Back in the day.

• Upvotes

I remember AAA games coming out every two years from the same developer maybe a bit longer. They would make money because everyone would buy the games, very simple.

Now AAA games come out every 10 to 12 years and it sort of confuses me because if they could push out great games in a few year span and make a bunch of money why wouldn’t they want to keep that up?

Why make 100 million dollars every 10 years when you could do it every 2-3 years.

I bought Star Citizen 15 years ago, I want my money back or they can buy me a new fucking PC.

So like, any globally defacto games today?

Speaking not even out of nostalgia, I can't really think of any 'good' defacto games out today. To be particular, I'm talking like the era of you just hop online, get in the group chat, and then play the evening away. The game that no one asked if you wanted to play, we saw someone had it on and we just jump in. The games that even if it wasn't quite your thing you didn't have to be convinced to play. Halo 1-Reach, Killzone 1-2, Battlefield 2-4, Need for Speed Underground-Carbon, 2000's Battlefront, L4D 2, Little Big Planet, M.A.G., Smash Bros, the type of shit that you never actually questioned if anyone had because everyone* did.

I feel like in today's market we just simply don't have such the game anymore. Too much lends into veteran privilege or pay2win like say Battlefield where unless if you've played the game for years or buy the skip then you're just objectively worse because the entire lobby just simply has better numbers than you. -OR- specialization into their genre alienates players that aren't actually into those games. Like I might convince some friends to buy Forza Horizon over Gran Turismo but unless they already would enjoy something more detailed than racing in Halo, Fortnite, or Mario Kart then I'd probably have to herd the group like sheep to actually play together.

And that's ignoring how many games are just hard limited to 2-4 player teams now in anything with matchmaking. If you want 4-8 you're looking at friendslop and probably with mods. If you want 3-5 (usually 3) then you're shunted into 15 year old FPS /Extraction hell or low population party games. If you want little to no such restriction then you get into MASS games like FF XIV, Fall Guys, or Minecraft. Want something that at least lets you play with other people AND has good story/balance? Now you're in hyper co-op like It Takes Two.

I can't seem to find any game that just has good, repeatable multiplayer; doesn't care why there's 2 Master Chiefs standing there; and isn't and indie game that no one has heard of/AA game that runs but is infested with bugs which ultimately lead to a tiny playerbase (relatively) like Angels Fall First or Mechwarrior Online/5: Mercenaries and Clans.

The best I can seem to come up with is Helldivers, but we all know why that doesn't really make the cut either. Me and mine have been enjoying Jump Space well enough, but like DRG it can certainly get stale after awhile of back-to-back runs for hours. The only other thing that comes to mind might be Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer mod, and that's neither really ready yet netcode wise nor all too supportive from start to finish of the game atm.

So am I just in the dark since the gaming world is sooo much bigger now and choked by AAA advertising with everyone competing for my wallet & time, are the good games out there just hidden gems that may not have looked good on face value? Or have we really lost our core hangout&play games to corporate enshittification of the industry? Me and mine have had so much more in the way of boardgames and tabletop roleplay out of not really being jazzed about anything in particular; which isn't a bad thing, there's great stuff out there these days. But it's weird not immediately hoping on the game that our friend is playing while in the VC.

Could 2027-2028 Bring Another Video Game Crash?

Hey, Redditors! Am I the only one who thinks we might be heading toward another video game crash like the one in 1983?

Seriously, where is the innovation? I can’t remember the last time there were more than a few AAA projects released in a years that didn’t launch with a bag full of bugs, require massive patches, run poorly, or rely on frame generation just to reach playable frame rates. We have incredible game-engine technology, yet optimization feels worse than ever. Hardware prices also make upgrading difficult: spending more than a thousands dollars on a mid-range GPU and RAM can make you wonder whether it would be better to keep playing on a PS3.

I'm tired of endless cinematic cutscenes, boring stories, unfinished releases, and games that feel more like political lectures than entertainment. Sometimes I just want a good story, fun gameplay, and an escape from this dark world where everything seems to be falling into a void, even if only for a short while.

Games taking too long to make and being too expensive to produce means every studio loses.

Why can't developers and publishers see this? Games taking half a decade to make while costing over 100+ million to make is a losing strategy. Recent Bioware closure among other studios over the past year supports this. The only ones who seem to have their heads on straight is Nintendo and Capcom with their strong release schedule.

Seriously, what happened to make the gaming sphere like this? Multiple bubbles are popping making a hell of a wave.

One example I suspect many other share is that Fallout: New Vegas was correct that the ancient Romans did not pronounce the letter C with an "S" sound, so Caesars name is pronounced with a "K" sound. There's other examples, I didn't know what ichor was before playing Monkey Island.

What multiplayer game has the least toxic community?

Does a game exist that isn't full of racism and slurs in the online community?

I'm tired of it. Really, really tired.

I can't think of game that has online multiplayer that isn't full of it. I'm 48, been a gamer since I was 8, and have seen and heard it all. I get that it's mostly done by kids (teens and early-mid twenties) that are trying to get a rise out of people by saying something "edgy."

I'm tired of reporting people, just for it to go nowhere.

Mostly, I'm tired of seeing "regular" people just ignore it. I'm tired of seeing comments like "just don't play if it bothers you that much," or "just turn off chats."

No. I'm not going to let someone take away a part of the game I enjoy because they can't behave like a civil person. I love talking trash when appropriate. I like it when they do it back. If you can't find a way to talk trash without slurs and such nonsense, how about you don't play. If you wouldn't say it person, don't say it online.

I'm going to give two examples of how I (and some of my friends) have started dealing with it.

  1. Wardogs - I'm loving the game. Once they figure out how to manage cheaters it will be even better. If you are unaware, it's a "milsim" game, kind of between Arma and Battlefield. If you get shot/go down, your teammates get a pretty long time to revive you (respawning takes a while).

Basically, if I hear you say something racist (or a slur), I'm going to blast you in the text chat. I'm going to let everyone know what kind of person you are. If you go down and are on my team, I'm going to let you know why I'm not going to revive you. I'm going to ask others to not revive you. It works too. I've had others join me and say "ya, to heck with that. I'm not reviving a racist either."

I've seen people get big mad at me when no one on the team will help them anymore, and start calling me names. lol. They soon quit. Not sure if they just switch servers or quit entirely. Don't care.

  1. Rocket League - Great game, horrible community. This one has been around long enough you already know how it is.

Basically, if a teammate says something horrible, or has "one of those" names, I give them a choice. I tell them they can take the "L" now and forfeit, or in five minutes. I will make sure we don't win. I have no problem wasting their time. I can play really bad without "griefing."

TLDR: Quit ignoring it. Stand up to it. We outnumber the racist scum by a lot. Make them feel unwanted. Shame them out.

If you know of a fun online game, preferably a shooter of some kind, that isn't full of this nonsense let me know please.

For me, it’s the full package: exciting gameplay, amazing visuals, a great atmosphere, pure spectacle, and – most importantly – a real sense of fun. It feels like a game from the PS2 era in its absolute prime, brought back with modern production values.

And, of course, the music is on another level. It elevates every mission and makes even the most ridiculous moments feel genuinely epic.

It’s everything I’ve been missing in gaming for a long time. If you’re still on the fence, just try it. It genuinely reminded me why I fell in love with games in the first place.

I have attached the main theme, please, do yourself a favour and give it a shot :)

- two huge launches coming up with Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.

- Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project

- More info about a brand-new, social-first open-world experience for our American Football team that we call "Project Gridiron," and Fight Night in the upcoming months

- focusing on the long-term potential of The Sims and skate.

Hot Take: Let the gaming industry crash

Just like nature when it needs to balance itself out, a forest fire happens.

Burn everything to the ground and Noah's flood the market for gaming. This will make triple A companies abandon ship and go somewhere else. Sure most indies devs would also get burned but it's a sacrificial collateral and might be for the good.

We have indies that constantly shove out slop, and now Ai makes the height of entry to game developments much lower. So many more clone slops just to chase new trends are getting churned out by the day. Triple A slopifying their games just to chase trends aswell.

I feel like some kind of purge to chase away or make most slop companies to turn away from gaming would be a best way for the hobby to reboot.

EA Laying Off 3% of Employees in Studios Restructuring: BioWare Shutting Down, Respawn and DICE to Team on ‘Star Wars: Battlefront 3’

BREAKING:

Videogame giant Electronic Arts, in its first major move since going private this summer, is restructuring its studios business — which will result in layoffs of about 3% of global workforce.

The updates to EA’s studios operations were outlined in a memo to EA employees Wednesday from Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and COO. “Over the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at our business, how we operate, and what it will take to lead in this next era of interactive entertainment,” the execs said. (Read the full memo below.)

Among the big changes: Games studio BioWare is shutting down after EA decided to pull the plug on its development of a new “Mass Effect” title. The company will close BioWare’s Canadian office in Edmonton. “BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly,” Weber and Tinson said.

EA last reported 14,500 employees, meaning the layoffs affect around 400 staffers.

In more upbeat news, Weber and Tinson touted first-person shooter “Battlefield 6” as “a great success, and we learned a lot from the launch and the live service.” Going forward, in addition to future “Battlefield” titles, the execs said “we’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.” While they did not identify the project, multiple sources confirmed that this is “Star Wars: Battlefront 3″ for Lucasfilm.

EA also will continue to “invest heavily” in the “Apex Legends” franchise over the next few years, with plans to introduce new gameplay modes in multiplayer, along with other new experiences.

Elsewhere in the action-adventure segment, EA remains committed delivering on “our two huge launches coming up,” the execs said: “Marvel’s Iron Man” and the next “Star Wars Jedi” game.

At EA Sports, there are two new projects in development that will be revealed over the next few months, including a new, “social-first open-world experience for our American Football team that we call ‘Project Gridiron,'” the execs said. The studio also is in pre-production to bring back fan-favorite boxing game “Fight Night” after a 15-year hiatus.

Finally, in the lifestyle category, “we’re focusing on the long-term potential” of “The Sims” and skateboarding title “Skate.”, the EA execs wrote. “We’re going to prioritize our efforts on ‘Project Evergreen’ for The Sims to give the team more time to reach the full potential and vision for the game, and to help make this possible, we’re pausing development on ‘Project Lotus,’” they said. For “Skate.”, EA is “making changes to the studio to have a more focused, smaller team to deliver on a very clear roadmap for our community that we believe will build a healthier and more sustainable business,” the execs wrote.

On Aug. 4, EA closed the announced private-equity deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners in an all-cash transaction valued at $55 billion.

Read the memo from Weber and Tinson:

Hi Team,

First, thank you.

Through every major moment we’ve faced as a company, your commitment to creating awesome games and experiences for our players continues to be impressive. Together, we’ve built epic worlds and global communities that are part of the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Today, we’re the number one publisher in Western HD gaming. That’s an extraordinary position to lead from, and one we should be proud of. Yet our industry is changing quickly. Players have more choices than ever for their time and attention, competition is intensifying, and some of our biggest opportunities for growth are beyond the markets, platforms, and business models where EA has traditionally been the strongest.

That’s why, over the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at our business, how we operate, and what it will take to lead in this next era of interactive entertainment. We’ve challenged assumptions, confronted hard realities, imagined new possibilities, and made deliberate choices in order to deliver exceptional experiences for our players and to drive sustained growth.

We believe our best creative work happens when we’re clear about what matters most for our players and give our teams the freedom to move quickly. So, we’re concentrating our teams, technology, and investment behind these three strategic priorities.

  • Deepen Our Core: Our greatest opportunity starts with our franchises and global communities that have made EA a leader in interactive entertainment. This is where we’ve had to make our hardest choices. Saying no to some things we’re passionate about allows us to focus our teams and resources so we give our biggest opportunities everything they need to succeed.
  • Expand Our Reach: The strength of our core business creates an enormous opportunity to reach more players across new platforms, markets, and business models. As one example, in regions as dynamic as Asia, success means building experiences that reflect local players, cultures, and expectations.
  • Transform Our Business: We believe we can use our experience building interactive entertainment, together with our relationships in sports, to create entirely new ways for fans to engage with the teams, athletes and sports they love. These will be disciplined investments that only scale when they demonstrate real potential.

These priorities will bring clarity and focus to your work every day, and so will the way we work. We’ve spent time listening to teams about what’s working, what’s getting in the way, and what you need to do your best work. The feedback was consistent: you want clearer priorities, faster decisions, and teams that work more closely together. We’ve already begun simplifying how we work so we can spend more time creating and innovating for our players.

Our Portfolio Choices

Across our portfolio, we’re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth.

In our Shooters business***,*** Battlefield 6 was a great success, and we learned a lot from the launch and the live service. We’re going to take those learnings, balance our resources, and leverage the technology to deliver a shooter portfolio that unlocks growth. In addition to our future Battlefield titles, we’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project that will help us achieve that ambition. We can’t wait to share more when the time comes. We’re also continuing to invest heavily in Apex over the next few years by introducing brand new gameplay modes in multiplayer, and other new experiences, to expand the universe.

Action-adventure is one of the most competitive and high-stakes genres in the industry, where every game needs our full weight behind it. We’re continuing to deliver on our two huge launches coming up with Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game. Beyond that, we will concentrate our efforts on fewer simultaneous, large-scale projects, ensuring that every game we build in this space is fully set up for success.

As we focus on these larger opportunities, we’ve had a small team at BioWare working on early-development for Mass Effect. We’ve made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we’re closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace. BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly.

EA SPORTS continues to operate from a position of strength. We are fully committed and investing in the global growth of our FC franchise and across the full EA SPORTS portfolio. We have two new projects in development you’ll hear about over the next few months, including a brand-new, social-first open-world experience for our American Football team that we call “Project Gridiron,” and we are also in pre-production to bring back a beloved, fan-favorite in Fight Night, leveraging capabilities from our simulation fighting team.

In Lifestyle, we’re focusing on the long-term potential of The Sims and skate. We’re going to prioritize our efforts on “Project Evergreen” for The Sims to give the team more time to reach the full potential and vision for the game, and to help make this possible, we’re pausing development on “Project Lotus.” For skate., we’ve had a lot of success in bringing players into the game, and we need to create an experience that keeps them engaged over the long-term. To do that, we are making changes to the studio to have a more focused, smaller team to deliver on a very clear roadmap for our community that we believe will build a healthier and more sustainable business.

Building the EA We Believe In

The decisions we’re making in our priorities, how we work, and with our portfolio reflect our belief in EA’s future. Some open exciting new possibilities. Others are difficult, especially for the people and teams across the company who are directly affected. In those cases, we will support impacted employees in exploring other opportunities within EA, and we’re committed to treating impacted colleagues with care and respect.

We’re sure there will be questions about what these changes mean for individual teams and for EA more broadly. You can speak directly with your leaders to hear more on that, and we’ll make sure to spend time discussing our direction and the work ahead at our next Global Town Hall in November.

The past several months have strengthened our belief in what EA can become. We have extraordinary people, franchises that matter to millions of players, and opportunities to build experiences we’ve only begun to imagine.

Our responsibility is to make the choices, provide the clarity, and create the conditions for our teams to do their best work. We also want to give every game we choose to build its best chance to succeed for our players and fans around the world.

We look forward to building more great games and experiences together.

Thanks,

Cam & David

PLEASE do some quick research before getting a game on Steam, to verify it's the original developer and not an AI clone. It's getting ridiculous out there.

3.6k Upvotes

I honestly believe most devs would rather you play their own game for free (and MAYBE decide to buy it later if you like it?) than you playing a cloned slop of it and completely missing the original one.

Just do some research for like 5 minutes, it's worth it.

Steam NextFest is not perfect, but it was a very good place to get visibility and try a whole lot of game demos, but now it's getting ruined at breakneck speed.
