Hey everyone, Roboto, your friendly neighborhood (actually human) mod here with some subreddit updates!
First, the least fun part in all of this –
We need to talk about our subreddit culture.
Our community is toxic. There’s no other way I can think of to describe what has been happening. Even worse, this reputation extends beyond our immediate community into other subreddits and even other platforms. People are afraid of us.
I’m going to take some ownership of this. The harsh reputation of this subreddit far precedes me as a mod, but in recent years, our hard-fought progress on this front has been lost. That’s on me. The lack of consistent moderation here has let rules 1 and 2 go under-enforced for too long, allowing hostility to take root as the norm.
The adversarial and unwelcoming environment we’ve collectively created functions in direct opposition to our subreddit goals, and frankly what I believe to be the goals of many users here. If we care about betta fish first and foremost, this culture needs to change.
Our expectations and what better looks like
If you have good advice to give, give it in a more constructive, not destructive, way. Shaming people makes them shut down and disengage so they don't even process the rest of the good advice you have to offer. Don't highlight all the things they're doing wrong, focus on what they can do better and why it's helpful in a way that encourages them to do it.
So instead of saying "your empty tank is sad," share the opportunities for improvement, like "betta fish benefit from tanks with lots of plants and hiding/resting places so your fish would be happier if you filled the tank in a bit more."
We can’t ignore that people will think they're doing research by going and talking to presumed experts or reading product information. Store employees are presumed to be properly trained and products marketed at bettas are assumed to know what they’re talking about, too. It doesn't help that there's very little consensus online about what adequate care even is. For example, Petco's online betta care guide, updated in 2025, says bettas need a minimum of 1gal. Furthermore, many quality care guides are on niche websites that may not seem credible to a new hobbyist compared to a well-known chain.
With that in mind, we all need to stop:
Going forward, comments exhibiting the behaviors listed above will be removed as violations of rules 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exact nature of the comment.
I know members of our subreddit are burned out from the bad husbandry they see constantly. It's exhausting and I won't pretend it's not. But if we bully one owner into submission, cool, that's maybe one fish saved. How many owners did we scare away from asking for help in the process? We're going to have a far broader impact building people up in this hobby, not tearing them down.
That said, this is a two-way street of support. I'm cognizant of the fact that people offer their time and mental energy supporting our subreddit, and they don't deserve to have that wasted by people who don't care to use it. If someone is given better information and advice and refuses to take it, that violates rule 3. We often get reports about all the fighting around ignored advice, but not the ignoring itself. In the future, please report these instances to us. For this to be successful, we also need users to avoid escalating disagreements when OP refuses valid and respectful advice.
Now for the fun stuff –
New mods
We recently brought on 12 additional mods to enable us to better support this community’s needs. Please help us welcome:
They’re going to introduce themselves in the comments below and I’ll try and link their names in this post as they do.
It takes a bit to get 12 brand new people to operate as a consistent group, so we may occasionally over-moderate while everyone learns.
I realize that our increased emphasis on subreddit culture may make removals feel arbitrary at times. In the spirit of transparency, I have given the new moderators the guidance that if a senior mod isn’t free to give timely feedback, when in doubt, they should remove posts/comments that are believed to violate rules. Senior mods will still review the content in question, and removals may be reversed, if necessary.
If you disagree with a moderator’s decision, please send us a modmail and one of the senior mods will review your concern and get back to you.
Updated tools and resources
Small updates at this time, but more exciting things in the pipeline!
Roboto is a super sentimental actual human
I realize this post started on a challenging topic, but despite the highs and lows our community faces, I remain grateful that I get to do this with you all.
I’ve been a mod of this community for nearly 7 years, and a member for far longer. In that time, so many things, from our mod team, to Reddit as a platform, to our own lives and the world around us, have become fundamentally different.
There are very few constants I can point to after all this time, but the enduring engagement and passion of this community is one of them and I’m honored to steward this space.
At the core of it all, this hobby, and this subreddit, are comprised of people who really want the best for one another and that makes this work so much easier.
Thank you all, sincerely, for riding with us as we figure this thing out. I’m excited for the next chapter of our subreddit, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the next 7 years.
- Roboto
Edit: If anyone has additional feedback about our community culture, please share it in a comment below, or feel free to send us a modmail.

I asked my local pet store if they'd let me have Bubbles for free.
Hed been in the tank a few months that I know of and nobody wanted him. He appears to have early stage tumours ( which I believe is Quite common )
I've never had a Betta fish before, but he's so happy and active I felt he deserved a good home.
Can anyone give me any tips for his uncertain future please? 🙏

this is blueberry pie, she started growing a tumor about a month ago and it’s slowing grown. she’s totally fine active swims totally normal and is a very active eater and hungry. but the tumors just so huge? should i look into euthanasia or something like that what do we think. it’s marked nsfw but it’s a video of blueberry and there tumor that’s a little bigger than the size of it her head.

This is a 5gal tank I’m keeping outside as a scud culture and with a female betta (haven’t named her yet). I used the Father Fish method (no cycling, fish in immediately, no filter, deep soil and sand substrate with natural debris sourced from a local ecosystem). The only tech I am using is a very low-flow powerhead to circulate the water.
I’ve since redone another tank I had with the Father Fish method and it really works. It’s basically a modified Walstad method. I will never cycle a tank again tbh.
With this 5gal, I modified it by not using any submerged plants and instead heavy-feeding floaters. I did this because I wanted the water column to be as shaded as possible to help with temp regulation and to keep the betta from jumping. Lots of scuds in the leaf litter and she is super happy. Her stress stripes went away immediately after I moved her into this tank from another setup (she chronically had them for like a month since I got her) and she is a lot less shy.
She spends her time hunting in the leaves and in the floating roots. Water parameters have been pristine, especially due to the water hyacinth! I highly recommend using it if you have a bright light source, as my ponds outside have had way more stable parameters since I added a bunch to them too. This tank has no artificial light and gets about 2 hrs of morning sun and then bright indirect sunlight the rest of the day. I live in the tropics and it’s about 75-85F year round.

Agatha is having some buoyancy issues again so she thought it would be a great time to wedge herself between these rocks as tight as possible to give me a heart attack.

This is my first Betta in over 5 years. I work at a pet store and got this big betta labeled Show Koi King Betta in. I feel bad for all them, but they get bought pretty quick and only have to stay in those tiny cups for a bit, but I felt worse because this guy is like two bettas and had to live in the same size cup. So I bought him, a 20gal Tetra kit, API test strips and their ammonia liquid test, Seachem Sure Start, Clarity, Flourish, and Stress guard, fluval bug bites flakes and pellets, mopani wood log, catappa leaves, dragon stone, some fancy shrimp and plant substrate, some gravel, and an anubias plant.
I've had him for a bit over a month now. All the parameters are okay, around 7.5ph, 30ppm gh, 60ppm kh, 0 n02 or n03, but the ammonia is a little high, about 0.25-0.50ppm. I assume the levels are a little weird because the tank is still cycling, unfortunately I had to add him in before it finished. About a week after I got him this whiteish translucent stuff showed up, but I looked it up and it's supposed to be harmless I guess. Today I did a water change and added in dragon stone and did a water test. The ammonia is lower but still kinda high. After I added in the stone I noticed I kicked up a lot of the translucent film, and weird oily looking stuff coming from the heater or the suction cup, so I added pristine and clarity to help.
Like I said I haven't had a fish in a while and wanted to post here to get any feedback or advice. I'll comment on this post to add additional photos and videos.
Edit: His name is Plakeemao
Edit2: heater turned off and stuff stopped coming from it, I guess maybe thats what water heating up looks like underwater?

Hi guys!! Wondering what everybody thinks of my setup for my new addition gila! (King gizz reference if anyone has caught that). He is settling in amazingly to his new kingdom and has been loving swimming in the tall plants
I have been planning this tank for over a year now, and finally took the step into setting it up properly!

5 gallon tank, with some neocardinia shrimp and a few loaches
All plants are real except the bamboo, and of course, the goofy cherry blossom tree.
***edit! I took the loach fish back because I was advised the tank was too small.

I have had tropical fish tanks on and off my whole life. However I’ve never had a betta! I feel like I can sense he isn’t that happy and I am determined to get him there!
I’ll start by saying I know I shouldn’t have.. but I got this fellow at petsmart. He was looking so sorry and the fish next to him was decaying and slimy. (Yes I did let the manager know and asked them to change the water out).
So I took him home.
I promptly bought a 3 gallon tank and bought 2 gallons of betta water (I know I was probably scammed lol) and filled the rest up with regular tap.
I let it run a full 24 hours before taking him out of his cup and into there.
There are 3 total live plants and 1 fake one.. and the betta leaf bed? Again another scam probably)
And a heater that is 15w and at 78 degrees.
I just feel like he isn’t happy! Now it’s only been a few days.. maybe going on a week. But from what I know of this kind of fish is their fins don’t look like this when they are happy.
At this time 3 gallon is the biggest I can go!
Does he just need more time to adjust?
Does he need less light?
More plants?
I’m investing in getting this guy happy!

I just went to feed my little guy here and noticed he has a huge bulge (bubble?) In his chest. Ammonia nitrate nitrites all 0. Tank temp is 80.
He's always been kind of a sickly fish I suppose. He was a cup fish. Pectoral fins have always been uneven, his ventral fins have always been curled up. Since I've gotten him and given him a proper life his tail fins have only gotten longer. His fins have never had a defined shape, they were just like long drapes.
As you can clearly see, he has recently nipped off so much of his fins. I feel so terrible for him. He has trouble swimming and he has the entire time I've had him. He just sinks and he has to work so hard to swim around. He eats normal and exhibits good behaviors. He perks up when he sees me and swims towards the glass.
Just wondering what this could be? I don't think it's constipation, I feed my fish about 6 days of the week and sometimes skip a morning or evening meal on those days (not large portions either).
Has he just been doomed to a life of tragedy? What can I do for him? Also don't mind the dirty glass it's cleaning day tomorrow 😭.

Hello everyone!
I recently set up a ~40L (~12gallons) aquarium, ~25 degrees C (30x60x30cm) with live plants and my plan was to keep a Betta fish inside. The tank has almost finished cycling, it eats around 2ppms of ammonia/nitrites in about a day and a half so i haven’t added any animals.
My original idea was to first add around 10 shrimp with 1 Nerite snail, followed by 4-5 Kuhli Loaches and then the last member added would be one male Betta (probably short finned).
Now I’m not sure its a good idea anymore.
What do you think?
Thanks for everyones input!

Not sure what is on her side, but lately it's been dragging her to the bottom of the tank. But not too long ago she figured out how to use the roots and air pipes to prop herself up near the surface. She seems in good health otherwise and still has the zoomies ocassionally

I have some fake and some real plants, some wood and a heater and sponge filter(other filter came with the tank and has been cycling it for 3 weeks so I got the sponge filter just in there with it temporarily). I'm so excited to put a betta fish, some snails and shrimp in here soon

I finally have my betta and nerite snail in my 5 gal tank and it has been continuously cycled for over a week (since starting my fishless cycle for almost 2 months now) I just wanted to show off my male Nemo Koi Betta and Nerite snail George.
Thank you everyone who helped me with my questions about changing my internal filter with HOB filter and for stabilizing my ph with crushed coral!
I still have some of my filter floss and ceramic rings from my old filter near the water flow just until my tanks filter becomes more established.
I just need help naming my new betta. He is curious and really cool. Thanks again for the great advice from this forum🐟🐌💜
