IIRC one of the reasons videos like this are interesting is that lions are extremely social animals and tigers just aren't.
394
u/anotherpangolin 2h ago
Yes, in this video we can see that (1) lions live in packs whereas tigers spend most of their lives alone and (2) neither of them get the concept of the other one's thinking differently, all they see is another cat with a weird behaviour.
99
u/Topinio 1h ago
Pretty much like humans, then … except these 2 still snuggle and chill.
66
u/Important-Ad1871 1h ago
Yeah you can tell the tiger generally sucks it up and deals with it
Someone else said these two were rescued from an irresponsible owner so I imagine their behavior is pretty altered.

it's as if those zookeepers knew a thing or two about how tigers behave in captivity when they are either alone or in the company of other big felines.

Its odd to think that these animals with wildly different social behaviours can actually interbreed. I wonder how tiger lion hybrids behave.

Are these the ones that were found with, like, I think a bear too? They were being neglected and abused as three cubs and formed a tight trauma bond?
Edit: Here is a short news clip about the trio I'm referring to. They were rescued from a drug dealer in Atlanta and lived together at Noah's Ark sanctuary
103
u/PeenFifteen 2h ago
Yeah this isn’t a normal interaction. Both the cats and the bear are like bros. They were all owned by a drug dealer and horribly neglected. The bear had a harness that he grew into, and had to have surgery to get it taken off.

No, it was a male lion named Leo, and he did have a mane, albeit not a very thick one

PSA: “trauma bonding” (also called “traumatic bonding”) is when the victim develops a strong emotional bond towards their abuser, not co-victims. This is related to but differs from “Stockholm syndrome”, as trauma bonding is a one-directional bond, whereas Stockholm syndrome is a reciprocal connection.

Interestingly, at one point lions and tigers actually had overlapping ranges. Their ranges at one point or another have extended to parts of Anatolia, the Caucasus, Iran and parts of India. Today there is actually still a reservation of Indian lions in Gujarat, India, a country more associated with the tiger.

2
2
u/AlphaBetaGammaDonut 1h ago
My weird bit of knowledge about Ligers is that their genetics makes them fecking huge. Male lions have a growth-expanding gene, and female lions have a growth limiting gene to keep that in check. Tigers have neither, so when you have a lion father and a tiger mother, you end up with a cat that weighs half a ton.

u/TriiiKill 2h ago
I had no idea how close in size they were. I swore tigers were bigger by a lot.
22
u/DutertesNemesis 1h ago
Bunch of different species of tigers. Tigers generally are 1.4-2.8m in head-body length (doesn’t count tail), and about 0.8-1.1m tall at the shoulders. Siberian and Bengal tigers are the biggest, with males weighing around 200-260kg. For Sumatran Tigers, which are on the smaller side, males typically weigh 100-140kg. So lots of diversity in tiger size.
Lions (the ones that live in Africa, not mountain lions) typically are about 1.6-1.8m in head-body length, and about 110-140kg. So the average lion is a bit bigger than the smallest tigers, but the biggest tigers are the biggest cats on the planet.

Usually they are. They’re much better hunters and they like running solo so they usually eat a lot more then lions do, thus they’re often larger
There are some difference between species, but that’s a general rule

I live in Georgia, and I can confirm, unfortunately, none of the BLT remain. Also the park changed hands and went downhill fast.
9
u/internet-arbiter 1h ago
Got me curious but it looks like if anything, the parks bounced back (their former legal opponents even expressed admiration and support of the current owner). And the BLT trio - whom passed longer before owner change - lived to 23, 15, and 17 respectively - which is longer than a wild lifespan.
