Does anyone know... Is there any chance someone else could get the rights to mass effect one day and take a shot at it? Kinda like what happened with baldurs gate 3

•

u/Expensive_Manager211 8h ago

I imagine that EA owns the rights to Mass Effect. They could have a 5th game developed by a different studio or outsource it. If they think it would be worth the investment ME5 could definitely happen.

They just might have to totally start over.

•

u/FriendlyRhyme 8h ago

Okay well now my dream game is a CDPR made mass effect. The odds are probably .01% but that won't stop me from hoping.

•

u/pikazec 7h ago

It’s set to release the week after HL3

•

u/Messyfingers 7h ago

I don't think it's entirely unrealistic for that to happen really. CDPR has been expanding a lot since Cyberpunk released. And because they thrive on narrative RPGs, if EA decides to sell the mass effect IP(they just nuked BioWare, so they clearly have no plans to do anything with it themselves) I wouldn't be surprised if they're the ones who pick it up.

•

u/Churro_212 7h ago

Sadly we have seen in before that EA prefers close studios, keep the rights of the IPs and do nothing with them, like C&C and Americans Mcgee's Alice

•

u/123ludwig 5h ago

to be fair its fully possible no one is willing to pay whateer c&c is worth

•

u/singlemale4cats 4h ago

There's the rub. If no one's willing to pay their ask, it's not worth what they think it is.

•

u/BeyondImpressive2558 1h ago

Don’t forget… Titanfall 😕

•

u/Ok-Read4007 6h ago edited 6h ago

Eh, pretty hard to imagine CDPR being willing to spend money just to obtain IP rights instead of just developing their own setting.

Especially given that the IPs primary conflict has been solved (in a fairly controversial way) and the narrative is pretty tricky to continue.

•

u/dragonknightrohan 4h ago

Well if we all spread the word maybe CDPR can buy Mass Effect, and also Larian can buy Dragon Age.

Disney can re-release KOTOR, and the rest of the games picked up by other studios too.

What we push for will make it happen even more

•

u/T-VIRUS999 1h ago

Disney is just as bad as EA

•

u/Expensive_Manager211 7h ago

That would be really cool ngl but I think CDPR is too bogged down with their own production pipeline. Witcher IV, Witcher 1 remake, 2077 sequel and a new IP. But never say never I would love for them to take a Crack at it.

•

u/NastyVerde17 5h ago

The odds actually aren’t that low. Studios ears should perk up when they hear this news. Gamers everywhere will be sad and alot of developers now grew up on mass effect so I think there’s plenty of studios that are still passionate about storytelling that would feel like it’s their duty to give it the mass effect universe the legs it should have. I’m pretty optimistic

•

u/Beastw1ck 4h ago

What about Larian's take on Mass Effect?

•

u/singlemale4cats 4h ago

It would be hard to replicate the vibe of the first three, which is one of the reasons I like them so much.

•

u/greatreference 3h ago

It’s way less than that lol

•

u/SCI-FIWIZARDMAN 2h ago

Hope is the one thing they can never take away from you, so long as you refuse to let go of it.

•

u/Buburubu 2h ago

ooh, that’d be a good one. i’d also accept Larian or Firaxis.

•

u/pjj13 9m ago

Na, CD project no es bueno con las decisiones ni sabe hacer juegos con compañeros como ME.

•

u/MovieNightPopcorn 5h ago

Tbh I don’t think I would trust CDPR to do it well. Cyberpunk is great and all but they have never made that kind of straightforward narrative third person shooter game. They make open world games, and that’s not Mass Effect. They also have never implemented a conversation system with serious effects on in-game outcomes the way Paragon/Renegade was done before. Cyberpunk in particular had very few decisions which had any effect on the game other than what was effectively flavor text.

•

u/SwaggermicDaddy 8h ago

If we think a game company ran by Saudi Arabia, Jared kushner and American maga interests would be anywhere near the quality of mass effect and not just “Birth of a Nation.” IN SPAACCEEE we are lying to ourselves.

•

u/Aerith_Sunshine 7h ago

Yeah, no thanks. I'd rather it just stay in its grave.

•

u/FUCKYOUIamBatman 7h ago

With the way people have been cracking and rebuilding games/PS5 lately, it’s never been easier for people to code games. It’s reasonable to think that a team of gamers could just build a their own and post it openly. This is just hypothetical but it’s interesting to think what the future of gaming is gonna look like now. People have been trying to work through Anthem but it’s been slow. Now, if they can work through all the encoding bs or whatever the issues are, then we can have Open Anthem, so to speak. Then a team of vibecoders could recreate ME3 so I can go back to blasting Geth and slingin biotics at Marauders with the squad. Maybe we get a solid team with writers to make a new ME altogether. I’m very hopeful.

•

u/Aerith_Sunshine 7h ago

Well, you're not wrong. Mass Effect also has a huge, very passionate fanbase. Still, this is a sore blow to those of us who wanted to be Paragons in Spaaaaace!

•

u/CruffTheMagicDragon 8h ago

They wouldn’t be starting over since it seems nothing has been accomplished yet

•

u/Scutty__ 8h ago

I think if they had any plans to release that game they wouldn't have killed bioware

•

u/Expensive_Manager211 7h ago

Or Bioware failed to meet expectations. Downsizing is the order of the day sadly. I dont love EA but as other people have been saying for a decade+ the modern Bioware was not anything resembling the old BG or ME teams.

Never say never though, EA isn't going to pass on a chance to make money

•

u/FuckMyBakaChungusLif 6h ago

They wouldn't have cancelled the project if that was the case, they would have transferred the currently completed stuff over to a different studio, which they didn't do

•

u/ABrazilianReasons 4h ago

Its not like Bioware was handling their franchises all that well

•

u/imposterfish 5h ago

After Andromeda, “worth the investment” is a tough guess. It really depends how many good, usable assets they had in their early development of the game.

•

u/Infinite_Incident107 6h ago

Part of it might depend on how much early development got completed. They did announce the title in 2020. No doubt for a few years there was likely only small progress made. I don't recall hearing anything concrete about the progress that was made.

But the series is popular. If they see that there was decent progress and solid plans already laid out it might be worth it for them to not waste what's already done and give it to another internal team. We can hope at least.

•

u/MoistExcrement1989 3h ago

Damn so the ME5 we were suppose to get is effectively cancelled? And if it gets picked up again it be like another 10yrs of be pushing 50 by then.

•

u/Interne-Stranger 30m ago

EA owns it? Mass Effect is dead then

•

u/pjj13 7m ago

•

u/RedHairGoldHalos 8h ago

•

u/Shenloanne 8h ago

Yup. Dragon syndrome.

•

u/FutureOpen9405 7h ago

I hope in the future smaller studios stop selling themselves to larger ones. It is the same result over and over again. I get that the influx of big money seems like a god send, but all it takes is one game not being a hit and then the downhill journey begins

•

u/Time-Valuable-3355 6h ago

If a smaller studio goes public there is nothing stopping a larger company from buying majority shares and taking control.

•

u/FutureOpen9405 5h ago

Yeah-- hence not going public. That's the choice I'm saying not to do. Small studios should stay private and look for alternative funding. Easier said than done of course.

•

u/Time-Valuable-3355 5h ago

I agree. Too much lost talent...

•

u/CzarTyr 8h ago

Baldurs gate was never owned by ea. its dungeons and dragons

•

u/levajack 6h ago edited 6h ago

That's the difference, and why Mass Effect is almost surely dead now. BG was licensed not owned by BioWare, whereas Mass Effect is their IP. I would be shocked if EA sold ME. The only hope is another EA studio is handed ME to develop a new game, but if that was the plan, why shutter BW when they were (supposedly) actively working on it.

•

u/Scutty__ 8h ago

There's a chance but companies rarely sell IPs

•

u/FriendlyRhyme 8h ago

I wonder why that is. On the off chance they want to do something with it eventually?

•

u/derango 8h ago

It costs them nothing to hold and they stop other people from being able to make competing games.

•

u/Scutty__ 6h ago

Theres a few reasons, one is they can go back to it in the future. Another is selling it is basically giving their competitors a developed ip. Owning the trademarks is technically an asset in their portfolio that's worth an amount of money and go towards company worth for shareholders etc.

The other reason is probably its a lot of legal effort to deal with for not very much reward. They dont sell for a lot of money in the grand scheme of AAA games

That's even if theres a buyer who really wants to buy it anyway and willing to spend an amount that's worth it. But the second EA hears someone else is interested suddenly the price will go up

•

u/GapStock9843 8h ago

In theory yes, but considering EA owns the rights the chances are astronomically slim

•

u/Diogenes_the_cynic25 8h ago

Doubt, EA seems okay just letting their dead IPs sit. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are both dead.

•

u/BlackJimmy88 8h ago

If they sell them, perhaps. Unless that happens, all of Bioware's IPs will remain in the hands of EA and the slave state that owns them.

•

u/Still_Count1553 7h ago

Sure, the could sell them off or even allow studios to pitch ideas to them. Like how konami is doing with it's franchises.

•

u/LettuceObjective627 7h ago

They wouldnt even sell the rights to Alice, they sure as hell wont give this away.

•

u/3FistedHumdinger 7h ago

Bioware never had rights ownership of Baldur's Gate. They were licensed by TSR (later WotC, later Hasbro).

•

u/youessbee 7h ago

Doubtful. If the TV series is still going on then they will lose out.

•

u/zak55 7h ago

They have a shit ton of debt so I imagine they'll offload it. The Amazon show will probably spur interest and if it's like the Fallout show, will help the IP.

•

u/DirectorKrenn1c 7h ago

I say let the series go to rest, don’t give it to a studio and let them try and meet extremely high expectations and possibly fail.

•

u/Real_Batu_Rem 7h ago

Would love Larian to get ahold of the IP.

•

u/Due-Ball-3090 7h ago

Zero. BG3 rights never left anyone's hands, they were always owned by the original IP holders, Wizards of the Coast. BG1 and 2 were licensed.

Mass Effect is gonna end up on the pile of private-equity owned IPs that are dead forever and illegal to produce any content for even for free. See what T2 did to Kerbals.

I expect EA to shut down all their studios and themselves, cause after the new Saudi owners acquired them they proceeded to shut down the money tap due to the current events.

•

u/Malignantt1 7h ago

Its best to not get your hopes up. This happens a lot in modern gaming and nothing ever comes from it

•

u/MANvINFO 7h ago

make a new property called ‘Gas Eject’ about a Colander Shipyard, to make ends meet save money by hiring voice talent who mispronounce every proper noun in the story.

•

u/Commander_Shepard-ME 7h ago

not a single chance. both my favorite franchises, Dead Space and Mass Effect are owned by these fucks and have been put in ice.

5 years from now they're gonna give the game rights to motive and make them develop a remake, I'm calling it

•

u/Objective_Might2820 7h ago

EA owns the rights to Mass Effect. And they won’t sell them. They’re too valuable to sell. EA is gonna lock them away and never use them.

Mass Effect…is dead.

•

u/ManimalR 7h ago

EA holds on to IPs like a dragon guarding it's horde. It;s why Command & Conquer is still trapped in limbo.

Best chance is that EA will collapse at some point at which point all of their IPs will get sold off.

•

u/MrLeHah N7 6h ago

: Laughs in Wing Commander :

•

u/FetusGoesYeetus 6h ago

Best case scenario is EA gets I to financial trouble and needs to sell off IPs

BG3 was a different scenario because WotC owned the rights to them, Bioware was just the developer. Same goes for BG3, Larian made it but WotC owns it.

•

u/Impossible-Flight250 6h ago

Probably eventually. It is probably best just to forget about it, though. It might be 20 years before we ever get anything from that franchise again.

•

u/una322 6h ago

lol no. EA hold loads of ip they just hord and do nothing wtih . Dead space, CnC , Sim city, dungeon keeper ext, list goes on

•

u/PSavage88 6h ago

Its possible but from what i understand, EA doesnt have the best history when it comes to selling off IPs to companies interested.

•

u/BBQslave 6h ago

Microsoft bought Lionhead, dismantled it, and now we have Fable 4 coming next year. It just took two decades ...

There's the Fallout/Bethesda thing too

I don't know why they would squash such a popular franchise but honestly wtf do I know. I'm just some guy

•

u/Sushiv_ 5h ago

Aren’t we getting a new KOTOR game?

•

u/Agitated-Summer-6047 4h ago

I could see a scenario where Amazon continues with the production of the Mass Effect Show, the Show is a massive success and people call for a new Game.

Very unlikely, but a girl can dream :/

•

u/Swiftzor 4h ago

It’s possible, my money though is it won’t happen. We saw something similar with Dead Space a couple years back where the remake sold 5x the original yet it still wasn’t profitable enough despite the second game having the first part done and ready. For context once you reach this point you’ve got around 40% of the work done.

It’s not about the games being good or profitable, it’s about his much they need to spend to how much they can make. The only thing we’ve seen is the recent Battlefield crossover, which is funny in its own right.

I don’t see ME getting picked back up internally, largely because of how LGBT positive BioWare and its games are at their core. I see this as private equity doing its work and there being an aspect to this happen to be what I saw on Twitter being “the 911 for queer gamers” a positive side effect and less a core aspect here.

If anything the best we can see is a licensing agreement, but I also don’t know if it’s feasible because of how much money it might cost where for less you can just do a new thing inspired by Mass Effect or Dragon Age or whatever.

•

u/Left_Ease5870 3h ago

Lol maybe.

But Mass effect has been dead since they shut the doors to the Andromeda dev team. It's time to accept it.

•

u/Lepelotonfromager 2h ago

The rights don't magically disappear. If there is profit to be made, they'll be sold to someone and used.

•

u/Comprehensive_End592 2h ago

Very unlikely. If they were going to sell or lease out the IP they would have just sold Bioware,
IP's themselves have a lot of value, EA will probably just sit on it until they go out of business.

•

u/Kind-Custard974 1h ago

Honestly I’m so heartbroken, Mass Effect is my favourite series and I was following this for years I was actually was one of the people who wanted one more big adventure with the cast of the original trilogy including Shepard coming back as the main character one last time.

I know it’s just a game but it was a work of art.
