I really hope EA sells the IPs to a decent dev.

Nothing these companies love doing more than sitting on IPs and letting it die, it’s over for Mass Effect

It's a very bad look if you sell (or lease) your IP and then someone else makes a hit game with it, but not you. Look at what it took to get another Obsidian Fallout game - Microsoft owning both Obsidian and Bethesda AND basically telling them "you're working on Fallout now". When Obsidian have been on record for years saying that they would want to return to that universe.

I mean, another Obsidian Fallout game isn't really something I have a particular desire for at this point. Obsidians last 3 games (Outer Worlds 1 and 2, Avowed) were... not great. Like, nothing specifically wrong with any of them, just kind of felt soulless and bland. Bringing that kind of energy to a new Fallout game would take away pretty much all of the best parts of that franchise.

Obsidian has always ....ALWAYS excelled at working with others IPs. But have always struggled on working on their own new IPs:

Alpha Protocol to Avowed is a prime example.

I'm probably in the minority - but I liked Alpha Protocol for what it was, and always thought Bioware could have made a potentially great franchise of it

Edit: Typo

Obsidian didn’t want to make a new fallout just yet. They specifically wanted to work on their own original IPs. In fact I’d say they’re more angry than anything considering their pipeline has now been put on indefinite hold just so they could make more fallout

Obsidian wasn't allowed another chance for good reason. New Vegas was completely unfinished. unfinished map quests and content aside it didn't even launch day one on consoles. Unforgivable in an age without guaranteed internet. It was an inch from complete disaster, if it wasn't so good with cult fans it could have killed the entire series.

Fanboys and people too young to remember please form a line for down votes to the left.

New Vegas was a huge hit at launch though

Like with general audiences

That's some revisionist history if I've ever heard one. "killed the entire series" lol. New Vegas reviewed extremely well, both critically and by fans. Yes, it was extremely buggy. This was/is nothing new for Bethesda fans. Arguably, the blame on that falls on Bethesda as well, as they famously gave Obsidian only 18 months from start to finish, no delays.

If they followed their own contracts, we'd be on Elder Scrolls 15-ish.

NV was not reviewed well at launch and Obsidian accepted the 18 month contract without asking for a revision which they were allowed to do

I reviewed it well as did many others.

Not launching on consoles is more than "buggy". You're just making shit up.

I figure whats more likely after the Saudi Arabia’s majority ownership take-over of EA is that IPs like ME will be converted into live-service (or mobile) slop titles to milk mtx and battlepass revenue until there's no remaining fanbase to milk.

I mean, that's not true, at all, re: "these companies" in general (i.e. game publishers).

That's EA specifically. Every other publisher out there is willing to licence out or sell off IPs, especially ones they haven't made a game for like a decade or more.

But EA are weird, and have famously sat on IPs - people talk about the "EA vault".

The question is, does being taken over by greedy PE fucks change that equation? Maybe those people, whilst they're stripping the copper wiring out of the walls, will think to sell off the unused IPs?

Don't lose hope. When Lionhead went out and Fable was lost, I spent years thinking it would never come back. And lo and behold, we're getting a new game in just 4 months!

•

u/GeneralSEOD 6h ago

Then you get Warhammer, who seemingly give their IP to everyone and we get 1 game for every 10 that are beyond Trash.

•

u/Cupcakes_n_Hacksaws 5h ago

Mass Effect's universe is interesting enough, personally I think there's plenty of potential of games for it outside of the genre of the trilogy

There is no guarantee there will be an EA 2 years from now.

well, with private equity owning EA, and adding billions of dollars of debt to EA's books, they might not have a choice. Either that, or EA itself might be next for shutting down.
