Good acting is supposed to immerse one in the character and not the actor portraying them. If you’re struggling to enjoy his movies now, you probably never really liked him as an actor in the first place.
This is sometimes true, but not always. For example, I used to absolutely love Ryan Adams music. His songwriting will always be iconic, but after the sexual abuse allegations came out, and the way he responded to them, I feel different when I try to listen to those same songs, and end up turning them off. I WANT to like them, but all that makes it hard. I can easily see how someone could feel the same way about Will Smith and his movies. It doesn’t change the level of actor he was or the quality of the film itself, it just feels different when he’s the protagonist and you WANT to root for him, but just can’t.
I feel like you understand me, I think Will Smith is a good actor and does a good job, it's just hard to look at him the same after everything and kinda ruins movies I once loved
It’s hard to root for the protagonist in a film if you know the person playing them isn’t a good person. On the flip side, it’s easy to shelve some of the emotions we feel about actual monsters when someone we like play them in a movie or television. An example of this is Evan Peters playing Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer was pure evil, but I ended up feeling a little empathy for him while watching that movie, probably because I like Evan Peters as an actor. It doesn’t mean I have actual empathy for Dahmer any more than it means I think Will Smith is a bad actor.
