their estates, but rather natives and resources exploited instead. And the nations that were never colonised never reached the technological scale of East Asia or Europe, I wouldn't expect Ethiopia or Thailand to have ever had civilisations destined for the big leagues, although it's interesting to see Japan and Turkey have pulled their weight

Was this a serious suggestion and she was just so out of touch that she thought it would be possible to provide cake to the starving peasants?
Or was this a casual dismissal of the problem that the peasants had no bread, as if to say, “that’s not my problem.“
