About 600 inmates were receiving hormone therapy in 2025, the agency said in court records.

Meanwhile, the male prison population in the US is well over 1 million individuals.

0.06% and yet it gets so much fucking attention. One of the most artificially fueled culture war topics out there.

*Edited to correct percentage

u/LowerRhubarb 7h ago

It's all they ever had. The previous incarnations of this were "the communists", "the hippies", "the gays", etc. Always a "moral panic", always some fear mongering bullshit to feed to their brainless cult following throughout the decades.

14

u/ChromaticFinish 6h ago

Even less... Assuming all 600 are trans women, which probably isn’t the case, it’s .05%

7

u/Camachan 6h ago

.06% but still absolutely ridiculous and I agree

1

u/loanharassment 6h ago edited 6h ago

Nope that would be 60,000, not 600

Edit: I’ll leave this here for clarity

7

u/Camachan 6h ago

You're dividing 600 by 1,000,000 but then not multiplying it by 100, because your result is only out of 1, not 100

4

u/loanharassment 6h ago

Good call thanks

2

u/AuremCookieDragon 6h ago

1% of 1,000,000 is 10,000.

2

u/Ok-Transition7065 7h ago

I mean , yeah if these mf tried to focus on a real problem, you will found that.

They incompetent , incapable ( no blame on that) or the direct responsible on not solving that problematic

Soooo straw man things. Are easy to see from afar. When. They aren't that much problem

68

u/ofAFallingEmpire 8h ago

Seems like a minuscule “security concern”

54

u/Andoverian 7h ago

The government has not detailed evidence of security problems linked to hormone therapy for transgender inmates over the 30 years it has been provided

They're not even trying to make a legal case, they only care about pushing their culture war in the court of public opinion.

-25

u/Great_Maximum_6007 7h ago

The problem becomes "is it too small to care or is it too small to not care"?

38

u/MothashipQ 7h ago

600 people recieving healthcare does not really warrant a "security concern" for the nation, 600 people being denied life saving medical care is a major concern for civil liberties. Hope this helps!

-25

u/Great_Maximum_6007 7h ago

Out of a million? Which loops back to the question.

33

u/MothashipQ 7h ago

I don't think there's an acceptable percentage of people in the care of the state being denied medication they need to live that's more 0%.

21

u/Snow_King7 7h ago

Just one child being brutally tortured in the entire city of Omelas? A whole city! Why would they care about that?

-24

u/Great_Maximum_6007 7h ago

Exactly. How many people died when you read this sentence? It's either the system is important to be 100% or accept that the system is flawed and cracks will always be there, thus worrying about that small percentage is a waste of resources. Looping back to "is it too small to care or is it too small to not care"?.

17

u/dog_of_society 6h ago

A flawed system still should strive to do the best it can, including not intentionally withholding care that can clearly be provided given it has been provided previously.

Hope this helps!

6

u/ToriGirlie 5h ago

I think it's reasonable to question why the administration is targeting such a small population. If this is solely for cost cutting why select such a small minority to target when there are other ways to cut expenses that are not likely a violation of the law. I think it's important to defend the rights of these folks as we ought to strive to ensure we follow the law.

-2

u/Great_Maximum_6007 5h ago

Sounds like something can be done if that question is found here. They can argue "Every bit counts" vs "Every bit counts".

7

u/ToriGirlie 5h ago

I think you're deliberately missing the nuance of the discussion at hand. I think it's a reasonable question why did this administration target a small minority with policies which now obviously violate the law? The counter question why should we care about the rights of a small minority being violated seems like a questionable position to take.

Same answer.

Hope this helped!

-10

u/Great_Maximum_6007 7h ago

The loop continues.

9

u/ofAFallingEmpire 6h ago

When you’re asking if 100% of a particular minority group is worth caring about, your intentions are laid bare.

1

u/Great_Maximum_6007 5h ago

Are they? Where do the Albino prisoners fit in this? Or the differently abled? You can fold the list down and you will see how 100% is a fools errand. Then one argues is "These people aren't as big as my group why would they matter?". You can care and not put 100%, then it falls into "all people matter" phase.

6

u/ofAFallingEmpire 4h ago

You saying “are they too small to care about” is asking if the entire group is worth caring about.

This is distinct from what you’re saying now, which is “can we care about the entirety of this group”?

First you’re comparing minority to majority. Second you’re comparing a subset of a minority to the greater group, and claiming the impossibility of this is your argument.

It was not. My comment was pointing out you’re tossing out 100% of a group.

1

u/Great_Maximum_6007 4h ago

It's impossible to toss 100% of a group because there are minority within minorities that will get the short end of the stick.

1

u/DocPsychosis 1h ago

Wrong denominator. The article doesn't specify but I assume this is about federal inmates, not state prisoners. The total active population of the former is only about 150k.

506

u/Saneless 8h ago

The Trump administration appealed, arguing that treatments raised security concerns

Well, mark this date down in history. The first time a Republican has ever cared about conditions in a prison

166

u/BorkieDorkie811 8h ago

I don't think that's fair criticism. Republicans spend plenty of time figuring out how to make prison conditions worse.

29

u/Tuesday_6PM 6h ago

Not always! They made sure to move Ghislaine Maxwell to a cushier prison

As a trans person, I can be darker and say it’s because they want to continue the practice of v-coding.

Basically forcing trans women into pseudo marriages with very violent inmates as a pacification tool.

And yes, it is state sanctioned. It happens in both states with Democrat and Republican control. It is by definition state sanctioned sexual violence.

6

u/DontDoomScroll 3h ago edited 2h ago

If you don't call people being raped "unwanted sex" then please don't call what you have the apt words for "state sanctioned sexual violence", "rape"; don't call that "pseudo marriage".

  • Sincerely,
unmarried trans woman. Well I've been "married" plenty, just not by the state.

u/Arboreal_Web 1h ago

To shreds, you say?

13

u/Brooke-Forest 6h ago

IANAL but, I'm kinda sad Biden didn't use the supreme court decision about presidential immunity to order the immediate "something or another" of all the judges who voted for it, and trump for that matter.

3

u/XxChocodotxX 4h ago

I am also not a lawyer, but do enjoy reading on legal topics, for what that counts. There’s no mechanism I’m aware of that would have allowed Biden to legally do, well, much of anything to those justices for making a ruling. Legally. For the executive branch to seek retribution against judges for making a ruling, would be opening a very fierce Pandora’s Box that nobody realistically wants to deal with, and would definitely have unintended consequences that nobody would like.

6

u/winmace 8h ago

They need to be put under the supreme court

-4

u/ianc1215 5h ago

Can we just make them into a peach instead? Sounds more useful than putting them on trial.

21

u/ZoeyKaisar 6h ago

Some good news for once.

The worth of a society is in how it treats those with neither power nor privilege.

In a country that currently strives to incarcerate trans people for their existence, the cruelty should never extend to restriction of the medicines required for survival. Realize that the alternative is a death sentence.

47

u/TintedApostle 7h ago

Want to know why Trump and MAGA supporters are focused on Trans issues so much? One just need to read the answer to Question 1 of Malleus Maleficarum from 1486. This was the guide used to identify witches and sorcerers...

"Whoever believes that any creature can be changed for the better or the worse, or transformed into another kind or likeness, except by the Creator of all things, is worse than a pagan and a heretic."

These are religious extremists. This is what they believe. Centuries of science do not matter.

18

u/thepianoman456 6h ago

That may be true, but I think it’s simpler than that. Fascists need a boogeyman to sell their horrible policies, and they basically just pick one from a hat.

3

u/TintedApostle 6h ago

Fascists play on beliefs, fears and hate of what ever group they need.

2

u/A_Nonny_Muse 4h ago

It is their base who believes in the Malleus Maleficarum of1486. The trump administration need not believe in it themselves in order to exploit the beliefs of their base.

Trump himself most certainly does not believe in anything religious. He about as irreligious and one can be. Everything he has ever said about religion was intended to manipulate the religious.

2

u/TintedApostle 4h ago

Absolutely.... Thomas Paine covered this...

“Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe. It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime.”

― Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason

1

u/kuroxn 3h ago

Fascists choose whatever group is already hated. Nazis didn't create the antisemitism problem in Germany, they capitalized on it. Same for republicans and transphobia

14

u/DarthKodi 6h ago

For the evangelicals sure but for most Republicans and politicians it's just culture war distraction plain and simple, it's helps galvanize their base for votes. Heres a good post someone made about it that I think is very accurate. Especially with the weird sports argument they always bring up.

"Just for the sake of explaining - under the patriarchy, trans women are vilified more frequently because we openly refute that being male is the obvious, better choice. Trans men often get explained away as "obviously a woman would want to be a man, it's the best possible gender" and sometimes get treated as "men light".

Unable to comprehend why anyone would "choose" to be a woman, because because it's so obviously the "worst", most controlled, sub-class of gender - transphobes start stabbing in the dark for reasons that make sense to them: sexual perversion, mommy issues, mental health, predatory desires, or that trans femmes want to use their "obviously better" male genetics to "unfairly" compete against cis women.

Julia Serano does a pretty good job unpacking all this. Talia Bhatt is another fav, though she's more rage-y which is kind of cathartic.

What makes me chuckle is how obvious the whole gig is. Too often their very premise starts with (usually unspoken) "men are better at everything" and/or "men are sexual predators". The first is an acknowledgement of misogyny and the second is an acknowledgement of rape culture. Rather than address those, which would mean addressing the patriarchy, they make a scapegoat out of the traitors to masculinity."

4

u/jepcasey 6h ago edited 5h ago

All this is really well said. I think there's a correlation between religion and conservatism too, and conservatism, not religion, is where the obsessive devotion to social hierarchy comes in. Innuendo Studios' "Always a Bigger Fish" from their Alt-Right Playbook series is an incredibly useful essay on how the logic works. The part relevant to this is that they don't believe a world outside the social pyramid is possible, so any attempt at social movement -- collectively towards equity or personally towards the bottom of the pyramid -- is analyzed as a secret strategy for personal advancement to the top somehow. Anyone who claims to want less power is only tricking you so they can steal your power. Any "man who wants to be a woman" has a scheme to lie, cheat, and steal their way past you on the ladder.

Whereas of course any woman would "want to be a man," and all that'd keep her from it is her belief that she is shamefully less than that, so we better reinforce that too.

12

u/CQd444 6h ago

...no, they just think it's weird sexual deviancy. Not one of them is gonna cite that thing from 1486 lmao. Get real, man. It isn't that deep.

5

u/TintedApostle 6h ago

Its that the same thinking is taught even today.

10

u/jepcasey 6h ago

It's not really. (Source: I'm both trans and Catholic and was raised through 14 years of Catholic school, then went on to get a degree in sacred literature.) The warning in the Maleficarum is a specific reference to alchemy, which was the early modern expression of what the Church feared from the "wizards" and "magicians" of the Dark Ages. It's much more against the attempt to transmute materials into wealth or power (see also fear of "popery" and Milton's argument that gold is mined from Hell) than any concept of self-transformation.

I've faced transphobia from Christians in my communities and my extended family for twenty years, been taught all the anti-queer BS, and trust, none of these people are even reading or citing the Bible, let alone early modern literature.

1

u/TintedApostle 6h ago

The line is specific to "creature" - so although the entire guide is related to witches and sorcerers the opening to question 1 goes higher to set a premise.

3

u/jepcasey 5h ago

Well, yes, so the endpoint of alchemy was the distillation not of lead into gold, but the apotheosis this represented, the distillation of body into spirit. The "alchemists" of the early modern era were imagined to be seeking immortality. There was this metaphysical ladder imagined to connect the Earth to the heavens, with somas shedding a layer of their material coarseness at each rung of the ascension until they reached heaven as pure spirit. The philosophers and natural scientists of the time believed that on death, the spirit would return through the seven nested crystal spheres, becoming purer with each level. The seven horses with six riders at JFK's funeral were reenacting an early modern military custom where horses carry the spirit through each sphere! ... Anyway... creatures are only supposed to get everlasting life via communion in the Eucharist, and they were probably referring to that as opposed to e.g. cutting one's hair and wearing pants. HRT and SRS to make permanent transitional changes weren't concepts at the time (beyond, like, eunuchs, and the Church baptized eunuchs).

1

u/TintedApostle 5h ago

The line is specific in question 1. Gold isn't a creature.

In the Malleus Maleficarum (1487), a "creature" (creatura) is any being or thing brought into existence by God

Question VIII: Of the Manner whereby they Change Men into the Shapes of Beasts.

• Perfect creatures include complex, higher-order beings like humans and beasts.

• Imperfect creatures include lower animals such as frogs, mice, serpents, and flies, which the text notes can also be generated spontaneously from putrefaction (decay)

3

u/jepcasey 4h ago

You have to read at least to the end of my first sentence, man.

The purification of lead into gold was a metaphor for the purification of body into spirit. The Church condemned alchemists along the same lines as they condemned pagan spirit healers, medicine men, and other practicioners of "spiritual work." The Maleficarum wasn't talking about creatures changing their bodies -- again, the Church baptized eunuchs -- it was talking about occultists promising the type of bodily transformation (from material into eternal spirit or demon) that the Church promised.

5

u/SilverAgedSentiel 6h ago

that's not even in their mind, they don't know religion, they don't know history, they've never read anything beyond hobby and sports.

It's just simply, male superiority, anything they would argue that makes you less of man (Homosexuality,Depression,Emotional Expression) is a sin against the superiority complex. They hate cis women as well, always did.

We call it Christian Nationalism, but truly they don't adhere to any commandment of anything. MAGA doesn't ask where Trump goes to church, they don't care. They don't demand that people in the cult repent their earlier sins (even when they used those accusations against them before they joined MAGA). None of that, there's no religious leaders in MAGA, there's no clerics to espouse the law, the cult is about ignoring the law as much as possible.

1

u/NonFungibleTulip 3h ago

my pet theory is that after the utterly kack-handed handling of COVID-19 IN 2020, and Trump's defeat in that year, GOP political consultants went "anger shopping" to see what would get voters worked up; remember the frothing about kitty litter, CRT, etc?

0

Because their base eats it up

The Supreme Court will sometimes toss some crumbs down to the people on social issues. That way, they can look “balanced” when they provide rulings that support Project 2025 and the billionaire class.

1

u/BenefitAdvanced 1h ago

This. And it works in Trump‘s favor because he gets to get MAGA all riled up because at the end of the day he doesn’t care about this shit at all.

11

u/Peitho_Noir 8h ago

This admin and its backers are out to prove that no entity hates the American people, in all their varied personas and beliefs, more than America itself. Self-hate on a national scale.

21

u/yhwhx 8h ago

Trump's and Musk's America deserves to be hated.

Something that definitely did not deserve the high courts attention but here we are

-1

"Here's your nut liberals, now we can rule Trump can refuse to seat Democratic election winners. "

7

u/Whose_Joanna 4h ago

I guess it doesn't mean much if you're cis, but this is actually a big win for those of us who care about trans rights.

•

u/Competitive-Ad-9404 23m ago

How long do you think those rights last in a dictatorship?

0

u/j01101111sh 1h ago

Yes but also this is to make their extremely partisan rulings more palatable. Both things are true.

•

u/Whose_Joanna 42m ago

Personally, I'll take the wins where I can get them. This is more important to me than most of the cases they hear.

•

u/j01101111sh 33m ago

And I'm not saying you shouldn't. Absolutely. It's just good for people to remember their motive. They're not doing it because they're non partisan and fair. They're doing it to appear non partisan and fair. People (not saying you) get tricked by this and will point to cases like this one as evidence of fairness next time they rule it's legal to arrest people based on race or whatever.

-6

u/Ok-Transition7065 7h ago

Dude, like if you worried about security. Ice has been doing more damage to not even illegal immigrants, to us legal citizens that the potential. That problem could cause... Yeah like some will try to take advantage of this but. It's not. For this kind of solution
