So let me get this straight. Go vegetarian if we can't "afford" high beef prices. But get violent explosive diarrhea from eating produce that was contaminated with human feces.

u/FarImprovement2840 29d ago

Correct

We are fucked either way

194

u/SomeDumbPenguin America 29d ago

Plus, a lot of those meat alternatives like the Beyond products are around the same price point per a pound as beef currently is

98

u/nightmaresabin 29d ago

An Impossible Whopper at my local Burger King is a dollar more than the normal beef Whopper.

76

u/gleaf008 29d ago

That’s unpossible.

unpossible

3

u/poorlilwitchgirl 28d ago

That's just the Vegan Tax. Plant-based foods have always been less resource intensive and thus (after accounting for animal ag subsidies) cheaper sources of protein on a gram for gram basis, but companies charge more because it's a small but dedicated market. The pendulum has actually been swinging away from the plant-based market lately, but maybe this will change that.

1

u/dformed Washington 29d ago

It's like a $3 substitution at Red Robin, but tbf it's usually slightly better than their beef patties.

0

u/psiphre Alaska 29d ago

actually love me an impossible whopper

12

u/warmfuzzume 29d ago edited 29d ago

Yes there’s totally a “vegan tax.” I’ve been vegan over 25 years and was never rich, but there seems to be this impression that only rich white women will buy specialty vegan products or something.

I was so happy when Dunkin’ Donuts had to start providing plant “milks” for the same price as dairy!

Of course it’s also difficult for small businesses to sell them cheaper…there’s multiple causes.

But the vegan tax absolutely is a thing.

Plus veganism aside, that’s totally unfair to all the people who have allergies, which in my lifetime certainly grew among the younger generation, probably because of unintended consequences on our microbiomes from over-use of antibiotics.

Which are overused with the cows too, then creating these giant poop and antibiotic mess pits that overflow during our increasingly severe hurricanes. Further degrading the quality of the soil.

Which research shows veggies already have noticeably less nutrients than they used to because the soil is depleted.

But let’s all just go change our diets , it’s all simple folks duh.

I’m sure the farmers we gave all those subsidies to will figure out something to do with their cows.
Like just slaughter them & throw it out. 🤷Easy peasy.

Or at least how that’s trump’s mouthpieces and puppets and conspirators love to dish out the snark right. They do not seem to care at all about anything but money for themselves do they.

Until you dish a little snark back and they’re all like 😭😭😭

0

u/SomeDumbPenguin America 28d ago

Ironically, they've actually helped the alt meat industry with what they did. I haven't seen Beyond compete with beef per a pound until recently, unless there was a sale.

A least with some of those veg options they try to watch out for allergies like nuts and soy

2

u/GlitterPirateKiki58 29d ago

Tofu is cheap! But it might be chemically contaminated from packaging ink.

2

u/RogueSquirrel0 29d ago

Because they aren't subsidized like beef+dairy.

1

u/dmj9 29d ago

Wait until zee bugs

1

u/cat_prophecy 28d ago

But you're also not supposed to eat "ultra processed food" which I imagine those meat alternatives definitely fall under.

1

u/Sassychic02 29d ago

If you are going meatless there are way better ways to do it than going to impossible anything. Like hummus and cooked mushrooms make great burger patties. Its not the same of course but its really good.

1

u/zombiegojaejin 28d ago

Beyond has to pay their own way. You know, like conservatives allegedly believe we're supposed to do? As opposed to the massive subsidies to red states for animal ag and feed crops.

0

u/getdemsnacks 29d ago

Of course they are, how else are the c-suite people of those companies going to be able to afford their first mega yacht

-3

u/oooshi 29d ago

One’s cost is high because of the cost of raising a cow from birth, feeding and housing it several years until slaughter.

The other’s cost is high because it positions itself as the moral and superior choice and thus should cost more because it’s genesis arrived from the costs, both morally and financially, being higher than the slaughtering of the industry the latter set out to replace.

-1

u/getdemsnacks 29d ago

Fair point. I was thinking it would be the gouging.

-1

u/oooshi 29d ago

Totally. Sorry if I at all came across aggressive in my comment. Merely wanted to get the thought out while piggy backing yours. we just seem to agree with one another is all 😆

-2

u/getdemsnacks 29d ago

It's all good 👍🏼

0

u/Biodiversity1001 29d ago

I was looking at veggie burgers in the freezer section and they run about $10/lb, it is not an affordable alternative.

I always wondered about tofu being so much more than meat, too (not steak, perhaps) but higher per pound than chicken and pork.

4

u/Wallacecubed 29d ago

Tofu is super cheap. There’s TVP, which is really cheap. Tempeh. Then you go into lentils, beans, etc. There are a bunch of cheap vegetarian proteins.

0

u/Biodiversity1001 29d ago

Last I looked a few years ago a pack of tofu was $5, and not sure if that was for a pound. Fresh chicken tenders were 1.99/lb this week.

I have issue digesting beans in any form. I do have a general recipe for veggie burgers, starts off with basically proportions for a variety of ingredients. So they would be a lot cheaper made from scratch with beans, lentils, rice etc. It's the spices that are going to run up the cost.

2

u/Wallacecubed 29d ago

Spices aren’t an expense. They’re an investment in the future. Like a parrot.

Also, A pound of tofu is $1.65 at ALDI. It’s even organic.

https://www.aldi.us/store/aldi/products/21732553-earth-grown-extra-firm-organic-tofu-14-oz

Edit: Ok! 14oz! Jesus! I don’t have my glasses on.

2

u/Biodiversity1001 29d ago

It would cost me 40 in gas to get to an Aldi, and I get 30mpg.

Will hjave to check the price at the local chain again, now I am curious.

1

u/defaulticus 29d ago

Veggie meat substitutes have never been the affordable option. Vegetarianism tends to be a more expensive life choice.

There is a cheap version of vegetarianism, but it looks like lots of rice and beans, not impossible burger.

2

u/TAMeaniePies 29d ago

fortunately, bean burgers are waaay better than any ‘meat substitute’ burger.

1

u/Biodiversity1001 29d ago

true. I didn't eat meat for years but I did do eggs and dairy. Ya, I know, dairy is bad for animal treatment, too. I now eat beef and chicken, not often, but I did give up pork. I do miss bacon.

0

u/mustachegiraffe 29d ago

That’s insane

0

u/psiphre Alaska 29d ago

which, considering how much better for the environment one impossible/beyond patty is than a beef one, makes them a clear win. $BYND, i'm tellin' you

0

u/Development-Feisty 28d ago

Costco’s got a really good deal

-5

u/hereforbobsanvageen Canada 29d ago

Not only that, but a majority of those products are hyper processed, which is arguably way worse for you then just straight beef.

5

u/Wallacecubed 29d ago

Man, is the meat industry spamming these comments? There are so many meat alternatives that are worlds healthier than beef, especially with all the steroids and antibiotics that go into them. Then you have the methane cows give off playing an enormous factor in greenhouse gasses. Never mind tax payer subsidies that make beef cheap in the US. It’s a dietary relic of a bygone era that needs to go.

0

u/Lizziedeee 29d ago

As someone allergic to red meat, I appreciate that they’re available, but yeah, not so good for you.

They were hammering Talarico in Texas, claiming he was a vegetarian, like it's an awful thing and made him less than a man. He did a commercial eating brisket or something.

79

u/Other-Importance-214 29d ago

Now the anti-Talarico ads running in TX are suggesting he’s a woke communist because he dares to give dignity to human beings who happen to be trans. Culture wars are all they’ve got, I just pray the voting public is tired of it by now and sees through it.

9

u/pocketjacks Texas 29d ago

And the people they're targeting in those campaign ads have likely never known if they've been in the presence of a trans person. They live out in the country and surround themselves with like-minded bigots. Trans people to them are the boogey man hiding under their bed.

4

u/OpheliaRainGalaxy 29d ago

First time I met a trans person and knew it was while visiting a friend in Texas in the 00s. I recall being totally sloshed on everclear and asking my friend "Yo why you keep calling that dude Ashley?"

Even very drunk, it wasn't confusing once it was explained. Which is good, because the 3yo cousin who was always playing with my jewelry box instead of their own boy toys made some shoulda-been-obvious announcements as an adult. Like the youngest cousin laughed at me when I explained that the adults used to think the eldest was a boy, because duh she's not a boy and it's really obvious.

It's funny how folks just "clock" a certain way regardless of presentation. Another of my cousins is nowhere near out of the closet yet, but still "clocks as" what they really are, to the point I've had to explain to friends why that cousin has a boy name when they're so clearly a girl.

14

u/Difficult_Writer_371 29d ago

That’s all the republicans can do . They have nothing but bullshit to run on . They created the asshole in office , who has always been a piece of shit

2

u/Ar_Ciel Texas 29d ago

"I can't gas up my Truck-Boat-Truck!!"

2

u/Thehelloman0 29d ago

It's crazy to me the amount of money the Republican party spends to talk about trans people

0

u/certifiednerdgirl 29d ago

He quit doing that when fox news called him out on it. Folded like a cheap lawn chair. Gotta get that mythical voter who would have voted for the Dem if only they were mean enough to the transies.

5

u/Wayofchinchilla 29d ago

Exactly this is the same party that had a meltdown years ago when AOC talked about the green New Deal claiming they wanted to turn all our children into vegetarians are now going to tell us that we should be vegetarians because meat is just too expensive for us peasants.

3

u/djsquilz 29d ago

as a former texan, i like talarico and i get where his campaign team is coming from, but it's so damn annoying listening to him parrot the rehearsed line about his whole family's from texas and he loves brisket. gotta do what you gotta do though. if anything it makes me hate his opposition even more because he spends more time countering their weird unfounded "masculinity" attacks rather than y'know, talking policy.

1

u/pocketjacks Texas 29d ago

Yeah, but it's manly when you do it in service of Trump, like Marco wearing heels or Ted Cruz not defending his wife.

1

And then have republicans call you a pansy for not eating said beef they told you that you didn’t deserve.

3

u/soopafly 29d ago

28

u/Present-Resolution23 29d ago

But also if you’re vegetarian you’re a soyboy cuck or whatever they called Talarico just because his girlfriend is…

It’s all just ridiculous

56

u/Myriad-of-kitties 29d ago

At least diarrhea can be treated. Prions from mystery "beef" is way worst.

Not even to be kidding.. the only way to test for prions is if your family allows them to test for them on your corpse's brain... So you are already cold dead at this point.. but you wont be a #/ stastic until your family allows it. Until that point you're the living dead, having the living trying to figure out whats wrong.

1

u/slipperyMonkey07 29d ago

I do when in season. Issue ends up being I do not live in a place that is sunny year round to grow vegetables easily. I do usually grow some things in pots indoors with grow lights in the winter, but lessening that a bit because of energy cost. Luckily most winter meals are things cooked to the point they kill everything. Frozen veg is at least an option.

2

u/Carbonatite Colorado 29d ago

"Let them eat cake (with diarrhea)"

2

u/threehundredthousand California 29d ago

Which is a tough decision for conservatives because vegetables are part of the gay agenda. It's a conundrum.

Wash your vegetables

2

u/Dirtydiscodeeds 29d ago

Also, onions are 1.99 a pound near me. So, I can get chicken on sale at 1.99 a pound. Or onion. I'm excited!

2

u/halfsack99 29d ago

On top of that, not long ago someone choosing to be vegetarian would be woke bullshit. DEI stuff.

2

u/Successful_Sloth_852 29d ago

Sounds pretty similar to "Let them eat cake"

2

u/Curious_Function6359 29d ago

The budget-friendly option is Soylent Green, made from politicians. Same explosive results, but for once they'd actually be feeding the people.

But also, buy all the beef you can to support ‘Murican beef farmers. Schrödinger’s cow, if you will.

I eat meat. I love eating meat. I’m not gonna stop eating meat any time soon.

Lentils are a great source of filling protein that make great soups, curries, and even as an additive to meat based fillings. I’ve put them in taco meat and had burritos, tacos, and nachos that are 50/50 beef and lentils. All delicious. Not a drop in replacement that you don’t notice as an artificial meat substitute but definitely delicious in its own right.

I highly recommend looking to groups and cultures that have high levels of vegetarianism for nutritional, delicious, meal options that are designed around non-meat proteins as a complete meal. Eating a meal that has no meat in it is almost guaranteed to suck if you self limit to options that either salads or meat imitations. I have never had a meat imitation product I actually liked.

Go vegetarian, but don't eat:

  • apple sauce
  • frozen berries
  • salsa
  • tomato soup
  • fruit bars
  • salad mixes
  • broccoli sprouts
  • alfalfa sprouts

...I literally ran out of steam just listing recent recalls, there are so many.

Believe it or not, regulatory scrutiny on food producers is important and works! Well, worked.

1

u/StonkSorcerer 28d ago

Don't forget screwworm and the tainted beef from Argentina that China said "Hell No" to. I'll file Trump converting folks to vegetarians to "huh, I did not expect that".

1

u/will0w27 28d ago

Yeah I’m considering becoming a vegetarian. My concern is that produce seems to go bad in roughly 4 days now. I have a small hydroponic garden in my apartment which is amazing and it’s nice to know the food is safe. But I don’t have enough space to plant various veggies at the same time… also this isn’t feasible for most people

0

u/Maximum-Warning9355 29d ago

If it helps, most produce has always been contaminated with human feces. Have you ever seen an outhouse on a farm?
