28 years ago, October 20, 1998, Metal Gear Solid by Hideo Kojima launched in North America on the original PlayStation! It's Japan release was September 3rd.

A Hind D? Colonel, what’s a Russian gunship doing here?
18
u/ElegantEchoes 8h ago
I find it amusing that in the Metal Gear universe, Naked Snake was the first person to discover the Mi-24 Hind in the west and report it. He even names it the "Hind", already being familiar with NATO aircraft naming conventions lol. An A model that you can find and it allows a hidden optional Radio conversation.
It's interesting to me that despite how threatening the Shagohad is, Volgin anachronistically developing the Hind many years earlier than our real world would actually be his design bureau's best achievement.

I have no idea. But it looks like our little diversion got their attention. Now's your best chance to slip in unnoticed.

This is my text alert noise and the codec chime is my call ringtone. I’m 43, this game left an impression.

“Huh!!?? Must have been the wind.”
Ya never mind where all your comrades went.2
u/Faithless195 2h ago
"Whose footprints are these?"
Follows footprints around a metre by metre pole for eternity
3
u/1ceByte28 6h ago
My text message is Codec call and I get a lot of people still turning there heads at me when it goes off
1
u/peterson148 13m ago
Did that and it only lasted 2 days. After getting a message at 1 am scaring the shit out of me, I had to change it
8
u/ElegantEchoes 8h ago
I hear so many people using that sound on their phones that have no idea where it's from lol
10
u/michelobX10 7h ago
I hear it on YouTube videos all the time. It has basically become the universal alert sound and most of them probably have no clue it came from a video game. lol

Here's to you, MGS.
Coincidentally, I just got MGS Delta: Snake Eater for my birthday and have been experiencing MGS3 for the first time in years. Enjoying it like crazy.

Best ladder climb ever. One of my all time favorites.

Yes, Solid Snake. It's a covert research base involving nuclear material and black projects.

"Snake! We don't need an exterminator! We need someone to stop that God damn nuke!"

I'm playing it for the first time right now! Having a great time but man fuck some of these bosses. Talking about you sniper wolf

u/notsureifJasonBourne 8h ago
The tank dude was a struggle for me. Tossing those grenades with any kind of accuracy was tough lol

If you scavenged all the claymores earlier, the fight is pretty easy- just claymore him to hell.

Phyco Mantis reading my memory and stating "You like Castlevania don't you?" made me jump off the couch in shock

Use that pentazemin
7
3
u/TimmyChips 7h ago
I downed so much of the pentazemin trying to fight Sniper Wolf. You can use the Nikita missile launcher and camp in the corner too if needed.
2
u/1ceByte28 6h ago
It almost fucking hurt to watch the TV when her shots hit Snake, the bright red flash and Hayters loud grunt of pain was visceral
1
3
u/DarkMatterM4 5h ago
Don't use the analog stick when aiming with the PSG1. Using the analog stick doesn't stop your hands from shaking. If you use the dpad, your tremors stop temporarily.
2
u/Kerlyle 5h ago
Hm didn't know you could use analogue stick, in playing on ps3. Aiming isn't really where I'm stuck, it's how damn slow snake is to re-aim after he's shot cause it flings the camera a football field away
3
u/DarkMatterM4 5h ago
Tap R1 to unequip the PSG1, push up on the dpad to have Snake face the 12 o'clock position and tap R1 again to requip the PSG1. It's much faster than SLOWLY getting your aim back on target.
3
u/Finchypoo 4h ago
I thought Sniper Wolf was better dispatched with those little slow missiles you could steer. You sit behind cover and fly one across the map and blow her up. I'm pretty sure that's how I did it.
2
u/InfectiousVapor 2h ago
There must be a 2nd fight against her that I haven’t come across yet because I just finished her fight for the 1st time and it doesn’t let you use the Nikita.
1
u/johnperkins21 4h ago
I have a hard time getting back into it. The controls are just so outside of what feels comfortable.
1
u/InfectiousVapor 2h ago
Same! Bought my first PS2 a few weeks ago. MGS, MGS4, and Portable Ops are the only MG games I’ve never played.
26
u/1I1III1I1I111I1I1 8h ago
i feel like this game had no hype in the US when it first dropped (I was 14).
And then shortly after release, the word of mouth tsunami hit.
25
u/Wagglyfawn 8h ago
I played the shit out of it from a demo disc I got in a GamePro magazine and it seemed like everyone was talking about it. I begged for that game for Christmas that year and got it. I still a playthrough every couple years.
3
2
u/Atreyisx 1h ago
my friend group and i played that demo every day after school for like a solid 2 months before one of use could save up to buy the game. Playing a game where the goal was to AVOID attacking every enemy you see instantly was mind blowing at the time.
13
u/Elnumberone 8h ago
I recall a magazine preview of this game, and then the review issue came out, I think it was the first game this magazine ever gave a 10/10, so I had to get it. I saved money from my weekend job to buy the PlayStation and this game. I was so excited about it, I remember showing it off to my then-70-year-old grandma.
2
u/sethferguson 7h ago
I think I rented it without knowing anything about it and loved the shit out of it, I was 11-12 at the time and I don't remember any of my friends playing it until years later
2

u/tequilasauer 3h ago
No way, this thing had MASSIVE hype. I remember EGM talking about the first demo videos going around of Grey Fox in camo and Snake shooting at him. All the articles on that specific video were talking about how we'd never seen a game really pull off that Predator camo, and how cinematic it looked. And all the screenshots, we had never seen anything like that.
And then yeah, it lands and it delivers on everything. It's definitely top 5 Playstation games for me.
1
u/Protocol3_ 7h ago
Dunno about the usa but ik it was in all the magazines I was so hyped I got a Japanese copy to play.
Had to visit an Internet cafe many times. Codec for meryl and the keys.
I also beat psycho mantis without the port switch. It took like 20 mins though. Prob my fave gaming achievement.
1
u/larsvondank 5h ago
I remember there being pretty big hype. The demo disc rly made a big splash! People played those levels for a long time, myself included.
1
u/johnperkins21 4h ago
I was 23 and this is not how I remember it. Maybe it wasn't as big in high schools as it was in military barracks and other dorm locations where young adults gather? It had plenty of hype. It was the cover story on the September 1998 issue of EGM. It was also covered on Gamepro and NextGen. It had multiple cover stories that year.
1
u/doorknobsquad 1h ago
I remember playing a demo that ended with the Ocelot fight. I loved it and played it religiously until I was able to get the full game. Fantastic game!!!
1
u/TakeAMichigander 8h ago
I was around 10 years old at the time I don't remember any hype but after it released the word of mouth was insane, we were all going over to a friend's house to watch and then renting it from Blockbuster

MGS1 the best of all stories in the series
1
u/SKOOBY-4 27m ago
I recently played through MGS1-4; my favorite story was MGS4, but MGS1 was a very close second.
7
u/IllustriousBit6634 5h ago
I played the demo for this daily for weeks prior to the release, I’d never been so hyped for a game. The gameplay up to the DARPA chief I still know it so vividly, which is where the demo ended.
I remember when I progressed past that scene for the first I was so giddy lol

u/F_A_F 4h ago
Related; the original PS box for the MGS game also included an early demo for Silent Hill. This included different assets for the dwarves with claws; they were babies with kitchen knives in the demo version.
Just found my copy last week and hoping to Vinted it for someone else to appreciate.
1
u/InfectiousVapor 2h ago
The Grey Children is what knife wielding creatures were called. They’re in the North American version of the game, whereas the Japanese and European versions have Mumblers, the clawed creatures.
4
u/TheBurbs666 8h ago
One of my all time if not favorite games. I still remember having the ps underground disc with this demo on it.
I played so much the disc stopped working. My god what a masterpiece
5
u/Stan_the_man1988 6h ago
I was 10 years old and a non English speaker when this came out. This was before you were able to change languages and subtitles. I had no idea what to do and it took me a year to finish the game. I bought it again 20 something years later digitally and finished it in 8hrs, with cutscenes.
2
u/pmyourpmsforgod 6h ago
What’s your native language?
3
u/Stan_the_man1988 6h ago
Flemish (Belgium). It's basically the same as Dutch but with some different pronunciations.
0
u/flying_fox86 5h ago
Don't confuse people. We speak Dutch, that's what the language is called. American English also sounds different from UK English. We still call it English, not American.

I still remember the original Metal Gear on NES
8
u/ThePhyry22 PC 8h ago
"original" "on NES"
The original released on the MSX2 and the NES version was altered and was made without Kojima. The NES version in general was made my a different team who were given the source code without the original teams consent.
7
u/dragonfirefighter 8h ago
I think he is still correct in calling it the original Metal Gear game, since it is still the original Metal Gear game, even if it is technically a port with changes.
And also, unless if you lived in Japan, that was the original Metal Gear game.

u/WestBreak21 8h ago
Still holds up as one of the best games on the PS1. The stealth, the boss fights, and that story were way ahead of their time. Can't believe it's been 28 years!
2
2
u/jrbcnchezbrg 7h ago
And then Kojima went to 11 on deciding his characters all needed to be named ridiculous obvious things
2
u/tinydick89 5h ago
I'd say his names were already fairly on the nose in this game. Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf, Big Boss, Revolver Ocelot...
2
u/Sage2050 6h ago
It's hard to explain how monumental and groundbreaking this game was in 98. It felt like we were truly in the future of gaming.

Played the demo endlessly. Couldn’t believe the rest of the game when I finally bought it.
1
u/TheRoscoeVine 8h ago
That’s probably the coolest game I never finished, and I’ve left behind a real trail of partially played games.
1
u/Gone_For_Lunch 7h ago
Really? It’s a pretty short game.
1
u/TheRoscoeVine 7h ago
My disc 2 was bad, or my PlayStation couldn’t read it. The PlayStation was used and the game probably was, too. It was ‘99.

u/HP_594 8h ago
Played this game for the first time and also completed it this year, after attempting it twice and not understanding how to play it.
That torture sequence will forever remain a nightmare for me and my right thumb.

u/hellschatt 1h ago
You truly share the unique experience of being tortured together with snake.
Genius Kojima.

I still remember working at SoftWare ECT as a teenager back then and we could "check out" games to play them and inform customers better and "boost" sales and subscriptions. I remember checking out MGS and Pokemon Blue because I was like "WTF is this weird Japanese crap everyone keeps talking about?"
Needless to say, I think I stayed up till 5am with the volume at lowest playing MGS so my parents would hear me downstairs and immediately bought the copy when I went back to work.
Game utterly blew my mind and one of the few games that genuinely made me cry and shock/surprise me especially that "reveal" I also think I actually screamed when Physco Mantis suddenly said during his mind reading cinematic "You like Castlevania don't you?" and then asked me to put my controller on the floor while my dad was watching and his eyes went bug eyed seeing my controller skipping across the ground.
Oh, then I had to buy a Gameboy so I could stop taking my coworkers cause I was also obsessed with finding those fucking little poke critters so I could level up my Squirtle so I could kick Garys ass again, while using my flashlight in my bed at night
1
u/Rhythmest 8h ago
Love this game sooooo much. Honestly if there was a remaster I would buy it immediately
1
u/theta0123 8h ago
As a 7 year old kid i had no idea what i was doing but i loved it. It was when MGS3 came out that my mind properly matured and did i realized how truly innovative MGS1 was.
I replay MGS1 once a year. It always grips me. It always amazes me. The music plays on my forklift at work. Some things did not date well but the game truly set a new benchmark.

Man, what a game for the time. Every MGS game early on pushed the boundaries of what was possible for the system, I’d say easily through MGS4. What a phenomenal game the original remains to this day.
1
u/RealGBK 7h ago
I never really liked metal gear on NES as a kid, but for some reason, I really wanted this game and I got it for Christmas as a 17 year old.
My mind was absolutely blown. I was STUNNED at how real everything looked (for the time) and the details they put into it.
It is absolutely one of the greatest gaming experiences I have ever had.

My mom’s boyfriend got me this game on a burned disk when I was in 4th grade. There was a certain point in the game where it would just stop working, so I never got very far. Probably in the first 2-4 hours of the game. Still burned into my memory though, that shit was iconic.

One of the gaming monuments of late 1998 (with Ocarina of Time on the N64 and Half-Life on PC).
I played through the MC version on my Steam Deck recently, it still is a great game.

I never played the original. I got the first for ps3 (was it MG4?) and at the end they have that part where it flashes back to the original??? I was like wtf? How do I play this! I hated it! Haha.
That and “war has changed” every 3 lines.
1
u/DarkMatterM4 5h ago
This game created so many gun fanatics in the late 90s and early 2000s. HK still makes the MK23 because people never stopped buying them. I'm sure Metal Gear Solid is partially responsible for that.
1
u/I_Love_Bears0810 5h ago
Fucking love this game! 1-4, adore them all.
Have a tattoo of snake. Replayed the remastered ones and it was just wonderful.
Had a terrible moment during the psycho mantis fight...before I entered the room I had low health 🤦🏻♂️ it saved me with low health. It took about an hour to beat him due to having no bastarding rations fs lol

What surprised me the most about MGS, even way back in the day, is how much I engaged with it. On the surface, it's not really my type of game. But I got so into the mechanics and the story that I just sort of zoned out when playing it. I remember replaying the 2nd Raven fight over and over again because of how cool it was.

I can see why this series is a classic. So much charme and edginess. I loved it.

Unless you were there, it's hard to understand what a revolutionary game this was. At the time I felt like it was the perfect merger of cinematic film and Game playing experience. The opening intro just drew you in. I was 21 when I played this at my uncle's house on his PlayStation. I spent a couple days there just to beat it...poor college student and all.

One of my favorite franchises of all time. Admittedly MGS1 hasn't aged well gameplay-wise, but everything else about it is so top notch that it's still an incredible game, even if I prefer 2 and 3.

Best metal gear in my opinion. I played phantom pain and while it is graphically superior, I dislike the open world setting.

u/CygnusThib 7h ago edited 7h ago
Hideo Kojima's name use to be a selling point, but as we saw with Death Stranding 2 people don't care so much anymore. Even Sony axed him because of how bad of a flop it was with the money spent on it.
Metal Gear was Kojima's rise to fame, but without it he clearly can't make anything halfway decent.
Edit: Downvotes don't suddenly make Death Stranding a resounding success Reddit. As shown with Bioware, a name isn't enough anymore.

Yep. Definitely karma farming. Myself and many others called you out on your previous post that you’ve now deleted, to which you replied that’s not what you’re doing. You definitely are.

I deleted the original post due to have the wrong information. I am not karma farming.

Acknowledging a game’s release anniversary to create discussion seems like the exact type of thing everyone does on Reddit. If you’re at a point where you’re actively worrying about other peoples imaginary internet points, it might be time to put the phone or keyboard down for a few days.

Truly a revolutionary game that influenced so many after it and one of the greatest video games ever made. I replayed it last year and it still holds up I think.
