U.S. Politics megathread
American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!
All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Is it normal to still cry about a pet I lost 5 years ago?
I lost my cat 5 years ago, even before it happened I knew it would hit me hard and Id probably carry it for a long time, but even now, 5 years later, I find myself mourning him over and over and over, like I cant move past the grief. I have his collar hanging above my bed, every time I look at it it all just takes over again.
I was with him in the veterinarian room when they had to put him down because I knew he deserved for me to be there, and Im happy I was but the whole experience is really burned into my soul and my mind cant seem to let go of it.
Is this normal? Does anyone have the same experience? The rest of my family was able to move on but I just cant seem to let go.

Men who’ve walked away from your children, how are you now?
This seems a bit heavy I know, I’m just interested in some honest info as my girlfriend’s dad walked away from her when she was 6. We were talking about it last night and she was wondering how he feels about it now.
If you’re a man who’s walked away from your child, how do you feel now? Any regrets? Does it get easier for you? Would you do it again if you had your time over?

If you buy an abandoned storage unit at an auction and find a locked safe with $200,000 in cash, do you actually get to keep it?
Storage auction rules say you buy the entire contents of the unit as-is. But if someone opens a locker and finds a shoebox full of $100 bills or gold bars, does the government or police immediately seize it under civil forfeiture, or are you legally allowed to just walk into a bank and deposit it?

How to order a margarita at a restaurant
It’s my birthday and obviously I want to celebrate it with my first legal drink. The only problem is I have no idea how to order a margarita and I like to have scripted plan when ordering so I don’t sound dumb, ya know?
Update: strawberry margarita has been acquired. Thank yall for your replies!

Can I really just walk into a car dealership and purchase a car for several thousand dollars less than the sticker price if I am offering cash?

is it normal to go to urgent care/acute care to get your ears cleaned?
i got my ears cleaned once at a doctors office when i was 15, they shot water into my ear while they held a bucket type thing under it, and SO much earwax came out. i could hear colors after and it felt so satisfying.
ive been wanting to get this done again for awhile (im 20 now) but dont know how to ask. can i just go to urgent care? or is that more meant for ‘urgent’ cases like people who are actually sick as opposed to me just wanting my ears clean? i’d go to an ear specialist but i fear i’d have to wait an extremely long time for a schedule opening just for something so simple😅 so i’m just wondering if thats a normal thing to go to urgent care for
edit; i want to clarify im talking about URGENT CARE, not emergency room

What is a question that sounds like a toddler asked it, but top scientists genuinely cannot agree on the answer?
Not deep philosophical paradoxes like the meaning of life, but simple physical questions about everyday reality. What is something so deceptively basic that anyone could ask it, but it completely breaks modern experts when they try to give a definitive answer?

How do polyamorous people have mental energy for multiple partners?
Even if 10,000 stars align and you somehow meet people who are mutually attracted to you, willing to be poly AND are also emotionally mature and not too difficult, you still need to keep track of their likes and dislikes, communicate regularly and promptly, perform emotional labor when they had a bad day, reorganise your entire schedule so nobody is neglected etc.
I am not judging them, I am genuinely curious because even a monogamous relationship with no major issues is exhausting to me at times. But maybe that's just me.

If Walmart is using AI to tell them skipped items at the self check out, why am I scanning them in the first place??
I accidentally missed an item in my cart. I was stopped at the door and the employee told me exactly which item in my cart wasn’t scanned and sent me back to the check out line. No big deal- mistake fixed.
However, if they know what’s in my cart, why do I even need to scan the bar code? I should be able to just walk up to a kiosk and pay my total before walking out the door!

Is ice rock? Why is ice rock?
I got in a debate with a coworker after he posited that ice is in-fact rock. I have to say that I can’t explain why I so passionately feel ice is in-fact definitely not rock. But I do feel it is in-fact not rock. It is ice, a distinct (and to me non-rock) substance in the universe. I’m hoping we can get to the (rock) bottom of this important debate thank you.
Edit: well. Clearly ice is technically rock. It seems water is then technically magma, which feels even more wrong. These things were distinct in my mind, apparently they are not. More people should be upset about this. Thank you all
Edit edit: I’m still quite upset about this revelation. And more people should be too. I respect geology and expertise in general.

Boyfriend created a whole interactive 3d model on the computer of his works warehouse and now they want to move forward and get him his own server.
Keeping this as short as possible. Basically what the title says. The VP of the company wants to use my boyfriend's application he created. Things are starting to get a little sketchy cause they keep asking for full access but he only shows them demos and the capabilities. My question here is what should he do to ensure his work is safe? Are there some legal steps he should take? Patent?

Why do only Western Europeans refuse to acknowledge their diaspora?
I’m ethnically Chinese but my family has been in the states for several generations so I speak no Mandarin and know close to nothing about my culture. Despite this, when I visited China for the first time I was treated as a “Chinese” person that had grown up abroad. My Mexican and Arab friend both had similar experiences in their home countries despite not speaking the language at all.
It seems like the only group that doesn’t do this are Western Europeans, where the Irish or Germans or Italians actively make fun of their diaspora who try to connect to their heritage / culture and refer to themselves as “Irish” when their ancestors came over 100 years ago.

Why is it spelled as forty and not fourty?
Sorry if this has been asked before, it just popped into my mind. It makes no sense that it is spelled as four and fourteen, yet the next one up loses the U.

If I went to a costume party dressed as a LDS missionary, would that be insensitive?
For context, I am about the whitest guy imaginable. If you pictured the most picket fence, Vineyard Vines, W.A.S.P individual, you would have a pretty good idea of my general appearance.
This fact is not lost on my friends who jokingly refer to me as looking “Mormon.” So for this year, I decided to make my Halloween costume a LDS missionary before I go to a party, to lean into the gag.
The issue being, that there is going to probably be a whole lot of people, and only a handful of them will probably understand how this is an in-joke amongst my friends. Could this run the risk of coming across as insensitive?

Why do people not use ringtones anymore?
I understand that people don't like their phone making noises and just prefer to keep it in silent mode, but the question is, why is that the case now when previously people were really excited about their ringtones and message tones?

Celebrating my first birthday at 32 years old. Is it stupid I want all my parties to be kiddy parties?
As in Superman themed cake, and only accepting action figures, comic books, video games, and refusing cash presents and gift cards while also doing party hats and games like pin the tail on the donkey and a pinata and musical chairs?

Do parents ever influence their sick child’s Make-A-Wish wish to get something they want for themselves?
I’ve always wondered if there are cases where parents of seriously ill children subtly influence what their kid wishes for through Make-A-Wish so that it’s something the parents themselves want.
For example, if the parents have always wanted to go to Japan, could they keep bringing it up or suggesting it until the kid ends up wishing for a family trip to Japan, even if the kid might have chosen something completely different on their own?
Has anyone ever heard of this happening, or worked with Make-A-Wish and seen something like it? I’m also curious if they have any way of making sure the wish is actually coming from the child?

Panty Lines. NSFW
Sorry I'm just so beyond curious. I saw someone else ask this a long long time ago, but men, how do you feel about panty lines? I saw some men say they LIKE them. I also saw a bunch of people saying its something only other women notice.
I did, however, have a man tell me that if I'm going to wear leggings or yoga pants, that I need to wear a thong or no underwear at all to avoid other people seeing panty lines. That comment stuck with me and it definitely played a part in this post. So... how do we feel about panty lines?
