It's why I haven't gotten my tattoo touched up. I was quoted for $500+ for my tattoo touch up and a 25% tip on top of that, just can't afford it.

Edit for Clarification: Apologies on the confusion, my mistake for using the word touch up. My tattoo is 20+ years old, and was looking for quotes to get it redone (touch up), but not a coverup.

They told you your tip had to be 25%? I’ve seen a place before establish the tip percentage for themselves

25% is standard. They're saying they can't afford what is expected.

Not required

It's expected everywhere in the world if you want to continue getting tattooed.

Like... cool... don't tip. That's 100% your decision. It also means you'll have to find a new tattoo artist. And a new one after that. And a new one after that. And a new one after that.

I don’t think you know much about the world. I have multiple tattoos all from the same studio minus maybe two and I’ve never tipped nor is it an expectation

My entire body is tattooed and I've been tattooed in shops across Europe, North America, and Australia. The tipping culture is the same except when an artist explicitly states otherwise.

I LIVE in Europe, I’ve gotten tattoos in Asia as well I know multiple people with tattoos and artists idk what places you’re going to but it’s not a cultural expectation to tip artists. We pay for the service thank them and leave

Guess I've just been more thankful to my artists. You do you.

It’s funny how Americans assume their culture should be standard and anyone who differs is just not as developed or nice as them. Our artists know not to take advantage of their customers but you do you

Why not just roll that into the price then?

-1

u/ggggofast 9h ago

Because that's not the price. You don't have to tip.

But also... what difference would that even make? Why are you people so ass hurt over situations you will never find yourself in? Fuckin christ.

I think ya’ll should just tell people how much money you want for the work and then those people pay that and everyone is happy

-1

u/ggggofast 9h ago

What difference would that make? Do you seriously not understand the desire to get tipped in cash?

2

u/IllegalDaycare 9h ago

Because it makes way more sense. If I hire a plumber to fix my sink and he charges me 100 bucks I pay him 100 dollars. He doesn’t look at me expecting more. It is just simple communication.

A tip should be extra. It should never be expected. If it is expected than it should be listed as part of the price.

“Paying 1/5th of the bill extra to the one who provided you service is standard”

No it’s not and never has been stfu

25% is 1/4th.

In certain industries it is standard to tip up to 25%

Fat fingers

Point is still

Tips were never meant to rise with inflation, because 10% of something will always go up with the inflation, you don’t need to adjust for it.

10-15% is the max any tip should be, and it shouldn’t be expected, especially outside of food service.

1

u/airboRN_82 2h ago

15-20% has been standard for waiters for a while. Skilled trades like barbers and tattoo artists always were a bit higher

1

u/ThatGuyLuis 1h ago

That’s just what you believe in your head, it’s not a requirement or law and it shouldn’t be expected as your compensation since that’s not what it’s for.

u/ggggofast 9h ago

No it’s not and never has been stfu

Okay then :)

Don't tip your tattoo artist :)

Just plan on finding a new one... and a new one after that... and a new one after that... and a new one after that... and a new one after that...

Funny, 5 years with my artist, him being super happy if I bring him a few snacks and we enjoy every tattoo session.

Why would I need to go to a new tattoo shop ?

If I want, I’ll go back and ask for another price, I’ll compare it to other designs and other artists, because that’s how the free market works.

Tips aren’t required, otherwise they’re called fees.

u/SchwizzySchwas94 9h ago

You just really seem to not be getting it.

1

u/quayle-man 9h ago

Tipping then doesn’t make their work any better. Theres a local artist here who has good reviews, I’ve used him a couple times and each time had my design already made and I just asked him for a price to do it. Paid him whatever he asked and tipped him well to. But his work was not worthy of even the base price I paid.

u/M1dj37 9h ago

This shit isn’t like going out to eat. The artist sets the price. If they want 750 instead of 500 fucking say something. The tips in America are for paying the unpaid wage of a worker. Does the artist not get paid for the art already? What the fuck am I tipping for? The expected result? Am I supposed to reward someone extra for… doing the job I’ve already paid for?

2

u/CheGueyMaje 9h ago

Yanks are such bootlickers it’s insane lmao, you tip your landlords too or what?

1

u/epelle9 9h ago

Holy fuck why is that so high? What are you paying for then?

1

u/SlabsForDays 9h ago

Lol i need a tip for doing muh job. Get out of here with that nonsense especially for a tattoo place.

1

u/teefdoll 9h ago

20% is standard, it always has been. Idk why it’d raise when prices have raised as well.

1

u/quayle-man 9h ago

15% is the standard tip
