Its funny they get clowned for this, when it wasn't a teaser; just a "Hey starfield is first, but yes then elder scrolls, we aren't abandoning the game series"
Unfortunately Bethesda is like RockStar, they can shit out the same game for over a decade on a different console and they have customers dumb enough to buy it again and again. Otherwise they’d probably shut down too.
Rockstar actually builds innovative technology and games though.
Naughty Dog released TLOU2 at the same time RDR2 came out and R* are much closer to releasing GTA than ND is Intergalactic. 6+ Years later and RDR2 is still the most technically impressive game I've ever played.
Rockstar does anything but innovations. Their games are incredibly stale and formulaic in terms of gameplay, they are just elevated massively by enormous budgets, graphics, animations, massive worlds, and fantastic writing in terms of RDR2.
GTA 5 had dogshit writing and story but it didn't matter since it farms kids and insecure people in the online mode.
Pushing graphical tech forward IS innovation though. The fact that RDR2 came out on Xbox One is nothing short of a technological miracle, same with GTA VI on PS5 from what we've seen.
What innovations are you looking for? Because as far as AAA games go there's not much to "innovate" in terms of gameplay for a game like GTA other than expanding extremely wide in terms of a variety of shit to do and have it all be cohesive.
Also, something like the greet/antagonize system was pretty innovative as a gameplay mechanic IMO.
GTA IV and RDR2 were both groundbreaking tech at the time, so the whole "Burj Khalifa" narrative kinda falls flat on its face.
Also, there's countless companies who can throw an obscene amount of money. TTWO only has a $32B market cap which is peanuts compared to MSFT & Sony. It takes genuine innovation/talent to weave together ~6,000 employees worth of features, upgrades and mechanics into a single cohesive new product.
Rockstar also took one of the greatest physics engines ever created and shot it behind the woodshed, they've literally destroyed more innovation than bethesda has created over the last 20 years
How so? Are you arguing that GTA IV's over the top Looney Tunes ragdoll was so stripped down in RDR2 that it "destroyed innovation"? The ragdolls are just as good, if not better in RDR2 vs GTAIV from what I remember.
Or is this more about driving mechanics/physics? Which again, hard to say that it was "shot behind a woodshed" when we're just looking at a single different iteration that was made with the same Xbox 360 constraints?
I was more referring to the original implementation of Euphoria in GTA4, specifically the dynamic reactions of NPCs and animation cycling. Car physics were way too loose but the reactivity when you shoot an NPC and how they interact to disruptions was truly the best the industry has ever seen. Shooting someone in the shoulder would have them grab that spot and continue either running or fighting, or getting drunk would have nico grabbing for surfaces to catch him when he falls. Conversely GTA5 and RTDR2 has way less contextual dynamism and often looked like deliberate flopping and there are no attempts to brace catch or react to what is happening, they sort of just flop like they're in toy story. Euphoria was neutered heavily in GTA5 and RDR2 and the dynamism in 4, though flawed in some ways, was leagues ahead of what we see even today in other titles. It's a shame because Euphoria has a ton of potential and it sounded at the time like they had to dial it back to leave processing headroom in other areas of RDR2 and 5.
Heres a quick video showing the differences between 4 and 5
Yeah the real issue with Rockstar is they’re just a shit company. Very anti consumer and poor working conditions historically. People just keep buying their games because they aren’t flops like the rest of the AAA industry.
Each time they find a new platform to release skyrim on, ES6 gets pushed out a few more years. We'll never see it if they start releasing skyrim on your smart fridge.
Exactly. Lots of EA hate, which they usually deserve, but still being in early development after 6 years would get any studio canned. Not to mention the turds they’ve dropped over the past 10 year
That's not on the devs, that's on the marketing team, & the point of those super early trailers is to hype up investors. Most devs think it's just as dumb as we do.
Most people have no idea how software or game development happen. Devs get blamed when the lion's share of blame is usually on management over-promising and requiring delivery on an impossible schedule. Just beginning coding without a well thought out end goal is not really a good strategy. One other thing that many devs will not admit to because their jobs depend on it, but they do not know how to do everything that is required for a project. 'Lean' and 'Agile' teams only work if everyone is very competent at their job and that usually only comes with lots of time. Otherwise the teams need to be larger but the studio is often more likely to cut a person and try and find a person that they think can do the work of two.
From what I learned from the other comments the dev team from mass effect got pulled to help with the latest Dragon age and got laid off after bad sales only leaving 50 people left to work on the game.
Remember when Fallout 4 was announced and then released 5 months later? What the hell happened to that. I feel like bioware had been dying (translation: EA letting it die) for a while. Looking at the release dates of early mass effect and dragon age, and some other games: They put out around 6 major titles in roughly 5 years. Then 5 years between the last 2 mass effect titles (not including LE). Sadly, super long development cycles don't equate to a better game. Look at activision stamping out a nerw COD every year, and no sign of slowing.
have you thought about that not everyting is made for your benefit? trailers are sometimes made not for fans but for investers to put more funding into a studio..
That's one thing that I really appreciate about Square Enix with Kingdom Hearts, all they needed to say after KH3's release was "yes, KH4 is in the works; no the IP isn't dead, we'll tell you more when we have more to show" and that's exactly what they did until D23 this year.
I do wonder if this is, like many announcements that are baffling to gamers, is actually for the investors.
Like financially, it's a stretch, so they feel they need to show potential investors or already existing investors that it's got chops/people really want it, so they give more funding.
It's for investor funding, not the fans. Social media hype attracts more funds and talent. Same reason fangame release demoes rather than stay quiet until they finish.
Unfortunately, this doesn't really work anymore when social media has so deeply divided us and content becomes thus either more controversial or more disposable. The best works then seem to become passion projects made by talented people regardless of outside opinions, and that can be harder to sustain in a bloated AAA market. And of course, Auteurs can fail too.
It makes me think that this decision came about because Bioware were completely mismanaging their dev time yet again.
Here I was hoping this year's N7 day would be the one that we get an actual announcement. Maybe even a release window.
It's hard to even be mad at EA for this one. Bioware had a recipe for success with Mass Effect. I never played Dragon Age, but it sounds like that was much the same. Even Anthem, on paper, should have been a money printing IP. To squander all of that as they have and to be unable to make even the tiniest bit of forward progress on the one title that could claw them out of the pit they've dug themselves into is incomprehensible.
I'm pretty sure the reason this happens is to drum up interest and buy themselves time from the higher ups. If they didn't put out that trailer, this might of happened sooner. Like immediately after Veilguard was confirmed to have flopped.
I think they took a page from Gta 5 rockstar studio where gta 5 kept making money for many years and continue development/focus on gta 6. Gta 5 alone was probably able to sustain multi year development but not mass effect. Ea probably looked at the books and the early game and said nuh, easier/cheaper to close the studio than putting more money into project.

Can we agree that dropping a teaser 6 years ago and still saying its in early development is a moronic move that devs need to stop pulling.
