He was scoring adulation from everyone around him as more or less a child, and she was the one person who wouldn't give it to him.
So he craved her. Well turns out chasing people that aren't interested or are keeping you on a string has consequences. He's now stuck into a relationship that from the outside seems to be eating him alive.
Not my life, but I've been in a similar spot. Far better he cuts and runs even if he has to give up nearly all his cash.
