This is why they don't offer life insurance to car detailers.

I'm honestly dying to know where that tire came from.

Highway above looks like... wonder how the drivers fixed that situation. Going 65 mph then suddenly become a tricycle can't be fun.
82
u/NuklearFerret 2d ago
If it's from a truck, it may have been from a dual-tire setup (forgot the technical term). If so, there's a chance they barely even noticed it.
47
u/Alklazaris 2d ago
Not from a dually or a semi. They tend to forgo the fancy pattern cast wheels. Looks like a standard truck wheel. Those bigger trucks tend to have steel rims.

u/Brittany5150 2d ago
Your mom has a steel rim...

Happened to my wife's aunt not too long ago. She was lucky the car stayed mostly balanced until she could pull to the side and stop. No idea what happened, because it didn't come off, it broke off.
2
u/Alklazaris 1d ago
I had a wheel almost come off once in the front. Damn tech never tightened the lugs after replace the battery. Such a shitty location for a battery, but dude... its fricken lug nuts. How do you fail at that? Bent my front axle and damn near rocked the car right off the road. It had one nut left.
3
u/MrWeaD 1d ago
My mom was driving home down the highway a handful of years ago. A Yukon with big tacky rims lost a tire on the opposite side of the highway, and it crushed the front driver side of my mom's suburban. She probably was a few seconds, or a few degrees from taking an unexpected tire in the face on a pitch black highway. She didn't even know what happened until after the fact, and cops came out. Scary shit.....

u/clivehorse 1d ago
I had this happen to me at 30mph, it was a back wheel that came off, so it tipped the weight off the front and made the steering and braking really light - it felt like I had I lost them totally but in hindsight I might have still had some control.

u/blueExcess 1d ago
Possibly. Happens more than you’d think. There’s a lotta momentum behind that tire. Definitely a significant hospital trip.

ive been on hundreds (literally) of dealership lots, because of my job, and when i show up i go through the entire dealership looking for inventory or keys. Never once have i seen a free range tire doing some shit like this! I've heard someone shoot a car with a handgun while i was outside working in the lot, got to see the mechanics dig the bullets out of the back seats and trunk. Seen a very old couple steal floor mats from a dealership, seen multiple people loose their shit because the deal fell through, had a detail crew guy threaten to stab me because i asked him to stop leaning on my personal car, never, not ONCE seen a free range tire.

u/gurumoves 1d ago
There is another cam that captures part of the origins of the rogue tire, but I’m afraid parts of it still remain a mystery to this day

u/VFequalsVeryFcked 1d ago
It looks like the blue car got hit by a tire, and then we see the second one nearly take out the nice car
1
u/topofthemawnin 1d ago
That blue car got blasted. Watch it again.. it hits it and damages the whole back, top.

In the Steven Spielberg movie "E.T.," why is the alien brown? No reason. In "Love Story," why do the two characters fall madly in love with each other? No reason. In Oliver Stone's "JFK," why is the President suddenly assassinated by some stranger? No reason. In the excellent "Chain Saw Massacre" by Tobe Hooper, why don't we ever see the characters go to the bathroom or wash their hands like people do in real life? Absolutely no reason. Worse, in "The Pianist" by Polanski, how come this guy has to hide and live like a bum when he plays the piano so well? Once again the answer is, no reason. I could go on for hours with more examples. The list is endless. You probably never gave it a thought, but all great films, without exception, contain an important element of no reason. And you know why? Because life itself is filled with no reason. Why can't we see the air all around us? No reason. Why are we always thinking? No reason. Why do some people love sausages and other people hate sausages? No fuckin' reason.

I swear to god, Reddit is just an extremely overengineered propaganda website to get us all to be deathly terrified of tires.

u/Pure_Spyder 14h ago
Genuinely just last week bout 5 miles out of town on the interstate semi was driving west and tire wiggled its way right off the middle axel bounced through the inner median and hit a car driving east took part of the roof off, killed the driver and 3yo daughter, mom and 11mo survived and I think another car behind them suffered some injuries as well. Tires are terrifying

u/Frosty-Dress-7375 5h ago
Or, a valid news site warning us of the inherent dangers of letting our tires run wild!
You decide.

A tire hit her in the face!
What was she doing putting her face near tires?
No no no no no. This tire hunted Mary down. This tire murdered Mary.4

Easily. Nobody thinks about how much force those things have moving at speed, and they lose very little momentum when they bounce.
9
u/iamsheph 2d ago
What do you mean by “nobody thinks about…”? Are people openly stating a moving tire doesn’t have much force?
8
u/Mediocre_Penalty6361 2d ago
nobody thinking about something and nobody stating something are not the same thing. he’s correct in saying nobody thinks about it. he never said anybody openly states the opposite.

One of the first cases I got as an auto damage adjuster was loose tire v car.
The front end of the Mercedes was crumpled in so badly the radiator fans were pushed into the engine.
It was unbelievable how much force that thing had. It just obliterated the Mercedes. Sure, the car was going 55-70 miles an hour, and the tire bounced over a center divide and was traveling opposite direction but it was incredible how much power that thing had. Husband and wife were driving. That thing was 3 inches higher and one of them would've seen their spouse turned into paste.
Inches from death. It was shocking.

For the McLaren gods watch over them daily.

u/Alternative_Swan_497 2d ago
No shit. My immediate reaction is that it would have been a very interesting conversation with the detailing shop's insurance if that tire had been a couple feet the other direction.

My uncle had the same kind of thing. He was working on a construction site and a crane whizzed passed his head, missed him by a foot.
That was it. He was done working construction.

Im pretty sure all workplaces have to have some form of workers comp insurance incase anyone gets hurt on the job or dies. I know where im currently working their payout if one of us dies at work while clocked in is like 75k to the spouse or next of kin. The factory job I worked covered death at 150k.

u/OSTBear 1d ago
I'm going to reveal something to you. It's a deep truth and you and others won't like it, and that's fine. I get why, but it's the truth all the same;
There is nothing original on the internet. Nothing. Hell, this video is from 4 years ago and I'll bet all the money in my pocket, against all the money in yours, that it's been posted here at least twice before. And even if it was, even it was truly the first time... There's a dozen others just like it. No better, no worse, just truly more of the same.
And this isn't just true of memes or clips on the Internet. Even your most beloved shows are pale reflections of what came before it. Sons of Anarchy is King Lear with motorcycles, Breaking Bad is Macbeth with Crystalmeth (😉), and House of Cards is Richard III.
So what should we do? Never enjoy anything because it's all technically come before? Sounds like a hollow life, to me.
... Sorry. Having a day.
I found it funny so I said it. Meh.

This happened to me. When your wheel flies off that bad boy can cover some ground.
I was driving a grand am and the studs just started failing out of nowhere or something. The wheel got loose so we tightened it didn’t think anything of it and kept on driving. 20 minutes the later the shake comes back twice as violent the studs snap immediately and the wheel flies off on its magic carpet ride over an entire 6 lane intersection somehow missing all the cars and flying right through a antique store window missing a little girl by mere inches.
Everyone was super shook up but were just really grateful she and everyone else was ok. There’s a reason Pontiac went out of business I learned.
