It's a very bad look if you sell (or lease) your IP and then someone else makes a hit game with it, but not you. Look at what it took to get another Obsidian Fallout game - Microsoft owning both Obsidian and Bethesda AND basically telling them "you're working on Fallout now". When Obsidian have been on record for years saying that they would want to return to that universe.
I mean, another Obsidian Fallout game isn't really something I have a particular desire for at this point. Obsidians last 3 games (Outer Worlds 1 and 2, Avowed) were... not great. Like, nothing specifically wrong with any of them, just kind of felt soulless and bland. Bringing that kind of energy to a new Fallout game would take away pretty much all of the best parts of that franchise.
I'm probably in the minority - but I liked Alpha Protocol for what it was, and always thought Bioware could have made a potentially great franchise of it
Obsidian didn’t want to make a new fallout just yet. They specifically wanted to work on their own original IPs. In fact I’d say they’re more angry than anything considering their pipeline has now been put on indefinite hold just so they could make more fallout
Obsidian wasn't allowed another chance for good reason. New Vegas was completely unfinished. unfinished map quests and content aside it didn't even launch day one on consoles. Unforgivable in an age without guaranteed internet. It was an inch from complete disaster, if it wasn't so good with cult fans it could have killed the entire series.
Fanboys and people too young to remember please form a line for down votes to the left.
That's some revisionist history if I've ever heard one. "killed the entire series" lol. New Vegas reviewed extremely well, both critically and by fans. Yes, it was extremely buggy. This was/is nothing new for Bethesda fans. Arguably, the blame on that falls on Bethesda as well, as they famously gave Obsidian only 18 months from start to finish, no delays.
If they followed their own contracts, we'd be on Elder Scrolls 15-ish.
I figure whats more likely after the Saudi Arabia’s majority ownership take-over of EA is that IPs like ME will be converted into live-service (or mobile) slop titles to milk mtx and battlepass revenue until there's no remaining fanbase to milk.
I mean, that's not true, at all, re: "these companies" in general (i.e. game publishers).
That's EA specifically. Every other publisher out there is willing to licence out or sell off IPs, especially ones they haven't made a game for like a decade or more.
But EA are weird, and have famously sat on IPs - people talk about the "EA vault".
The question is, does being taken over by greedy PE fucks change that equation? Maybe those people, whilst they're stripping the copper wiring out of the walls, will think to sell off the unused IPs?
Don't lose hope. When Lionhead went out and Fable was lost, I spent years thinking it would never come back. And lo and behold, we're getting a new game in just 4 months!
well, with private equity owning EA, and adding billions of dollars of debt to EA's books, they might not have a choice. Either that, or EA itself might be next for shutting down.
My hope is CDPR snatches it up, they not only have the RPG creds necessary for BioWare's IPs, but they also have a deep history with BioWare who helped them get off their feet when they started out and made Witcher 1.
They will literally never, ever, ever, sell the IP. American McGee tried for like a decade to get rights to his IP from EA to make another game before giving up lmao.
Failing to utilize an IP should put it up for auction automatically. It's beyond daft that a company can buy the rights to an idea and then never use it.

I really hope EA sells the IPs to a decent dev.
